Duncan Robinson Gone From Miami Heat , In Sign and Trade w/ Pistons For Simone Fontecchio
Welcome on in guys. Tobin here with you and thanks for checking out the channel. I hope you’re doing well out there. Got the news. New news dropped uh mere 20 minutes ago, little after 6:00. I’m doing this a little before 6:30. And uh it’s official. Duncan Robinson has been signed by the Detroit Pistons signing trade. Duncan Robinson gets himself a three-year $48 million contract. Congratulations to him. Happy for Duncan. Gets his gets uh some more money. And uh the Heat in return are going to get Simone Fonteio forward from the Detroit Pistons. Had a real uh unimpressive season last year and uh he is now on your Miami Heat and uh that is you know I wasn’t expecting a big return in a signing trade for Duncan Robinson. final year of Fentio’s dear he deal. He makes 8.3 million this year. But uh the big story here, of course, more so than that is it’s the end of an era. It is the end of an era. The the all-time leading three-point shooter in Miami Heat history, his uh incredible story, incredible run comes to an end uh after seven incredible seasons with the Miami Heat. Duncan Robinson, the news breaking today, uh Shamserani, the first one that uh I saw break the story, but it had felt today that uh a lot of momentum was building towards this that uh that he was that that he was going to move on elsewhere. Uh saw a lot of reports coming out from the uh from the the local guys, saw Anthony with a report, Ethan with report that it was starting to build toward this. We talked about this, I think on on Sunday night when he officially made his decision. My first read on it was I didn’t think he was coming back. I know there was a lot of, “Oh, you know, he could come back on a deal. He could come.” Dude, I I I I could smell an end of a of a relationship a mile away. And to me, I felt like this was one that was coming to an end, you know, based on where the Heat are going, based on where Duncan’s going, based on the way last year ended, which I thought was a bit of a slap in the face to Duncan Robinson. Um, I just felt like he was probably looking for a fresh start. And then not only that, you know, got a very, very hefty payday, which good for him. He deserves it. He bet on himself. um you know, the Miami Heat, he had a final year of $20 million, but you know, at the at the only thing that was guaranteed was 10. And you know, this is still a guy who’s essentially in the prime of his career, and now he’s getting 16 a year. You know, I think from my standpoint, I was like, yeah, that I thought Duncan Robinson getting anywhere from 10 to 12 was like an easy bet. I’m like, he’s going to at least double that. Why would he stay? Why would he, you know, why wouldn’t he test the market? That that feels with his skill set, that feels patently obvious. Then you add on top of it, of course, Detroit was in this position with Malik Beasley, and this is essentially, I think, even more than what Malik Beasley was was rumored to get. And uh so Duncan Robinson gets to go to a very uh fine upand cominging Pistons team. And I told you like I think from his standpoint, I’m sure Duncan Robinson is always going to respect and appreciate what the Miami Heat did for him, taking a chance on him, building him up. It was a beautiful journey. And if you have anything negative to say about it, he was overpaid. I get that, dude. We went through that whole journey. But that’s the thing about Duncan Robinson that you can appreciate is that it was a roller coaster journey. The guy went from unknown from gyms that we never heard of to to to Michigan. Then comes back, he has to prove himself in Sou Falls. Then he has to prove himself at the summer league. Then he has to prove himself uh you know in in a season where dude I remember his last year D. Wade’s last year with Duncan Robbins. the dude couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn and then turns himself, you know, into a starter on a finals team and yes, went through, you know, many trials and tribulations as far as like, you know, mental streaks and all that stuff and was very open about this, was just always a guy who was very candid about this stuff. Um, and you know, to see this come to an end, it’s just if you’re not sad about it, you don’t feel some type of way about it. I guess I I don’t know what to tell you. I I don’t sad to kill a sip. I don’t know because, you know, from my mind, Duncan Robinson uh is is always about the right stuff. And it’s funny, I’m like looking at my archives here on Twitter of like all my Duncan Robinson material and the thing that I think about with him that I’m going to really miss, you know, I just did uh I was just, you know, talking about the the Damen Lillard saga and all that, but it’s going to be hard and weird to go to a Heat game now and watch Bam Adabio warm up without Duncan Robinson. Like those two, their chemistry together and the way they came up together is just such a cool thing because I really feel like Bam Adabio and Duncan Robinson could be blindfolded and pull off a dribble handoff or a give and go and they would just be in the right place for each other because they just had that kind of rapport on a basketball court. It was a beautiful thing to see and and really one of the things that I think made the Heat, you know, special on their comeup and yeah, I guess at some points like other things had to be figured out and whatnot, but I just always love that. And the thing that was always great about them is like they could always just rip into that no matter what, but the thing that was always cool about is they always, you know, in in in the heat normally you warm up as a pair. you wear you warm as duo unless like you get there super early like Kyle Lowry used to warm up by himself super early but most of the time you know guys they warm up as a duo and but those guys always