What do the Kings’ moves mean for the future of this roster?

Question three.
What are the Kings trying to do with their moves thus far? The championship. Yeah. Yeah.
82 and0. Kyle, that’s too far. 77 and five. I think uh
73 and N final answer.
Sam is coming on.
Will Sam know?
I don’t He’ll know something. So let let’s let’s you know we had we had we had a chance to talk to some you know folks that know things and and and try to get an idea.
I talked to Slamson by the way didn’t say much
a lot of sign language. Do you don’t speak Lion?
I don’t.
So it’s so it was feel the for you. You didn’t understand Roar. Now you don’t. What am I saying? Right. Uh we said earlier Dennis Shruder look I think they overpaid for him. I think every I think a lot of people go, you know,
the years or the money or both.
Well, I don’t have a I don’t I’m gonna go back to what we said yesterday, Jason. Let me bring up the King’s uh salary table here.
Uh I’m going to I’m going to share it with
everybody on the on the YouTube. You know what’s interesting too? I I feel like and I don’t know if you have the same re like I feel like the contracts just in as a general statement this offseason.
Yeah. Uh maybe it’s this is too much of a generality because there’s probably some examples but I feel like there’s been a little bit of a pullback. Like I mean okay if Shruder’s getting roughly 15 mil per whether you think that’s an overpay or not I’m thinking of like
I don’t know a couple years ago Herder was making like 17 Barnes at 18. Um, you know, there’s guys in the 20s and I don’t know. It just it doesn’t seem crazy. I mean, all of it seems crazy if you really think of just the common person out there, but
I don’t know. It just But then you get SGA, you’re like 71 million. You’re like, my There is a big It’s almost like radio. There is a big uh upper class, lower class.
Yeah.
And then you there’s not a lot of middle going on. uh the these and and the Kings are no different. Uh they’re on the hook right now for $176 million next season combined. Uh and 90 million of that 176 is Lavine and Sabonis. It’s very topheavy. And then D Rozan at 25, Monk at 19, and now Shruder at uh Well, see it’s spelled with an E here.
S H R O E. I always thought it was but
but well did I swear I saw
it’s just true is how it’s
but what’s interesting as you have that table up for those that aren’t on YouTube but it basically is the graphic of what the King’s layout is for the next couple years. I think what’s important and you did bring this up earlier Dave was that it seems like and again kind of getting like as you said plugged in with some of the people that are in the in the no with the Kings they’re trying to be you know have a functioning team this year but also not really
where you go wow they got contracts laid out for five more years exorbitant amount of prices it feels like there’s a little bit of a numbers timeline here that
Scott Perry’s not trying to exceed as far as not too far out in contracts.
No, I completely agree with you and I I think the key to that thought is let’s let’s pull out and look at the contracts here. You’ve got two years. Yeah, everyone’s clipped up this year.
Move on.
Next year um coming off the books uh at at least Sar Eubanks, Terrence Davis, uh Keon if they don’t extend him and uh uh Isaac Jones I guess was one year. I don’t know. Isaac Jones isn’t lined up. But also even next year if nothing happens with Sabonis or Lavine it’s easier next year to move those guys
because now all and by the way Lavine has and this is an interesting thing to monitor Lavine has a player option next year. So there is always the thought of they could extend him for lesser annual value. I don’t know if he’d want to do that or try. I don’t see him getting any higher than 40. I I I see no way where he doesn’t opt into that player option unless he’s extended. He’s not getting four. But he’s not getting 50 a year anywhere.
And if he is, that means he had a fabulous year this year.
And that’s Hey,
and that’s a win for the Kings if he’s on the Kings.
Also, I think D Rozan’s deal is partially guaranteed.
