VJ Edgecombe 76ers Debut Full Play – 28 Pts, 10 Rebs, 4 Asts, 2 Blks | July 5, 2025

That’s a look at the Huntsman Center playing host to the 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League. High level talent hoping to prove they belong on an NBA roster. Four teams are in town and tonight’s highlighted game matches the Philadelphia 76ers against the hometown Utah Jazz and fans have packed this building. Why? Two of the top five picks will be on the floor tonight, including Ace Bailey. We’re excited. I think the country is excited to see VJ Edgecom. There he is a 6’5 guard out of Baylor taken number three overall by the Sixers. T his numbers 15 a game. And here’s what’s so impressive. You break his film down. Yeah, he can score, but he possesses really just great defensive quickness.
Yeah, I’m not sure if there’s another a better story or journey of a player
agreed
than BJ Edgecom. We’re going to learn more about that. But you talk about a guy who has been through the ring, not just him, but his family, the way he grew up, it is going to be exciting to really watch him play. Uh, but he’s got a lot to play for, and he’s going to be a great talent in his league. He’s what, he’s all but 6′ 4 in tall, about a little less than 200 lb. primarily a shooting off guard, but he’s going to be able to do some things on both sides of the ball. And it starts here tonight with those two stars.
You know, this may be unfair, but everyone in the draft process, the scouting process likes to compare him uh and all players with another NBA player. They put Victor Oladipo at the front of the line to kind of compare his game with Victor’s.
Well, I think it’s okay. It’s okay to to not necessarily compare him apples to apples, but there’s some tendencies that he may have. The explosiveness that Victor Oladipo um had in his game as a young player and also the ability to disrupt on the defensive end. Um all those things are important, but in the end, it’s about you. It’s about your game and how you can affect the team that you’re on.
Number five pick now. The number three pick. Edgecom has the ball knocked out of his hands by Cody Williams. as Gome passes out. Three ball up, three ball down by Broom.
Actually thought Broom would go a little bit higher.
The question was, would his game translate? No, he’s he’s a physical guy, but also had a streaky spot in college at Auburn. In fact, his three-point percentage is 30%. Ace Bailey tried to steal it from Edcom. Sends a ball. Puts a hand inside. Kimman in Mona. Two quick buckets. Edgecom inside. Good D by Filipowski. Shut down that baseline just enough. The Utah Jazz on the offensive side playing that 2.5 second game. There you go. Good look. Ace Bailey rebounds the miss. Strides into front court.
See how excited fans are to see him score his first two buckets in the summer league. Two points
and Edge comes comes back and the two top five picks are score back to back. Yeah, and both are going to be exciting players in this league. [Music] And
I like what I’m seeing, not just on the offensive end, but how are the Jazz getting those buckets? They’re playing great D. They’re getting downhill, trying to get early shots in that shot clock and they’re finding the bucket. That’s Co. Pretty solid that shot just almost rises off T paused squared his shoulders and hit a a beautiful jump shot. [Music] Nice pass down a little inside. Broom scores it and oneowski Clayton Jr. had that shot blocked by Edcom. No look pass once, twice, deep triple, missed it inside edge comb with the flush. Jazz has been out hustled right now, especially in the paint.
Taylor, lastly, what are you looking forward to your teammates doing at Summer League this year?
Uh, really just um, you know, um, playing together, uh, communicating a lot, and, you know, just having a good attitude about everything.
Should be a fun time. Taylor, thank you so much for coming on.
Thank you. And a moment ago, you and I both went kind of let out a little howl as Edgecomb elevated and put that ball down with a little nasty to it.
Yeah, he did. Just steps by Walt Clayton Jr.
Edgecomb back in front court fires it inside. Broom one bounce. That ball was knocked out by Socom on a drive. Oh, he takes a hard spill. Sends a bomb. Got him with the body. Bonus sets a screen open. Edgecom got it. [Music] Cody Williams stuffed the along the baseline. Sixers get the ball back. Shows the speed of Edgecomb. Tough shot over the top. Rebound Cyer. Edgecom fires up a triple. Looks good. Short rebound. Bona one bounce inside. Hopsson and scores.
Got some winded players out. I think uh by Sensab just asked to come out.
Beautiful crossover right to left. Lost the handle. Cody Williams back the other way to send the ball. Edgecomino with the rebound. The reset. Edwards right to left. Stop and pop. Left hand shot. No. Edgecom just flies in for the rebound. Puchafino with a floater for two. That’s his first bucket of this game. Ace Bailey to the corner back out Cyer. They reset it. And it’s going one-on-one with Ace. Edcom rattles down his first two here in the second half. [Music] Was not a linear path for Walter Clayton Jr. He was a highly recruited football player coming out of high school and show that he just wasn’t a good football player, but also a stellar basketball player as well. Well, he played at Iona into Morta as everyone saw recently after his national championship path. You know, this wasn’t just a direct way for uh Walt to get here. Football was a huge part of his life, but he had to choose basketball and
right like that 63 or under in your guard. You got to be special in something. Inside Edcom starting to find some rhythm. Edcom with 19. Here’s Springer. Stop and pop. Jay short. Edcom right place, right time. Look at the speed. He’s going to take it as a rash. Sens got back, tracked him down, and knocked it away. Well, that’s had the jump, too. He had the lead on Bryce Sensab, but Bryce just doing a nice job of tracking the ball, kind of swiping it from behind. Edcom fires it up. [Applause] That’s a gimme for VJ. There’s Broom. Edgecomb turns the corner a 17footer straight away drained it. Edgecomb with 21. Edgecomb drives inside out. Broom. I tell you what a follow through on that triple. If you can hit that consistently on those kick outs. That’s the question. Edgecom slips a pass. Beautifully gone and the bucket by Bona. Edgecom races across midcourt. head of steam drives off the glass for two. Oh, brother. Players fighting hard. Edgecom left to right now. Squares up straight away. That ball skips off the left side. Beautiful pass. Edcom, what hustle. There’s the athleticism we talked about and the hops he has on the defensive end. Edcom inside. Bank it scores. Wow. Both ends of the court in a matter of seconds. see what he can do defensively and then rises up and hits off the window.
Well, Springer tries to bait him on the pump fake. Edgecom didn’t go for it and gets the block and the block turns into a reward on the other side. M1 off the bump. 25 and 10 has four assists. Edgecom gets it back from Bona. A minute to go. On the shot to his left, flips, turns, fires. patience, no panic, squared his shoulders, te and just knocked it home. That’s a mature shot from a young player.
Dropped 27 on the Jazz. He’s taken 25 shots, made 13. Edgecom drives, left hand, wild shot, draws a foul, makes his second. Edwards. Edgecomb rebound. Bailey 2.6 to play. They gave it to the rookie. Edgecomb fires up a triple. Nearly put it down. And Utah survives against Philadelphia 93- 89.

