Chicago Bulls Re-Sign Tre Jones But What’s Next In Free Agency?

free agency has started for the Chicago Bulls and the Bulls have already made one move and that is resigning Trey Jones We’re going to talk about what could be next for the Chicago Bulls Rumors around Iodumu and Kobe White All that and more on today’s Locked on Bulls [Music] You are Locked on Bulls your daily Chicago Bulls podcast Part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day Thank you for tuning in to Lockdown Bulls member of the Lockdown Podcast Network where it’s your team every single day That’s Pat the designer host and creator of the Windy City Breeze and host of the Chicago Bears podcast over at ESPN 1000 I’m Hayes host creator of Chicago Bull Central and Chicago Bear Central YouTube pages and podcast And today’s episode is brought to you guys by FanDuel If I can get the ad read up Uh right now new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins Pat we’re one day in free agency The Bulls have not done a whole lot But with that said the Bulls only have one roster spot open Once again the Bulls find themselves with all guaranteed ro uh roster spots 14 with the signing of Trey Jones to a three-year $24 million deal We’ll talk about the state of the roster but first off grading the deal or looking at the deal how do you feel about the Trey Jones deal
Listen I I I played uh who makes 19 million with Jordan JT over on the Morning Breeze this morning If I told you the guy who’s uh 11.5 points per game 4.9 assists 3.2 rebounds one steal a game on 57% shooting and 88% from the free throw line with an assist to turnover ratio That is dominant is not the dude making $19 million I think most of us would feel like it’s a pretty good deal Uh I think this is a great deal
I’ve seen people say that this is a overpaid I’m like what what error are you living in
No bro You got to understand I had to tell somebody this yesterday No one has changed their brain to the percentage
That’s that’s unless you are a basketball content creator And to be honest with you unless you are a good basketballer
I was about to say because a lot of it either
you have not changed your brain to percentage I had people sitting there telling me yesterday that Luke Cornet was an overpay Luke Cornet makes 6% of the salary cap Yeah And Trey Jones makes 4.7% To put this in perspective Pat Trey Jones makes less of a percentage of the salary cap than Javon Carter when he made his when he signed his deal Just put that in perspective Now Javon Carter makes less of a percentage now because of course the cap has gone up But when Javon Carter signed his deal at that time $65 million was 5% of the salary cap So on scale like Trey Jones deal is a better value even though it’s more money than at the time Javon Carter and already in a partial season where he only played 18 games he gave us more than Javon Carter has in two seasons Yeah So to to me listen I I think this is a a a solid deal for the Bulls Now Trey Jones got to be healthy U but he has that hasn’t really been an issue for him throughout his career Um and I think listen if you give him serious minutes I think it’s somebody who just creates an incredible amount of not only just oncourt impact but I mean if you talk about him as a secondary ball handler I think if you talk about you know him bringing that the defense and the hustle that he has you know almost being kind of a a a engine off of the bench if you will that’s that’s a perfect situation You also can put him in to situations where if Giddy is banged up or Giddy needs a breather that day Trey Young is the perfect kind of guy that can fit into that starting point guard role for a couple of games and give you exactly what you need I think he creates rotational flexibility I think that he gives you uh um exactly what you’re looking for as far as a defensive point guard in a defensive lineup And I think it possibly might even help Io Dumu If you want Trey Jones to be a main ball handler off the bench and you can let IO kind of play that two-3 role where he thrived in over the last couple of seasons Like those are just good situations for you to be in This is a move that just actually makes sense and it was the one move that I felt like you had to get done once you got Lonzo off the team
Yeah I mean it opened up the doorway to that That was one of the things that we talked about when they resigned Lonzo is like our bam are we going to lose Trey now because of having Lonzo And so the Bulls end up flipping Lonzo And me and you kind of alluded to this when the trade happened If you’re now looking at it as trading Lonzo got you Isaac Kuru and afforded you to be able to keep Trey Jones
