NBA TODAY | Marc J Spears: Adding Cam Johnson make Jokic & Nuggets are biggest threat to Thunder

Battle fans, sorry. Kevin Durant had just concluded his rookie season with the Sonics when they moved to OKC. He spent the next eight seasons with the Thunder. KD spoke on the current Thunder on the Mind the Game podcast. It’s a problem for the league. Yeah, it is. It’s for the league. Those guys are all young dudes. Shade’s going to be he going to be that guy for rest of his career. What is Jay Williams and chat going to be? You know what I’m saying? Of course they playing great right now, but those three guys got to keep I mean SH’s already at that but those two guys got to keep getting better. Those guys got a solid core dudes and I think they going to continue to hunt everybody. The Thunder seem to have broken the mold with their championship win this season and they leaned in heavy on their youth. So Oklahoma City is the second youngest team to win a title in the shock clock era behind the 77 Blazers with Bill Walton and company and appear to be situated to keep the winning ways going here. All right, this Thunder team. Ok, they have a chance. We’re really good for a long time. All right, but Mark after all the moves this season, what do you think is the biggest threat to them in the West? Denver. I really like what they did, man. Um, getting Cam in there, starting lineup. He plays on both ends. I just saw him in New York. I think he’s pretty ecstatic to be going to Denver and then you’re bringing guys like Bruce back and the bench got better. You got to remember they took the Thunder to seven games in the second round. They’re still scary to me. I think they’re going to have a chip on their shoulder. Think last season was the toughest for Aaron Gordon. after the you know nightmare that he went through with brother’s pass and I think he’ll be better. I’m I’m scared for what the Denver Nuggets could be next year. I’m I’m also going to say Denver. I I covered that series between those two teams. It was really close and I think the Thunder superior depth uh help them push through and Aaron Gordon’s injury in that game 7 really was a was a major factor in that series. But they got better this offseason. I I They got Tim Hardaway Jr. for their bench this year, Jonas, right? Valentunis, like they’ve done a really good job of reshaping that roster and adding some depth of one thing they left. Plus, I think those guys walked away from that series feeling like they could win. Listen, I I get it. I did games 3 and four of that series. But I think the Houston Rockets could be that team when they desperately needed someone to help close games for them. And K is certainly that guy that can bring that part of the game to the Houston Rockets. They didn’t give up very much for him in regards to the fact that like Jayen Green is a nice young player, but Kat’s going to fill that role. I think Jabar Smith is going to get better. Shengon is going to get better. Amin Thompson is a star in the making and they have the leadership of Fred Van Bleep Eudoka. They add a guy clin Capella to add more depth up front. They’ve done a really nice job here this offseason. They got a lot going for them without question. It’s been remarkable to watch their turnaround for the last couple of years. They don’t have Yokic. Yeah. You know, I mean, you beat Yokic one time and you’re like, “Wow, that was tough. Beat him four times. You know, they got Turkish Yok. Well, when he when he gets when he gets to regular Yokic, let me know. But I I don’t want to say anything negative about the Rockets. I respect them a lot, but I respect number 15 more than any. Ok, fair enough. All right, one team we can all probably agree on is the Lakers in regards to not being in that top tier at the moment of the Western Conference. So, they’ve added Jake Laravia and lost Doran Infinity Smith so far who went to the Rockets by the way. So, how do you feel about the Lakers currently? Uh, I’m waiting. I’m waiting to see what else they do as their fan bases, right? Like waiting. I mean, I don’t like to decide who won or lost the off season today. Um, and oftentimes the people we think won or lost the offseason, we’ve sat up here and said, “Oh, what a great offseason the Lakers had.” And then none of those pieces fit and they had to trade everybody. I mean, so they haven’t done much. I mean, and I think letting Fitty Smith go that’s going to hurt them. They give him a first to get him. That was kind of rough for them. But at the price that he left, I understand why they did it. Losing Brook Lopez, who everybody, you know, we assume they were going to get because of the uncertainty and and that he felt around LeBron James’s future with the franchise. That has to hurt. And so now they’re still scrambling for a center. Dave McMenaman said here on the show yesterday, they’ve got some trades working. I’ve