TRADE BREAKDOWN: NETS TRADE CAM JOHNSON FOR MICHAEL PORTER JR | Nets Fans You Know EMERGENCY PODCAST

Are you disappointed that we didn’t get more back from CJ? Is this an underwhelming return?
That’s a great question. Um it offer [Music] big time Nets win.
The only Net fans, you know, the only what? The only Nets fans you know. I mean, come on, man. Or are these guys?
Welcome back to Only Net Fans you know podcast. I’m Peter. Emergency episode. Cam Johnson traded to Denver for Michael Porter Jr. and one first round pick. Joining me to break down the trade is Gary from Nothing But Nets. What’s going on, bro?
It’s good to be back. Thanks for having me on, Pete. Looking forward to chopping it up with you.
At 7:08 p.m., Sham tweets out the deal. Cam Johnson is a Nugget. Michael Porter Jr. is a Net and the Nets get Denver’s 2032 firstrounder. Porter Jr. is a 610 small forward. He put up 18 points a game, 50% from the field, 39% from three and seven rebounds. What’s your instant reaction when you saw the trade?
When I first saw the trade pop up, I was just excited that Cam Johnson was gone. That was my initial response and then I thought about it and processed it a little more and I was like, that’s a lot of money. Michael Porter Jr. I’ve been going back and forth on the trade. I was editing the episode and I feel like I missed a couple points. Like, why do both teams make this trade? Why do the Nets trade a 40% three-point shooter who’s beloved in their organization? They cash in on an asset that’s probably at its highest value. You’re not going to get much more back than this. I I would think if CJ would have gotten hurt, it loses value. If you let him play out the year, he has one year left. He’s becomes an expiring. You’re not going to get much back for that. The Nets find a perfect scenario to get a long-term asset and they wind up getting the better player. Of course, they get the better player in the deal because of Michael Porter Jr.’s contract. Porter Jr. is two years younger than CJ, fits the Nets timeline a lot better, and is probably more dynamic than CJ in the Net’s offense. For the Nuggets, they get some well needed cap space while still getting a shooter who could help them contribute and help them kind of negate the loss of Michael Porter Jr. So, Michael Porter Jr. is 2 years younger than CJ, but he’s going to make 38 million this year. That works out to about 24% 25% of the cap. CJ was going to be in the line of 20 million. So, the Nets have pretty much added about 17 million onto their cap, and the reward for that is getting that 2032 firstrounder from Denver. Are you disappointed that we didn’t get more back from CJ considering that we were looking at the Bane deal and we saw all those picks going out to Memphis and we were comparing the numbers and we both saw numbers are pretty much the same. Michael Porter Jr. and CJ numbers are pretty much the same. Is this an underwhelming return?
No. M like Michael Porter Jr. It I I I get the stats are the same and people are going to argue that Michael Porter Junior’s numbers aren’t as good because he gets to play with the you know the best distributor in the game. He gets to play in one of the most free flowing offenses in basketball. But he’s a better b he’s a better rebounder. He’s a better slasher. He scores better without the basketball. He’s someone you can build an offense around. You can’t build an offense around Cam Johnson. He’s just going to stand in the wing and shoot threes at a 40% clip, which is good, but that’s all he does. Michael Porter Jr. can stand there and shoot threes just as well as as Cam Johnson can. So Cam Johnson’s going to give you a lot more, and he’s a guy that you can build an offense around. Um, I think there’s upside in Michael Porter Jr. I I think when he’s given the focal point of the offense, which I think he’ll have for a lot of the season, he can do a lot more. He’s a lot more capable than Cam Johnson. I don’t think Cam Johnson’s value gets any higher than it is right now. Who knows if he gets hurt next year and the value completely shits the bed. So, I guess this this was the right time when we’re making starting lineups and looking at the roster. We have to put Michael Porter Jr. starting at small forward, right?
I I would say so, but then what do you do with Zire? I mean, I guess I I was going to kind of ask
Zire Z’s going to take the starting job over Michael Porter Jun. Oh, I’m saying. Can you start both? My question was, can you start both of them at the three four? Who’s the three? Who’s the four? I’m in that particular situation.
That’s a Maybe you put That’s a good point. Maybe you can put him at the four.
Having him and Cam Thomas in the same offense. It’s going to be a challenge for Jordy. I’ll just leave it at that. It’s going to It’s going to be a challenge. Neither one of those guys really like to pass the ball.
Is Michael Porter Jr. the first option or second option?
That’s a great question. Um I I mean, that’s a great question. I I think he’s going to be they’re excited to have him. Would I make him the first option? I don’t know. Is he going to be the first option? I think he is because I I think my instinct here is that he’s going to be here longer than Cam Thomas’s.
Whoa.
They’re excited to have him like or they’re going to trade him. No. Like I think they want to keep him for two years and beyond. I don’t see Cam Thomas being here two years and beyond. I I think they’re going to try to get Cam on a team friendly deal and then look to and then and then look to trade him. And I I’m wearing a Cam a Cam Thomas jersey. I’m not a C. I’m just That’s what I foresee.
