We have multiple shocking New York Knicks free agency updates that nobody saw coming. And the Knicks dodged a major bullet here as there was a lot of talk about the Knicks being interested in multiple different players who just would not have fit at all what the Knicks are trying to do here and would not have helped winning and it would have been a disaster. However, there is still interest in one of these guys and we’re going to break it all down. What’s up, guys? Welcome back to Nick’s Digest. It’s Chris here and we’re going to jump right into things. As always, if you guys are that percentage that’s not subscribed to Nick’s Dodgers, we got daily videos like this, all the free agency and offseason updates. We got a new head coach in Mike Brown. There’s a ton going down about that along with a bunch more moves to come. All that being said, let’s jump into the video. There is a lot to go over on the Knicks. As Leon Rose checks every nook, cranny, he looks under every rock, mattress, desert, cactus. That man will look anywhere to find talent to help this New York Knicks team win. And he will check in with anyone to test values of other players and also because of genuine interest in so many different players on this team. And when that happens, sometimes you see faces like this one. Hello, Ben. I just realized I looked the wrong way. Pretend that didn’t happen. Hello, Ben. There it is, guys. This Do I even have to say it? The New York Knicks checked in on Ben Simmons in free agency. This is a true story revealed by Ian Begley. The New York Knicks have checked in on Ben Simmons in free agency. Yeah, that Ben Simmons, you know, the former first overall pick. Insane Ben Simmons. The guy who last season averaged five points, five rebounds, five assists, did not get a block or a steal per game despite used to being one of the best defenders at a very young age or the best on ball defender in the NBA. The man who’s never shot a three-pointer because he’s terrified of it for some reason or another and then post videos of him in the offseason shooting three-pointers. We’re all done falling for it. He’s about to be 29 years old and he’s a free agent in the off season. And there is a lot of talk surrounding what he is going to do next. And it was revealed by The Athletic that both two Clippers players, Amir Coffee and Ben Simmons are incumbent free agents. And while both were rotation players entering the postseason, they were both out of the mix by the end of the Denver series. In Coffey’s case, he didn’t play a single minute in the playoffs. Coffee and Simmons are both expected to get better offers elsewhere than they will from the Clippers. with Simmons in particular looking at teams with exceptions. He’s not looking for a minimum deal. Oh, guys, sorry, wrong thing. Oh, guys, look. Ben Simmons, as I just scroll through a million images. It’s been a long day. There’s been a lot of recording. They hired a new coach. It’s a lot. But Ben Simmons, he uh he doesn’t he’s not looking for a minimum deal. Well, you know, when I go out to bars, I’m only I’m not looking for anything below a 10, a perfect 10. So, I guess I’m owed that because that’s what I’m looking for. Not like I’m holding out or anything and saying that my back is injured whether it is or whether it isn’t. JJ Reic seemed to indicate that it was. Look, no. No, Ben. No, you don’t get to show up here and ruin the team like everywhere you go has a dark cloud hanging over it because you want to act a fool. Guys, this is a guy who we’ve seen this from for 10 years now. He went to LSU. That team had no chance of competing, but he went there. Why? Cuz LSU was a damn fun school to go to. It is. It’s a fun place to be. You’re near New Orleans. It’s You’re going to have a good time partying it up. You’re not going to win anything in basketball that year that Ben Simmons went, but he didn’t care. Ben Simmons also didn’t go to class when he was at LSU as well. One should mention he did get suspended at one point because he wasn’t going to class and his grades sucked. But let’s bring him on to New York. He sounds like a perfect guy and a perfect fit for this team. Why is Leon Rose checking in on Ben Simmons? What’s the reasoning here? I have two thoughts on that. One, Leon Rose is checking in on everyone, which is possible. Or two, Leon Rose is checking in on Ben Simmons because Leon Rose and Rich Paul have a repaired relationship after the Knicks, you know, hired Mike Brown and on top of that have checked in on LeBron James. So Leon Rose is just checking in on all of Rich Paul’s clients like, “Hey, I have an interest in doing business with you.” If you ask me, that is the precise reason why we are seeing Leon Rose do this right now. Now, Ben Ben Simmons, he’s had an interesting career arc. On his career, averages 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, shooting 55% from the field as well. He’s got a bunch of awards. He was the Steels champ. He was a three-time all-star 2019 2020 AllNBA player, 2017 18 all rookie who won rookie of the year over Donovan Mitchell and is a two-time alldefensive first team winner. Now, on top of that, Ben Simmons, when we look at the career numbers on the man, what we see is a guy who won rookie of the