I’m taking those two players like versus what what how Lonzo has just been unhealth unhealthy for throughout his career So I think it’s a really good deal what Trey did here and people like to talk about it in the sense that we’re signing him for only the little bit that he gave here Look at the two years prior to LA Now we know last season he lost his role It is what it is He lost his role in the Spurs They got they got Stefan uh Stefan Castle then they uh traded for um Fox and before that Yeah Before that they had Chris Paul right
Yeah Chris Paul was on the team to start That’s that’s who he lost his job to was Chris Paul
Yeah it was Chris Paul So like but if you look at the two seasons before that he averaged 12 point 12.9 points and 10 points per game on almost 50% shooting from the field and decent uh three-point shooting Like this is a Trey is worth this money It’s it’s not any question people who are still talking If you think this deal is an overpay again I wore the the Tommy Pickles shirt today because a lot of you Bulls fans are acting like babies A lot of y’all acting like babies So yeah I I this was an intentional t-shirt pick today A lot of y’all’s acting like babies
An intentional t-shirt pick Is that Listen Listen most times most I’m going to lie to you Most of the times I pick what hat I want to wear and then I find the shirt to match it That’s the way that I go about my wardrobe
I just show up I just I just
I mean the time I showed up in a row where I was like it was either coffee or clothes
Yeah that was crazy That was just
Hey listen You almost got it uh today again I’m not going to lie to you bro Like it it was it was today where I was like “All right I I may have to make a business decision here Is it going to be actual being clothed or is it going to be coffee?” But luckily I I looked at the clock wrong and had an extra five minutes so had time to do both
I appreciate that Uh no listen I mean Meanwhile I missed out on the coffee I’m dressed though Um no I I think here’s the big thing about the the Trey Jones signing that I do love though is that you’re getting a toughness built into this team with players that already have it You don’t have to develop it out of it Modest Bzelis we see what he is I think Josh Giddy even has some of that Maybe it goes underrated because I think we just think Australians are the nicest people in the world but like
they’re really not They also can like kill you You know what I mean Like
you know you know what it is Australians and Chicagoans There’s a lot of overlap there bro
Yeah You know what I mean
Like Australians are like a mix Chicago and New York and New Yorkers bro It’s It’s a weird or Boston maybe Bostonians a little bit there But yeah Hey man You mind your business on that copy bear that’s on the roof of my house Don’t worry about that That’s
exactly bro Like when you when you you have a country that’s bugs are that big on average you expect them to be nice people
Hey bro I’m just saying when when you got to walk the spiders you know what I mean Like the fighters are literally tax dependent There’s only so much niceness that’s possible bro Like
you claim you claim two more dependence on your taxes this year What’s going on with that I got a couple of wolf spiders up in the basement Huntsman spiders spiders bro Like no I’m good on that man It’s a lady She just got a huntsman She on TikTok and and I’m pretty sure it’s real but she may have it as a pet She seem like one of them but it’s literally just in the background of her video and she doesn’t address it So she’s just talking about something completely different and just doesn’t address it Every time I see it I’m just like we not going to address the dog that’s walking up the wall in the background We not going to talk about that
The aas of spiders the huntsman spiders And then you see a blue hunt it’s just like “Yeah why is it blue?” Yeah I’m good on that man Uh but anyway
any any uh any country that has a season of spiderw webs
I’m good
Yeah bro I’m good They different over there They different Um but final verdict on the Trey Jones deal now Now um now Trey Jones got to be healthy Uh you know he ended the season on a mid-foot sprain Doesn’t seem to be anything that’s going to you know bother him and harpen him Multiple midfoot sprains throughout the season Most people have a full recovery So Trey just gets to focus on it Josh Giddy did tweet after the uh the Trey Jones deal was announced uh in his story or posted in his Instagram story He’s happy about the deal So that’s good Trey Jones was just a good guy He vibed with this team You got to see a lot of it I think that’s good man
