React: San Antonio Spurs add big man Luke Kornet; Is the Spurs’ long-term vision coming to light?

the spurs finally addressed the need for big man deping big man center luke cornet you are locked on spurs your daily san antonio spurs podcast part of the locked on podcast network your team every day hey welcome back to locked on spurs here on the lock on nba network i’m your host jeff garcia sports writer for kids 5 san antonio glad to have y’all back and thanks for making lockers your first and only spot for all things san antonio spurs we definitely appreciate it subscribe to lock spurs wherever you get your favorite podcast itunes spotify ken 5 plus app you know what to do go do that right now today’s episode is brought to you by fanduel right now new customers can get this 150 bucks in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins make sure to do that asap so yeah so free agency period right yeah you got to keep your head on a swivel exactly what you need to do yesterday late evening uh word slash news broke out via espn shirania that the spurs finally addressed their need at bigman depp getting boston free agent luke cornette now he was on the short list for a lot of spurs fans and other outlets that hey if the spurs are going to go this direction you know looking for this depth in freddy luke cornet was up there it was him and capella i mean or even brook lopez at times but the spurs finally got their guy to back up wimby we’re going to react to that what does he bring to san antonio is he the big that the team needed or no we’re going to address that and much more including a pre-recorded segment that me and our me and the guest we recorded before this all this broke out so heads up on that but we’ll set it up for you later on the show you probably can see it already on your screen right now is the vision of the spurs coming into light so you hear a pre-recorded segment on that in just a few minutes go to bring in our guest he is raul dominguez of the ap sports be sure to follow him on next domingue sino and raul first of all thank you for taking time out of your schedule to join us here and man you you got to keep your head in a swivel during free period don’t you
yeah exactly uh you know what i think with what within five minutes they were already announcing uh signings you know across the league so yeah it goes
yeah it definitely goes quick but um yeah there’s a flurry of moves being made last night and probably at this recording but the big one for san antonio spurs fans is they got the help at big man they got wimby some help no longer the spurs just completely small after wimby exits out the game you now have a viable big luke coronett boston free agent comes to san antonio a reported 10 no well 41 million dollar deal uh for four years that’s a little over 10 point something and change in the next four years first of all my reaction is i like it this is exactly what the spurs needed a viable big man a champion big man a veteran big man to come in and help wimi handle the big boys where wimi doesn’t have to deal with that he can handle your your jokers he can handle your embiids he can handle the big men out in the nba now he averaged six points per game 5.3 rebounds 1.6 assists last season while almost shooting 67% from the field now that’s within the three-point line marl before we dive deeper into what he brings your overall thoughts of the spurs adding big man luke cornett
it’s a tremendous move uh you know i admit that that i was uh kind of eyeballing some other players uh uh you know al horford uh brook lopez you know just because of their uh veteran experience but cornett makes um much more sense you know he’s oh yeah
he’s 29 years old which you know is older than uh you know everyone but harrison barnes
but you know he he’s um you know he sort of worked his way into the league so sure
not a lot of wear and tear on him uh you know he he still has a sort of a young personality you know very uh outgoing so i think he’s going to fit in really well with i think him and him and jeremy are gonna be like like best bud
oh yeah and you know and then that’s just off the court then on the court uh you know hustles you know he he’s just a a prototype uh spurs uh you know big man from back in the days you know when they had the guys that just you know uh hustled and and uh you know able to do just a lot of uh the these small things you know setting the setting the picks and and uh you know driving to the uh rim so i think he’s he’s a perfect fit for them
absolutely all right so let’s get into some of the uh i guess the minute facets where he helps the spurs and maybe where he doesn’t help the spurs so as mentioned last year he didn’t put up big big numbers you know as mentioned six points per game 5.3 rebounds but but for me just on the generic numbers here for a big man nearly two assists per game i like that i like i think he’s a good viable facilitator at his position now 60 67 66% of shooting from the field goal that’s good now we’ll get into the big reason why he’s probably you know maybe not the big man they need but nevertheless ro if you look at what he does around the rim he is very effective uh first of all let’s talk about that shooting that’s nearly at the rim he’s a good lob catcher lob catch dunker guy he has a nice little soft shot around the rim right there uh raul he’s definitely going to help wimi if they’re paired together kind of a twin tower look get a little scoring done in the paint while we wy we know he loves to roam away from the uh rim it’ll make wimby feel a little more comfortable he can do that yeah you know uh i think this is sort of what they envisioned with with wimby and zack collins you know when they put that pairing together uh i think this is kind of what what they were uh you know hoping for someone that that can you know make the threes and then also sort of help defend the middle um you know i zack they were kind of trying to make zach into a three-point shoot you know cornets’s already a three-point shooter uh i saw a post recently that he holds the ncaa record for most three-pointers by a sevenfooter uh
