Is Joan Beringer the Next BIG Thing for the Timberwolves

what’s up NBA fans the NBA draft has come and gone and the Minnesota Timberwolves just made a major move selecting 18-year-old French center Joan Behringer with the 17th overall pick today we’re breaking down what this pick means for the Timberwolves behingers’s potential and what this might say about the team’s future but before we dive into it make sure to hit that like button subscribe to the channel and drop your thoughts in the comments what do you think of the Wolves pick now let’s get into it the Minnesota Timberwolves have just added a unique and exciting talent to their roster in Joan Behringer the 6’11 French center is officially the 17th pick in the 2025 NBA draft and the move has certainly raised some eyebrows behringer isn’t your typical firstrounder he’s a raw athletic big man with an intriguing skill set that could help elevate the Timberwolves front court so who is Joan Behringer well let’s start with his background the 18-year-old has been playing overseas for Cedvita Olympic in the Adriatic Basketball Association ABA which is a league that includes some of the most competitive teams from the former Yugoslavia he played in 47 games during the 2024-25 season and while his numbers weren’t eyepopping they were solid 4.7 points 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 4 blocks per game on top of that he shot a respectable 59.5% from the field he’s not yet a perimeter threat he hasn’t attempted a single three-pointer but that’s not his game just yet the thing that really stands out about Behringer is his defense the kid is a rim protector with a wingspan that measures over 7 foot4 one of the biggest at the NBA combine the Associated Press described him as a French rim runner with defensive potential which is a perfect way to sum up his game behringer’s future in the NBA will likely revolve around his ability to be a defensive presence in the paint setting screens rolling to the basket and finishing lobs his size and athleticism make him an ideal fit for a team like the Timberwolves who are looking to strengthen their front court depth now remember Behringer is still just 18 years old so there’s a lot of room for growth here he won’t turn 19 until November so he’s a very young player with a ton of potential the Timberwolves are betting on his upside and with his ability to guard the rim and protect the paint he could be an essential part of their defense moving forward but with that said he’s not going to be an immediate starter behringer will need time to develop his game before he sees major minutes in the NBA but what does this pick mean for the Timberwolves well their front court is in a bit of a state of flux heading into this off season starting power forward Julius Randall has a $30.9 million player option for next season and he has to decide whether to opt in or out of it by June 29 on top of that Naz Reed who was named sixth man of the year in 2023 24 also has a $15 million player option if either player opts into their contracts the Timberwolves will find themselves in a precarious position financially they could fall into the NBA’s second apron of the salary cap which would result in penalties that limit the team’s flexibility in free agency in trades this could have a major impact on the Timberwolves ability to make moves going forward that’s where Behringer comes in with his size and potential he could add much needed depth to their front court especially if Randall or Reed decides to walk behringer could be a long-term project that fits into the Timberwolves plans down the road especially if they find themselves needing to adjust their salary cap situation and don’t forget about the Timberwolves other options they still have team options on two-way players Luca Garza and Josh Minat both of whom are on small deals worth about $2 million each if Minnesota decides to bring these guys back it could offer additional depth at the center and forward positions that could provide even more of a buffer while Behringer continues to develop as for the Timberwolves performance last season they finished with a 4933 record securing the sixth seed in the Western Conference their playoff run was impressive as they managed to knock off the third-seated Lakers and the seventh seated Warriors before falling to the eventual NBA champions the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals that deep postseason run shows the team has a strong core and adding a player like Behringer could help them solidify their future as a contender in the West so what does this all mean for the Timberwolves and their future the selection of Joan Behringer at number 17 adds an intriguing high upside piece to their roster with his athleticism defense and room for growth he could become a key contributor for the Wolves in the coming years but with questions looming over their front court and salary cap Behringer might not be the last move they make this off season what do you think about this pick do you