Yeah it felt like he he fit right in when he got here I mean he had the big game What was it The one 18 um what did he end up putting up in that 1812 and three and over Utah and and you saw like how the team really bonded with him off of that as well I mean just he came in and gave you everything you needed him to give you Like it it was a breath of fresh air And to be honest with you the part that I like about it that probably the most is it’s stuff we saw him do in San Antonio two years ago Yeah Like literally it wasn’t like “Oh my god I’m shocked that Trey Jones is doing this right?” Like it was literally what we saw him doing in San Antonio before Wim got there and it was like “Oh okay This is exactly who this kid is.” Like I like that And I think that to me is is you’re signing pieces that make sense for the team which when we get to the IO and Kobe trade rumors I mean like Kaminga keeps popping up It just don’t make sense
at this point It makes less sense I don’t understand why it’s still there
It makes zero sense
It makes zero sense
The only thing makes less sense is signing DeAndre No the thing that makes less sense is if you if you try to resign Nick Levich to a four-year contract which
Oh but give us time But with that said we’re going to continue the conversation talking uh more about Josh Giddy’s deal in the state of the Bulls roster having 14 guaranteeing contracts But first we got to get into a message from FanDuel Summer sports are in full swing and whether you’re all about baseball under the lights golf on the green or high stakes soccer action FanDuel is the best way to make every game even more exciting You’ve already uh you’re already following the action Why not make it a little more thrilling With FanDuel you can get in on the game while your friends are getting sunbathe sunburned at the beach I’ve been using FanDuel to track my favorite matchups and the app keeps it fresh with new daily promotions that are fun ways to bet It’s easy to use fast to pay out and makes even regular season games feel like much events Whether I’m placing a same game parlay or watching a a bet ride into the ninth inning FanDuel makes it feel like I’m part of the action If you’re new to FanDuel new customers can bet just $5 and get 150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins Open the FanDuel app today and visit fanuel.com to get started More Locked on Bulls coming up next [Music] All right Pat So no Josh Giddy deal as of yet Um didn’t really hear much on it at all yesterday Uh one thing that did develop is that the Brooklyn Nets the only team that really could offer Josh Giddy the money that he wants With them trading Cam Johnson to the Nuggets and taking back Michael Porter Jr they’re now down to about $17 million in cap space They can get to 25 by waving some of the the non-G guaranteed players that they have So maybe they’re still an option there But I want to start off with this before we talk about the the 14 guaranteed spots Josh Giddy now that the the suitors are kind of off the board do you maybe think that the Bulls can negotiate a little bit less than that 30 million You still think it’s I said 30 million
Listen if you’re Josh Giddy it is
I mean you can negotiate whatever you want but if you’re Josh Giddy it isn’t And the the one thing you don’t want to do is is overplay your hand in this situation One the one thing I’ve learned covering sports is there’s a lot of times where um you know I I want to play for you but but I want to play for you at this price And if you don’t want to give me this price I’ll play for them for less That is very true But for you I’ve shown you this I’m going to make this And that’s just how it works out in the sports sometimes And you you got to pay that price By the way you’re still not spending You’re People are acting like this 30 million for Giddy is like destroying the bull salary cap Like you’re nowhere near the the first apron You’re nowhere near the second apron right now You’re not It It’s not even like shifting anything for you if you’re the Chicago Bulls right now It’s literally just keeping the players on the team that you wanted to keep on the team anyway Like I if you can get it less and it and it doesn’t feel disrespectful to Giddy I’d be fine with that But you’ve been negotiating the 30 million just because you can get it cheaper I don’t think that’s a situation where you probably want to get it cheaper And again like it’s not like it’s hurting you to make future moves We’ll talk about some of the trades that could come here but like there’s a bunch of options that the Bulls have and realistically speaking heading into 2026 with Josh Giddy on the roster you still have a ton of cap flexibility Yeah Yeah I