did and we’re talking years upon years together and it’s always was a funny thing I’ll tell you uh you know Bam does this thing when he gets there where he does like this this drill I would always say like Duncan gets out there a little bit earlier and starts warming up with Chris Quinn and Malik Allen the Heat’s uh big man coach and assistant coach and and gets Bam ready. Bam does this hands drill where he’s basically under the rim and he’s basically likeoop, you know, like trying to like gets the ball, throws it up, but you can’t shoot threes while that’s going on. And so Duncan Robinson basically has to like sit there and either wait for him and sometimes it would be a funny thing where like they would playfully like Dunkers would be like you don’t get to start your drill until I miss and sometimes Duncan Robinson would just get on a tear and he would never miss and so Bam would have to sit there and wait. Um and then when he wouldn’t, you know, Chris Quinn and him would be fun with their their reachins and doing some defensive drills and things like that. But I I I just think about that and I think about these guys and how well they work together and to think that that’s not going to be there anymore uh is a little bit weird and it’s a little bit sad. Um and and and I think in these moments and I think when you’re reflecting on a guy’s career and his journey, you guys could hit here and be like couldn’t be in the repeater tax and couldn’t be whatever, dude. I get that. Okay. Hey, for the basketball purposes, uh understood. Fine. I understand why. But I also think that you know bad I think for both sides probably we’re at a point like hey this this journey has reached its finish line and it was a beautiful thing but it also it is a little it is a little sad to see it get to this point and I’m happy for Duncan going to Detroit. I am terrified for what he’s going to do when he faces Eric Spolstra. I feel like this is going to be him flamethrowing in at least six threes every time that he faces him. That’s just me. Um, and you know, to to to see this one uh to see this one end is uh is is a bit of a bummer. I don’t have a ton of thoughts on Fontekio right now to be honest with you. Like, you know, it’s it’s not one of these where like, hey, they had to make the move and uh this is what they got back. Didn’t even get a pick back. So, yeah, I’m bummed about I but I’m more like, hey, the end of the road here. I again, I’m not surprised that it is. This was my first inclination once the uh once the decision came that he was opting out. I was like, “Well, this guy’s no dummy.” Like, Dunan Robinson is not stupid. He’s not opting out if he doesn’t think he’s got a chance to get that money back and then some. And he did. And he did. Um but you know, and then from the Heat’s perspective, yeah, I do get it. I I again, it’s not like it’s not like his role was going to grow here. You know, I do feel like the Heat are starting to lean younger. It feels that way. I I think that based on everything the Heat are trying to do, this is their first official move, which, you know, it’s more of a subtraction than it is a addition from them. But it feels like hey based on the reports that they’re trying to deal Wiggins getting Roier out like they’re going to go and lean younger. That’s I mean probably outside of like Kevin Love they’re going to try and do that. And look there is a part of me that’s like okay I’m glad that that’s what we’re going to lean into. We’re going to lean into you got your pick this year. You don’t feel like the move is out there to go by. you don’t have a Trey Young or a Jiannis at Santa Tumbo that you feel pressured to figure out whether or not they’re a cornerstone or not. Uh you’re going to have to come to that pressure to figure out what you’re going to do with Tyler Herro either in October or by the end of this year. You’re going to face that pressure. Um but but um you know with with drafting Yakonis with you paying DaVon Mitchell with I think them going to try and revitalize Haimemehake Jr. with for right now with with Wigan still on the team, Yoic being your sixth man, where are the minutes for Duncan Robinson, right? Like I know everybody says uh I not everybody I know the counter to this is the Heat don’t have enough elite shooters. And while yes, that is very much true, uh, that Duncan Robinson is their best shooter outside of Tyler Herro, uh, they they that they don’t have, you know, the ignitable flamethrower that can get hot. That’s certainly not that they don’t have that type on their team right now. Um, you know, I I think this is one of those where like but but is this are there is there going to be enough of them really trusting that to keep Duncan Robinson uh to to you know have Well, let’s put it like this. Would any Heat fan look at where they are right now and think paying Duncan Robinson now 16 mil a year would have been prudent. And I would say yeah probably not. Probably not. If they would have gone one more year and it would have been expiring and then you figure things out. I think Heat fans would have been cool with that because you know Duncan get getting to see the end of the race. But would you have signed up to pay him this kind? Yeah, I would say probably most Heat fans are not at the crossroads that they’re at right now. That’s just, you know, they’re they’re just in this they’re in this weird no man’s land, but it does feel more like, all right, while I don’t think the Heat are tanking, and I don’t think that they’re rebuilding. It does start to feel like the vision more is we’re going to lean into our young guys. We’re going to see what we got here and then, you know, let’s see if these guys have an awesome Let’s I think essentially the Heat are going to try and pull a Houston Rockets. Now, is anybody are they going to be as good as the Houston Rockets? I don’t know. Uh but I think that that’s kind of