slow out
so uh i’m not sure what the exact number is but but he he’s been shooting threes you know since college days so uh yeah i i think he’s a great fit uh it’s going to really help webby out
yeah absolutely now again the primary role for him he will be the backup big and now the spurs have that option now um and again not having to rely on sohan to do it or i mean at times we saw castle out there i mean it’s just ridiculous how small they were after wimby went out so you got yourself a true sevenfooter anchor in the paint for wimi whether he’s injured knock on wood resting or even when he’s out there with them now what i also like about this too is the ripple effect raul with cornet in uniform so could play his natural position let’s talk about that you talk about them two being friends now yeah i think that’s a big reason why so would be friendly with cornet he could play that natural small forward position power forward i think he’s going to benefit so tremendously oh yeah you know it’s uh jeremy does a great job you know he’s sort of uh been the uh uh you know just sort of moved around a lot with the with the spurs you know uh point guard power forward played some center when you know when wimby was uh injured or out uh i think he played a little bit small forward too and definitely he definitely guarded you know helped defend the guard so i think this yeah definitely allows him to to slide more into that power forward uh wing defender you know i think it’ll uh it’s going to it’s going to really benefit jeremy you know uh to not move around as much uh you know in the uh offensive sets
yeah absolutely yeah and i think um another ripple effect of this too is again they have a another rim protector again should webby need uh to take a break or he’s not near the paint and it allows the spurs to even gamble on the perimeter much like they do with wimby if they want to gamble on the perimeter know when they have a human eraser like wimby now they might don’t have a human eraser like uh webby with cornet but they got at least the little nub piece of the pencil there uh he averaged about one block per game last season in boston in 18 minutes per game now i bring that up is because don’t take that you know like oh my god just one block a game for a 71 72 guy recall in the postseason row he had a i think it was a playoff high of seven blocks against the knicks so he’s definitely a capable rim protector he can deter shots at the rim
i think that’s just crucial for the spurs i mean that’s just huge for san antonio because of that presence they have to complement defensive present uh with cornet now cornett is known for in boston last year i don’t know if you heard about this the the cornet contest did you hear about that
yeah yeah yeah they call it the eclipse sometimes now what that is he’s not a traditional shot blocker with you know one hand and blocking he does the fundamental way two hands up and he tries to block it so there’s that but it’s it’s effective it’s effective i was looking at some of the notes here uh his he was he held he held opponents with that two-handed unorthodox shaaki method 28% on contested threes and then uh yeah he can also be a very switchable defender he can defend the five he can even defend the four the spurs got themselves a good backup center and rough kind of on the cheap wouldn’t you think so raul
yeah uh you know the thing is with with cornet you know like i like i mentioned earlier he sort of uh you know almost willed himself uh to an nba career uh sort of the way danny green did where you know he was kind of bouncing around and then you know established himself and i i i saw where i think his career earnings were seven maybe i think it was 17.1 million coming you know leading up to this offseason and and obviously he heclipsed his you know entire career earnings with one contract with the spurs you 44 million so uh you know that spurs obviously did their due diligence and knew that he was a guy that that fit their system and and and more importantly you know fit their their payroll
yeah exactly uh other little positives that he’s going to bring to san antonio and i’m leaving this picture there everybody so we get a little thirsty for that next season next season can’t come out any sooner now raul what i like about it too is his ability to get good screens and play effectively in the pick and roll now it’s very impressive so i pulled up a stat here well check this out the top 10 pick and roll combos last year it was cornet and tatum points per possession in a pick and roll situation 1.3 and 440 picks that was only second to murray and joker out in denver uh they average about 1.34 points per game in pick and roll combo situations there so that already alone should bring a smile to a spurs fans face knowing that whether that’s a pick and roll with castle or with fox or some of that that he’s going to be effective at the rim role yeah i mean i’m i’m uh you know assuming that that cornet’s going to come off the bench but uh you know considering how young they are and and how dynamic they are uh i have a feeling that that either castle or harper or fox maybe all three of them at times are going to be be paired with the the second unit you know like
