Tre Johnson reflects on basketball journey that has brought him to Wizards

chase is here with Wizards first round pick Trey Johnson and Trey why don’t we start with a simple question could you describe your basketball journey for me uh I feel like the best way to describe is a lot of ups and downs and I feel like what made me better over the course of time was that I enjoyed being in a down more than an up and kind of staying even focused so especially I find more s not more success but more areas of improvement when I’m going through a slump or going through a down I would say
and when do you feel like you started to really put yourself on the map
uh I probably say around high school time like when I got into high school just during that co time I used it as a gap filler to become better or get better overall and my mindset kind of changed during co so I feel like during high school that was around the time
now I’m a numbers guy so I was looking at your three-point shooting it’s not just the overall percentage you were lethal from NBA three-point range half court transition off the catch off the dribble how does a guy become such a complete shooter at just 19 years old uh
I just feel like it was the work that I put in with the gas and the managers at Texas especially just knowing where my shots would come from knowing that I’d be able to get some good looks in transition so it was kind of the reps that I worked out I worked on the most so I feel like that’s what really where it came from and then just being consistent with and doing the same thing over and over now I’ve covered a lot of NBA rookies a lot of them say that that three-point line in the NBA is a bit of an adjustment but you’re already really good from that area is that something you’ve practiced for a long time
uh in high school I was for sure shooting from that line just because it was there and just because I always wanted to work on my range and even when you’re growing up nobody really guards you with the heels on the three-point line so you got to be have some type of range a little bit so I was always since high school just shooting a little deeper I would say now on draft night you said something that really stood out to me about how you train so often with your dad and he was such a big motivator for you that you can sort of hear his voice even when you’re practicing in an empty gym so can you expand on that like what was the training regimen like between you and your dad who obviously played college basketball how young were you when it started were these early mornings what type of training did you guys go through together uh I don’t remember how early I was but I remember we used to always just go up to the gym and get up shots even when I was a little kid he used to let the goal down at the uh rec the rec center and I just still be working out on the on the lower goal that he let down but yeah it’s been like a long time just to consistent work over several years I would say now this isn’t the first time we’ve met i talked to you at the NBA draft combine and I interviewed you and it’s funny over the past few days that interview has gone viral and of course it was you talking about how you’re all basketball you don’t really have any hobbies or offc court interest so what’s your reaction to that video going viral and where does that come from where does that focus on basketball come from
i don’t know it’s just me wanting to be better be the best I can be at my job I would say and that interview is kind of funny but it’s also true to a point though it also is true because I am all about basketball mostly but I’m still trying to expand especially being in DC i have stuff to go actually do like look at museums and stuff like that different monuments so I feel like I will have more hobbies especially being down here
now what you said at the combine Wizards fans love to hear that right cuz you’re serious they want you to be a great basketball player but what can you give them cuz they want to know more about you off the court so what kind of guy is Trey Johnson
i’m a laidback relaxed type of guy whatever I say whatever the situation needs I would say I could do but more than likely I’m really just laidback more observant than anything
video games someone asked me like “Does he at least play video games?” NBA players love playing video games i
actually don’t play video games there you go more time for basketball um we saw the uh phone call you had with Bub Carrington on draft night you guys are the future backcourt for the Washington Wizards uh how does that sound to you and what’s your relationship like with him uh we’re most definitely trying to grow in a grow a relationship but I feel like being a young back court also with with veterans on the team I feel like gives us time and gives us chances to grow grow our game especially picking the veterans brain and then also just that experience and Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said on draft night he was watching your film you were playing for team USA and he realized that Alex Sar was playing for team France do you remember going up against him and what do you think about being his teammate
yeah I do I do remember going up against them they got us that game as well but it’s also great great being his teammate cuz he has a lot of great things to offer to the court and also being as tall as he is for sure
and the summer league schedule’s out i love the summer league some great matchups for you out in Las Vegas what was your reaction to the summer league schedule and what do you hope to show Wizards fans out in the desert
uh it’s a great chance to show show the team team will be out there for a few days and then also just show the guys that we just got in the draft I would say and then also just to show that we’re trying to take take steps into winning so summer league could be a good chance for us
how about starting that chemistry with some of the other young guys on this team possibly even Bub Carrington
it’s going to be great most definitely because we going to have time to practice and then when we get out there league actually go against somebody besides ourselves
thanks so much Trey welcome to DC and I’ll see you in Vegas yes sir appreciate that
