BREAKING: Celtics Sign Josh Minott to Two-Year Contract

All right, the Celtics have signed Josh Manat to a two-year contract. Uh Shams Trannia just broke the news. Two years, $5 million deal. Second Timberwolf the Celtics, excuse me, have signed in the past 24 hours. Got Luca Garz on the first night of free agency. Followed it up with Josh Manat. I’ll share my screen here. Apologies, I’m on my laptop so things might get a little funky. But uh 6’8 forward, spent the past three years of his career, the first and only three years of his career I should say, with the Timberwolves, 22 years old. uh 6’8, hasn’t played much for the Wolves this last year, was the most he’s played since entering the league. He played in 46 games. Um averaged 2.6 points uh point8 uh or 1.0 rebounds, point4 assists. Long armed defender from what I remember of him coming out of the draft. Hasn’t really played much. I can check out the G-League stats, too, because I think that’s where he spent, excuse me, most of his time um in the league so far. Played in eight G-League games in the 23 24 season. uh 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, uh a steal and almost a block and a half a game. Played in the G- League, the 22 23 season as well. Um this is the regular season though, so let me do full season, so it includes the cup. Uh his rookie season, 20 G-League games, uh 19 points, eight rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 blocks. From what I remember, not a great offensive player, but a pretty good shooter. um another guy who can presumably fill some of the gaps left behind by um Jason Tatum minutes. It is a bit weird because Josh Man’s a wingforward, not really a big man and that’s kind of what the Celtics need right now. Um does make you wonder if this is just a let’s take a chance on a guy. The Timberwolves just waved him um this past week as they have been restructuring their roster. So I I’ll pull up a little highlights video so you guys can get a gist of what Josh Man brings to the table. We’ll watch it together. Um, but young guy, 22, take a flyer on a guy during what is shaping up to be a gap season um, for the Celtics and then see what you got from there. Apologies if the uh, video is a little choppy. Again, I am on my laptop today. So, um, it could look a little funky, but here we go. Josh Manat. Um, most of the high I mean, you can get some Luca Cars highlights in here as well, I suppose. Um, you see him here running the floor, dunk in transition, long arms. I would need to check what his com at the combine. You see the clothes out there and Tan Salon uh running the floor a little bit in transition as well. Um, it’s weird, right? Cuz the Celtics need a big. We know they need a big, but this is very much a let’s fill the rotation with guys. This this almost makes me wonder like what is this leave Jordan Walsh? That’s a crazy dunk by Josh Man. Um, where does this leave Jordan Walsh? Menot and Walsh are pretty similar players. Where does this leave Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Shyman, Sam Hower? Like, does I I don’t want to sit here speculating like, oh my god, what does this mean for trades for the rest of the roster? But does this mean a Hower trade is maybe going to happen? Does this mean they’re not going to believe in Walsh? Like, what is this just purely let’s get another young body who we think could turn into something? I I would probably lean there. I would assume this is the Celtics just throwing darts on a dart board and see seeing if anything can stick because I I don’t think Josh Man is going to be the deciding factor of whether or not they trade someone. But it’s certainly an interesting signing. Um freak athlete. I mean, we’ve seen like three dunk highlights. All of his highlights offensively have been passes or dunks so far. So, you get a little bit of a gist of what he can be. But a very raw player still despite spending a few years in the league. So far, the shot has never been there. Um, I don’t even think we’ve seen a jump shot highlight um, thus far in the the tape we’ve seen from this reel here. Um, I mean, he can finish at the rim. He can drive, put the ball on the floor a little bit. This screams to me like project player. I don’t think they’ll put him in Maine. He didn’t spend any time in the G- League this past year, so I don’t think the Celtics are going to send him back. I don’t know if that’s even a thing. Okay, one second. Let me let me get to the YouTube. Let me I just I need to see the jump shot again. Man, that was a sight. Wow. