Philadelphia 76ers Summer League Preview Ft. VJ Edgecombe, Johni Broome & Justin Edwards

[Music] NBA summer league is here for the Philadelphia 76ers. And on today’s show, going to go through a full preview of the Sixers upcoming summer league, players that are on the roster, their full schedule with dates, times, and opponents, as well as some of the players I am most looking forward to watch when it comes to some of these summer league games. I am Jake Chipper. Welcome in 276ers now. Appreciate you taking time out of your day hanging out here with us on the show. Before we get into the full preview, I’m just curious how many of you are tapped in and dialed in with the NBA Summer League. Do you watch NBA Summer League every single season? Are you tuning in to all the games? Just the Sixers games? Just when the most popular rookies are playing? Let me know. Do you watch NBA Summer League? Why for yes, N for no? If you don’t, you should at least try to watch some of the Sixers games. They are very exciting and you get a little little bit of a preview as to what some of the rotation players could look like for Philadelphia, especially this season with uh some of the rookies and secondyear players they got on the roster. And speaking of the roster, Sixers releasing the entire summer league roster just the other day. This is the full thing from top to bottom. You’ll see at the top Justin Edwards, Autumn Bona, two secondyear players who are going to be very exciting to watch in summer league. You see the rookies, VJ Edgecomb, and Janiah Broom will of course be participating as well. Alex Reese, one of the two-way players for Philadelphia, played some real NBA minutes last year with all the injuries for the Sixers. Judah Mintz and Kev Aluma, you see both of those names in there. Both played with the Sixers summer league squad last year and had some really, really good moments. Um, there are some people banging the table for Luma to get a two-way deal last off season. He’ll be battling for one of those spots this offseason as the Sixers have two two-way players under contract. Need one more. So, a lot of these guys will be battling for that last two-way spot. Jaylen Hutchino was on a two-way with Philadelphia at the end of last year. Got Jaylen Slawson, Caleb Stone, Carowwell, Mark Armstrong, Villanova product, Andrew Funk, Landers Nollie I St. Thomas, one of the Sixers UDFA pickups, along with Hunter Salis, who the Sixers actually already signed to a two-way, so a UDFA guy that they like a lot, already giving a two-way contract. Ethan Almansa, another one of the UDFA pickups, Jack Clark and Stefon Teddorovich. Now, you’ll note that Igor Milichic Jr., one of the D6ers other UDFA pickups, is not on this list. He is rehabbing an injury, so he’s expected to join the team around training camp, uh, but will not be ready to play in the summer league, at least as of right now. There’s a chance that someone like Edwards or maybe even one of the rookies drops out and he ends up subbing in. But, uh, as of the the moment, not on the roster. Neither is Jared McCain obviously rehabbing from the meniscus injury. Thought maybe there was a chance he was going to play, but I think it makes sense not to risk it. Just hold him out and let him focus on the rehab. So, the Sixers once again will be taking part in the Salt Lake City Summer League before going to Vegas where every NBA team participates in the big summer league games. That’ll kick off tonight, Saturday, July 5th, against the Utah Jazz at 900 p.m. Eastern. Will Ace Bailey play in this game? Will Ace Bailey vers Philadelphia 76ers to kick off the summer league? Then you play the Thunder on July 7th, that game at 700 p.m. Eastern. And then you finish off Salt Lake City Summer League on July 8th against the Grizzlies. That game also at 7 PM Eastern. Just three games, sort of a warm-up, a tuneup uh before the Sixers and all the other squads in the NBA head over to Vegas. That begins on July 10th and they’ll kick things off on ESPN National Television at 10 p.m. Eastern against the San Antonio Spurs. Dylan Harper vers BJ Edgecomb. That should be an exciting one. Then July 12th against the Hornets, 6:30 p.m. Eastern. That one against Con against Conanal and the Charlotte Hornets. Then July 15th against Trey Johnson and the Washington Wizards. That one underway at 8:30 p.m. Eastern. And then July 16th hopefully against Cooper Flag and the Dallas Mavericks. There’s a chance Cooper Flag is not playing anymore by that point in the summer league. That one at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. And then of course the tournament playoff style games will get underway after that. It’ll all depend on how the Sixers fare in their first four summer league games, but those are all the scheduled games as of right now for Philadelphia. Some pretty high-profile summer league games against some of the other top rookies in the NBA. So, should be some very, very exciting basketball. Uh especially with some of the players we are going to get to see play in summer league. Got to start with the rookies, right? DJ Edgecomb, Janai Broom, two highprofile rookies. Of course, Edgecom being the third overall pick. Jana Broom being runner up to national player of the year, one of the best players in college basketball over the last couple of seasons. Obviously