I’m going solo today for the mailbag. Thanks to everyone in the Discord for the questions programming note. I will be taking a day off tomorrow. I didn’t take a day off on Canada Day because of free agency and figured it was is better to be around for that. So things quieting down now and you know the Raptors have kind of done their business. So, uh, not too much, uh, to touch on in that regard. Uh, I’m not going to touch on summer league stuff today. I I know some of you sent in some questions about summer league. I I’d rather start it on Monday. And so, I’ll take on some of the questions there and then like just be in full summer league mode uh leading up to the first game on Friday. Uh there’s no roster surprises or anything like that, so not much to talk about in that regard. And uh so let’s get right into it. Uh there’s a couple of questions that I left over from the previous mailbag that I’ll get to to start. So Nico, uh you asked both drafties talked about the importance of chemistry. Who do you see as the Raptors clear leaders in the intangible off-court stuff this off seasonason heading into next season and what kind of leadership do they show? Garrett Temple excluded. So leaving out Garrett Temple, I will start with Scotty Barnes. I I think that Scotty has taken some big strides uh this past season. I think he came in with uh quite a few question marks uh after the way the previous season played out and obviously you know it was a lot to take in uh so quickly after the Pascal trade and I think there were some moments that you know he’s probably he probably realized that he needed to learn from and I think the way things played out last season uh were really good in from that standpoint and I think he’s someone over the course of the summer I would absolutely expect to keep in touch with the young guys encourage encourage them. Uh I hope uh to see him at uh summer league supporting the guys. I think that’s something that we’ve seen from previous Raptors leaders and so it would be cool for him to do that. Uh next up I would probably go to Yakapurto. Uh and I think that the leadership growth that he’s shown uh is really great. obviously low expectations, no expectations uh during his first stint with the Raptors when you know he was a young guy and there were enough leaders and he didn’t really need to do that. But I think now recognizing that he is a veteran on the team that he is an important player on the team and he recognizes that his voice matters and when he speaks teammates listen. So, I think he’s someone uh that I would also expect to, you know, be pushing the young guys and helping them take the next step and also holding uh them accountable. Not just the young guys, the the rest of the guys in the starting lineup. I think Yak does have that respect just because of how professional he is um and you know, just an all-around good guy and teammate and so I think he has that respect. Another guy I’ll quickly shout out is Arya Barrett. I think that he does have some quality leadership attributes. I think he’s generally really supportive of the young guys. And not just that, I I think he is someone uh that has a healthy relationship with Scotty, with IQ, with Yak, and always pushing them, always motivating them. You know, they have like kind of their inside jokes. And I think there is that comfort, you know, when Scotty or IQ poke at his defense or, you know, how much he loves to shoot and score. Uh, I think that’s like a healthy chemistry that’s there. And so I think there is a leadership standpoint in terms of how he pushes them and how he’s willing to be pushed as well. Uh, so I think those are the three guys I would highlight. I think someone that could maybe be added to the leadership growth next season depending on how it plays out is Jamal Shed. I think he has good leadership attributes. I think he’s someone who now being looked at to Shepherd the bench unit uh could bring a lot of positives and I feel that you know if you’re looking at him following in the footsteps of a Fred Van Fleet in in Kyle Lowry’s foot footsteps just in terms of leadership uh and that defensive tenacity that they play with. I think he’s someone that potentially could could be a leader for the team uh this upcoming season. Next question. Uh Jeff Zillan asks, “Is anything interesting in Raptors land going to happen over the summer? Uh or, you know, am I expecting things to be pretty quiet?” Well, we’ve seen obviously the roster get filled out. So, nothing new uh on that front. I do think the possibility of an RJ Barrett trade exists at this point. I I do feel that as the free agent stuff simmers down and settles down and we s see these transactions play out, some of these free agent signings are going to end up being signed in trades and whatnot. And so once teams have settled that, I think in Vegas, you might see Bobby get into some conversations and see what’s possible with R.J. Uh and again this is you know in terms of evaluating the fit uh I think there’s some questions there and then I think financially that’s probably the main thing they’re trying to address right like they’re just slightly over the tax about 200k at this point and so if there’s a way for them to get under it I think they will look to do that and yeah if nothing materializes over the course of July then I don’t think you would see anything until the trade deadline. So, I think that’s pretty much the only move that’s really left uh that could happen over the next month. And beyond