How does getting Michael Porter Jr. affect the rookies? Does it affect them at all in your mind? I would imagine Drake Pal is going to get less minutes now, right? Like I I saw Drake Pal as the first guy off the bench in a lineup that had um Clowny at the four and Zier at the three and then Drake Pal’s the first guy off the bench. That’s going to take a backseat now. Um and you still got to get Whitehead minutes. So now where you playing all these guys? I I don’t like it for the development of of Drake Pal, which is the guy that the draft there’s a lot of upside in him.
I’m excited to see Michael Porter Jr. get some catch and shoot looks and I think he’s going to fit in pretty well.
I could argue that either way like it’s either going to work great or it’s going to be a disaster, right? Because he’s a ball dominant guy and now he’s the guy and how does that work with camp? Are they fighting each other for the ball? There’s a lot of qu it could work and I’m hoping Jord is the guy that can make this work. You last year the the the offense was like so primitive because there was no who could create their own shot, right? Especially when Cam got hurt. It’s like it was just a bunch of penetrating pitch and three-point hunting. It’s like this is a really bad offense schematically. The dynamic there is going to be interesting. It could work or it could fail. And I think if it’s if it fails, I think Cam’s the guy that’s going to go because he’s easier to trade and I don’t think they value him that much. The importance, at least for me, for Michael Porter Jr. is going to be the spacing. You’re going to have a lot of a lot of rookies coming in who have shooting issues. Clax we know is not a shooter. So spacing is going to be a huge thing going forward. And let’s face it, last year CT for the games that he did play could have been double teamed every night and the Nets not be able to do anything. Now we at least have a legitimate option, at least a good second option that will be able to take a little pressure off CT or whoever may be in the lineup at the time. I I think that’s probably one of the more important things when we’re talking about Michael Porter Jr. I I don’t see him being part of the Nets next winning team. I think this is a two-year thing and the contract comes in. When it’s done, it’s done and the Nets wind up using that cap space for something else. What if he is 24 and eight the next two years? You still don’t think they’re going to try to keep him? Like what if he does pan out to be that player? I’m not saying he’s I’m just hypothetically if he does. You don’t you don’t think they’re going to keep him? Of course, if he’s an asset, he’s an asset.
That’s I think that’s what they’re I think what that’s what they’re banking on, right? Like I think he’s the first step along with the rookies in that rebuild. I I I think like if you ask Marks, he’s our veteran who’s still in his prime 27. We have him, Jaor, Drake Pal, T. We have all these guys and him and this is the next generation. I I view
We’ll have to see what happens, man. Uh the offseason is still so young and the Nets use a significant chunk of their cap by putting in this move. I think they might have enough to make one more big move. Just making a prediction. What do you think the next move is for the Nets and Marks? I
I’m looking at the pool of free agents and I I I don’t know. Are they going to trade Claxton and bring in some more salary for Claxton? I I think that’s may be what they bring in an expiring deal for Claxton like Gabe Vincent. Uh bring in expiring money. I don’t think they’re gonna make another big splash. If you’re asking if they’re going to bring in Kaminga or something like that,
no, that’s out. I I don’t think it’s gonna I I think this was their big splash. I think they got to resign Cam and then we’re talking about just salary fillers from here on out.
I I I think that’s fair. I I think they might have one more move. I think it’s going to be more of like a salary dump and we get another pick or two back. But winding this down. Give me your grade on this trade. I’m going to give it an A minus. And it’s only an A minus. It’s only the minus because it is a salary concern. It is a bit of a swing, right? Like he this could miss, but on its merits, I like the upside of it. I’m giving it an A minus.
I’m gonna give it a a B+. I’m going to give it a B+.
I wish the first runner was a little sooner, but then it’s Denver, Joic, and then you wind up getting it like pick number 26 or 28. So, I I I guess I I see the vision with this deal. I will say that. I see the vision with this deal.
I think we we we’ve moved you a little bit. You I thought you were going to say like a C or a C minus. A B+. I think I I’m I’m more than I can more than live with a B+ from Pete on this trade. I’m I’m glad you’re you’re coming along on this. Uh because you know I was thinking about it. They need to they need to have some cap this year eaten up. So you do that and then the following year it’s 40 million. It’s a $40 million expiring and maybe he’s good, maybe he’s not. Whatever happens there, the Nets have options. If they want to just get the cap space, let it expire. He’s a good player, maybe you make a trade. you know, maybe he’s really good and he winds up becoming, you know, a staple in Brooklyn and you wind up wanting to resign him. There’s just so many options that you could go with this. And with this whole thing of fluidity with Shawn Marks, it really keeps you guessing like what to do next and, you know, where the next shot is really coming from.
I don’t necessarily feel that way anymore. I I feel like with this like there’s something like we’re we’re finally building something. We’re not just spinning our wheels. We have a direction now.
Let’s get some promo out here for you, Gary.