what they’re going to do is they’re going to say like, “Hey, can we give all of our core pieces here or something? Can there be something here? Can Spo take what he’s had here?” Because I think, you know, Spo with last year being as bad as it was, I mean, Spose had less talented rosters and done better than he did last year. And, you know, can they jolt up Haime Hakez to either the player that he should be or juice his value back up? Can they figure out if Tyler Herro is a cornerstone or figure out if it’s time to part ways? Can they figure out if Bamio is worth what he is or is it time for him to move on to another team? Is Nicole Yoic gonna be worthy of an extension or so? That’s what it feels like the Heat are leaning into is figuring this thing out. Did they actually have a gem fall of them in Yakonas? Did that that is what it feels. It’s not exciting. It’s not sexy um at all, but I don’t think the Heat have any grand illusions that they’re going to be actual contenders unless there’s just like some real surprise that happens here. And in fact, even if they aren’t that good, they have their own pick and then they’ll dance with, “All right, let’s let’s get into to to fixing the issues for real.” But it actually does feel to me like they’re starting to lean more towards we’re going young and Duncan Robinson’s on the other side of 30 and and that’s it’s it’s it’s sad that it’s come to this end, but that’s where it it it feels like it’s it’s starting to go for Miami. um Damen Lillard talk aside, you know, if if they can get Damen Lillard on the Cheepskis and they think that there’s something to mine there that’s worth a roster spot. Okay, I don’t even know if Damen Lillard’s going to want to be here. But all in all, uh man, Duncan Robinson, what a freaking journey. What a what a job to to go from where he was to become the most prolific shooter in Miami Heat history. even though I made Glenn Rice very mad when I said that. Uh cuz Glenn Rice think you know Michigan Wolverine Heat legend uh says, “I can’t believe that even came out of your mouth.” But it is the facts. I can’t deny with what the leaderboard is even if Tyler Hero is going to pass him uh you know eventually. It’s the truth and you know for for him to to turn himself and what he turned himself into is uh is a really really awesome story. And I’ll always be a fan of Duncan Robinson. Um I’m fearful for what he’s going to do with Detroit with Kate Cunningham and uh with that team because you know they passed on they got rid of Tim Hardaway. I don’t know what’s happening with Malik Beasley but he’s going to fit right in there. He’s an experienced guy. Uh gets to go back to Michigan. I think it’s a cool ending spot for him. I think it’s a cool ending spot for him and um it’s going to be hard not to root for that guy. It’s going to be hard not to root for him. Uh even when he’s playing the Miami Heat. So, I hope he gets a rousing ovation the next time Detroit comes to town. Um, I know the Heat don’t do uh video tributes or whatever. That’s not like their big thing for guys who haven’t won the title, even though they did for Jimmy or guys who haven’t won Ben. Also, I I feel like Duncan Robinson’s worthy of a video tribute. I feel like that guy um I feel like he is. I I feel like that that’s that’s just something that everybody can get behind. He’s just just uh just deserving of something like that. Um, so end of an era, man. End of an era. End of the Duncan Robinson era. And uh we’ll see where the rest of this offseason goes.

Fontecchio is a really good player, 2 way player, like a Duncan 2.0 with less efficiency from the 3.
I am fucking sad.
I wanted him to be a Heat lifer. It’s a sad day 😢
So sad he was our best shooter but he gets his money elsewhere. Ewwww I guess we get cap space is the only upside. Now where are we getting our floor spacing and three point shooting from? They better sign Burks on the min.
From the bottom of my drunken fckn heart we love you Duncan, you were the fckn man and are literally the greatest shooter in Miami heat history. Maybe a change of scenery will be good for you helping you remember you are literally in the top 5 baddest mother loving shooters in the league period. Much love big dunc!
Sad to hear my boy Duncan is gone. But I hope he gets everything he wants
Duncan had some good games but was too soft, poor defense, inconsistent and overpaid. So good luck to him elsewhere. No idea why we got whatever his name is back on a trade ?????
At least he gets to eat better pizza
“Bye…..bye……bye……..” – Diego from Blow
This one hurts.
FOR WHO?!!
😢
Love Duncan at some point spo did not play him like he should’ve glad he got paid 💯
Pat Riley failed goran, jimmy,Duncan and pretty soon bam and herro
Much love to Duncan but it was time for both parties to move on.
You’re a real one for this!
Honestly… it was time for Duncan to move on.. game after game you watch him and he is a great three point shooter… but he is NOT a great CLUTCH three point shooter. Can't tell you how many times I watched games where he could have won the game and he missed the shot. Doesn't matter how many shots he made up to that point he is not a clutch three-point shooter and I love Duncan Robinson I'm just telling the truth.
The Heat have really gone down the shitter.
Yep this always happens nw watch hw he shines in Detroit 😮
I think it is fine Duncan is leaving. Spo messed with his head too much. However, we should have gotten more back.
Duncan will be missed. Spo did him dirty last year
Duncan donuts we will miss you 🤧
I love drob sad to see him go, undrafted to 100ms contact earnings after this with another 100 to come maybe not bad for putting a ball through a basket
THANK YOU DUNCAN ROBINSON MAKE THAT MONEY HOMIE
Shoulda just paid drob
Detroit basketball!!! ❤💙🔥🔥🔥
Will miss Duncan. Will forever remember that baseline move 🙂 hope the heat show him crazy love when he plays in Miami again.