mean they the cap cap is not a problem here Like the money for once as the Chicago Bulls it is not an issue at all And I I I mean one thing that we got to commend AK on is I do think like the way that when he’s made trades you could talk about him not getting draft picks back and things like that And maybe he would have got more draft picks back if he’s willing to take more long-term money But because he did not he’s put this team now in in an amazing cap situation to where they can keep all the guys which we’ll talk about more in the eye on Kobe thing if they choose to do so And as we can see around the NBA that’s not a luxury a lot of teams have anymore There are teams that are losing key players to their rotation just because they can’t afford to even get close to the second tax apron So you know we’ll see how that continues to play going forward I think Giddy I I I at this point I think a nice number between the two between whatever like I think as a base the starting year 7 uh 27.5 million I think that’s a really good place to start with It’ll put him making around 30 by the last year the deal over depending on how many years it is and maybe that’s what they they can negotiate on We’ll see what happens there But overall I still think that you know Giddy’s going to be back here We’ll see But Pat if Josh Giddy does resign here which is likely that’s 15 contracts which that’s the NBA number That’s not bad But 15 fully guaranteed contracts
Yeah
That creates a situation to where you are very limited Now the Bulls are in a situation where I think about half their roster is expiring at the end of the season so they have flexibility in that sense But are you worried about how limiting it could be to have a a roster full of fully guaranteed contracts yet again
Um no I I think that you got a bunch of players who first off if we being honest right Like two of those guys are Don Terry and Julian Yeah GG’s Like take it on the chin You I mean like if you if you really need to open up a roster spot what what is Dalon at one $1.7 million You mean like I
Dan No I think he’s like I think he’s over two
Is he Is he over two now Yeah I mean
$5.3 million for Den Don Terry getting a bet Oh he was a lottery pick
He’s lottery pick
Oh dang it We forgot about that Oh if only it was Walker Kesler Uh but no man I think that uh you know when when you look at moves like that that have been made you know some of the p some of the pieces that you do have at the end of the bench there’s options for you to move on from some of these guys You know what I mean Like it’s not the end of the world if the Bulls want to to create a roster spot Actually don’t think there’s a ton of people out there who I’d be looking to create a roster spot for though Like that was the other thing when the Bulls signed Trey Jones I was like “Okay well we’re not going to be in the market for anybody crazy Maybe there’s a center signing but that probably would end up being a sign and trade situation because you’re not keeping Vo on this roster if you’re signing a center.” So like either way the Bulls have the flexibility to kind of do what they want to do the guaranteed contracts don’t mean that much to me
Yeah I mean with having the expirings that’s the key thing Having so many expirings like that’s that’s what really frees that up if if you want to As far as like the free agents as far as like if you want to sign a free agent center basically everybody’s off the board bro Like
Oh yeah It’s over Yeah I I mean the Lakers uh missed unless you gonna get DeAndre Aiden which half
I mean Mo Vagner’s still out there Al Horford not for us but I’m just saying the center marker Miles Turner Mo Vagner Al Horford That’s probably the best guys that you can get out there Yeah I’d take a Mo Vagner
Oh here I’d absolutely take a Mo Vagner If we can sign Mo Vagner I’ll take him and then like trade what Trade whatever you can get back for VU at that point to the Warriors Like got a couple of seconds Can we get three seconds off you And then I’m okay with that
Three Got a ham sandwich and uh
What type of ham is through the top
If it’s the square ham I don’t want it If it’s square ham I don’t want
I’m not I’m not a square ham guy Listen there’s people out here eating square ham
If y’all still eating squared ham as adults that that have a 401k do better in life
Yeah y’all eating cubed ham
Do better in life Like you can’t be doing the the squared ham slices bro in 2025 and you got a 401k bro Go to the deli Ask them to slice you up some ham bro Act like an adult for once
