It’s Official…
It is official. After weeks and months of speculating, going over rumors, trying to trying to follow the breadcrumbs to who it is the Dallas Mavericks would select to be our point guard until Kyrie Irving returns. We finally got the answer in the first hour of free agency opening. And no, it wasn’t Lonzo Ball. He got traded. No, it wasn’t Colin Ston. He also got traded. Unfortunately, it wasn’t Chris Paul as he’s probably going to be in LA with the Clippers. But it was D’Angelo Russell, the dark horse that was only reported for about a week and a half. But it was all but reported that the deal was already done and put in place for about a week and all we had to do was wait until free agency started. So in this video, we’re going to take a look at D’Angel Russell. How well did he play last year? What were the reports around him coming to Dallas as well as his contract and what does this mean for the team moving forward? But how’s it going everybody? My name is Marcel Martin. This is Mavericks Digest, bringing you the latest news on everything Mavericks related. And before we get started with today’s video, we’re currently sitting at 21,392 subs, getting very close to 22K. I can almost taste it. But if you want to be up to date on everything Mavericks related all summer long as we wait until the start of the season, make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss out on a single thing that we do. But it was reported heavily ever since the end of the season that the Dallas Mavericks were looking for a point guard. Kyrie Irving will be out till early February, late January, most likely all-star break. Well, after All-Star break is when we should see Kyrie Irving return and the Dallas Mavericks would be very, very weak at the point guard position. Now, of course, there’s Spencer Denwitty as well as Dante Exom, two options that we had last year that we could obviously call back. We also have Brandon Williams who is on a very team-friendly contract that he earned rightfully so last season when we’re dealing with all those injuries and we’re almost about to forfeit games, but we need to make sure we had a good point guard rotation. Of course, there’s also an AI Marshall who does a very good job at ball handling. But if you’ve got the roster spot, if you got the salary cap, why not go out there and make a swing? And it was finally reported within the first hour free agency on who it is the Dallas Mavericks were going to get. And it was D’Angelo Russell per Shams. He he dropped the tweet saying, “Breaking free agent guard D’Angel Russell has agreed on a 2-year $13 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks. Sources tell ESPN Mavericks officials and the CAA co-heads of basketball, Austin Brown and Aaron Mintz and Antonio Russell reached the new contract after free agency began. So, it was a little bit while until we got the news. A lot of people were expecting it the minute that free agency started. We get all these news. Things were kind of quiet. Shams was very slow to dropping these bombs. A lot of people, myself included, were missing woge as he was always just backtoback with these tweets. But we got the news. D’Angel Russell will be a Dallas Maverick. And from the comment section in my last few D’Angel Russell videos, I can tell some of you guys are not sold on it. And I just want to reiterate that whoever this person was supposed to be, whether it was D’Angel Russell, Chris Paul, Drew Holiday, Malcolm Brogden, even whoever we were going to get, had to be someone that can just hold it down. The way I look at it is, are they at the same level or better than Brandon Williams? I’d also say that a lot of us would agree that Brandon Williams could have filled that spot. We would have been fine. Well, if that’s the case, if D’Angel Russell is at the level or better than Brandon Williams, then what’s the problem? I think we’re in a pretty good spot. But let’s take a look at how well D’Angel Russell played last year. Last year, D’Angel Russell put up 12.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, point4 blocks, one steal, 1.9 turnovers, two fouls per game, while averaging 39% from the floor and 31% from three. Now, I know those shooting percentages abysmal. It’s probably worse than Tim Hardaway Jr. on his worst day. But if you’ve been watching Dandel Russell, if you know anything about him, last year was definitely a down year. Playing in LA does things to certain players. I mean, we saw what happened to Russell Westbrook. Point guards don’t really survive in LA or at least maybe around LeBron James. I don’t know what it is, but D’Angelo Russell is a good point guard. He can facilitate. I mean, five assists on a down year. I’m totally fine with that. 12 points, albeit on bad efficiency. He knows how to get his own bucket. He can create for others. He’s a very good shot creator. He knows his role and although you could argue in other situations, he didn’t play that well. But he’s coming to a team where there is some familiarity cuz he just played in LA with Max Christie as well as Anthony Davis. And while he was playing with them, the numbers look really, really good. So, what would it look like if if someone like D’Angel Russell came to the Dallas Mavericks playing alongside Klay Thompson, Derek Lively, PJ Washington, Cooper Flag, Anthony Davis, all these guys that we have. It would be structure. We’re not living or dying by D’Angelo Russell. We have a role for him. Fit that role. Go out and do it. We have scorers. We have shooters. We have great defenders. We have shot blockers. We have rim protectors. We have rim runners. We have got guys that