Are We All Wrong About Alex Sarr?
[Music] sometimes the league just gets players totally wrong and I think that might be the case with Washington Wizards rookie Alex Sar just hear me out leading up to the 2013 draft Giannis was a relatively unknown prospect while his potential was clearly off the charts teams didn’t know what to make of him at 610 205 lbs Giannis could dribble and pass so they listed him as a small forward nba draft.net spelled his name completely wrong and compared him to Nick Patun so after the Bucks drafted him they played him at small forward and had him shooting threes during Giannis’ rookie year over 28% of his shot attempts came from beyond the three-point line the highest of his career this past year he took less than 5% of his shots from such distance what I’m trying to get at is that sometimes players are evaluated when they enter the league and are used according to how the player they were compared to when they were drafted is used in Alexar’s case that’s guys like Jiren Jackson Jr and Evan Moble in some ways the comparison definitely makes sense at 7 ft with a 74 wingspan Zahar is already a menace on the defensive end not only is he an impact shot blocker he’s a rare breed that also has the mobility to guard quicker players on the perimeter this chart here compares SAR to a small handful of the league’s best defenders right now guys that anchor their teams BAM JJ Miles Turner and Mullen all stats coming from their rookie years the further up they are on the chart the more shots they block while they’re on the court the further they are to the right the more steals they get star outpaced all of them during his rookie year aside from Jackson the 2023 Rookie of the Year he’s also a very good onball defender for a rookie but not in the ways you might think though he’s an incredible shot blocker those are actually often come off the weak side as the help defender tar’s weakest point on defense at this point comes within 5 ft of the basket where he still often gets outmuscled by bigger players that’ll likely change in time but where he excels is further away from the basket among setters he held his opponent to very low field goal percentages from 5 to 9 ft and past the three-point line thanks to his quickness and coordination at his side interestingly the five centers that we are comparing fared on the exact opposite ends of the spectrum in rebounding and in blocking as rookies sar was the second weakest rebounder during his rookie year only to JJ however he was much better on the offensive glass when he used his quickness and instincts to grab loose balls on offense is where things get interesting sar had a very high usage rate for a rookie and was horribly inefficient especially for a big man this chart shows that he trailed all the other elite defensive bigs in field goal percentage and effective field goal percentage by a lot thar shot under 40% from the field this year which is historically inexcusable for a man who was 7 ft tall however shot selection definitely played a factor thar shot tons of his shots from three this year over five shots per game that’s more than double Jackson who shot the second most threes as a rookie of all comparable bigs and more than four times as many as Mo zar hit those three-pointers at just about 31% accuracy far from elite but not bad at all for a 7ft tall 19-year-old rookie who blocked a shot and a half per game actually very impressive his mechanics look really good too sar is highly skilled
spinning using the left hand good move by the rookie if we look even closer we can look at this chart which explains what proportion of player shots they took from each part of the floor as well as how effective they were from each of those spots star was the only one in the group that took less than 30% of his shots at the rim and considering his size he looked pretty uncomfortable finishing in traffic for a guy with his height and his athleticism you’d think he’d be pounding it down there with ease but he wasn’t zar was regularly adjusting his shot midair trying to lay it in and he had a worse field goal percentage in close than any other big did in their rookie year aside from Miles Turner from 3 to 10 ft that spot on the floor where guys like Jokic and Duncan used their skill and physicality to dominate and get easy buckets sar really struggled he looked very uncomfortable in that range shooting an abysmal 36% as mentioned though he looked better from mid-range and deep and is likely to improve there too aside from shooting from distance Alexar shocked a lot of fans with how good he was at passing as a rookie he assisted on nearly 14% of his team shots when he was on the floor even more than Bam and Moy during their rookie years i don’t know that passing was really in the scouting report when Star entered the league but he was dropping dimes all right so where am I going with all this here’s my take sar isn’t really a center he clearly can play center since he can defend the interior but that isn’t where he’s going to best develop in the NBA he’s a poor defensive rebounder he shies away from contact around the rim and he wasn’t particularly good at defending his man down low however he was great at defending the perimeter looks good shooting from distance and was a surprisingly good passer i think this could be a case of you’re 7 foot tall and you block shots so we’re playing you at center type situation if Sar was 3 in shorter he’d profile way more as a versatile wing play this chart shows Sar’s shooting profile