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. So, great. Cool dunk. Super cool dunk. I I’m sorry. I need to watch the jump shot again. I I don’t want to say OSHA brassette. Well, give me one more time. I just Okay. Okay. Work. Excuse me. Work to be done with the jump shot. work to be done with the jump shot for Josh Manat. Um, if I remember correctly, I’m going to double check before I say, actually, he was Okay, no, he played at Memphis. I thought he was a G-League Ignite guy, but he played at Memphis. Played college ball. What did he shoot in college? Um, I think he only spent one year in college if I’m correct. Let me look. Yeah, one year in college. Shot did not shoot the ball in college. 4.8 8 um field goal attempts per game, point 43 threes per game, 14%. Not a shooter. Maybe the vision is we turn him into a Josh or Robert Williams Josh Hart build who’s just going to play great defense and rebound. Listen, I I said this in the Hugo, excuse me, the Ugo Gonzalez video. There’s no H. you don’t pronounce H. We learned that today. I said this in the U Gonzalez video. Three-point shooting isn’t everything. It’s not everything. But if you’re not going to be a good three-point shooter, you need to be a freak defender. You need to be a good screener, good cutter, good like intangibles player. I I don’t know how much of that Josh Bat brings to the table. I worry he falls under the umbrella of super athletic guy who’s not going to really translate well. So that that’s my biggest concern. Um, I do wonder if they can turn him into like a let him play free safety guy. Let him sort of just run the floor, play free defense. He’s a pretty good passer. I mean, we’ve seen a few passing highlights here, so that’s a good sign. I wonder if you can play him as a small ball five, really small ball five. He’s not going to guard bigs, right? He’s not going to guard being down low with any of these guys, but if you can play him off the ball and then trust like I don’t know, like more more offensively is what I’m talking about. If he can if he can run the pick and roll, go to the rim, he can probably finish lobs. And I mean, he can pass out of the short roll really well. Maybe that’s the vision. Maybe it’s a let’s play him as a small ball five offensively and then defensively we can just stick him on the best winger forward and figure it out from there, right? Because he can cut pretty well. He’s clearly athletic. He’s a good defender. He’s a very good defender. He’s always been a good defender. That three-point shot is not pretty, man. Um man and and and it’s not even pretty you’re like to the point of like oh they can fix it. It it just looks bad. M maybe that’s the vision though. Maybe it’s a let’s play him as a small ball you know four five guard forwards defensively play free safety roam over get blocks defensively and then offensively we just play him a lot in the dunker spot. Teach him the it didn’t look as bad from that side. One sec. Let’s see. It’s not great. It’s not great. But maybe like you play him as like let’s let’s have him. It’s like it’s hitchy. Play him in the dunker spot. Let him roam. Let him cut off the ball. But then like you already have Jordan Walsh. You already have Hugo Gonzalez or Ugo Gonzalez. Freak athlete though, man. Maybe you play him as a semi- big man though. I I understand why you take the upside swing, right? I get it 100%. especially in this year where the Celtics are looking pretty rough. Great defender. He just shut down that pick and roll. Great screen navigation. I I I I see and understand why the Celtics would take a chance on this. He’s a good passer. He’s a He’s a good passer out of the role as well. He’s a freak athlete. He’s great defender on and off the ball it seems like. Um good rebound, good put back. May maybe you ignore the shot. Maybe you use him as a small ball center and you just have another big on the floor. This is you’re like double big, but we’re going to play forward as a big. I I like the defense a lot. The defense is really good. That shot just concerned me. I just saw that and I was like, “Wow.” Um, I get it. You take the upside swing. The defense is so good. He’s very clearly a good defender. Really underrated passer from just the small highlights. I mean, I mean, like obviously there are highlights, but just the ability to make those reads is not something you’ll see um even in a highlight tape if a guy’s not an adept passer. So, defense is there, passing is there. If he can screen and he can like understand how to navigate the younger spots, I get it. I get it as an upside swing for Boston.
