Corey Brewer on Jeremiah Fears, Derik Queen | 2025 NBA Summer League

Um, I think first day went good. You know, we got a bunch of young guys. We got three draft picks, which is great. And for us, you know, we got in some good work. You know, we only got three days to put in a lot of stuff, but um, I think it went well.
What are kind of the first impressions of Jeremiah and Derek early?
Uh, Jeremiah’s fast. That’s the first impression. Fast, man. He gets up and down the court really fast. Um, he’s going to be a good player. Good young guy. Derek can really play. He can really score the ball. He can pass. So, I like both. I love both those guys. Hey, Cory, what’s this opportunity like just for you just just to get a chance to coach these guys, be a coach?
Um, a great opportunity for me, you know, thanks for the Pelicans organization. Coach Green letting me have this role, you know, just being able to be a head coach coming out here, be able to teach these guys.
Is that something you thought you would be doing someday like? Oh, that’s of course always the goal. Anytime you get into coaching or doing something, you want to be a head coach, and my goal is to be a head coach. So, you know, it’s one step forward. I know you uh you all have found guys like Jose in the summer league, but how important is it going to be for your first round draft picks to make sure that they they do get a ton of minutes so you can kind of see what they do.
Oh, it’s going to be really important. You know, those guys are going to get a tournament, of course, just because, you know, they’re our draft pick, they’re our guys, and we want to see what we got. So, we we can put those guys out there in the right positions and, you know, let them succeed.
What do you want to see from the players in general? Like, when they take the court out there?
Uh, we’re going to play hard. You know, that’s going to be our identity. We’re going to be the hardest playing team and we’re going to get some wins.
Is that kind of a plan early on with Jeremiah putting the ball in his hands and allow him to run the offense?
Of course. I want him. Put the ball in his hand. Let him make plays. You got to make mistakes, too. The only way you’re going to get better is by making mistakes. So, he’s going to have the ball in his hand.
I know that you played mistake with one kind of coach. People always want comparisons. Is there like a comparison between that you can kind of give somebody that you may have played with or just kind of think his game looks like? Comparison. That’s tough. you know, hey, he’s a big dude who can he can shoot it. He can pass, he can playmate. Hey, man. Can’t really think about it. To be honest right now, I got to see him play more.
How have you seen maybe the cohesiveness between you and me so far? Um, it’s been good. You know, um, they’re learning to play off each other. You know, we’re going to play them together, which is I think it’s going to help both of them.
Does Eve look different to you? I mean,
Eve looks good. He looks like he’s in better shape. He looks like he’s stronger and I think we’re going to see a different need this year.
How good is that? A guy who started most of last year being a part of this.
Oh, it’s great. You know, we got Eve was all rookie last year. Um, you know, started the whole year for us. So, have him out here is only going to help our team.
Will you play Eve with Queen a lot?
Of course. Got to play them together. Hey, put put the best players on the court.
How are you going to handle um playing in the big three and coaching?
Oh, I’ll be I’ll be here. I’ll be coaching. I have to take a week off. What do you kind of remember from playing summer league back when you played? Like what do you remember from as a player?
Just the opportunity to play your first NBA type minutes. So these guys, it’s going to be great for them, but they’re going to be nervous. And so once they get out there, you know, try to ease their nerves and just put them in position to succeed.
What’s kind of your message to the to the guys that have never been on the stage before? Like what do you tell them?
Um enjoy it, have fun, you know, focus in and go out there and be the best you.
I mentioned Jose earlier. Is this an opportunity? I mean, look, guys get discovered here. somebody can kind of open some eyes that and this may be a big chance for them.
Of course, any of a lot of these guys are looking for opportunities, so they got to go out here and play their best. So, summer less where you do it. A lot of teams are going to be watching.
It’s kind of off topic, but what do you think about seeing your son go viral with that dunk all over social media?
He’s been working, you know, hopefully he just keeps getting better.
And what’s that what’s that been like to you kind of taking in the game from that perspective as the dad watching from the sidelines? Uh, it’s been different. you know, used to being a player and then coaching and then being a dad. Like that’s three different three different people, I guess you could say. So I want to coach him, but then I want to yell at him, then I’m like, “Let me sit down and just be dad.” So it’s different.
