The Luke Kornet Signing JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!

You wanted a big, we got a big. Introducing the newest San Antonio Spur, Luke Gornett. What is up, San Antonio Spurs fans? Welcome to TSR Sports. By the way, if you recognize that intro and you pick up on which band that went to, sort of. Well, kudos. Anyways, the Luke Cornet signing last night, you know, I was like, “All right, we got him.” But now that I’ve heard about him, done a little research on him, the signing just keeps getting better. Let’s get into an article from Pounding the Rock talking about Luke and then I’m going to give my two cents about the positives, maybe any negatives and some question marks with our lineups moving into the future. The Spurs got the backup big man they so desperately needed. Luke Cornet will join the join the silver and black on a 4-year $41 million contract. After bouncing around the league, Luke became a key rotation piece in Boston. He was beloved by teammates and trusted by the coaching staff to the point of starting games for one of the best teams in the league. He is a throwback big man. Hey, David. Who uses 7 foot one frame well by scoring inside and crashing the offensive glass, shooting 67% from the field and ranking 31st in the league in offensive rebounds per game despite just playing under 19 minutes a night. He’s a good screener and finisher in the pick and roll. The most exciting part of Cornet’s game is his defense, something that we desperately need off the bench. The big man allowed a field goal percentage of just about 52% when he was the closest defender at the rim and contested just under eight shots in that area per 36 minutes. For comparison, WBY allowed 50% on 8.8 shots contested per 36 minutes. The Spurs are getting a near elite rim protector. That’s Yes. Let me just say it right here. How many times has seen woman go to the bench and then the paint just parted like the Red Seas and everybody had free reign and will to go score at the rim. Especially when Bassie was out. Maybe not. So, well, Bybo was a starting a backup thing. Yeah, it it was rough when Webby came out. Cornet does have his weaknesses. The biggest knock on offense is that he doesn’t space the floor after abandoning the three-point shot early in his career. And I talked about that in a previous video. His first couple seasons, he was taking threes and then and then he just stopped. Luke is a drop big with limited mobility. His hustle and discipline will only get him so far when he’s forced to venture to the perimeter. He’s susceptible to blowbyss and doesn’t always rotate in time to contest closely. Okay. Luke figures to be a key part of the Spurs rotation. Ideally, he’d play 15 to 20 minutes off the bench, most of which would come when Wendy is resting. But there have been rumblings about Wendy wanting to play next to a traditional center. So Lou could start or share the floor with the star big man. In limited sample sizes, the Luke Al Horford and Luke KP units did well on both ends in Boston. Definitely going to talk about that in a few moments. The fit is good and the Spurs addressed a major need. The only questionable aspect of the signing could have been the length of the contract. Luke is about to turn 30 and already has a limited mobility. He’ll be on an affordable salary even at the end of his deal, but as the team gets more expensive, every dollar could count. You guys hear me talk about the CBA all the time. The luxury tax, the the limitations that are put in when you’re over the cap. They are real. Fortunately, the last year is a team option. So, we do have a get out of jail free card. Luke is not an exciting name. His game isn’t flashy. What’s undeniable is that he should be a rockolid backup center that will make guards lives easier with the screening, will protect the paint, and will do all the little things that contribute to winning. That’s what I like to read that last sentence there. contributing to winning. All right, TSR’s rundown, the positives. He’s legit big, 7 foot one, and we got some girth. 250 lbs. He is a legit big. He’s an NBA champion, which means playoff experience. We now have two former NBA champions on our roster, Luke Cornet and let’s not forget Harrison Barnes. Lots of playoff experience between the two of them. It’s going to help our bench so much when it it’s just going to help our bench. I’ve already said previously during the article, the bench, the defense is just I mean, we know some of the guys on the bench. I want to sit here and put out names, but getting a defensive upgrade off the bench is crucial. And he is a young 30 next season. What am I mean by that? He’s been in the league eight years, but because he’s bounced around so much and had limited, I guess we saying limited opportunities, maybe performance based, whatever, he’s only played in 353 games. He’s really hasn’t played a lot of games until his recent success in Boston the last three years. So, he’s I’m going to call him a young 30. He doesn’t have a lot of mileage. Whereas some players going into year year eight or year nine probably have played what over 600 games maybe. And I got say I’ve listened to some Boston sports analysis this morning and everything they’re saying I like. They say it’s a character guy. He’s funny. He’s got apparently a lot of quotes or funny quips and just hearing about him, he seems spursy. That’s a win-win. And I will say this, good for him. He got paid. He got a contract. He’s set for life. He’s probably already set for life on his prior contract. Now he’s really set for life. As far as any negatives, you know, I questioned this last night. Was it a slight overpay? Because there was a little bit of sticker shock. I was like four years for 41 million. I figured he’d more like be a seven to eight million guy. But I will say the Spurs fans, we don’t know what other teams were offering. Other teams could have been offering eight or nine million. The Spurs had to come in at 10 to get the guy they wanted. We may never know the kind, you know, what was going on in the background. So, if that was the market price, then it is what it is. And one thing I want to say as a negative that’s not related to our Spurs, but you got to keep an eye on it. The Rockets and the Hawks just got better. The Rockets of course in our conference they are truly going in on win now with Kevin Durant and then the Hawks getting better is really making those that pick swap and Hawks pick in two years. I just see the values just dropping in front of me. I’m like, “Oh man, the two teams I don’t want to see get better are getting better.” As far as any question marks with Luke, will he shoot threes again? I looked at his wiki page this morning and it says he holds the NCAA record for three-pointers made by a sevenfooter with 150. So, I don’t know if the Spurs will unlock that part of his game. I don’t know if he wants to unlock part of that game. It’s it’s still it’s got to still be there somewhere. You don’t just lose that permanently. So, that’s a big question mark there. Then the other question mark is what happens with their lineups. Me personally, at least not right away, I don’t see the WBY and Luke Twin Towers 2.0, if we want to call them that, I don’t see them together unless the three-point shooting gets so much better. I mean, I could see him out there with Barnes of a Cell, but then the big giant question mark is which point guard, who’s going to run the offense, Fox, Castle, Harper at the time of this video, not necessarily known for the three-point shooting. And yes, the two bigs work with the Celtics having KP and him out there or him and Al, but they have snipers on their team. They could afford to have two bigs to space the floor. We we don’t have that at the moment. And then I’ll finish with this first, fans. We have two, if I’m looking at everything correct, we have two roster spots remaining and we are over the salary cap from everything I’m reading says we’re over the cap, which is going to limit who we can sign. One of you said last night we can sign a player for 5 million. I’m assuming the other player would be for the league minimum 2 million and then that’s it for free agency. I have no idea what they’re going to do. A lot of you said, “Do we have the money to sign Gershan Yabaselli?” All sign points to no. Please let me know in the comments if I’m wrong, but it seems like we’re gonna have to get a guy that’s kind of a a smallest contract, like a minimal contract, maybe like a Biombo if Mamba comes back, you know, those type of contracts, the the low twos. I think we’re going to be very limited on what we can do moving forward, unless you make a trade. Spurs fans, now that we’ve talked about a little bit more, if you weren’t too familiar with Luke Cornet before last night, I I knew who he was, but I certainly didn’t have as much information as I have now this morning. Does the signing just keep getting better for you? Me, it definitely does. Drop a comment down below about everything, how you’re feeling. 1. Luke Kornet was the guy I was hoping for the Spurs to sign in the first place, and we actually did it. Great pickup.