drafted in the second round, number 35 overall. Both of them playing and both of them going to see a lot of run in summer league and both exciting players that theoretically should be able to ball out and play well in summer league. And we’ll start with VJ Edgecom, who by all accounts has been turning heads in some of these summer league practices, showing off his athleticism and why he was drafted third overall with that special special trait that he has. TJ Dillio is the Sixers summer league head coach, a former Temple guard, played at Temple back in the day. His father was part of this organization as well for those of you who do recognize the name there. Uh he’s coached the summer league squad and this is what he had to say about BJ Edgecomb. I think in general smart player sees the floor well as you guys all know a threat to punch a gap at any time. So defenses have to respect that. I think he can be a really good pick guys, chase stuff like that. I think we’re keeping it pretty simple for everybody right now. We want early attacks. We want all that and he’s done a tremendous job of that so far. Of course, you know, with VJ being that number three overall pick, he’s gonna probably have a large workload and a large burden for Philadelphia in the summer league. In fact, reports are coming out and and VJ talked about this himself as well. And the coaches for the six summer league squad said that they’re going to work a lot more on VJ’s point guard skills and working with him more on the ball to develop that side of things in summer league because, you know, once you get to the NBA season, he’s practicing with the rest of the team. His role is going to be reduced. So take some time now to develop some of those skills that could really help improve his game. We know what he can do right now and that’s play defense, that’s play out the ball, cut to the basket, play in transition, but he could take his game to a whole new level if he does develop some of those true point guard skills. So I like that they’re taking the time now to really focus in on that and allow him to develop that aspect of his game. Jai Broom also raved about VJ Edgecomb during summer league practices. He’s a great player, obviously. He gets downhill whenever he wants and he’s scary when he gets downhill. He’s very athletic. He’s a playmaker. Makes the guys around him better as well on the defensive end. He’s going to pick you up and he’s going to cause havoc. So, a lot of praise there from BJ’s fellow rookie in Janiah Broom. And speaking of Janiah Broom, let’s get to him next because I think he should play really well in a setting like Summer League. gonna be a lot of guys he’s playing against now that he probably played against in college where of course he dominated. And look, when you’re going against this level of competition, I wasn’t the biggest and I’m still not the biggest fan of this pick for Philadelphia. I had my concerns about his game translating to the NBA. But at least in the summer league, I think it’s a great opportunity for him to play well in a setting in which he should be able to play very well with his experience, with his skill set again against guys that he’s probably played against before and has had success before. And six summer league coach TJ Dillio also spoke a little bit on what he’s seen from Broom early on in the process saying he’s got physicality. He plays hard. He’s got a nose for the ball really on both ends of the court. Offensive rebounding on offense and his instincts are good. And what’s good about him is he’s a guy that can play hard, play smart, play with instincts a little bit. So he’s had a good combination of both. He’s had a great career. He’s been successful at every step he’s been at. I’m happy to have him in summer league and try to get a little bit here and then of course integrate into the organization. So, a lot of what you just heard there from the Sixers summer league head coach, which we talked about on the show a lot that he does have. It’s a physicality, right? A a big physical strong player. He always does play hard. The one thing, you know, I’ll give credit to to Broom about this is, you know, he was an underdog a little bit. started off at a small school, had to work his ass off, gets to Auburn, never stops playing hard. He’s always 110% out there on the floor, and with the instincts as well, he’s just a very smart, heady player. So, he’s he’s a fundamentally sound player, and that of course will help him no matter what level of basketball he is at. So, I’m excited to see what he can do in the summer league and hopefully start to prove me wrong um and show that he really does belong in the NBA and the Sixers were smart for picking him up there in the second round. Few more guys, few more storylines that I am excited to get to regarding the Sixers summer league squad. But first, deal alert. These Tyrese Maxi jerseys, I continue to tell you guys about these because they are on clearance on sale for 50% off, marked down from $120 all the way down to just $60 for a very, very limited time only. Again, 50% off down from $120 to 60 $60. chatsports.commaxie50. Uh that in the comments and description of today’s video. So, let’s get now to some of the non- rookies that I’m very, very excited for. And of course, that has to start with Justin