Mhm. It is. And he is on an expiring. So, you really have to look ahead this season and next season because once that’s done, you have Sabonis on an expiring provided you still have Monk. You have Monk on a $21 million player option. And then this is the key. When you look at year three of Dennis Shrutder, now it has him listed at 15.7 million. What I’ve been told is that is a very small partial guarantee. In other words, nowhere near that. you you for all intents and purposes you could you should consider it a two-year deal with a team option for a third which is they they never say never but the plan is not to have this going on three years from now with with Shrewd now to add to that at that point you will have the team option you would assume again if he’s still on the team on Devin Carter picked up but you have extensions eligible for both Keegan Murray and Keon Ellis now one thing that I think is really important to note about all of this. Did Dennis Shruder get overpaid a little bit? Maybe fine. Is Shrutder going to be a serviceable point guard for this team that needed a point guard? Sure. And I asked I said, “Why? Why do you need a point guard? Who cares? Put, you know, put Carter out there. Put Ellis out there. Put whoever out. Just let them do their thing. Screw it.” And and I asked that question. I thought the answer, and we said this earlier, was very good. It’s it’s as much for the team as it is for the coach and the coaching staff. They need an onf flooror general to be able to do these things. You need an actual point guard. It’s not necessarily about wins, but you also don’t want to throw. You got a young, you know, it’s like a rookie. You want to develop the rookie. Well, you also want to develop your coach. They they think Doug Christie can be a very good head coach. You you and you you or you may disagree. They want to develop their coach and their coaching staff, which is why they surrounded him with the Mike Woodsons of the world, people that are experienced, but they also want to give these guys a fighting chance, especially considering they won 40 games last year with all the drama. I get that.
But I think what is really interesting to know here on the uh the Wendy anniversary, Brian Windhor’s anniversary, Dennis Shruder, Keon Ellis, and Keegan Murray all have the same agent, Mark Bartlestein. Yeah. And I don’t
I do not believe that’s a coincidence. I’m not No, what I’m not saying is that, oh, we don’t want Dennis Rude or oh, we’re going to do you a favor so we can get a Sure.
That’s not how that’s not how it works.
But there are relationships there.
And when we talk about Scott Perry, you look at the relationships, you look at this past history. Jason, I’m not ready to say that the team has out and out said they are now entering into a full rebuild phase because I don’t they’re not going to bottom out, right?
You can. But what I think when you look at the strategy and the tea leaves, it very much looks like they’re thinking, “Okay, we got two years to get rid of all this stuff. Two years to gather draft assets, two years to gather youth, and then we’re going to have a ton of money to work with both for trades if a free agent wants to come here. I don’t expect the bulk of this roster to be here a year from now.” Yeah. When I say the bulk, I mean the bulk of the roster to be here. Not and I don’t mean like big guys either. I mean, you know, more than more than seven to be gone. So, it was interesting to whether they follow that or not, I don’t know. Whether somebody’s mind changes, I don’t know. But so far, I don’t have a problem.
Well, and I think that’s the thing, too. And I know general managers can get grief for this, but like
I think plans change a lot. Like, hey, this is our plan and then, oh, team X came in with this offer. Like, you know what? we weren’t thinking of that, but now this is a road we’re going to take, right?
Or this trade or an injury and we had to change course. So those are the kind of things that can happen. But um I think the one last part of this on my thought is I think where there’ll be some debate as the year goes on is,
you know, would Westbrook have been better, would uh Ty Jerome, Tyus Jones, you know, when they needed a point guard, totally get that. Um those guys might have been less expensive, but was Shruder going to play out better? That’s that’s something we’ll watch. And I think that a real great way to combat that is just not care. Just do what I do. I don’t care if it was. Don’t don’t. Yeah, I would. Coming next season, I will. Well, look, you know what I care about? I care about Golden One Center being smiley, being happy, and as always, being filled with the best fans in the NBA that bring the energy. Much like my friends in American Energy, heating and air will bring you a second opinion.

The Sacramento Kings have made some… interesting… moves thus far in free agency. What are they trying to accomplish with these signings and trades?

Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross try to make sense of it all.

  1. The Kings have a logjam at the shooting guard position. Between Monk, Zach LaVine, Keon Ellis, and Devin Carter, they have more bodies than minutes for the two-guard spot. They need to balance out the roster.. someone has to go.

  2. Please just trade for some wings and tank let's blow it up!!!! The most forbidden words in the NBA LETS BLOW IT UP!!!