they’ll take the starters out you know and keep like say keep castle out there
for a little bit of a longer run so uh
i i think cornet’s always going to have a a dynamic point guard out with out there with him so uh you know i think you know like i’d mentioned earlier as far as like he does all the little things you know sets you know sets the picks and the screens and you know rolls to the basket you know he uh
reminds me a little bit of uh you know a little little uh a better uh say will you know uh will purdue or you know thiago you know just that type of that yman’s work oh yeah
so i i think yeah you know you mentioned the the the high numbers uh with adam i think it’s going to be something similar maybe not at quite the same volume but it’s going to be similar where where they’re gonna be uh fox or castle or
uh you know harper yeah
yeah are going to love playing alongside him yeah even me and you raul when we get out there on the court we love playing on that with cornhead but there just so many good things why this edition is great uh just real quick though the spurs haven’t as of this record haven’t officially announced it but it’s all but said and done hey one more thing before we hit the break here is the double big lineup of wimi and cornet i think it could work to work well together they maybe it’s not the traditional twin towers back in the day robinson and duncan this is a different type of twin tower this is a twin tower where wimby can roam a bit we we know spurs fans pull their hair out about that in playing away from the basket but he’s effective he’s a capable three-point shooter he can definitely get to the rim driving you know he’s a capable dribbler i think that’ll even allows wimi to feel comfortable out there just as much as it does for sohan playing at that power forward position your thoughts yeah you know i don’t um i don’t know how much uh cornet’s going to start but but again with the sort of the overlapping between the the two squads i mean wimby played a lot of uh spent a lot of time with the second unit uh last season
i i could definitely see him doing that again uh with with uh you know and that’s you know they’re both very good passers as well so um you know i i could see a lot of uh uh you know almost like what david used to do for tim you know sort of be at the top of key and you know feed him for uh you know lobs or you know set him up set him up so i i i could definitely see uh uh a lot of that happening next season
yeah we’re not done talking about the spurs edition of luke cornett finally addressing the need for a big man uh when we get back we’re going to continue talking about the good things and yeah maybe some bad things uh that cornet won’t address next season all that and more with ro dominguez with the ap sports make sure to follow him on x at domingue make sure you do that right now hey everybody i want to talk to you about fanduel summer sports are in full swing right and whether you’re a ball about baseball under the lights or golf on the green or highstakes soccer action fanduel is the best way to make every game even more exciting you ready to follow the action right why not make things a little bit more interesting with fanduel you can get in on the game while your friends are getting sunburned at the beach they got new daily promotions fun ways to bet you can track your favorite matchups easy to use fast payouts makes even the regular season game feel like mustwatch events hey you can even place a same game parlay and watch a bet ride into the ninth inning fanduel makes it feel like you’re just part of the action new new to fanduel well not a problem new customers can just bet five bucks and get 150 bucks in bonus bets if your first bet wins that’s a pretty good deal there open the fanduel app today or visit fando.com to get started and we’re back right here on locked off spurs joined by ro dominguez audio version of ro dominguez fortunately he could not make a video but nevertheless we do appreciate him taking time out of his schedule to uh talk about the victory news spurs added a big man yes they addressed it bringing in free agent out of boston luke cornet now there’s some more little positives but we’ll get to the negatives in a little bit uh one other thing that jumps out at me is this is that not not just the fact that you have a quality big you got somebody that’s within the age range of this young young group but those intangibles we mentioned that he’s a champion with boston you know he knows what it takes uh to succeed in the postseason and next season it feels like we heard even from dylan harper that they want to make the playoffs trouble having cornet with that experience on the court can help cuz now it’s going to be him and barnes as the lone players that have playoff experience yeah and you know he he’s a a champion but he’s you know again he’s uh sort of built himself at the champion you know so so he’s one of these he’s not uh you know someone that came into the league as you know number one pick and just has known success you know he he knows what what uh how much hard work that steps that you have to do to take to to be a better player and for the team to be better so you know the sacrifices that you have to make so uh i think that’s going to be valuable with with this team just sort of uh you know leaning on him and yeah you know following his lead you know because i i know luke’s a really hard worker so you know uh the his young teammates are going to see how hard he’s working