Edwards, the UDFA in 2024, who had a tremendous 2025 and just got rewarded with a new three-year contract by Philadelphia. Absolutely a setting now where I expect Justin Edwards to dominate. Honestly, I don’t know if I expect him to play the entirety of summer league if he is playing that well. Based off what he showed against NBA competition throughout the back half of last season, reason to believe he could be one of the better players in all of summer league entering this cycle. with again the improvements he showed especially offensively at the end of last season showing off the three-point ability the ability to drive to the basket dunk on people much better creating his own shot than I think he has ever showed and of course a great defender as well at 6’7 just a great opportunity for him to gain some extra confidence heading into next season and really show like man I’m that guy I can start for this 76ers team no doubt he’ll play a big role when the season does start. Lot of the same can be said for Adm Bona, who was a sex or second round pick back in 2024. Got a lot of run this past season with injuries to Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond. I’m excited to see some further development from Bona because a lot of physical tools, a lot of athletic traits that play really well and make him very successful. Made him very successful at UCLA in college, but needs to kind of get some of the other things down right. Offensively, he’s kind of just a run and dunk big. Doesn’t have a whole lot of touch around the basket or post moves. He’s pretty much just going to dunk on you and he can even he can take you off the off the dribble just a little bit and take you to the basket, right? But want to see if he can develop some more skills on the offensive end, but his bread and butter defensively, right? Just want to see some better instincts. You know, young players like him, it’s very expected that once they get to the NBA, they can kind of foul a lot. even if they were really good defenders in college, not quite as consistent once they get to the NBA. So, against lower level of competition here, I want to see that he’s made some improvements, made some strides in his game. Another player that I’m excited to watch him and Edwards should be able to dominate against a lot of these other players in summer league. Then, we got to talk about Hunter Salis. A very, very intriguing two-way signing for Philadelphia. Kind of similar to the Justin Edwards story. a former five-star recruit. Now, Edwards was a top three recruit in his class. Salis was number 13 according to ESPN, two years at Gonzaga. Didn’t really pan out. Transfers to Wake Forest where he had a pretty solid couple of seasons there. Now, the offense to be a little up and down, especially the shooting from outside, a little bit inconsistent, but clearly, you know, has the tools, has the pedigree, has the background, and he said he’s really putting in the work this off seasonason. So, the Sixers found a steal last year in Justin Edwards. They’ve already signed Hunter Salis to a two-way contract. So, someone they’re clearly very interested in and wanted to keep on this roster. We’ll see what kind of stuff he can show off coming up in the summer league. And he talked about where his areas of focus are heading into the summer. And it’s got me excited. Defensively, that’s an area that I really want to show that I’m really good at. And then becoming a more consistent knockdown shooter. That goes a long way with any team in this league. So definitely the two main focuses of my skill development for sure. And that’s two areas that the Sixers can really use on this roster. It’s smart. for him to focus on these areas. Defense, three-point shooting, very, very valuable to a lot of teams in the league. If you can show those skills off, you’ll always have a place, at least on a roster, uh, in a lot of different places around the NBA. And then again, just to go through this roster really quickly, I mentioned earlier some of the other guys I’m excited for. Kev Aluma, um, I mentioned someone that he could have gotten a two-way deal last season and he fits with what the Sixers need on this roster. currently, you know, another big forward who can score it, he can shoot it. Judah Mintz, another exciting player who had some big games, can really get to the line as a smaller guard. Could he be fighting for a two-way deal? Those are really the two guys uh outside of everybody else that I’ve mentioned here that I’d be looking forward to the most for watching. But of course, everybody here is going to get a very good opportunity to show what they can do and show that at the very least they belong in an NBA organization, whether that be for Philadelphia or for another team. That’s another reason why I like watching other teams play in summer league. It’s a try out for really every team around the league. So fun to see a lot of these young guys play hard. Might not be the prettiest basketball all the time, but it’s fun basketball to watch nonetheless. So, I gave you some names that I’m excited to watch. You get in the comments section. Let me know who are you most excited to watch in 76ers summer league. Drop a name in the comment section and as always be sure to hit that sub button and we’ll see you next time here on 76ers Now.