breakdown compared to a different list of players lengthy wing Jaden McDaniel Brandon Ingram Lowry Marketing and Jabari Smith Jr it’s definitely a weird list of different guys that play different statistically but that’s the thing i think Sar is very much his own thing if you look at the chart his shot selection is much more similar to these guys than it was in the big offensively Sar profiles most identically to Jabari Smith Jr of Houston both spent around 30% of their time as finishers at the rim both largely avoided the tough bloater in between zone both occasionally shot mid-range shots both were high volume three-point shooters and both of them had the vast majority of their shots especially from three assisted by other players meaning they weren’t really creating shots off the dribble but aside from shooting Sar was incrementally better than Smith in his rookie year zar was slightly better at rebounding and stealing the ball but he was significantly better at passing while not turning the ball over that much more he also blocked nearly double as many of his opponent’s shots undoubtedly a superior prospect another look is Sar versus Brandon Ingram statistically the guys play very differently sar loves to shoot from three and had the vast majority of his shots assisted by other players meanwhile even as a rookie Ingram was more comfortable putting the ball on the floor and creating his own shot especially from mid-range but there are some similarities as well remember Ingram as a rookie played for a really bad Lakers team and took a lot of shots both guys have long wingspans and were inefficient ingram has become largely more efficient since then giving hope to Sar but where they parallel is the passing even as a rookie Ingram had an assist percentage above 10% sars is even higher sar could really develop into something special a defensive anchor that is a wing player and an advanced passer that can also pitch and shoot the three sounds like a damn good player to me thanks for watching let me know what you think about Alexar in the comment section and don’t forget to subscribe

Let's never compare Sarr to Giannis again. Ok thank you.
Do you need the horrible background music to be louder than your voice? Do we need the music at all? (No.)
Im a mavs fan, and honestly, before we got the #1 pick I remember thinking I’d rather be a Wizards fan than this. Alex Sarr is the reason I came to that decision, he was the #2 pick and could have gone #1. I think he will be JJJ with more offense which makes him a future allstar you can build around.
Sarr should never leave the weight room. He could really mirror Giannis with his potential. If he was bigger and stronger he could abuse people with his athleticism but he has to learn to love contact.
Saar can soar
I don't think he's being miscast. I think the reason he avoided the hawks Is because they have something to play for and wouldn't give him the developmental freedom and pathway the wizards are giving him. To be able to shoot threes and such. Even if he's inefficient he needs the reps.
He gets to play make and he gets to grab and go like giannis and chet. We are not sweating the results but are letting him work out the kinks of his game.
A lot of his issues at the rim both defensively and offensively is strength and will go away in time. Like Chet who played center initially he can be dropped down to the pf slot if he has the ball skills. Like giannis who under Jason Kidd, he gets to play make. People laughed when he made Giannis a play maker. Jason Kidd is doing the same with Cooper.
I think the wizards have an exact plan where they are not stressing the kid about getting it right now. But work on things. One day the skills will become more efficient. Shot selection more dialed in and you will be strong enough to do more things at the rim. At that point he will be capable of handling the four or five like all those players who are his comps like KG, Giannis, JJJ, Evan Mobley, Chet , AD and Bam
My headcannon is Dawkins and co are content with waiting to acquire a long-term piece in the traditional drop-coverage, defensive rebounding archetype. It allows Sarr to build his confidence and experience playing in lineups as a more traditional 5. Down the line once DC transitions to contending and makes a Hartenstein-esque acquisition, Sarr’s ability to play with a traditional 5 on the wing and as a 5 in smaller lineups will provide elite lineup versatility in playoff scenarios. Because I’d agree that his peak role is that of an ideal transition threat, elite play finisher in the halfcourt, whether that’s cutting/rolling or popping out for a catch and shoot 3, and as a secondary or tertiary creator in DHOs where he can use that valuable passing touch or if the midrange face up/back to the basket game ever fully develops we could be looking at a very special player. Because his defense is very easy to project. An elite roaming shot-blocker that can make a scary frontcourt with shades of the Cavs twin-towers. And hopefully the ability to serve as an average drop coverage rim-protector in certain situations. All while retaining an incredible level of versatility defending smaller positions off of switches and on the perimeter for a 7-footer with his wingspan. His peak is like a supersized Siakam that can moonlight as a traditional center for lineup versatility
Same thing happened to Sabonis. They used him as a catch and shoot/corner 3 player his rookie year in OKC but then he goes to Indiana and suddenly people saw how good his passing was.
