[Music] d’angelo Russell you are a Dallas Maverick the Mavericks and D’Angelo Russell have agreed to a 2-year $13 million deal here in the 2025 NBA free agency welcome in to Mavericks today by chat sports jeffrey Cooperstein here with you guys for the next 10 minutes or so we are going to be breaking down the D’Angelo Russell signing for the Mavs off the rip for me though grade the signing down there in the comments section a B C D or F what do you think of the newest Dallas Mavericks point guard curious to hear what you guys have to say i’ve talked over the last few days or so that I’m not really in love with D’Angelo Russell the player for the Dallas Mavericks i’m not sure that he is the point guard that I want to run this Dallas Mavericks team and for the first 55 to 60 games of the year it is going to be DLO who will be that opening night starting point guard and probably will be your starter until the middle of February when Kyrie Irving returns from that torn ACL russell last year with the Lakers and the Nets played in 29 games for each team averaged almost 13 points a night for the Nets on less than 30% from three last year look he did not have a great season last year whatsoever but there is a reason why the Mavericks wanted to go after D’Angelo Russell and while it’s not my favorite option he was likely the best option out there russell in the last four years of his career with Brooklyn with the Lakers with Minnesota you take a look at that 23-24 season when he played in 76 games with the Lakers that team made the conf the year before that they made the conference finals and Russell had the best stretch of basketball honestly of his career over that 130 games or so where in 23-24 he averaged 18 points over six assists shot 41.5% from three and then you had the year when he got traded from Minnesota to the Lakers averaged 17.5 points and shot almost 40% from three as well that’s what the Mavericks hope they are going to be getting from DLO and he is going to be the starting point guard for this team right now that does not have a point guard because Kyrie is become returning from that ACL if the Mavericks are fully healthy this is what the rotation could look like with Kyrie Irving Klay Thompson Cooper Flag Anthony Davis and Derek Lively you’ll have D’Angelo Russell coming off the bench alongside with Brandon Williams and Jaden Hardy at the guards max Christie uh PJ Washington Kayla Martin and Naji Marshall all at the wings you also do have Omax Prosper as well alongside Daniel Gaffford and Dwight Pal a lot of moving parts still potentially with this roster you could see Omax being moved you could see PJ Washington be moved cayla Martin still available as well cooper Flag could slide to the two and you could bring Klay Thompson off the bench so the Mavericks do certainly have options but one thing we do know is D’Angelo Russell going to be the opening night starting point guard for this Mavericks team and like I said this is the move that the Mavericks wanted to make i’m just not sure I was super in love with signing D’Angelo Russell when the three options came out there were Malcolm Brogden Chris Paul and Russell russell was the third my the third option that I would have chosen out of those guys i would have taken Brogden and CP3 over him it sounded like CP3 wants to stay on the West Coast he’s going to sign with either the the Suns or the Clippers and Brogden I guess just wasn’t the Maverick’s preferred option so they ended up going with DLO and look the Mavericks could have done worse given the options available i also don’t know if I like the signing as much as everyone else does i think it could end up working out it could end up being fine i I just really hope he doesn’t fall into the Spencer Denwitty bad shot clock bad shot chucker hold the ball for 20 seconds and take a horrible shot i just really hope he’s not that D’Angelo Russell i hope he’s the 22 through 2024 D’Angelo Russell that played for the Los Angeles Lakers who is a guy that can be trusted to go out to get 17 18 points a game and do it with pretty good efficiency we’ll talk about D’Angelo Russell more here Mavericks were pretty limited in what they could do this offseason as they only had that taxpayer midlevel exception and that’s what they used in D’Angelo Russell as the Mavs were above the luxury tax so they only had that to use and they slide Russell in they give him that full taxpayer mid-level exception so Russell is basically the only major move that the Mavericks are going to make in free agency outside of a trade as D’Angelo Russell is your newest Dallas Maverick again you see the stats on screen here and look a as time has gone on I’ve been more and more warming up to the idea that DLO is a Maverick um do I love it no could they have done worse yes I think they could have i just don’t know if he’s going to be able to be that guy we saw in Los Angeles for that year and a half where he was fantastic and average almost 18 points a night on 40% from three like if you’re getting that guy and he’s giving you six and a half assists a game as well great if you’re getting the guy who played in Brooklyn last year and in LA last year I think you’re in a bit of trouble so D’Angelo Russell who will I’ll say this though when Kyrie Irving comes back and you can bring DLO off the bench play the one or the two you’re looking at a much better constructed roster than you are with Russell as your starting PG so I I like DLO a lot is he a great player no has he been a good player thoughts on D’Angelo Russell coming to the Mavericks is this was kind of expected for the last couple of days as the Mavericks emerged as a leading suitor for Russell over the weekend and then it was all but confirmed that the Mavs were going to sign DLO uh coming into Monday morning and they did just that there right as basically the first hour of free agency ended with the Mavericks agreeing a 2-year $13 million contract with DLO we don’t know if that is a player option or if that is a straight two-year deal as of right now I think it’s a straight two-year deal so um it sounds like he’ll be here for at least the next couple of seasons maybe the Mavericks do trade him in the off season in order to get another piece in here but when you look at what the Mavs have on the roster D’Angelo Russell’s making less than Jaden Hardy is so when you say that it’s like is it really that bad of a deal no is it my number one A+ preferred option no i would have rather gone with Chris Paul but as currently constructed think you could have done a lot worse than D’Angelo Russell and now we’ll have to figure out what number he’s going to wear because he can’t wear number one as that’s Jaden Hardies can’t wear zero unless Dante XM leaves we’ll see what he can’t wear 11 either because that’s Kyrie Irving so D’Angelo Russell is your newest Dallas Maverick here signing a 2-year $13 million deal with the Mavericks and this deal won’t become official until July 6th when the Mavericks can officially sign him but we know that it’s going to be done and they verbally agreed to this deal over the weekend more than likely even though you know no tampering but of course we knew that the Mavs were getting ready to sign DLO here uh look man like I said I just really hope he’s the guy that
