How big is this summer for you?
Great. It’s real big. It’s a lot of work. Um getting better at the little things I need to uh do to help my team win. Um but it’s going going real good so far. Were you excited to get out there today for this practice first one?
Yeah, for sure. Um you know, getting ready for summer league. Uh just to showcase everything I’ve been working on in the summer and being with the guys I’m going to play with. Felt good.
What’s your your mentality? What do you want it to be for those summer league games?
The win. I just want to win. Um, win a championship. That’s my mentality. Now that you’ve played obviously in the NBA, even in playoff games, like just confidence-wise is that is I imagine it’s just different this year going into summer league play for you.
Sure. Um, I would say I’m always confident, but you’re right. It is a little different. I’m more confident uh than I was uh in the last summer. Um, but that doesn’t come with work. Um, so the more you work, I feel like the more confident you are.
Kevin said the expectation for you was that you’re probably going to lead the team in scoring in summer league. What’s it like to have that kind of vote of confidence behind your offensive game?
Uh, I feel like this is goes to the work that I put in. Um, and it just shows how much uh, Coach Kev trusted me with the team. Uh, but yeah, man. kind of I’m going showcase everything I’ve been working on and y’all going to see why the change from double zero to one uh just something I wanted to do. I actually made a decision during the middle of the season.
Okay.
And I mean I wore number one at Texas Tech. Um only wore a few certain amount of numbers so I just did the change. Uh, you know, Jaylen was talking to us last training camp about how weird it was that, you know, they traded for Dante and another number zero comes in and then you all have to kind of scramble and find numbers. What was the reason behind double zero last year? Just Illinois connection or
uh I did one zero, but uh I mean I just tried on double zero see how it was. I ain’t really like like that though. Uh but you know you got to live with live with it. So make the best of every situation. So just what I did.
Last year defense was a really big emphasis of yours. I mean going back to last summer league. U sounds like that’s going to be kind of the emphasis again that the coaches are looking for. How do you feel your defense has kind of progressed over the year?
Uh real good. Um just adjusting to the speed of the NBA. Um guarding really good players that are really good at what they do. Um, some players are just wired to score. Um, so just learning uh when to be so be aggressive with a player, knowing when to give him a little bit of space. Um, but just really just knowing your personnel, but I feel like I got a lot better defensively.
How helpful was it to have like Jaden, Nquille, I mean, even Rudy on the team last year, did they kind of help speed that process up or?
For sure. Um, them and as well. I’m just always asking questions because I’m always trying to get better. Uh, so anytime I had something, I would ask those guys and they would just help me out. Uh, and they’ll even show me stuff or point out stuff to when I’m playing when they’re on the bench. Uh, so they were really help helpful for me.
What do you want to prove this summer league? I mean, you’ve already showed so much in the t games you played in last year. An opportunity you could have this coming season. What What do you want to prove this summer?
Uh, I ain’t really proving nothing to nobody, man. I mean, I’m I’m just looking to dominate. Uh just showcase my talent. Um win these games. Uh just be the best version of myself. Um but yeah, just showcase everything I worked on and dominating.
Have you thought about the opportunity you could have next season? I mean, or is it is that just not is too far away yet? Like, have you thought about what you could bring to this team again next year?
Of course. Of course. I don’t I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it. Uh but yeah, man. I thought about it and uh but I’m also living where my feet are in this summer league. But of course, I thought about it. That’s why I’m working as hard as I am right now.
This time last year, like how far have you come in this year span? Uh very far, man. Um I feel like I’ve matured even more. Um just learn the just having a year under my belt in the NBA. Uh I feel like that helped me a lot. Um just going through the things with the team, uh coaching staff, meetings, uh having conversations with players, um going through the ups and downs. Um but just staying the course. Uh but I feel like I’m a lot better right now. It’s
a little weird being like the old veteran on a summer league team. I mean, everyone else out there’s except for like Jesse’s like 1920. Is it a little weird kind of being the old guy?
Uh not really. Because when you get on the court, y’all got to play. So, um I mean even even when you playing in the NBA, I mean it’s going to be guys older. It’s just all about how you perform.