yeah absolutely uh one other thing i do like he’s durable he played 73 games last season uh with boston and in 2023 24 season 63 and then in the 22 23 season with boston uh 69 games so he’s pretty durable didn’t get 82 like back in the day but he gets uh pretty close to it as well interesting little note here did you know cornet last season ended up leading boston in both offensive rating and def and net rating during the regular season offensive rating of 121.2 net rating of 14.9 with boston now obviously different situation different squad you know spurs don’t have a tatum or a jaylen brown but nevertheless you know that he kind of leads into what i’m going to bring up now he knows his role raul he’s not going to go above and beyond that he’s not going to try to be the hero he’s just going to go out there and do what he does best raul he just knows his his role in the team your thoughts
yeah yeah i mean like i you know talked about earlier you know he’s someone that that um you know has worked his way uh
you know into having an nba career so you know he he’s not going to come over here thinking like oh you know i’m a world champion you know y’all got to listen to me or you know i’m i’m going to or you know or come in thinking you know that he’s he’s just going to be given playing time you know he he’s worked uh hard to get where he’s at and you know that’s not gonna
you know that’s not going to change with him getting a bigger contract he’s still going to be hungry uh still he still i’m sure he still feels like he has a lot to pro to prove you know uh so he he’s yeah he’s definitely going to uh u you know fit in well and and
s i think he’s you know one thing i noticed about the spurs that that i like i’m sorry about that uh you know as far as like you hear castle you heard harper you even hear wimby talk about you know they how they they are willing to make sacrifices to their game to help help out the team and i think cornett’s going to fit in well with that as well because because he has definitely uh sacrificed uh you know to help uh
every team he’s been been with especially the celtics yeah absolutely no look we can be here all show long and find so many aspects of why cornell is the right move and overall it is it is the right move is a guy that’s a cheap um that didn’t break the bank for the spurs he’s a defense firstminded backup center he addresses the spurs biggest need right now this off season again that is big man dep behind victor wammo he can finish at the rim we all know that stuff right but there are some negatives and the big one is ro you touched on you said during college years he was a good three-point shooter but last season with boston he didn’t take any three-point shots um you know i know for his career i believe it’s hovering around 36% shooting from the three line uh actually 32% career from deep i do you think he’s going to be a limited floor spacer in this spurs system no i mean i mean the spurs want their big men to to shoot threes so i think he’s going to uh get more opportunities uh and you know um you know the the you know the more shots he puts up the the better he’s going to be able to get get into a rhythm you know he’s going to come in knowing that that’s what spurs want so i i think that’ll help him you know just coming in knowing you know i have to have to shoot threes you know this is what the team wants from me
yeah exactly um i’m trying to look at here now um his best uh three-point shooting year uh h let’s see here now yeah he you know again he is a career 32% shooting his best year was the 2018-19 season when he was with the knicks 36% shooting from three now that year he took about four three-point shots a game and made about one and a half so we’ll give two so yeah we’ll see we’ll see if more opportunities are there for him at the three line i think the spurs are going to encourage him to take the three-point shot and think about it too boston did he really need to take three-point shooting you know boston was one of the deadlier teams when it comes to the line derek white tatum brown the list goes on and on they just were loaded with three-point threats maybe you know cornet didn’t have to do that so we’ll see if that opens up too other thing too raul is as much as we glow about the contract reportedly offered uh for year uh 41 million around there he does have a limited upside though do you think it was a little bit more maybe a little bit of an overpay for a guy that has limited upside no i think uh it’s kind of what they needed to do for the market uh i think i think three years are guaranteed the fourth is a team option okay
um
you know he’s 29 so um you know most a lot of nba players hit their primer you know early 30s so uh i i i don’t think it’s it’s too much of a stretch on the contract uh and and the other thing is if for some reason it doesn’t work out it’s it’s not a huge contract you know it’s it’s a contract that that uh can be easily traded away uh you know you see all these superstars today you know that have these huge contracts and how difficult it is for teams to move them so if for some reason it doesn’t work out he’s got a very tradable contract uh you know but but i think i think he’s going to wind up uh if he does kind of what i expect him to do as a as a backup and helping one out i think it’s going to be a really really good contact for spurs yeah i’m right there with you overall i think this just does it all for san antonio it you know addresses the need for for a big man check um you know it’s it’s a guy that can spell wimi check and whatnot remember against san antonio was that back in uh march