that, nothing else. Next, we’re going to go into some H for the first 20 games of the season. Again, uh Jeff Zylan with the question, what am I most looking forward to uh in in those first 20 games? So, I won’t list the obvious stuff like what’s Brandon Ingram going to look like as a Raptor? What’s Colin Murray Bole’s going to look like as a Raptor? Like, those are natural things that everyone’s anticipating. Uh, I think fairly obvious, but I think it’s important to start with him. Scotty Barnes, uh, if he can come out looking like an allNBA player, I think that’s that’s a big thing for this team. Uh, I think that, you know, this is the first year of his deal in the Max that he signed, Max extension that he signed. So, expectations are going to be there and understandably so. So, you expect all-star level at a minimum. You expect the defense to be great, but the offensive side of the ball now has to take that next step. What is the three-point shot going to look like? What is the touch inside going to look like? How much did the hand impact him uh over the course of last season? So, uh, I think those are the big things and then obviously, you know, he he has to find a way to be really effective around Ingram and quickly and whatnot quickly. Next up, his willingness to shoot. I think that’s a big thing for me. That three-point volume has to go up. It’s been pretty much steady over the course of his career in terms of uh three-point rate of and in terms of attempts per 36 minutes. So, that’s something that needs to go up on this team. And so that’s something I’ll be looking out for in the first 20 games. And then I will say in terms of a top three, I’ll put Jacobe Walter up there. I’m very curious to see what he can become as a player uh at this level. Uh and I think that if I were to look at a ceiling for next season, I would say he could potentially be the starting shooting guard by the end of the season. That’s the ceiling uh for next season. So, can the defense continue to level up? Will we see less of those rookie mistakes where he’s falling for pump fakes or a little too overzealous going for steals or whatever it might be? Uh, offensively, can the shot continue to progress, the outside shot specifically? Uh, and I think those things would move him up a tier uh, in terms of progression from his rookie season. Now, let’s maybe take on one more question here before we go. Uh, Nico, potential lineup I’m most excited to see CMBB play in. So, we’ve got Nico, you’ve mentioned Jamal Shed, Jacobe Walter, Oiabaji, Coloray Bole, Scotty Barnes as your most exciting lineup. That would be a very fun defensive lineup to watch for sure. I I think just watching that group get after it and, you know, apply a ton of ball pressure and uh and and just be really really active and intense on the defensive side of the ball would be really exciting. I will say that if we see a lot of that lineup, I think something has gone wrong. Uh, I think the talent that the Raptors have in the starting five, there has to be a way to st stagger and have two of those five on the court at all times. Like the goals for next season, imagine if everyone’s healthy and you see stretches where all of Brandon Ingram, Yakapurle, Emanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett are on the bench. Like, what’s going on? We we’d have to ask Darko some serious questions. So with that in mind, I will say taking your lineup. I’m actually like I would just flip Emanuel Quickley and Jamal Shed. And I think you know you have so much defense to protect someone like Quickly, but now you get the pull up three-point shooting in there. You get you know that outside shooting threat uh and then you still have a ton of activity the rest of the way. So, I think that’s a lineup that I would think of uh that could do really, really well. Another one that intrigues me, I’d throw in is Jamal Shed, Jacobe Walter, Colin Murray Boils, uh Brandon Ingram, and Scotty Barnes. So, I think just the length of Ingram and Scotty and CMB together, I think that would be fun to watch and see how impactful they can be. Um, and then so I feel like you still have that scoring punch that you need. Uh, in a fiveman lineup. Uh, and then I think you have the defense, right? Like you you’ve got Shed in slotted for uh, quickly from my previous lineup now. And then you’ve still got uh, Jacobe in there as well. So I think that’s another one that that would be really intriguing for me. Coming up next, we are going to get into uh some playoff talk. Ever wish managing your money felt easier? And we are back at it and going to get into Psychic’s question of who in the East could the Raptors beat in a healthy sevengame series. What has to swing right for them to beat a team above them? So, obvious choices. The Raptors can beat the Wizards, the Hornets, the Nets in a sevename series. I’m very confident of that. Uh I I think we can skip over that. We are not going to be seeing that in the playoffs. Uh the next tier, I probably put the Bulls, the Heat, the Celtics in a similar tier. The Celtics have just lost so much. Drew Holiday, Porzingis, uh Cornett, Al Horford soon to go, and then obviously Tatum is out. So I think those three teams might be in a similar tier. Uh you know, we’ll see how good like Simons, Derek White, Jaylen Brown can be. And then you’ve got Pritchard in there as well. But yeah, I I I don’t think it’s looking too hot for the Celtics. I think I would pick the Raptors to win those three series right now as things