  1. Analytical, smart, hard-working, compassionate and a good teammate. Started playing basketball as a teenager. Lots of positives here.

  2. Him jared and maxey gonna be so good togetherπŸ’™β€οΈ if he wouldve hit that 3 to force ot I wouldve cried

  3. He was raw coming out, we all knew this. Not just based on the video but even prior to that, my thoughts.

I'd say in 3 years or so he can be a very good #3 if he really works at his game.
He needs to sharpen his ball control considerably. He's relying heavily on his nuclear athleticism to back defenders off him. Its a very high & loose handle for a guard. Because of this his ability to translate to a G at the NBA level is worrisome. Luckily this is a skill guys definitely do develop if they work at it.
Defensively, his talent is great, coaches need to help him get better instincts so he can become better but he doesn't seem quick enough to defend quick small players like a Kyrie or Steph. Given he will be sharing a backcourt with Maxey or McCain, its absolutely necessary he be able to guard quicker guards without fouling. Also his size leaves a big target to be screened off so he'll need to be more aware at the NBA level where illegal screens arent called at all.
Playmaking is there but has the need to see it before he lets it go, needs to be better to expect what will be open but I think some of that will come with time.
Shooting is a concern but given how every young player now just finds a shot & slowly works at it, not out of the realm of possibility to be a 35-37% shooter by year 3. Given how his shots fall short, and a similar movement with every shot, its likely he can develop this with time as well.

Overall the kid needs a year to develop his handle and spot up shooting. Dont be surprised if the 76ers have him in the G league early & often to help the handle & spot up shooting. From everything Ive read & heard, he works very hard so give him so time.

Only issue is this guy is a project @ #3 overall. His floor seems to be a bench defensive guard capable of defending wings. His ceiling is a good 2 way G like Dejounte Murray but with plus strength & explosive athletic ability. He's got the frame but at 20 he's unlikely to grow another 2 inches or so to play the 3 at the NBA level.
This is why my hope was the Sixers deal down & get picks to rebuild while drafting a ready made role player with good starter upside like dealing down to get a guy like Carter Bryant who projects to be a day 1 contributor off the bench as a 3/4.

  4. VJ needs to develop more like DWade than Spida . His shot mechanics leans more to the middy than the 3 very simpler mechanics to Kawhi

  5. Sixers when healthy have an actual elite team especially for a weak east. Getting rid of PG while he still has SOME value and clear up minutes for guys like VJ is the next step!