year, was an all-star in his second season. In his third season, became the best honball defender in basketball, leading the league in steals, being fourth in defensive player of the year, was an all-star AllNBA third team, and on the alldefensive first team. The next year, he was 12th in MVP, voting second defensive player of the year, voting an all-star and all defensive first team. once again putting up 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and still being one of the most locked on defenders in the NBA. But then he held out and claimed he had a back injury. Again, whether it’s true or it wasn’t, we saw Ben Simmons start to fall apart in the playoffs. Most notably when he passed up an open layup that didn’t end up going in, and people wondered what the hell was wrong with Ben Simmons. Well, he ended up in Brooklyn as part of that James Harden trade that bought that brought James Harden to Philadelphia. And since then, he’s barely played. I mean, he played 42 games in Brooklyn that season once he kind of came back after a very, very long time. Continued to deal with backs back problems and things just did not go well for Ben Simmons. He went down to seven points, six rebounds, and five and, excuse me, and six assists. So, what we saw was a Ben Simmons who was regressing. Then the following year, what we saw in the 2024 season is was Ben Simmons show up in a total of 15 games. After that, we saw Ben Simmons play 51 games this season between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. Now, in that time, what did we see from Ben Simmons once he got to the Clippers where he always wanted to be so he could be in Los Angeles after all? He averaged three points, three rebound or four rebounds, and three assists. He shot 43% from the field despite the fact that he only shoots from the paint. His steals went down, his blocks went down. Oh, yeah. His minutes went down cuz he wasn’t doing anything of value. Now, on top of that, when we consider the Knicks and their veteran free agent situation, as the New York Post mentioned, the Knicks probably cannot afford to offer more than veteran minimums to sign Simmons because of the pending additions of Jordan Clarkson and Garishan Yabui in free agency that put the team at the second apron for salary cap purposes. And that’s true. They can barely even offer Ben Simmons a veteran minimum. They really can’t offer Ben Simmons a veteran minimum. However, he’s not the only player who the New York Knicks have harbored recent interest to who’s a former first round pick. And the other one is DeAndre Aton. As it was revealed by Sham Serrani after the Lakers that the Knicks, Clippers, Bucks, Pacers, Cavs, and Nuggets all had interest in Aton before his decision to sign with the Lakers. Multiple teams reached out to Portland Trailblazers GM Joe Cronin after the buyout of Aiden on Sunday and they all got rave reviews of him as a teammate despite the fact that there was some reports of him potentially getting in fights in the locker room and stuff like that. eight in last season. The numbers were a lot different than Ben Simmons’s. Put up 14 and a half points, 10 rebounds, one and a half assist, one block, and nearly a steal per game, shooting 56% from the field. The defense is a negative though with DeAndre Aton. It’s the big problem surrounding him is he’s not a great defender at all. He was supposed to be a generational defender and just a generational big man. That didn’t happen. Part of the thing was that he could hit three-pointers. He shot 19% from three. So DeAndre Aton has not been the player who the Suns expected when they drafted him with that first overall pick over Luca Donuch by the way. Now Phoenix had him for a while and he did miss part of a year because he got suspended for peed usage but he was solid throughout his time with the Suns was traded in a major major deal. ended up with Ysef Nerkich on the Suns along with Bradley Beal. And what we then saw would be Aidan go to Portland for two years where the production and games kind of dipped. He dealt with injuries. He missed a game because the ice on the roads was too slippery for Aiden to get to because he couldn’t drive because there was a massive cold snap up in the Northwest. And we saw him in his Trailblazers career average 15.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He shot a 57% clip from the field. didn’t really shoot threes at all, but shot 16.7% from three-point range throughout his time with Portland. He was not what Portland hoped he would be. He blocked 0.9 shots per game and just truly was not a great defender with a true shooting percentage of 58.5, which you do want to be better out of a big man. He’s an elite rebounder. No one’s saying he’s not an elite rebounder. I really don’t think this is a huge needle mover for the Lakers. I don’t I don’t think the Lakers are in good position at all. I understand why LeBron might request a trade. I think it actually makes sense for him to do so. But with all this being said, what were you thinking here, Leon? Kind of interesting. What is Leon cooking right now? And frankly, I’m very happy that we’re not going to see either of these guys end up in Knicks jerseys at all. I They don’t need Aidan whatsoever.