can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. We need facilitators. We need good ball handlers. We need a floor general. And again, D’Angelo Russell is D’Angelo Russell. He will come with his own flaws. He is not perfect. I’m sure there’ll be many games where we just scratch our heads and get very mad because the ice in his veins melted. It ran cold. Maybe hot. It ran hot. The ice melted. It may not be peak D’Angelo Russell, but I truly do believe they’ll be exactly what the Dallas Mavericks need. We don’t need a flashy star as our starting point guard. I know a lot of people wanted players like Kobe White. And let me remind you, whoever this person was supposed to be was only temporary. You don’t want to trade away permanent pieces for a temporary fix. And another few interesting reports we definitely want to take a look at is this one that came out earlier today that a 2-year deal for for the Dallas Mavericks around the 12 million range is widely expected for D’Angel Russell. However, Stein did add that that the Mavs are expected to explore the trade market for Omax Prosper to help retain Dante Exom, which is very, very interesting. We did get those reports during draft night on both days. The Mavericks were very, very heavy in trade talks trying to get another pick in that draft. And the two players that were being shocked were Jane Hardy and Omax. We’ve also reported heavily on this channel, just earlier today actually, how the Dallas Mavericks have mutual interest in Dante Exom. Dante gets injured a lot, but Dante plays good defense. And if defense wins championships, then why not just see what we can do to try to bring Dante back? Unfortunately, I’m hearing absolutely nothing about Spencer Denwy. I don’t think he’s going to return. Not sure if a team picks him up. Maybe he retires. Don’t know. Maybe we pull some strings and we stretch wave Dwight Pal to bring back Deny. I I don’t know. Don’t know what we’re doing with Denwy. But I do know that with Dante Exom, there is mutual interest. And if the team can make a trade to get rid of Omax to create a roster spot, then yeah, expect to see the Dallas Mavericks give a veteran minimum to Dante Exom to bring him back and help us with that point guard situation. It was also told to me through trusted sources that right now as I’m recording this video, there are trade talks being done with the Dallas Mavericks. Nico Harrison is trying to make this happen. So this report right here, you don’t got to take it with a grain of salt. You can take it from me. This is something that is being explored. The Dallas Mavericks are definitely trying to get a trade done. Wouldn’t be surprised if it happens while I’m recording, but they’re trying to get a trade done because they want to bring back Dante Exom or whoever the the Mavericks trademax for. We’re getting back a player that, oh, you’re better than Dante. We can just keep you instead. But another thing that we definitely want to take a look at right here is that the Dallas Mavericks projected starting lineup for opening night next season. You got D’Angelo Russell, Klay Thompson, Cooper Flag, Andy Davis, Derek Lively. Now, I’d probably change this up. You probably have D’Angel Russell alongside Klay Thompson, Cooper Flag, Andy Davidson. I just swap out Derek Lively for Daniel Gaffford. Where PJ is in this lineup. Don’t know. We’re not sure if Klay Thompson getting pushed to the bench. We don’t know what that looks like. We do know that PJ is okay with playing alongside Cooper Flag. There’s no jealousy or animosity there. But not only is that gonna be our starting lineup, but how about our second unit where we got Brandon Williams, Max Christy, Naji Marshall, PJ, and Daniel Gaffford as my five off the bench torching second units in this new era of salary cap and second aprons and and fines and fees that no billionaire wants to really pay for. The one thing that is working for these teams that are winning championships is depth. We just saw the Oklahoma City Thunder win with a very good deep team filled with low contract players that that it’s not going to affect their bottom dollar next season where they can keep competing. The year before that with the Celtics, they had a lot of good role players like Luke Cornett and Sam Hower. Good role players as well as Derek Lavy as well. And I’m sorry, Derek Lavy, Derek White, Drew Holiday, and a couple other good role players as well. The key to winning nowadays is having depth. And I do think that someone like Daniel Russell adds to the depth. And although it’s just a two-year contract, who knows? We may we may get to love D’Angelo Russell and he may end up being a Dallas Maverick for a little bit longer. Let me know what you think in the comment section down below. How excited are you that we have D’Angelo Russell that we actually have a pretty decent point guard that can help us till Kyrie comes back or do you don’t want him here? You’re upset. You hate it. You don’t want to be a fan of the team no more. You wanted Lonzo Ball more than anything and getting D’Angelo Russell is like a slap in the face. Let me know what you think in the comments section down below. We could have a conversation about it. But that’s all I got for guys today. Thank you for watching the video. Make sure you check out our Twitter and Discord links in the description below. And as always, y’all take care. Drink water.

LETS GOOOO #MFFL
Good sign
mavs officially won the trade
GRREEAAT!
This Move is Awesome D Lo is legit and many Mavs Fans will love him
Nico putting the 2023 Lakers together again
Dlo is not legit
Dlo 😂
COWBOYS 🤠 SUPERBOWL 🎉
I approve of this signing.