  2. What, at 7,2 he has excellent mobility. We don’t need him to have stretch range, we need spacing from somebody screening then rolling to basket, Luke……

  3. We need to get off Vassells contact ASAP. Hopefully he's traded away in a package before free agency is all wrapped up.

  4. Told you! The Spurs trading #38 meant they had someone else in sight 🙂 Now we know whom that was!

  5. My friend finally people will shut up at yabulse
An undersized big w not great d
Who didnt get 54 at ny

I guarantee you that if we let mamu walk
Ny is signing when hes 3 steps out the door

    Mamu issue is d
So lets 3:43 3:45 get someone at least better then mamu
And yabulse prolly get north of 15 mill

Tsr you gotta stop wanting guys based on stats like that ever translates

    It doesnt
    Let other teams get talent

Lets let the spurs get spur guys

Luke skywalker kornet is a disviplined big whose bball iq is off the charts

The most overrated trait is altheticism

    Need discipline not altheticism

And luke skywalker kornet was a spur before he was with the spurs

  6. 23-24 season he really came into his own and was a solid back up, but last year…. We will never forget 24-25 Luke as a Celtics fan. Was so fun to watch as a pick and roller and he turned into a lob threat (yes Kornet was a lob threat). Then on defense he is a legit rim protector and really accepted the big bruiser center role. Just a physical specimen who will always hype the crowd and team up when they need a spark. We will never forget 23-25 LUUUKKKEEE Kornet.

  7. 41/4 definitely was an overpay. Until you realize that the final year is a team option. Word is also that it's a declining rate as well, which means he'll be paid the most NOW when we have room under the 1st apron to spare and LESS when we start handing out bigger extensions to guys like Fox and Wemby.

That changes the math a lot and causes me to LOVE this signing. Good word Spurs FO.

  8. The only position needing filled now, is a starting PF position… L👀ks like the Giannis articles are going to be running rampant as a potential suitor for the Spurs. They might as well sign BOL on a cheap one year contract, to at least have someone fill that role, because Sochan would be good coming off the bench, & Barnes should be at his original position as a SF, instead of having to play the PF position. I just hate that they didn't make an effort to get Yabusele. 😥

  9. What about Al Horford from Boston? He could be a valuable bench player who has championship experience! I'm not sure how the financials fit! He is close to $10 million a year with a state with state income tax! Maybe he would take the $5 million offer to play on a team that is up and coming!

