Reacting to Wizards’ first round draft picks in 2025 NBA Draft
all right Wizards fans round one of the 2025 NBA draft is in the books bejian Todd alongside Chase Hughes here at the Warf recapping the night chase we’re going to start off with the number six pick the Wizards brought in Trey Johnson the electric guard from the University of Texas what do you think about the pick
i’m surprised that he was available at six you know it’s funny i did a lot of radio interviews before the draft and Craig Hoffman in 980 earlier tonight asked me “What is the best case scenario for the Wizards?” And I said Trey Johnson falling to six i thought he was a top four prospect in this draft it kind of reminded me of years past where it’s like ah well you know Dyson Daniels or Anthony Black would be great for the Wizards but I just didn’t think they that he was going to make it to them and the reason why I think he’s a great fit is cuz he’s a really high-end offensive talent and the Wizards need offense but also they’ve laid a great defensive foundation and so I think this gives them great balance moving forward with a guy who I think in a best case scenario could look like Devin Booker someday as arguably the best shooter in the draft a prototype as a shooting guard at 6’6 and I know someone who really liked this pick and that is you be on top because you were the one who early on in the season started talking about Trey Johnson i took a closer look at him and I bought in
i have to say I’m proud to say I was the number one Trey Johnson Harper from probably day one like November I was talking to you about him i think it’s a great pick for the Wizards he’s a threelevel scorer he measured in at just under 6’5 so he’s got really good size as well at the guard position he can shoot the lights out of the ball he can shot about 40% from deep this season and like you mentioned it the Wizards need offense they finished last in the NBA last year in offensive rating all of a sudden you bring in a lethal scorer like Trey Johnson who will get minutes immediately for this team i think the fit there is perfect now let’s move on to the second pick it was originally going to be number 18 the Wizards made a deal with Utah to move back to number 21 their guy was still there it was Will Riley the wing from Illinois tell me what you think about him
i think it’s a big long-term swing sort of a lottery ticket type pick where you look at a player who was a big time recruit going to Illinois five-star recruit the highest rated recruit they’ve had in a really long time several decades he had a good freshman season but if he had lived up to the expectations he has a recruit he wouldn’t have been there on the board at 20 21st overall so a very big wing they got two wings in the case of Will Riley he’s about 68 and a half without shoes um very active um athletic around the rim rebounds pretty well defends pretty well i think there’s potential for him to be a very versatile player and he’s Canadian and that’s not the only reason why he kind of reminds me of Keshan George who’s already on the Wizards roster a guy who’s a big wing can defend can score in a variety of ways so it’s going to be interesting to see those guys grow together
i agree and when you talk about Keshan George Will Dawkins was actually asked about him and he said there are a little bit of similarities between their two games so when you bring in a guy like Will Riley who can do pretty much everything on offense at least decently well he can pass he can dribble he can shoot he’s also a relentless attacker of the hoop he can get downhill he can get to a spot inside his finishing might need a little bit of work but that’s what coming off the bench is for right he’s going to have time to develop under this Wizard system and you speaking about the fact that he’s Canadian he did train at the same facility I believe as Jamal Murray so if we bring in a player like that who is very good and can fit under that mold of a really elite scoring guard like Jamal Murray is I think the Wizards are in good hands
Wizards insiders Chase Hughes and Bijan Todd give their takes on the team’s decision to select in Tre Johnson and Will Riley in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.
