Spurs Walker Kessler Trade After Price Tag Revealed?

Spurs Walker Kessler Trade After Price Tag Revealed?

What’s going on everyone? So, we finally got reports on what Walker Kesler kind of the trade package in order to acquire him would be. And according to reports, Utah is looking for kind of two first as well as a young player in order to land Walker Castler. Now, to some that might seem like a bit of a steep price, but he is already one of, if not the best defensive centers in all of basketball. Look, Spurs have Victor Womenyama. He’s probably winning defense player of the year. He’s probably going to win multiple of those things. Wimby definitely is there. But even in some areas, some of the metrics, Walker Kesler is actually better at, right? So, you kind of look at the landscape. I would take Victor Womenyama. No doubt. I want to be clear. But, you know, to be fair, Walker Kesler is right there based on last season and all of the def all the different defensive metrics and stats, right? So you have you would potentially have two of the best defensive front court players in all of basketball. You’d be arguably the best defensive front court in all of basketball, right? Just based on the metric that you should be, right? You have teams now like Miles Turner and and and Giannis Antmpo like that’s going to be posing. But you know, Lively and Anthony Davis, right? So there’s some other really good defensive front courts that also just have more experience. But, you know, you add in a Walker Kesler to a player like Victor Womenyama, you know, this would be tough. Spurs could easily get to the price that Utah wants for a Walker Kesler and not even bat an eyelash, right? They could easily I mean, you’re not obviously you’re not trading Stefon Castle or Carter Bryant or any of like the young guys, but you have multiple players. Maybe you can even pull off another deal, right? Supposedly the Spurs are interested in like a John Collins. Could you maybe get a John Collins and a Walker Kesler and have uh you know kind of a veteran athletic kind of three and Dwan that can come off the bench be a rotation piece right Brandon Walker Kessler you could start Walker Kesler alongside Victor Womenyama I know some people don’t you know anytime I talk about getting a center and moving Wim to the four a lot of people are like well can’t play with a center no Wimby it’s just hard to play with a guy like Rudy Gobear who basically can just clog the paint right outside of five feet he’s a non fun factor offensively. And then Zack Collins was awful for the Spurs, right? He was actually really good for Chicago and it was like where was that at, right? If he was anything close to that, he probably would have been starting alongside Victor Wimyama. So, I don’t think it’s that. I just think you need the right kind of center alongside Wimpy. But also, Wimy literally last season half of his field goal attempts were from three-point range, right? Half of his attempts were from three-point range. Walker Kesler is one of the best offensive rebounders in all of basketball. He had nearly five offensive rebounds last year. You know, would be really good down low while Wimy’s taking eight threes a game. A center that can get the offensive rebounds and give you second chance points because not like Wimby was shooting 45% from three-point range. We’ll see what he does this year and see if he can continue to make strides. But, you know, even if he’s 37%, which would be up from last year, he’s going to miss more than he’s going to make, right? So that means that having a guy in a Walker Castle that could rebound there, you’d be one of the best interior defense teams, if not the best interior defensive team. And then on top of that, you have Stfan Castle and De’aran Fox as your point of attack guys. Add in like a Harrison Barnes or if you want to go the young route with Carter Bryant, you might be one of the better defensive teams in all of basketball, right? So I I really kind of like the idea of Walker Kesler and you can always kind of have a Kesler or Wimi on the court at all times, right? You start them both. Maybe Kesler goes to the bench, Wimi kind of closes out, and then Wim goes to the bench, Kesler’s back in. You can always keep one of those guys. You know, add Luke Cornet into the mix, right? Luke Cornet can obviously be a backup, but you can play Wimi alongside either of them. So, you can kind of get Wimi minutes at the four, spot minutes at the five, but primarily playing the four, kind of have that balance that you’d be looking for in your starting units as well as in the bench rotation, all that stuff. And you’d always have a defensive rim deterrent at all times on the court, right? Sometimes multiple uh defensive rim deterrents on the court. So, you know, if you have a team that has, you know, stretch big that’s trying to pull out Walker Kesler. Well, Wimi can go out and defend that. Walk Kesler could still stay down into the paint and still defend, then he can even get out and close out shooters and stuff like that. So, get I I really like the potential balance that you could get with the Walker Castle. He fits your timeline. He’ll be 24 later this month. So, he’s young. There’s plenty of growth, potential upside. He’s shown the ability to to score, make plays out of the post, as well as even a little bit to stretch the floor and have some three-point ability. Not a guy I’d want taking threes right now. Something that I’d want him to kind of work on, right? But the the fact that that’s an option and you see him and his ability to even kind of take those shots, he doesn’t have a bad shot. Just kind of needs to get the reps and work and and I think you can kind of shift him to that. I wouldn’t want him, you know, like Wimby where he’s taking like eight threes a game, but you know, he’s taking three threes a game, just, you know, in different offensive actions and stuff. I think you can kind of get away with that. Um, he’s got, you know, the the size. He’s he’s a true 7-footer, right? 245 pounds. So, he gives you like real interior size, not a guy that’s, you know, 220, right? So, I think that this would be really good for a team like the San Antonio Spurs to bring in Walker Kessler. Look at what he did last season, right? To kind of go over the stats. 58 games played, 58 games started, 30 minutes per game. For those that are like, “Ah, 58 games, that’s not great.” Got to keep in mind Utah was tanking. And they lit I mean, they were like blatantly obvious. They set their starters out for literally weeks at a time. Like it’s not an exaggeration. Like literally weeks at a time would sit out their starters. So he probably plays 65 to 70 games if that doesn’t happen. But uh 30 minutes per game, uh he’s took 7.2 2 field goal attempts per game, 66.3% from the field. Uh he was he took 6 uh three-point attempts, so not even a full attempt uh per game. Uh and was 17.6. He is for his career on.3 attempts. 19.6. Again, he has shown the ability to doesn’t mean he’ll actually become that, but he’s shown the ability kind of work with them. Maybe that could be something that eventually is added to his arsenal. But two-point range, um 6.6 6 attempts on 70.6% EFG of 67.1% from the floor. Free throw shooting, that’s one area that he definitely needs to work on. Uh 52% from the foul line this past season. He is a career 3 or 54% uh free throw shooter on two attempts. Uh again, he’s young, plenty of upside, plenty of potential, so obviously there’s going to be he’s not a perfect player, but he is he’s pretty close for what this team needs. Um again, 12.2 two uh rebounds, including 4.6 offensive rebounds. Like I said earlier, he almost had five offensive rebounds a game. 4.6 offensive rebounds. Um one uh basically two assists, just under two assists. Uh a full steel, we’ll round up a little bit. Full steal, two and a half blocks, and 11.1 points. So, he’s already a double double guy. He already is a guy that is one of the best defensive centers in all of basketball. I mean, check check. You just go down the list. a guy can do a little bit of everything out there on the basketball court. He’s a guy that if I’m the Spurs, I am heavily considering, you know, two first and a, you know, young player. Again, Spurs can really do that. But, you know, just cuz somebody wants something doesn’t mean that that’s the price that they get. Maybe you can do something like, hey, we’ll give you a, like I said, maybe you’re lumping in a John Collins or something and it’s more expanded trade. Maybe you’re doing like a Devin Vel and something to to land uh you know and giving up a first or maybe two first but you’re justifying it on like hey we’re getting John maybe you’re giving up the same type of package for a Walker Kesler but you’re giving up kind of more a higherend guy and also bringing in you know John Collins in the process as well. You also got to keep in mind that the uh somebody’s going to have to pay him Walker Kesler that is right. So does Utah want to pay Walker Kesler? kind of one of the reasons why it appears that they’re shopping him is because he’s about to get a new contract if you’re the Spurs. I mean, again, you could have your foundation there. I mean, your future could essentially be uh Dylan Harper, Stefan Castle, uh Carter Bryant, right? Victor Womenyama and Walker Kessle. You might have the best team in basketball in like two, three years tops. That’s again, you’re versatile, your defense, you you you have basically all the tools at your disposal. you have Darren Fox for, you know, the next few years. We’ll kind of see what they end up doing with him. There’s a lot of talk about like, hey, they might have to make a decision. I don’t think it’s something that they have to make a decision on necessarily this season. I think he’ll sign his new contract with the Spurs. Um, but you know, we’ll see. Time will tell kind of how this progresses. But anyway, as always, this is a discussion, past question on you. Let me know your thoughts and opinions down in the comments. The San Antonio Spurs could use a couple upgrades and continue to round out the roster. Spurs need a forward or center and could look to the Utah Jazz Walker Kessler to add alongside Victor Wembanyama. Spurs know the asking price for Kessler and now its does the trade make sense?