I didn’t bro First off if you’re not going to the deli you’re missing out anyway Stop buying that pack ham Uh but it’s like literally like you could just walk over there and get it Like it’s not even walk over there like they have the actual like holiday hams that they will slice for you
and it’s not that much more expensive being an adult
Yeah Um I I I do think what’s funny on the Giddy situation and why probably I have no trepidation on you know this getting done is did you did you peep during uh Mark Eversley’s press conference he kind of slipped up So he he got asked the question He was like “Once you sign Josh Giddy you’re going to have 13 you know contracts on the roster with a couple of moves to make You know what are your plans for getting this done?” And D
when he named every player in their core except Denton Terry
Yeah pretty much But but he started it by going “Yeah we’ve got 13 players on the roster.” I was like “Okay so you signing them cuz it was 13 with Giddy.” Now he might have just missed he might have just slipped up but he seemed a little smart He seems a little
Listen I will say this bro And I know I know you we didn’t like what he said but please Mark Eversley just handle the press conferences from now on It’s it was so much better than AK reading off his his paper He like he reads the whole the whole pre-written statement and it’s like “Okay now we have questions and then proceeds not to answer any questions.” At least Mark Everly seemed like he was actually just out there shooting a breeze a little bit Like
I just I I don’t know man It’s it it was too much of a flashback to guard for I was just waiting for him to say you know Paul Zipster who we’re high on I was just I was waiting for it
Who would have been that player Javon Carter who we’re high on
Javon Carter who we’re high on
Javon Carter who we’re high on No What are you doing
Adama Senogo who we’re high on He’s not even on the team anymore
Marco Samotic we plan on bringing back Oh but no it’s just like to me I think that this is a deal that Bulls fans shouldn’t worry about getting done I think in their mind this deal is already done They’re just working out some of the language type stuff uh um to to kind of finish it off But we’ll see what ends up happening in the long run I I think that uh what gets interesting now is with the Trey Jones signing with the eventual Josh Giddy signing could I Kobe be the odd man out That’s what we’re going to be talking about coming up right after this [Music] All right Pat Kobe IO there’s been a lot of talk around the last 24 hours as far as a Josh and may maybe that’s the delay of the Josh Guinea signing I we don’t know but if Josh Giddy does resign there’s a lot of talk that Ior Kobe could be out I think that that’s the wrong move personally at this point in time But how do you feel about the potential one of those guys going out and then with the roster as it stands now since now we do know the roster uh you know of course we wouldn’t know what we’re getting back for either one of those guys in the trade but based off who we have here and assuming Josh Giddy resigns which player do you think makes the most sense to keep here and to move the other one it here’s my thing I I think that Iodumu is a a better player in the long run because I think that he gives you more that you can’t just replace
Mhm
I would probably actually rather see the Bulls keep both of these guys at this point because I think the best Kobe deal you probably screwed up So I don’t want to see you be a day late and a dollar short yet again So at this point just play with Kobe because it’s not like you’re getting a play like you don’t have the opportunity to replace a Kobe White now that you you you passed that opportunity up when you passed up on the draft picks that are available
Well Pat oh here we go I’m going to tell you something that that that popped up recently Now this is not like one of the biggest sources so take it with a grain of salt What if I told you that there was a chance for a Cam Thomas Kobe White swap The the Cam Thomas that just got traded That’s Cam Johnson who got traded Cam Thomas the guard Oh Cam Thomas to Brooklyn Okay Well where where’s the opportunity I guess what is the opportunity Just straight up Now we know AK loves a straight up
AK loves a straight up trade AK loves a straightup trade