didn’t he drop like 15 points on san antonio and
he grabbed like he grabbed like 16 rebound had some massive monster double double versus the spurs shot 70% versus san antonio so i i think the spurs will be okay having that nightmare now with the spurs now
yeah and um that that game you know if i remember correctly it was just hustle you know him just hustling so just hustling
yeah i mean you know i don’t think he’s going to come in here and be an all-star uh you know but the spurs don’t need that they need they need a quality big man to so whenever wimby leaves the court there’s not that big drop off like there has been
you know def especially defensively uh you know when they haven’t uh uh especially you know obviously with the smaller lineup but but just
uh when the wip went off the courts like the the whole defensive presence just you know just changed
yeah i mean all these teams you know as soon as walked off the court seemed like as soon as he took his first step out you know out of bounds they drove to the the basket you know so um yeah i i think that’s a big thing i think is that’s going to be better uh you know for the continuity you know between the first and second unit absolutely absolutely and i guess another negative part of this too i think this all signals the end of mamu san antonio what do you think
well i hope not but i i i think it does but i hope not um you know it’s gonna be tough for them to obviously to sign him with with the salary cap uh love mu great player great guy you know but uh it’s in in a way it reminds me of when the spurs had bond and
oh yeah
you know for this you know the what uh boon said you know that um you know that he uh wanted to come back and stay with the spurs you know on a on a smaller contract you know but pop said you know you’re crazy you know go you know go make your money though
yeah so so i’m wondering if it maybe it might be a little bit of that situation as well with with with maui you know go somewhere else and get more money than he would he would get from the spurs so but but if if he does leave that’s going to be a a big blow as far as you know locker room and just
just his presence yeah exactly but overall
ro it wasn’t a a sexy signing and it wasn’t like oh you know they signed brook lopez imagine that had happened you know or something like that but it’s it’s a it’s a hardworking big man again you know just his overall you know hustle as you highlighted you know his competitiveness you know the do all the dirty work underneath the paint and within the rim area i i think this is a great addition for the spurs fan sentiment i think leans towards positive there are some pe some fans that are like “what are you doing spurs?” you know he’s 29 30 years old you’re giving him that contract and you know he’s not a floor spacer but you know if you weigh it i think they’re more pro uh luke cornet fans than anti-luke cornet fans from the silver and black so yeah know all the most of the time those spurs fans are saying like he doesn’t force space the floors you know he doesn’t do that but again look where he was playing last year in boston they have tons of four spacers but he’s definitely an upgrade over what they got you know what they what they have right now that is a huge huge upgrade for san antonio so uh your final thoughts on the spurs adding cornet r
uh you know i i just think it’s it’s a nice solid addition for them you know typical kind of the spurs kind of signing you know they they they sign uh you know sort of an almost under the radar you know player that that that you know fits the the role that that they need perfectly and uh you know just just looking at the uh internet you know a lot of guys that cover basketball the nba regularly you know are praising the pickup you know and a lot of uh reporters and uh people from boston you know they’re all saying the same thing like they hate to see him go but you know they say he deserves this contract you know and they’re happy for him so i think that says a lot you know just sort of uh you know the uh what he’s built in in in boston uh you know just just sort of the appreciation that that uh fans and and the media have for him
oh yeah he’s a huge fan favorite in boston uh so i’m pretty sure they’re earning as well but you know boston they’re definitely going through a change right now it’s almost like not a fire sale but it’s kind of a fire cell right now in boston but nevertheless hey you know welcome luke cornett to san antonio okay so those are our thoughts make sure to let us know what you think about the spurs adding the big man you can let ra know on x at dominguez cinco you can let me know by going to lockdown spurs youtube page leaving a comment also so how we’re going to say this so this is the dangers of recording pre-recording during the free period right so raul and i actually recorded a show before the luke cornet news came out so what you’re about to see next is a pre-recorded segment now it’s not about the big man the deaf you know that but there might be a little sprinkle of it i’m going to try my best to kind of weed that out but if some gets by me it is what it is you all know what happened but in the next segment again it’s pre-recorded uh we’re talking about the vision of the spurs you know are we starting to see the vision come together uh from san antonio gm brand right you know from the tanking years to the low-key tanking years to get in the lottery are we starting to come out of the light so we’re going to talk about that so raul um they’ve been warned raul they know it’s it was recorded before the cornet deal your thoughts