Exum is much better but it's just his health. Other than that I like d-lo temporarily
It changes everything!
He's a legit back up. And Brandon Williams will push him for minutes.
@Mavericks Digest thank you for keeping it real. There are a lot of fans or just people in general who don’t want whoever we sign but don’t have any real suggestions. It’s time to put together our team and move on.
He also has a knack for throwing Lobs. It's just a question can he earn Kidd's trust to control the offense in a consistent manner and trust what the defense shows. He shows why he is a lottery pick with his talents just about consistency at this point for him. Cool to have him aboard officially.
I hope this works out i think he will be a good fit till kyrie gets back with the players we already have this team is gonna be really good
I really wanted Russel Westbrook 😢
If Lonzo was a FA I would understand the frustration on that end but he had 2 years left on the Bulls. It takes the Bulls to agree on a trade and no means should you oversell for Lonzo.
I like D/Lo… he can facilitate & playmake.. create his own shot & be consistent & or be very hot from 3.. he tries really hard to play defense & has gotten better & better each year recently.. and he will most definitely try & get everyone involved.. team player!! This is a good deal
Ima be honest, I didn’t like what I saw from D Lo last season at all. HOWEVER a lot of similar players have a track record of playing much better once they get in the Mavs system so I’ll be open minded and hopefully he helps weather the storm until Ky comes back. Just hope J Kidd gives B Will some minutes too!
Omg the description on this video is hilarious!!! 😂.. legit shooting 🤦🏻♂️. 28% was it?
Colin way better jazz trade him for nothing Mavs felt asleep on this one
nico masterclass, mavs 2026 champs, but on the real we miss your streams man. Hope all is well in ya life big dog, can't wait for summer league, nembhard and coop gone RUN shit.
Let’s gooooo I’ve been a dlo fan since that iconic 2018 season in Brooklyn
Reunion with AD! Let’s see how it works out
I still want Brandon Williams to get more mins & develop
I dont think russell is dependable to hold it down until Kyrie gets back however he is cheap but defense is trash. I would love to keep Exum for his defense
Mavericks Digest must have missed the memo where Kidd said he wants to play Flagg at the point. And frankly, you are dealing with a potential super star, he should play the point all year long, from the very start.
Am I the only person who doesn't want to roster spot held up by Dante exum not saying he isn't talented but availability is more important than anything with a roster spot
I think DLo is the perfect fit. Loved watching him go off in LA
Nah what it is the people that say negative things about the Mavericks team as a whole including fake fans that ain't real mav fans trying to get us too give up our players if you notice everybody in the league want gafford our pj but at same time saying we trash we have the number one pick kryie coming back mid February our march we signed Russell i like he nice hes gonna help in a big way an we still gonna make more moves they even throwing trade bait LeBron on the mavs they know we have a real contender they trying to break our team up they even want our coach to leave everybody we our the real threat too the thunder in the west they know it
You can almost taste it? ⏸️
DLO and AD will be Special but Brandon Williams will prove to be a star ✨🎩🐇🐰 ripping up the lanes dropping 3s 🏀 taking up the most minutes at PG
People forget that Dlo also played with Klay Thompson with Warriors.
Hey Marcel thanks for all you do! How do we keep Kai Jones? Would they ever get rid of Powell for him. He I think will be great and worried they loose him!!!
It's a good signing if he can rebound to his old form. He had a horrendous season last year, that's why he's in this price range right now, hope that was an aberration and not a sign that he's washed. Hope he snitches on Nico
Hell naw he not good at all we can pass on him
I feel like Quentin wouldve left for more money in the off season so the caleb martin trade kind of makes sense
Coach said Coop is going to bring the ball up. Dlo is the perfect guy to spell Coop and help his development in this role, just saying!
Great Signing Overall! Lets Go! MAVS!!
dlo sucks wtf
DLo MVP season coming?
Cooper Flagg is Our Flashy Star at POINT GOD. DLo is Not a Starter
I just hope we keep Kai Jones
D Loading is a good pick up, he is not a starter anymore but off the bench he will be fantastic! Uncle Drew will be a good mentor for him to help grow.
This is amazing. Dlo, Kai, Klay, AD … this team's championship window was 2015-2020.
Nico forgot the part about these guys having true alphas carrying them in Stef and LeBron.
Eh, he played with Kobe a little. The few games I’ve seen he’s looked fine. I’m open to seeing how he looks with the team.
@Mavericks Digest DLo had a down year for many reasons. JJ Redick had told him he needed to be more passive than what he already was. Likely due to him heading out anyways. And in Brooklyn, the team wanted to play more of their young players more to tank for the draft. Didn’t really need DLo to be any good. When DLo played at least 30 minutes, he averaged 18 and 6 on 44/40% shooting