heard the same. But what kind of names are we talking about? Are these are these elite rim runners that are going to partner with Luca forever or these just guys? Uh, I would probably say more of the ladder than the former. So, I think that’s a problem for them unless they make a trade. Let’s say and I think it will come by a trade. I think But they’ve been reluctant to part with that 2031 pick or or the 32 they could trade one of them. Yeah, they are reluctive to to put in future assets, but I also have to do something and I think they recognize that. I know they have a few things going. So, I’m going to say incomplete. Fair enough. Bobby’s at the board. Let’s get to Bobby at the board with the Lakers. Bobby, what do you got? I would agree with Ramona. I would give them an incomplete also because we’ve been talking since February about trying to get a center and right now for today it’s Jared Vanderville who’s better served coming off the bench. I would certainly pay attention to what happens with Deander 8 and he clears wavers at 5 p.m. Eastern time today. My big concern also, George, is their bench, right? As far as where their bench is, they certainly signed Jake Laavia. And here’s what’s left, Dalton Connect. Here’s some of the big questions right now. They’ve got two exceptions, $8 million and $.1 million, but watch out for the first apron. You $14 million below. So, you combine both of them. You can sign separate players. You’re going to be right pressed against that number. These two right here are connected. Ok. They have $40 million in expiring contracts. We mentioned that first in 20 and 31 or 32, but they also have flexibility in 26 where they potentially could have maybe two max players to join Luca. Here’s the question. If there’s a trade out there for the Lakers where they have to take back money that stretches into next season and it doesn’t really move the needle that much but gets them better a little bit, would they go out and do that here and take away some of that flexibility for next season? All right. Well, thank you Bobby. Center, we got Stephen A. Smith to weigh in on this news. The Nick’s hire Mike Brown as their new head. Coach Stephen A. Smith joining us now on the phone. And Stephen A, we know you’re a huge Nick fan. Your reaction to this hire? Well, I respect the hell out of Mike Brown. Um, I will honestly tell you it lacks sizzle, but certainly not credentials. I mean, he’s a four-time champion as an assistant coach. He achieved those rings by working under two of the greatest coaches the game has ever seen in Greg Popovic and Steve K. On top all of that, he’s a two-time coach of the year. Uh, 2009 in Cleveland and obviously a couple of years back in Sacramento. Um, he’s coached the team to an NBA finals, which is what he did with the Cleveland Cavaliers. And then when you combine all of that with the fact that he’s won 60% of his games and he guided the Sacramento Kings to their first playoff birth in 16 years after 16ye absence which was an NBA record at the time, you can’t sit up there and question what uh the credentials of this higher. Mike Brown has qualified as a head coach in the NBA circles. Uh he deserves this opportunity. It’s just that obviously when you just came within two games of an NBA finals and you decide to let go of your coach that is Tom Thido, you’re expecting a bigger name. But there’s nobody this way, meaning me, that’s going to question the credentials of Mike Brown and the fact that he’s worthy and deserving of this opportunity. And you laid it all out right there, the credentials, the pedigre with all the injuries and uncertainty in the East next year. What are your expectations for this New York next team? Well, I expect them to be right back where we last saw them, which was in the Eastern Conference finals because the Boston Celtics don’t have Jason Tatam. The Milwaukee Bucks don’t have Damian Lilla to pair with uh Jonathan to theo. Even though Orlando just picked up Desmond Bane, you still expect the Nicks to be right there with them. The Cleveland Cavaliers had an exceptional season, can’t get much better than the season they had during the regular season. And yet we saw how they bowed out in the postseason. And so when you take all of those things into consideration and you’re looking at the fact that the New York Nick’s top seven players remain on their roster, you’re talking about Jayen Brunson, Carl Anthony Towns, Michel Bridges, OG Anoby, Mitchell Robinson, uh Michael McBride, obviously Josh Hart, the energiz Bunny himself, they haven’t gone anywhere. So why should we expect less from the New York next? We should expect at least the same.