but I don’t think it could Well it’s Well it could be because it’s a signing trade because he’s a free agent So that only half of his salary would go towards matching with Kobe White So if he signs 28 $30 million you could do that as a straightup signing trade Here’s the only thing that I would ask Are we sure that Cam Thomas isn’t just the the elite or I don’t even know if I can say elite Do we want a guy who a lot of his scoring now while in the most important quarter does come in the fourth quarter and there’s a lot of inefficiencies leading up to that now maybe we have that with Kobe White which is why I can kind of see the argument to make for it but like with Cam Thomas to me I feel like you end up watching especially when you watch Brooklyn Nets games when he’s actually playing you end up watching him kind of just buy his time not really making shots not really being efficient and he gets hot in the fourth quarter and there’s a lot of buckets
Here’s the thing I I get it that as a catch and shoot player there’s some conversation that he may be a better fit next to Josh Giddy right There’s some there’s some conversation for that But as much as people not Kobe White for a defender I have never seen Cam Thomas play a single defensive
possession in my life I have never seen it I I like I just don’t see what he does defensively Um I I don’t like that but I guess in the Bull sense they’re going younger Three years younger almost but and you you have to pay one of them either way So it’s not like they’re really pay they’re paying him technically a year early Here’s here’s the thing Is it an upgrade over Kobe
No not to me It’s not an upgrade over he’s not the rebounder Kobe is He’s like I said a worse defender than Kobe is and Kobe isn’t already that great of a defender and more turnovers Two and a half turnovers per game to three and a half assists I I’m good on that
Yeah it’s it’s and I think that’s what it comes down to Cam Thomas I think is a is a really good talent I think he needs to get off of the Brooklyn Nets in the worst way and there’s opportunities for him to improve and maybe being with Billy Donovan and coming to this team would help him improve in in that sense but I just I it doesn’t feel like an upgrade to me And I think that’s the thing right When you start to look at some of these deals that are out there yes you can replace Kobe White’s scoring ability but can you replace Kobe White’s Can Cam Thomas replace Kobe White in how efficient he can be Can he replace Kobe White in how much uh of an impact he can have getting to the bucket Like I think there’s so many things that Kobe does I mean they they they kind of around the same size Kobe’s 6’5 he’s 6’4 I guess I don’t know Like I said I I don’t know what the Bulls are cooking it does feel like they are trying to work But to your earlier point too it feels like the best time to move either these guys have passed Like that’s that and that’s the problem with the Bulls again If you were going to move either Kobe or IO which me and you have both said if you’re going to move somebody just make it a good deal It is what it is at this point You’re going to have to move somebody But it feels like like for example you can’t tell me that the Houston Rockets would not have wanted IO Dumu
You can’t tell me that
No for sure You can’t tell me that they wouldn’t have wanted IO Dumu especially signing Dorian Finny Smith for more money You can’t tell me they wouldn’t wanted that But it it seems like once again the Bulls are like they’re trying to do these things at the wrong time You should have done this two weeks ago if that’s what you wanted to do
Well I think I think that’s the big thing though This this isn’t what they want to do They’re they’re Kobe White is going to be on this team Iodum is going to be on this team Josh Giddy is going to be on this team We’re we’re running it with with the essentially the same team that we had at the second half of last season Um I think the structure of it may be a little bit differently I’ I’ve said this you know multiple times I think that Modest Mindset is going to kind of force him uh um into taking over uh even if he wants to or not And I think the Bulls kind of want him to to be more of a focal point of this offense And I think the moves that you’ve seen the Isaac Aoro trade um re bringing back Trey Jones like those are moves that to me speak to we’re trying to accentuate everything else around you so that you can focus on going out there getting buckets and improving defensively
Yeah that’s a fact That’s a fact So we shall see Anything left Pat before we get up out of here

  1. Does this FO really going to tank to get a cornerstone and collect draft capital? Josh is not a player to build around

  2. 6 weeks ago Tre was projected to make between 10-15 million, at 4 years. Furthermore dude never dogs it, or take plays off, on either end of the court. Dude gives max effort, and leaves it all out there on the line. A real ass dog, and Chicagoan!

  3. kuminga is gonna be a great #2 option. we have to get him. but please don’t give up ayo.

giddy, kuminga, ayo, coby, trey jones, and okoro would be awesome.