  1. I would do that, if we can get Kessler and Collins from them that would be a win. But first Giannis is the option, if we can’t get Giannis

  2. I like this too. Teams are getting taller & have twin tower starting combos – need to match up. I'll say again that taller players these days are also agile and have other things to offer (mid range/3, passing), and very few of the lumbering slow type, so the old small ball centers might not be as effective. I'm glad we already have Kornet. Adding Kessler would allow us better match-ups and even advantage. He does play with Markkanen. I agree totally that Wemby will benefit from having someone down low because he likes taking 3's.
We'll need a shooting coach though – FT% @ 53 career & 3pt % 19.6 career. Immediately we'll benefit from his inside game, rebounding and D. Kessler & Collins? That would be even better!!! Not sure about the quality of future 1st rounders, but if we'll be in the playoffs and have a deep team, maybe giving up 2 might not be a bad idea (?). Just not sure whom else will need to be part of the trade.

  3. Would love to get Kessler but two 1st and a young player just sounds to steep a price. Plus this is Danny Ange we are dealing with I don't think it would be a good idea to negotiate with him. BW might walk out the deal missing his shirt and pants lol…

  4. I'll give Utah, Devin Vassell, a first round protected, a first round pick swap, and 2 2nd round picks. If needed get a 3rd team involved.

  5. Ainge is doing what he does, asks for the moon. No thank you. The only time I would ever conside trading with him is if he was desperate to trade away a player.

Also, what is the case for trading assets for Kessler now that the Spurs are paying Kornet $40+ million over the next four years? Yes, the Spurs should get another backup big. But to trade assets to get Kessler right now makes little sense, imo.

  6. If your trading Vassell to bring in a better talent (which I would agree with)…. It should be for another wing like a Trey Murphy or Cam Johnson before he got traded to replace that starting spot. We lack shooting & although I agree with trading Vassell, losing him means losing one of our best shooters so the goal should be to replace that with better talent especially since we just signed a really good backup big so the need for that spot isn’t as big as it used to be