  1. I’ll give the trade a B for now… imagine if Traore or Demin pops and we win like 40 games in the weak east cause Jordis plan works and Thomas and this guy have career numbers 😂

  2. I don't think there will be a problem with MPJ and Cam sharing the scoring load. I don't know how many people noticed that Cam seemed to unlock his passing game towards the end of the season. Also the two of them will be surrounded by guys who look to pass

  3. We only got 1 legit scorer. Yo do not know what you getting in MPJ. Dude has Broke Back Ben injury.

MPJ will be salary filler for star Marks targeting. Just watch.

  4. Die hard nuggets fan here. Watched every game. Hes not an aggressive rebounder and he stands around a lot. He’s not who you guys think he is lol.

  5. mpj is a great shooter and a great guy. Nets might be in great shape with him.
DEN didnt give mpj enough space and mpj (I wanted him to) didn`t assert himself enough.

mpj is a hard worker, great character, now he was the healthiest nugget for 2 last seasons…
right setup (2nd option, offense focused on screening for him), right role… mpj will be an all-star in no time.
And… if you have a good defense coach to make him better… oh my.

good luck BKN… Im a den fan, but you got a good one here.

  6. Also major thing to take into consideration MPJ final year which is next season is ONLY $12 million guaranteed. that makes his contract highly movable if something goes bad

  7. Nets just need to find a traditional back to the basket bigman. I would like for them to slide Claxton to power forward then sign Dwight Howard.

  8. Lol…you can tell this was a fair trade because the Nuggets fans are all convinced Cam Johnson is a huge upgrade, and Nets fans think MPJ is better, with untapped upside. Well, you guys do anyway. I think the days of hoping you can “build an offense around Michael Porter Jr” are long gone, and Cam is by far the better playmaker. But worth it for Net getting an equivalent guy on a bloated expiring contract you can use in a star trade next summer. And the real value is a 2032 pick, when Jokic is 37.

  9. I’ll take mpj over 4 picks in 2047 sorry but I like watching basketball- A+ for me fyi I’ve survived the 12-70 season, letting Kmart walk , trading rj, trading Kidd, trading brook , trading kd and ki

  10. As a Nuggets fan, I wish the best for MPJ and really interested in seeing him in a bigger role. Would love if he could push his ppg up to 25ppg. I think Cam’s ppg can go up to 20+ playing with Jokic

  11. Anyone who thinks MPJ is a better player than CJ needs their head checked. MPJ Is a $40M spot up shooter, he rebounds better than CJ as he should because he's 6'10 but will see if that's also because JOKIC & AG were boxing out their men, we know NO ONE Boxs out their man on the Nets, so I expect MPJ Rebounding numbers to go down.

CJ can put the ball on the floor. He has a high Basketball IQ, He can playmake, and he's a movement shooter. Initially, I thought it was a great deal, but with more time to think about it, the Nets got FLEECED! They traded their best player for a MASSIVE NEGATIVE Contract for a Single FRP 7 years from now. Sure, that pick has the potential to be in the lotto with Jokic being 37, but it also could be in the mid teens – 20's because Jokic's game doesn't rely on athleticism.

I LOVE this deal for Cam Johnson, he deserves to play winning basketball and playing alongside the best player in the world should help him accomplish winning a title. It also doesn't hurt The Net's tank, I don't have to worry about MPJ single-handedly winning games like I did this season with CJ.

  12. Nuggets fan here – I love MPJ and I am sad to see him get traded. However, this trade made it possible not just to get Cam Johnson, but also to deepen the bench with solid players.