And there’s been a lot of talk about the similarities and differences between Mike Brown and Tom Tibeto. How do you think Mike Brown’s coaching style fits with this Nick’s roster? Well, I definitely think that he’s a bit calmer and less intense than Tom Civido. And by the way, he also has better credentials. Even though Tom Civid was in a cheer as a champion as an assistant coach, well, Mike Brown is a four-time champion. Uh, but Tom Ti never took a team to the finals as a head coach. Mike Brown did although he had LeBron James at his disposal instead of Jayen Brunson. So we get the fact that they’re comparable coaches uh and Mike Brown from a personality stamp. I personally love Tibs. Um I think that he’s an approachable person, an exceptional coach, etc. etc. But clearly very intense as we see him on the sidelines where Mike Brown may come across a bit more relaxed uh not a bit not as panicky as Tom Tibeto in terms of having a winning record, winning basketball games and still feeling compelled to have your starters out there late in games because Lord Lord help us. You might be able to come back from a 20 point leave with 60 seconds left. That’s the kind of stuff that Tom Divid uh is is known. I’m beingous to some degree, but that’s just to explain his intensity. Mike Brown is a little less intense as a personality, but very much intense as a coach. uh certainly intense enough to be committed to getting the job done and obviously his record, his credentials as a head coach in this league are not to be question. Or Kobe Bryan may have had questions when he was alive got rested soul from time to time. LeBron James may have had questions when Mike Brown was coaching them relatively young in his career before he arrived in Golden State and helped Steve Kur and the Golden State Warriors capture three championships or at least before with LeBron James instead of Kobe. In the end, he’s proven himself as a head coach in this game. And the New York Nicks, we can’t look at them and say they don’t have a quality head coach. That would be a misnoma. That would be a flat out lie. That is not the case with Mike Brown. the mankin coach and he’s proven it and he deserves this opportunity.
And look, we saw it last season the Nick’s getting to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. What needs to be different this upcoming season in order for them to get over the hunt with Mike Brown? Well, I think they need to exercise their depths. That’s why I’m glad to see them uh about to sign Jordan Clarkson. Um and this guy get Seans. It’s really good to get to see them have two additional guys that you can come off the bench and throw out there because the starters were worn down. And that’s one of the things I I said it many times. I’ll say it again. The greatest line of the NBA season came from TNT’s very own Kenny the Jet Smith when he said Tom Di would have problems would have a problem playing nine guys in a baseball game. That’s what he said. And we all know you need nine guys on the field in baseball. Tom Z would have a problem with that. That’s not Mike Brown. Mike Brown is going to use his depth if the opportunity is presented to him to do so. He’s not going to have to be pushed into doing that. He’s a kind of individual that he recognizes the importance of depth and that’s something that he’ll utilize particularly during a regular season going into the playoffs and stuff like that. So I think that’s a difference in their personalities but in the end the Nicks have to exercise that depth and they have to have an additional big that you can put at the five. So you’re not asking Carl Anthony Towns to do that. He’s a shooter. He’s a big who shoots the basketball from the perimeter preferably from threep range. That’s what you want from Carl Anthonys. That’s what you need from Carl Anthonys. He need to make sure that you got another big in Chào đã quay trở lại với kênh của mình. Hôm nay mình sẽ tiếp tục hướng dẫn mọi người ngược.

NBA TODAY | Brian Windhorst: Adding Cam Johnson make Nikola Jokic & Nuggets are biggest threat to Thunder in West

  1. As long as okc gets every foul call in their favor, they will be great. If a WNBA team got those same calls, they would be a dynasty in the NBA.

  2. Does anyone else remember game 5 in OKC when Denver went into the 4th quarter ahead by 8? Jokic went 4/6 shooting and 4/4 FTs for 13 points. The rest of the team went 1/14 from the field and the only basket they made came with :17 left when OKC was already up by 8 points and gave a concession layup to Jamal Murray? They lost 112-105…..

Yea, Jokic needed some help, just anyone to show up and shoot better than 7%. If the rest of those bums just shot an abysmal 30%, Denver wins that series in 6 🤦

  3. Denver already would have won last year if the scheduling refused to give them a day off, just like the Celtics in the 80s with the Lakers. Cam is MPJ with some upside because better fit philosophically, and in the end they got 4 players for 1 and still paid less for all 4, in exchange for that draft pick. Go ahead and doubt please, that's what gets Denver rings.
