you know hearing my name get called sharing that moment with my mom my dad and my two brothers that’s a moment i’m going to remember for the rest of my life [Music] oh yeah it’s flag day in dallas welcome into nba today alongside three-time nba champ danny green i’m george sidano in for malikica andrews andrea carter and bobby marks will join the show in just a moment but first the dallas mavericks introduced cooper flag to the media earlier today and it’s been quite the off season so far for the mavs as kyrie irving and company are not there but flag is here to plant it and save the day
i think it’s a blessing um like you said a lot of people in this position or the situation aren’t you know granted this opportunity so i just feel really blessed um and grateful for for the situation i’ve been given and i’m just looking forward to being a sponge you know just getting down here um i’m excited to just learn um soak it all in and learn from the guys that are older and have been through it all before
you know we’re in win now mode and so he adds to that um but he’s also the future of the franchise so i think you get you get two in one so to speak so um it’s it’s you know perfect storm for us
it’s all right to fail it’s all right to turn the ball over we’ve talked about that um you know just understanding the guys that i’ve been around that have been young from giannis giving him the ball and he failed um but he he wanted to come back and have the ball so i’m excited about giving him the ball against the lakers and see what happens let’s get it started right off the bat u i’m
curious obviously you didn’t get to watch him play when you were younger but what do you know about your head coach’s playing career if anything it was it was in black and white so definitely didn’t see it
no i mean i didn’t get to watch it a ton um i’m going to have to freshen up you know do my research um but i think you know everybody talks about how legendary of a player he was um so i think you know i’ll have to watch some more and figure that out but he was a killer so thank you

thank you come on young fell you got to watch those youtube highlights okay all right listen we know it’s been a tumultuous offseason for the mavs i mentioned kyrie irving irving did turn down his player option but intends to sign a three-year $119 million deal that will keep him in dallas as he recovers from his acl injury irving averaged 255 and five as a math they also brought back key players like daniel gaffford who intending is intending to sign a three-year extension up to worth nearly 60 million and keeps him locked in through 2029 to join ad and lively up front and that front court will feature that man cooper flag who the mavs picked number one in the 25 draft the youngest number one overall pick only behind lebron james and provide a dynamic player to pair with an established maverick stars all right now joining us from atlanta basketball analyst andrea carter and front office insider bobby mark so we’ll start with you danny though what are the expectations for the mavs i mean they have to be a lot better this year than they were last year right um with everybody being healthy still waiting on kyrie to see what he looks like but this is a top six seated team and fully full strength you expect them to be in the top three they make these moves for ad you have a short window they want to win now you got cooper flag you have some depth you keep daniel gaffford kyrie extension you look need a point guard or some you know depth at that position but the expectations for this team they got to at least make the western conference finals if they’re healthy and if not the finals

that’s the expectation right traded for ad you want to win now you got to get to the western conference finals at least this year and within the next two or three years you have to be in the finals all right bobby what do you think

no listen and i thought listen when we we’re going to show their roster here in a minute here i mean danny’s got a really good point as far as when you take a look at this dallas mavericks roster and when we’re looking at it it’s certainly with kyrie irving in in the lineup right when you look at it this is probably what we’re we’re seeing at january based on jason kid’s press conference i’m ready to put cooper flag at point guard based on what jason just said here but now let’s the realization that kyrie’s going to be out and we’re going to put brandon williams who is one of their reserves in the lineup here right now so this is kind of where you see before we start the free agent period on june 3rd here here’s what dallas has to offer in in free agency here they’ve got the $5.7 million tax mid-level exception to go out and find a temporary starter at point guard is that a player like d’angelo russell maybe even would chris paul even come for that amount they’ve got 12 players between below $20 million they’re comparable to the how indiana has built their roster with their depth and then of course they’ve got two first to trade so dallas certainly has the assets in free agency to go out and get that point guard if they need but it’s going to be key to keep this this team above water when kyrie gets back from that injury andrea cooper is not luca but where could he potentially have a bigger impact for the mavs this season well first of all i want to give a wellness check on danny he’s had to talk about duke guys so much recently so man it’s been unbelievable danny you good i’m all right i’m all right we got through it hopefully no more you know khan kipple all these guys
kaman malo i’m i’m done with the duke guys man but cooper is a good player so i have to give it where credit is due
be ready we’re going to have to keep talking about them in a little bit so just be ready but thank you andrea for the chat 100% you’re you know you’re you’re doing great danny just checking on you and one area that cooper flag will be great is on the defensive end the defensive energy that he brings and the way that he can impact the game without scoring the hustle plays the blocks the steals the deflections just being disruptive on the defensive end he can hang his hat on that side of things while the offense comes around for him at the nba level because defense is energy its effort its motor its instincts he has all of those things so there’s an immediate spot for him to come and impact the game what i love about what cooper said and i see this translating perfectly as he gets into the league was how he said he leaned on the older guys when he was at duke he leaned on sean james he leaned on malik brown mason gillis even some of the older guys that didn’t log a lot of minutes cooper leaned on those guys to get into his groove at the college level he’ll do the same thing with the dallas mavericks he’ll lean on the veterans and find his groove and remember when he was in college it wasn’t until john shy told him “the team will be successful if you are more aggressive.” once cooper realized the team would benefit from him being more aggressive that’s when he started being more aggressive so i see that exact same translation happening for cooper at the nba level i feel like it’s going to be very seamless starting with his defense first and all the offense starts to come as he finds his flow and then yeah when kyrie irving is back healthy they’re contenders in my opinion straight away thank you working with boss talking to my family and trying to get the look that i like nice little watch from hugo it’s really dope the accessory that i’m wearing tonight looking sharp almost matching both got their red bottoms on other than me there’s liam asa derek kaman khan seion and tyrese so seven does

that’s better than anything you can ever dream of i don’t know how to describe it it’s incredible what a time to be cooper flag for sure what an amazing amazing moment for him and the nba as he’s the number one overall pick all right it’s time for us to say howdy to our band tim mcmahon tim what was the scene like today in dallas as cooper was introduced howdy george look obviously there’s a ton of excitement this is a new era in dallas this is a franchise that needed a blast of fresh air of good news those 1.8% odds to win the lottery panned out here comes cooper flag and it’s a really unique situation for a number one overall pick who’s joining a team that expects to win now that’s loaded with veterans loaded with you know a few future hall of famers and look cooper flag’s just excited to get here as he said to learn to get to work and the work begins or at least the first glimpse that we’ll get of the work that begins july 10th in the summer league opener against the los angeles lakers

i’m not exactly sure on a plan i’m planning on playing um but yeah i’m not sure on any sort of plan i don’t think we’ve had any of those conversations yet
i’m excited about giving him the ball against the lakers and see what happens i i want to put him in the at the point guard i want to make him uncomfortable um and see how he reacts um being able to run the show um being able to play the two play the three he’s he’s comfortable playing that and you know what cooper flag reminds jason kid of the guy that he shared the rookie of the year award with another duke dude that was grant hill that point forward type of player as he said he’s planning to give him the ball is planning to let him spread his wings see what he can do in a primary playmaking role this is not something new to jason kidd by the way remember when he went to milwaukee there was a 19-year-old kid on the roster named giannis and makoupo what did jay kid do put the ball in his hands let him spread his wings that’s worked out awfully well for the greek freak and they hope to have similar results here in dallas with cooper flag yeah no doubt about it tim thank you so much for the time and of course cooper flag will have a veteran leaden roster too as well so don’t miss cooper flag’s summer late debut taking on the lakers in the first game of a july 10th double header then it’s dylan harper and the spurs facing vj edgecom and the 76ers at 10 eastern both games on espn