stand in terms of what we know about their roster. And then the next tier, uh, I’ve got the Bucks and the Pacers. And I I feel like with the Bucks, we still maybe haven’t seen what their fully formed 25 26 uh roster is going to look like. Giannis would obviously be the best player in the series, but I think the Raptors win out in terms of the depth after that. And yeah, I think the Raptors have some good length uh to throw at Giannis. I think that they’ve got uh the guard the guards that can cause problems for the Bucks as things stand in terms of that matchup. Uh you know, you’ve got Kevin Porter Jr. and whether it’s AJ Johnson or Gary Trent Jr. who starts, you know, that back court you expect quickly and RJ Barrett to handle their business. uh you know, Ingram obviously will get his Yaka Purle versus Miles. Uh so yeah, I like the Raptors right now. We’ll see how that plays out. Pacers again, like they’re decimated, but you know, with the losses of Tyrese and Miles, but I still think they have some solid depth. So, uh I think they’ll be competitive. You know, maybe they go into that tier with the Bulls and the Heat and the Celtics, but for now, I will give them that respect for their incredible depth that they showed and and maybe be a notch above them. Now, this next tier is where I think it gets interesting, really interesting. Uh, the Pistons, the Hawks, the Magic. So, with the Pistons, I do think that, you know, say off the top, you look at Scotty playing Cade to kind of a draw. What’s happening after that, you fully expect Ingram uh to be better than anyone else the Pistons have, they’ll be relying on Jaden Ivy to now be that second scorer that Malik Beasley was. Uh, and then you have the matchup between Yaka Purle and Jaylen Jiren. Uh, I feel like, you know, the Pistons defense showed some really good things against the Knicks, but I I do feel the the Raptors again with the starting five caliber and the way you’ll be able to stagger the bench units. I think the Raptors should have the advantage against the Pistons. This could be a six, seven game series, but I would expect the Raptors to come out on top. And this is where, you know, when you take that top two of uh Ingram and Barnes, I think that could be a huge factor in a series like this. Obviously, you know, Pistons fans will say, well, they went up against a top two in Brunson and Kton did really, really well. Um, but I do feel like again, you know, when you look at the Knicks, uh, they maybe should have got more out of Mauy Bridges in that series, they probably should have got more, uh, you know, from the depth pieces. They didn’t start using their bench, uh, you know, guys like Don Wright and Landre Shamut until later. And so I think that maybe is something that they could have gone to that would have made their life a bit easier. So I right now I actually like the Raptors over the Pistons. So let’s look at the Hawks. I think the Hawks one is really interesting. I think we’ve seen stretch bigs cause problems for the Raptors. We’ve seen Cat dominate against the Raptors. I think Porzingis, again, I’m I’ve been asked to assume full health, so I’m assuming full health. Uh Porzingis, I think, would cause a lot of rap problems for the Raptors. Trey Young is an interesting one because he’s someone who seems to enjoy the big moment and all of that, but he’s also someone who makes quickly more feasible in a playoff setting. Now, how does RJ fare against a guy like Dyson Daniels? Uh, how do Scotty and Ingram perform? Again, you know, in the playoffs, as reductive as it sounds, like your best players have to be your best players, and Scotty and Ingram uh will just have to be great. Uh, and they’ll have to be better. Uh, when you look at the forward advantage, like you would have to expect Scotty to be better than Jaylen Johnson. Jaylen Johnson’s really good. Uh, and then are they playing Research at the three? I think they I think they still have some starting lineup questions to answer like are they playing Okongu and Porzingis together? Um, or are they playing Porzingis at the five. So, we we got to see how that plays out. I think this has probably a sevename series written all over it. I think it’d be really tight. Could go either way. So, what would have to go right for the Raptors to win it? I think that uh the Raptors at the forward position just proved to be too good. And so that combination of Scotty, Ingram, CMBB proves to just be too good. Uh, and then, you know, it kind of overshadows, you know, I think the Hawks might want to think that they have the advantage at the guard position between Trey and Daniels and Nquille Alexander Walker off the bench. Uh, obviously they brought Lucard into the mix as well. So, they might think they have the guard advantage there and it’ll be interesting to see in a playoff setting how that plays out. So, yeah, I think this has seven game series written all over it. Maybe for the experience factor, you edge it to the Hawks, but there’s paths to the Raptors winning a series like this. Orlando, I think, is where it gets challenging and it does get tough, right? I I think that this is one where you go the opposite way. Well, you still think the guards have the advantage, but in a different way. Like Jaylen Suggs is going to be so difficult for Quickley to contend with. Then you’ve still got Desmond Bane. So those two you expect uh problems on both ends, right? And so I I think that aspect of it is going to be tough. Uh and then the front court like that