yeah i mean uh i was trying to think we had mentioned any names but i can’t remember but um you know i think this this does go toward uh what we were talking about just sort of the way they they’ve sort of built uh this team to to sort of uh i mean looks like next season you know they’re ready
i think this past season they were hoping to make the playoffs
i think this year they’re expecting to make the playoffs want to play in the playoffs
absolutely absolutely all right so with that being said again enjoy the next segment it’s ro and i talking about the spurs vision enjoy it and yeah uh we’ll leave your thoughts again ro dominguez on x at dominguez me on x at jeff g spurs zone all right coming up next we’re going to talk about the spurs vision ro thank you for hopping on again let’s get started uh so are we starting to see the big vision now with brian wright and the roster construction i think it’s safe to say tanking seasons are all but over uh there’s really no reason for the spurs to tank they got themselves the franchise player they got seemingly you know complimentary pieces to surround wimi harper carter castle fox the list goes on and on are we starting to see the big picture now where they’re trying to construct in san antonio role yeah i mean you know uh brian and wright talked about this and uh you as far as their their draft strate strategy excuse me uh it’s something that goes back to rc and pop as well you know they they draft based on you know talent not not on me u you know but i think it’s all sort of falling into place for them you know because right now this is a very uh wing dominated league of course you got you know the the great big men you know like giannis and and obviously victor here in san antonio but you know you look at the finals i mean you know shay and and hallebertton
uh jaylen williams uh it’s a very wing dominated league and and spurs you know pick up uh you
uh you know they already had fox and they had castle and then they pick up two dynamic wings and and dylan harper and carter bryant so i mean it’s uh yeah i mean everything just seems to be falling into place uh again you know spurs don’t draft you know they draft for talent rather than than need but every all the pieces just seem to have been kind of keep magically falling into place for the spurs right now
yeah exactly it feels like we’re starting to see the vision now and that vision is basically you hit it okc it really is during uh brian wright’s post round draft night conference there you go he uh even said you know he brought up okc he said “hey look at oklahoma city.” he was they had a six-footed guy defending a big man in the paint uh during the playoffs so he pointed to that and look i know he’s made it very clear that they go on best available versus need but i did ask him i said “look,” and i said “brian i understand you just said you know best available i get that.” but i go “was on the to-do list on draft night maybe just maybe a big man on the radar.” and once again he doubled down he said “not really.” he goes “not really.” he goes “again he goes he goes there are other ways to construct the roster.” so again refreshing and pointing to positionless basketball and that’s what it feels like moving forward with this team rebel it feels like they’re really going to buy in 100% to positionless basketball aren’t they
yeah you know and uh i know some people are are asking you know if fox uh castle and harper uh and then you know maybe possibly even another wing um you know can play alongside each other and
you know i i definitely think they can i mean if you look at uh the finals uh you know uh you know unfortunately tyrese uh got injured but when he got injured it’s like the wings uh an okc just dominated because you know they uh soon as you know uh one of the patients would get the ball they just put two guys on them and they were having a hard hard time getting getting it into their offense uh you know but where you know the spurs you know potentially have three you know essentially essentially have three point guards starting you know they’re not you know okc can’t do that you know if you if they decide to to try and double team or try and pressure you know the ball out of fox’s hand then you know castle can take over harper can take over even even victor uh you know and if jeremy starts you know jeremy had the uh the experiment with the point guard which didn’t you know didn’t go well but but it really enhanced his playmaking abilities and and his uh in his uh ball handling so uh i i think this is perfect again again people were kind of wondering where whether or not they can fit together but uh to me you know uh okc is you know the the standard bearer right now um you know but uh you know again spurs have so many options you know okc can’t do uh what they did with the pacers you know and just focus on on one or two guys right uh to try and slow down the offense you know that uh spurs have a huge plus uh in ball handling now which is something they haven’t had um i don’t know since maybe parker and genobi maybe yeah yeah it’s been a while since they had that and even then you know the mvc was not even close to what it is now you know back then it was still traditional you know traditional point guard shooting guard fiveman and so on and so forth now it just feels like if you’re just a basketball player that’s what it feels like can you play basketball okay good then you can play the five you can play the three the one and whatnot and with dylan harper you have that i mean i don’t obviously cannot play the five but you could probably push him to the four right one two three four now in today’s nba right ro