  10. Happy we finally got a real big to help defensively when Wemby is off the court. BUT the price tag was way too high. I was thinking 2 and 16 and maybe 3/24 at most but 4 and 41 was way too high for someone who is a career 5 points 3 rebounds and less than a block per game. All the more polished centers were signed for less years and cheaper. I just think the Spurs front office over reached on this signing. Wemby is going to to average 32 to 37 minutes a game of 48 minutes that leaves 11 to 16 minutes to Kornet. At 10 mil a pop I hope his production is more than his career averages because Bassey and Biyombo gave us those numbers on a lot cheaper deals. I give them a B- on this deal with big of expectations of Luke Kornet given the salary. GO, SPURS, GO!!!

  11. May the Force be with Luke.
And Wemby is a Star Wars fan so this is clearly a fit.
Maybe it is the one reason they signed him.
    I think it is.
    Make sense.

  12. OMG people!!!! Wemby has said time and time that he doesn't want to play the 5!!!! Hello!!! Kornet should start next to wemby. Now they need another big or lengthy player for a backup.. wemby is humble and trust what the Spurs are doing but if they don't get the him playing 5 out of their heads he will bounce. Spurs have a couple of years after next to change their ego .

  13. considering Jokob Poeltl just signed for 26 mil for 4 years, Luke Kornet signing seems reasonable to me.

  14. I'm not sure why everyone is so excited. Spurs overpaid for a back up center. There were better choices out there. Frenchman GY from Philly and Brooks Lopez were better choices and both signed for less money and shorter contracts. They still have a lot of draft picks to use and you want flexibility going forward; not long term contracts excpet for essential players. As a fan, I do hope I eat my words on Kornet.

  15. Based on who Spurs got in free agency, the players don't see them as a team that can make a deep playoff run. Hopefully that changes in the next 2 years.

  16. WISH Spurs had reversed this: signing Yabusele for the big money contract, and saving the small change for a backup center. I know Kornet is gonna be helpful, but the Wemby lineups just don't work, right now, without a rebounding 4 who can shoot 3s (sorry Sochan). And as nice as it is to let Wemby go to the bench without inviting layups, the lineups WITH him have to take priority for Spurs to advance. No chance we get a solid stretch 4 for small change; so, it's trade time I guess. Hope it happens over the summer.

  17. Mamu signed with Toronto for 2Y – 5.5M
I'll miss him… But again I understand, I'm sure the coach will respect him more than Mitch and really give him playing time he deserve…

  18. Luke a Spur, Mamu (unfortunately) no longer a Spur. SA is certainly better at the 5, but still not a position of any depth.

  19. Now, get the dancing bear or another solid back up big. The rockets had great success running too big and historically the spurs are the poster child of the NBA for two big lineups.

One more rotation, quality, big, and everybody else should be a shooter.

  20. Your intro is from KISS. Use to love them growing up. My dad would play them and pink floyd everyday when he was taking me to school

  21. In a french interview, Guershon told that he had been very frustrated by the Sixers' experience after making the Euroleague finals three years in a row with Real Madrid, and that he would choose his next team amongst the contenders' teams.
The Yabusélé's decision definitely makes sense as the Knicks are now the favorites of the eastern conference (along with the Cavs). Despite having a great future, the Spurs are definitely not a contender yet (too many rookies, sophomores,…).
But I definitely think that the Spurs should have been amongst the last two/three teams to discuss with his agents.

This is definitely a big loss for the Spurs because the fit with Wemby is obvious and, thanks to his playoff experience, Yabu would have brought the team at another level.

The number of interesting free agents is now very low. Boucher, Nance Jr, Bol bol, Vukcevic, Houstan could be some good adds with the remaining of the MLE (4M$ next year at max).

  22. Update: Seem like Dylan Harper wont be playing in the California Classic Summer League because of a Groin Injury. Spurs are hopeful he will make his summer league debut in the Los Vegas summer league on July 10 vs the 76ers.

  23. I guess I’m the only spurs fan who thinks this is not a good pick. 40 million for a guy who only plays defense 1ft from the rim
    and sets hood screens 😂
Luke is overrated and overpaid now 😂

  24. I just think that Yabusele is better. Period end of story. He almost beat the United States Olympic team single-handedly! If you put this guy on that French team what would’ve happened? I’m starting to doubt spurs management. Don’t piss off Wembanyama.

  25. Hi Rich and TSR family! I hope all is well! Another home run signing for our San Antonio Spurs! Our MATFO are doing a highly commendable job! The fit of Kornet to our spurs is phenomenal! In top of the game he will bring in, he is also an amazing locker room player, playoff experience and leadership! A taller version of our beloved Patty Mills! Bring on 2025-2026! GSG!