that key battle between Scotty and BI against Paulo and Fron. Like a lot of that is going to come down to a lot of that series is going to come down to how those two duos uh fare and the one thing the Raptors would have to win is the matchup between Yaka Purto and whether it’s Wendell Carter or Goget or whoever it is the Magic have at end up having at center. That’s that’s the matchup that they have to win. Is there a a depth factor here? Uh, I do think it can get uh in favor in the Raptors here. I think that if you know things hit right for the Raptors um and and their pieces uh like you know Jacobe Walter and Ochi and Grady are impactful then you know I think that is a potential advantage. obviously call Murray Boils, you know, when you look at the Magic Depth, you’re looking at Anthony Black and, you know, Tristan Dilva, Jonathan Isaac. They’ve got Tai Jones as the backup point guard now. So, there’s definitely an experience factor that the Magic have that maybe they will favor. Uh and then you know overall when you look at the fact that they’ve had a couple of playoff experiences maybe you tip the hat uh that way as well. So yeah I I think again because I’ve been asked to presume health I have to tip my hat to the Sixers and say if Embiid and George and Maxi are healthy then they are beating the Raptors in a sevename series. I think that top end talent is just too high. And so even if the Raptors have a bit of a depth advantage, I I think having three players like that who uh you know it just becomes very difficult for the Raptors to win a series like that. If I’m assuming like average health, then it changes the dynamics, right? because now I’m thinking about, oh, okay, maybe Embiid plays like 50 games and what is he in the playoffs and all of that, but assuming health, I have to give that respect to Philly, the Cavs, the Knicks, uh, to beat the Raptors in a seven game series. So coming up on the other side we will get into hey how are the Raptors building and uh you know expectations and you know hey uh my favorite player interaction and we are back at it. Psychic with the questions again. Do you think the team is surrounding Scotty with the archetype of players that will work to win a sevengame series? Now, I think they have what it takes to win a sevename series. Do they have what it takes to win a championship? No. We we know that we are in the process of this Raptors team getting out of that initial rebuild phase and getting into hey how can we build a playoff team and you know being a consistent playoff team. So uh I think the Raptors have the tools have the players to win a seven game series depending on how the matchup play plays out. I think that’s obviously such a big part of it. And uh I think when you look at the players around Scotty Barnes, I think in theory you had the right idea with getting someone with three-point pullup juice next to Scotty uh in the back court in Emanuel. quickly. I think RJ provides good rim pressure. Uh, and someone who you can kind of rely on for a consistent 20 a night. You know, we’ll have to see how the efficiency plays out. Brandon Ingram, you identified the need for a bonafideed scorer and so you’ve brought him into the mix to be a late clock guy as well. Yaka Purle, hugely impactful. Impact’s winning. Um, they’re they’re so good. They’re so much better. I should say in the minutes that he’s on the floor. So, I think that so much of this is we just have to find out. I think there are good pieces in place for where the franchise is right now and what they’re trying to accomplish right now. I think the bench I like positives all around, smart, high basketball IQ guys. Uh I would have gone a different way with the pick. For me, I felt that Carter Bryant was the guy. I think he comes in with a three-point shot and offers maybe a bit more of what the Raptors need, whereas maybe CMBB is a bit more surplus. Uh, but hey, we’ll see how that plays out over the years. And I think in terms of just assessing building around Scotty right now, I I will put the rookie pick at that. Uh, and yeah, overall I think this is a roster that you can win a seven game series with depending on how the matchups play out, depending on seating, all of that. Right. Okay. Right hook Ray 54. What should expectations be going into next season? I’ve got the Raptors just around a 45 win team. I I think that, you know, they should make a leap from that 30- win team. I I don’t think they were a 30- win team last season. I think they probably get closer to 37 38 uh without, you know, the stuff that was lurking in the background in terms of offc court objectives, but I think that this is around a 45 win team. Uh is a Giannis trade still possible? I don’t think so. I I think that the Raptors are pretty intent on being a sub tax team and I think that if that was a possibility or something that MLSC wanted to entertain and was willing to pay up the dollars for, then I think they would pay up the dollars to keep Messiah around. I think it’s as simple as that. So, uh, no, I do not think Ayana’s trade is still possible. And are the Raptors committed to Brandon Ingram? I I’ll be perfectly honest here. I I think that the Raptors are committed to everyone until the 26 27 season. I think the next two years are really big in terms of evaluation and assessment. And I think beyond that, no one has a super strong commitment, not even Scotty Barnes. I think the Raptors are going to use these two years to really assess what they have and make decisions