yeah i mean and like you know like you mentioned what what brian said you know they had a
you know got uh i think jaylen it was jaylen williams he was talking about was guarding the center you know
uh castle castle at times was guarding big men last year you know when they were playing with the smaller lineups
uh you know and and uh castle’s very physical dylan’s very physical it’s it’s not ideal for them to be you know guard garden centers uh but but you know castle held his own and i i think dylan can as well because dylan’s very physical and you know he’s got that you know that that dog in him that they talk about you know great defenders have so uh you know i i could see both of them you know at times maybe guarding yeah you know either a four maybe even possibly a five
depending on who the five is
yeah exactly and the vision now it just definitely seems positionless that for sure 100% that is the route they’re going but is there other aspects of this vision that brian ry and the spurs have we’re going to talk about that right here on lockdown spurs with ro sports football on x at domingga we’re going to do that right now right now we get by the way ro can can you repeat this line to me because i always wanted this to happen okay nerd all right so all you have to say is jeff you will go to the deco boss system just say that
jeff you will go to the boss system
yes yes yes as i’m calling in the snow after after i got defeated by the wampa monster there all right we are talking about the spurs and the big vision here are we starting to see that vision see that light at the end of the tunnel what are the spurs planning where are they building after tanking seasons and bad bad win loss records we’re starting to see it right so in the first segment we said “yeah it’s kind of obvious they’re going positionless that is very obvious they’re following the otc blueprint and away we go.” but i well i think there’s another aspect of this rebuild/ bigger vision is defense they got some defensive monsters if everything pans out wimby no more need to be said yeah there’s win but then there’s castle then there’s sohan then there’s potentially harper with some of the scouts they could be and get there to a really good defender in the nba it seems to be they’re going to really focus on that defensive end with the type of players they have on the roster roll
oh definitely um you know like he mentioned and you know de’aran’s you know pretty good defender as well you know he’s highly underrated you know very good getting steals as well and you know i’m sure that uh you know he’s going to get a little bit more opportunities you know with with uh you know dylan and castle probably going to wind up picking you know the uh defensive assignments on on you know the bigger scorers so uh you know but then you got jeremy sohan uh you know uh so i mean if if the starting five the way i just kind of projected is you know uh fox castle harper victor and jeremy and i mean those are four elite defenders you know and then uh then you know pretty good one in fox so that that’s going to be that’s going to be difficult for any team yeah yeah and you think about this too we’re going to get into this in a little bit but they’re not even done putting a roster together they so obviously you’re looking for a big man more on that in a bit so you bring in another big defender in there yay good luck opponents try to score on this team and the good thing about it is that wimi how much it opens up that aspect of this rebuild and the vision is because your foxes harpers castle etc they can gamble on the perimeter they want to take a chance go for it when you got wimby backing you up you can take those risk uh with a little bit more ease a little bit you know you can breathe a little better so castle is trying to just really get that ball steel he misses it no problem wimpy’s there he’s going to make everybody second guess themselves so that’s good i think this team could possibly be one of the better defensive teams next season i’m actually anticipating it and i think the spurs should be one of the top 10 defenses next season once everything comes together last season we saw that role remember they started off as one of the best defensive teams in the league and then they kind of sputtered out as the season went on
however with the type of players the roster makeup as of this recording there’s no reason for them not be a minimum 10 top 10 defense next season yeah and and uh you know like pop always uh would always talk about you know uh defense leads to offense so
mhm
i i think that’s going to be another exciting aspect of this team is you know if they’re able to get steals and you know uh you know limit them to uh to one shot you know get that rebound i mean there’s also a lot of athleticism and speed on this team i mean carter harper uh and uh fox and then you know wimy’s very fast too uh then jeremy’s you know jeremy’s very fast uh too you know especially uh you know getting down the court cuz you know he loves going to the rim for rally oops and such so uh not only defensively i really do think i i agree i think they’re going to be top 10 maybe even top five
uh defensively you know depending on how that second unit plays out