More wizards content please!!!
I hope the wizards see this and let the man thrive at the 4
As a Wizards fan it’s great to see sports media start to notice what we are doing. By the end of this season he was a completely different player than he was at summer league. Great video my man, excited to see what you do in the future.
Low key..under the radar..wizards got some young guns ..this team will be good really soon
I’ve always thought that Sarr was a small forward trapped in a center’s body. His unique fluidity for a 7fter enables his dribbling and back-to-the-basket game in ways that other centers can’t imagine. Because of his height, he’s going to be pigeonholed into the traditional center shooting diet of close to the basket shots and threes exclusively, but as he evolves we might see him blossom into a 7ft small forward who plays like Kevin Durant on offense and switches to Evan Mobley on defense. Sarr’s play style doesn’t really have a historical equivalent. The tricky part for the Wizards is allowing him the offensive and defensive freedom to be a wing and center all at once.
Great video man. Sarr has been great for us. I don’t like that he’s not around the rim but I definitely think he’s playing the wrong position. Until we get a true big so he can play the 4 spot, he’s gotta stay in the gym and be more physical. Looking forward to his sophomore season
Can't wait to watch him this coming season and see how he spent the offseason
Nobody watches Wizards games so folks don't know, but it is seriously a pleasure watching Sarr pass the ball. There haven't been many 7 footers that I've seen in 35 years of watching basketball who drop dimes like him.
Bro this is high quality video with so much info. I'm subscribing
Based on how he played last summer, he was barely good enough to be in the G-League, so he did improve dramatically, but he is still a project on a team with no real centers.
Great video. Love the content and research you put into this. Keep it up!
You did an awesome job putting together this video with highlights and stats. Can you do 1 for Jalen Johnson?
He’s being overlooked big time on a Hawks team that could win the East
bro called JJJ the '23 ROY instead of DPOY
Got me subscribed! Keep up the good work brother!
Nez Olympics France is winning gold
Cool content on a cool dude! GO WIZ!🪄🧙♂️
"shy's" at the rim???? Come on guys. Please. It's shies lol.
Good breakdown though
Defensively. He reminds me of mobley and bam. He can be that level of a defender

that analysis is fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Enjoyed the content, did not enjoy the music. It was too much at times
Adetokunbo is Giannis' last name with Nigerian spelling and was his legal last name until right before the draft
The difference between him and Giannis is the mindset. Giannis is hungry and devoted for greatness. I don’t think that’s alex sarr

they low key spelled giannis’s surname correctly in a naija way in the beginning
This was a very nice take on Alex Star. I still want to see more of him play. Especially in year 3.
Wizards fan here. I was waiting for you to give a generically inaccurate assessment on Sarr’s game but it didn’t happen. Spot-on with Sarr’s rookie profile.

Dope and accurate video, man !
I've always thought Sarr was less a center than a strech forward. Of course he'll get bigger and stronger, and he and the coaching staff will also develop him and find his sweet spots, give him confidence and moreover, get good guys around him. I can't believe he's just about to start his 2nd year !
He and Bilal are the cornerstones of the team. Bub was great last year, Kyshawn promising, and now Tre is about to shine too. Let's start to believe again for a bright future for this Wizard franchise 🔥
Nic Batum!!??
Wasn’t a the top prospect lol
You put numbers to my intuition about Sarr 👍 After Wizards got 6th pick, I was hoping they’d take Maluach and start them both, with Sarr at the 4. Oh well though, maybe Tre is amazing.
Wizards will pick swap with the suns this year and get a top 3 pick