accordingly. that I think that’s why the contract contracts are lining up the way they are. I think that you know Darko is up until the 2627 season. Bobby Webster is until the 2627 season. So I think that’s what we’re seeing. Lastly, uh Garland for quickly. I don’t think the Cavs do that. They saw, you know, the lack of size impact them in the playoffs. That’s why they went out and got Lonzo Ball. So, I don’t see any reason for the Cavs to go from Darius Garland to Emanuel quickly. Uh, would they be more inclined to consider something like Darius Garland for Jaylen Suggs? Maybe that that that’s more in line, but again, that that is a contract issue there. There’s a big discrepancy contract wise there. So, uh, Limbs 905, on a scale of one to be, how bad is the IQ contract? So, I don’t think it’s like a really bad contract. I I don’t even know if it’s a bad contract. It’s not It’s not an ideal contract. I will say that. So, IQ is at 5 years, 162.5. uh it can go up to 175 with incentives. Just for comparison for players who are kind of in that same mold prototype Darius Garland 5 years 197 million that can go up to 231 million Tyrese Maxi 5 years 204 million. So uh let me like rewind a little bit. I think with quickly when he was before he got his new contract I was thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 years 125 would have been like a fair deal. So then you price in a bit of oh okay maybe the Raptors have to just like overpay a bit to keep him happy relationship that type of thing. Maybe it goes up to 135 140 maybe 150 at like the super high end. And so it ends up being 162.5. And the reason now this enters the territory of a bit of a difficult contract is because of the second apron stuff. And every million dollars matters now with the second apron. And I think that’s where the Raptors have overpaid and it can be costly the extent to which they’ve overpaid. Like for example, the following season uh the cap is only expected to spike 7% as opposed to the 10% norm. So that also impacts another team viewing how they view the quickly contract. So I do think there is a bit of a negative impact uh with IQ on a scale like say ifyama is a one because he’s still on his rookie deal and we know what he is. Brad Deal is on the other end. I’d say quickly is maybe a a six six and a half. Uh maybe Jabari Smith 5 years 120 getting that extension. He’s at a five. Uh so I’d put quickly at like a six six and a half. And that’s a meaningful difference in terms of negotiating deals moving forward. Mummy Peak asks, “Is the Messiah exit a decision that will genuinely feel impactful in regards to Encourt product or is it just vibes?” So, a lot of the bad in the last few years has come down to, you know, how Messiah viewed Pascal. Didn’t genuinely build around him the right way. a vision 6ix9ine around Pascal. Like that just does not make sense. Not extending Pascal was kind of his preference. Like he was not in favor of extending Pascal. Uh but I will say, you know, as I wrote in my piece at Raptors in 7, Messiah has bounced back from mistakes and failures really really well. Like the Bruno Kabolo pick turned into the creation of the entire Raptors 905. The Washington Wizards sweep became a trip to the conference finals the very next season. Lebronto turned into a championship. Uh the other positives I’ll throw in favor of Messiah is like the relationships he had around the league, right? Like his uh eye for talent, his connections in Africa and that whole talent pool, right? Like those are big things that you are losing. So I do think the Raptors will feel the impact of that and I think from a grander scheme MLSC moving on from Messiah to shows a shift in objectives and I think Basai is a big dreamer wanted to accomplish big things here and I don’t think uh MLSC shares those aspirations. All right, to wrap up with this final question, Psychic asks, “My favorite NBA player interaction story, if I have one.” So, I will let you in on a little moment that I shared with Pascal Seakum uh back in the Benchmob days. So, I got to cover the 1617 season and uh I was mainly covering the Raptors 905 and that’s where uh you know I first kind of got to know Pascal and talked to him just a little bit and uh we’re both big soccer fans so was able to work some of that in. So sometimes we would talk about FIFA and things like that. And so the 1718 season, the benchmob season, uh all of a sudden, you know, that group is starting to get its shine and is glowing up. And uh I remember being in the Raptors locker room and Pascal was sitting uh at his locker and it was just a quiet time and then he called me over and he was like, “Yo, look at this. Look at this. Uh, and Nike had sent him a uh like a keychain. Uh, and it was it was a Nike shape, but it was a chili like uh for Spicy P. And I thought that, you know, how excited he was in the moment was so cool. He was like so appreciative of having that recognition. And it was, you think about the things he’s accomplished since and how excited he was in that moment. That was really cool. Uh, obviously I appreciated the fact that I mean I was close by too in terms of just calling me over. Uh, but yeah, I I think just that joy. I think a lot of times when we think about Pascal, we think about joy and I think that uh that was a moment of joy for him uh that was really cool to see. Uh, and obviously it’s it’s a pretty small thing when you think about all the things he’s accomplished since. Uh, so yeah, I think I will wrap it up there.