but
exactly but uh you know just all the opportunities that uh that defense is going to allow their offense you know whether it’s steals or you know again getting a rebound or or
you know just running i mean uh that’s going to be kind of a i think a scary sight for some defenses to see
you know carter fox and and harper uh
you know on the break yeah exactly and we didn’t even bring this up and i’m going to bring it up now r sure sure we talk about the players and who they drafted and you know the the usual suspect for wimi and etc regarding defense but talk about how big the pickup of sean sweeney was from dallas i mean that’s huge he was pretty much one of the reason why they played some pretty good defense in dallas when they were at full power i think that’s going to bolster the spurs not only the defensive end too but the development so so the pieces coming together even extends to the coaching staff
ro yeah i mean that that was a huge pickup from for the spurs i mean uh it’s a guy that i thought was going to stay in uh dallas but you know
but but you know mavericks have been kind of funny about you know who you think is going to stay there forever so um but uh yeah i mean it’s a huge pickup great defensive coach uh huge basketball iq and then him and uh mitch you know have a good relationship working relationship you know uh they both know each other well uh so i think that’s going to help as well you know they’re going to be able to to bounce ideas off each other going to be able to um i think sean’s gonna uh u you know sort of uh test mitch or you know sort of push him to be a better coach uh you know which which is something that that uh i keep mentioning pop because it’s sort of pop set the groundwork but pop always loved having great assistant coaches that would push him you know and then they’d always talk about how they would sort of challenge pop and you know i think it was uh hardy will hardy that was joking around said you know pop would fire them all the assistants almost every day because you know he would get upset with them
kind of challenging them you know but obviously he didn’t actually fire him but you know that was the kind of intensity you know like they were pushing each other
to get better and i think shawn’s going to do that for mitch uh and uh you know he’s he’s sean’s very well respected great defensive coach great ideas great great uh set so uh i think the spurs are going to be wide open uh to listening to him and and and hearing him and
uh yeah i mean i can’t wait to see that defense uh you know from the players but also you know as far as what what sweeny’s gonna
going to do with that squad
yeah exactly yeah i i think and not i think i know what the vision is now for san antonio moving forward will next season have its moments where you kind of sitting there watching it or you’re at the game being like “oh man this sucks.” you know they get beat yeah probably but you can already feel where this team is going obviously they’re young uh obviously they’re going to they’re going positionless and obviously there’s an attention to defense right now that is what the spurs makeup is right now in this i guess we could is it safe to say we’re in the final stages of the rebuild it feels like it right feels like we’re right we’re right at that borderline between still in the rebuild r and then two steps and we’re out
yeah you know feels like it
yeah i think i talked about it before you know i i really do think that they have uh the potential to be a top four uh seat in in the the west this season and um you know i’ll stick by it you know especially i think they’re going to make a couple of moves for for a big man um but yeah i definitely think that they’re going to be top four you know at worst maybe top five in the west uh so that rebuild is yeah i think it’s it’s over but uh you know brian wright did just a masterful job
with that as far as you know cuz cuz they’re they’re sort of coming out of the rebuild but they still have these draft picks you know from atlanta you have you have minnesota’s coming up later on uh so you know even though uh you know they’re not you know quote unquote tanking they they they still have the potential to have some pretty high draft picks
yeah they definitely do let’s not forget next season i mean first of all i hope they’re they are not in the lottery because of their own doing but technically they still can be because of the atlanta pick right
so yeah they they could still so there’s that aspect of it you know they could still bring in a top level talent next season uh after the season’s over in the draft so good things are ahead for the spurs all right raul we thank you for taking time out of your schedule today to join us here locked on spurs we appreciate you being the voice from above uh on this episode and again make sure to follow him on everybody at domingue cinco do that right now all right everybody uh hey before we let you go make sure to subscribe to lock on spurs where we get your favorite podcast itunes spotify kinsfy plus app youtube you know what to do go do that asap we’ll be back tomorrow as the spurs offseason continues summer league is right around the corner we might be talking about that on tomorrow’s episode of lockdown spurs so for raul dominguez i am jeff garcia we’re gonna put a lock on this episode of lot on spurs

  1. He’s a great locker room guy too! I was watching some Celtics guys covering free agency yesterday and they were legitimately hurt when they lost him. They love him. I think he will be a fan favorite 🎉
