what’s going on in the Mile High City malikica we have a major trade for Nicole Yokic’s Denver Nuggets michael Porter Jr is being sent to the Brooklyn Nets along with an unprotected 2032 first round pick for Cam Johnson help that is the one word that has been synonymous with the Denver Nuggets over the last 2 years and more specifically getting the three-time MVP and one of the greatest players in NBA history the right amount of help to win a championship cuz that’s exactly what Denver should have a chance at doing every single year of Nicola Joic’s career well guys the Denver Nuggets just did it because one day into free agency and they are now a serious serious championship contender trading Michael Porter Jr for Cam Johnson and if you thought that wasn’t enough to help them improve they brought back a Denver legend they brought back someone who helped them win their only championship as a sixth starter a guy who delivered all throughout the regular season and the playoffs and secured himself as a cult legend oh and they got him for a vet minimum the same Bruce Brown that got signed to a 2-year $40 million contract just two years ago by the Indiana Pacers is back in Denver on a vet minimum and he’s got a chance to get himself another payday after another year playing alongside Nicola Joic and after another year of winning a championship but before we talk about Bruce Brown Cam Johnson this right here is the move this is the shakeup that Denver needed to put themselves back at the top of the Western Conference to put themselves back in the conversations with OKC and I saw people suggesting Cam Johnson isn’t an upgrade on MPJ offensively and if you were to just look at the regular season numbers sure I could see how you might think that until you realize one of those guys played alongside Ben Simmons and Dron Sharp and the other guy was playing alongside the threetime MVP and whilst MPJ is a great shooter and overall he was a very good player for the Nuggets helping them win a championship helping them win different playoff serieses this is a guy who was overpaid but despite his injuries consistently played a lot more than people actually think when you look at the numbers and consistently delivered in the regular season and in the playoffs until the last couple of years until the series against OKC where yes he was injured but you saw his weaknesses come to the four you saw his inability to put the ball on the floor his inability to have counters when defenses ran him off the three-point line his lack of playmaking his average defense just all of these factors that work in the perfect environment but against a physical and great defense like OKC or Minnesota last year when he was healthy you saw him really struggle that is where Cam Johnson is going to make a difference with him being a better ball handler a better self-creator a better three-level scorer and oh is he a much much better playmaker and this is going to be so crucial in the playoffs if the shot isn’t falling this was the problem with MPJ when his shot wasn’t falling there was literally nothing else he was bringing aside from maybe a little bit of size but he’s not exactly an elite defender it’s the reason the Nuggets closed several playoff games with Bruce Brown instead of him just two years ago during their championship run well as much as I love Bruce they likely won’t be needing him to close games instead of Cam Johnson cuz he’s just got so much to his game i mean just look at him here against Aaron Gordon on an island he goes hard to his right and then the between the legs dribble into a contested 28T3 and it is money nuggets fans that is what you are getting look at it soak it in absorb it bask in it bask in the beauty of Cam Johnson’s step back jumper that you are going to see all season long alongside Nicola Joic or how about this play against Denver again where he blows past Murray bumps into the chest of Joic and whilst falling down the floater just so much more comfortable putting the ball on the floor so much more comfortable getting to any spot on the floor within the mid-range from three-point range at the rim this is a guy that has counters and this also extends to his playmaking if you think the scoring between him and MPJ is similar sure I’ll give you that i think Cam is more versatile which will help a lot more in the playoffs but it’s not going to be the biggest biggest upgrade his playmaking however I cannot stress the absolute difference just look at him here bringing the ball up in transition sharp sets the screen for him and with Bryant up at the level look at the pass over the top of the defense in shride to Sharp for the dunk or how about this time he gives it up to Claxton gets the hand off and just look at the weight of pass that’s the kind of pass you’re going to be throwing to Nicolic just throw it up in the air and let him catch it out of the sky we know he’s got that 45in vertical cam Johnson will find him over the top of Porzingis it doesn’t matter that’s what Cam Johnson can do okay maybe Joic won’t be catching those kind of lobs but he can also make those kind of passes on the floor as well just like here where he gets the hand off from Simmons and look at him probe against the defense forcing Jiren to commit and once Jiren commits he wraps a perfect pass around to Simmons for the layup if he can get Ben Simmons buckets I mean you can figure out the rest for yourself and he can also penetrate and find open shooters this is not just someone who runs pick and rolls or who can find his bigs if the defense closes out on him aggressively from the three-point line he can put the ball on the floor and to not just get to the rim but also make plays to find open shooters like I said the name of the game when it comes to Cam Johnson and the upgrade is verse aility not to mention how seamless of a fit this will be for Cam brooklyn were already a team that love to run handoffs and actions through their bigs having Dron Sharp and Nick Claxton stand at the top of the key of the three-point line and let Cam come off those handoffs and then create let’s just replace Dron Sharp with Nicolai Joic and let’s see if he goes from a very good player to the greatest player of all time that’s the expectations for Cam Johnson what is stopping him from becoming Michael Jordan what is stopping him that’s all I’m saying but on a serious note just this extra level of playmaking this extra level of creation that Cam brings you could be massive in one major aspect the nonic minutes you can pick between having Jamal Murray in Jokic run lineups and then Cam Johnson and Aaron Gordon or you can have Cam Johnson and Nicola Joic with Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon but now you will have one guy who can put the ball on the floor and create consistently you don’t have to stress as much about those non Joic minutes because Cam Johnson can do what he does without Joic on the floor and this is without mentioning Bruce Brown bruce Brown is back in Denver and if you’re a Denver fan I don’t need to tell you what Bruce brings but in case you forgot the defense the cutting the playmaking the hustle the energy everything you got from Russell Westbrook last year well Bruce Brown is just a younger version of that and more importantly with all due respect to Russ who was great for Denver the shooting we saw it in the OKC series where you had Peyton Watson you had Russell Westbrook you had Michael Porter Jr struggling Christian Brown okc were allowed to just absolutely help off everyone and collapse the paint against Nicola Joic it happened against Minnesota as well bruce Brown isn’t exactly Cam Johnson from three-point range if you get my drift but he is a guy that we saw in the playoffs make teams pay for helping off Nicola Joic we saw him hit big shots and like I said he’s not the best shooter ever so you can’t expect him to be knocking down every single shot but he is a guy that you have confidence when he is left open he is going to make them pay more often than not and more importantly just the way he fits his unique skill set as a roller despite being a point guard as someone who can cut hard and to the rim his transition scoring you now have Bruce and Christian Brown who both provide similar aspects with that physicality and that strength as a guard and hopefully both of them knocking down enough three-point shots to keep the defense honest not only are they similar in namesake but they also very similar in play style and you are going to have Bruce bringing some of that intensity on both ends of the floor when Christian Brown isn’t on the floor all I can say is the Denver Nuggets are absolutely cooking and they still have a mid-level exception to spend as well which they’ve probably spent by the time this video is up but regardless the Nuggets wow they got him
