Indiana Pacers – Trade for Jay Huff may replace Myles cheap! Colts Camp in 16 days! Don Hein passes!
Look at what your Indiana Pacers did over the weekend, making a trade, an unheralded trade that is going to pay big dividends for them coming into the upcoming season. For a second round pick in swapping seconds, the Pacers get Jay Huff. You don’t know Jay Huff at this point. You’re going to know Jay Huff. Unless you’re a really good college basketball fan, you don’t know Jay Huff. Jay-Hoff played a few years ago for the University of Virginia. He’s 71, 240 lbs, and he’s one of three 7 foot tall centers in the NBA last year with more than 200 attempts to hit 40 or more percent from beyond the ark. He is a stretch five who can defend. He was the G-League defensive player of the year in 2023. Now, I don’t know whether he’s going to entirely replace Miles Turner or whether he’s going to be a really good backup as a stretch five, but this is kind of an anomalous sort of player in the NBA, a guy who’s played on a different NBA team each of the last four seasons and now is coming to the Indiana Pacers. We’ll talk about the trade a little bit and what Jay Huff is going to be able to do for the Indiana Pacers on the cheap, which is a good thing as they decided not to pay Miles Turner and and go into their pocket, not just pay him, but go into their pocket $47 million for next year and allow the Bucks to go into their pocket recklessly to compensate him. Ho! Pacers may have just found a really really nice way to for a period of minutes in the upcoming season replace Miles Turner. Ha. We’ll we’ll talk also about the Colts. Colts camp is getting ready to start. We’ve only got 16 days until the first practice. And and there are some I got to tell you the truth about my feeling where it comes to the Indianapolis Colts. I I’ve had back in 2017, I didn’t have a really good feeling about the Colts. A every other year since I’ve had a good feeling. I thought, you know what, this is the year they kind of got the pieces in place. I don’t know whether it’s what’s happened over those last eight years or a a feeling just of foroding about this team that is maybe unwarranted. But I’m really really working hard to talk myself into being optimistic about the 2025 season for the Colts. We’ll talk about that and reasons to be honestly, you know, uh, positive about the direction of the franchise suddenly in year nine of what has been a a mediocre run under general manager Chris Ballard. Now, there no way to sugarcoat that. I mean, I’d love to. Ballard seems like a nice guy, but that’s not what we do here. We just tell the truth. And over the last eight seasons, Pacers have gone to the playoffs twice. They have no division championships and they have one playoff win. I mean, how do you how do you polish that turd for God’s sake? Also, Indiana Fever back to work this Wednesday. Kelsey Mitchell, an all-star joining Aaliyah Boston and Caitlyn Clark on the All-Star team. That’s awesome. And Don Hine sadly passed away at the age of 85 uh this past week and hometown lived in Fisers. lived there for a while and uh uh passed away over the weekend. I if you watch TV news and sports from about 1965 to about 2000, you know who exactly who Don Heine is. Looked like he was an athlete because he was an athlete. He played college basketball in Northern Iowa. We’ll see if he can uh replace at least some of the 15 and six that Miles Turner produced last season. 10 and four in the finals. I don’t think it’s going to be alltogether that tough. I think the guy can shoot. He can stand in the corner and shoot as well as Miles Turner. Let’s go. Make sure and like the video. And and yeah, by the way, we will we’ll give one of those prizes. And there’s a Mike Tomzac mini helmet autographed from Ohio State. Uh another slick Jim Gilliam, great wide receiver for the uh Minnesota Vikings. No big whoop, but make sure and include a comment or a question that elevates level of discourse on the channel. All right, it is historic uh shirt week. This is a Twisted Gazette shirt from back in the early 90s. I wrote a newsletter and and uh distributed them in Lincoln Park Bars in Chicago for a good long period of time. Well, not that long in Chicago and and just had a really good time doing it. I thought it was it it was fun. I enjoyed it. It cost me money. I didn’t make money doing it. and and so the uh when we moved to Indianapolis, the Twist Exette of course was abandoned and and for good reason. Uh although for a short period of time, it brought great joy to residents of of Lincoln Park in Chicago. Um also, what are we doing to Oh, we’re replacing one of the That’s me with Rita Mareno. Rita Mareno giving me a uh presenting me a wonderful trophy back in the day. Speaking of trophies, Rita Mareno, one of the few people who has won a Grammy, Emmy, Tony, and an Oscar. So there you go. Rita Moreno, an entertainment superstar, still working today in her 90s. How about that? All right, let’s talk about the Indiana Pacers and the trade they made over the weekend. They trade with Memphis. Jay Huff coming to Indiana for in exchange uh for a second round pick. Plus, the Grizzlies and Pacers are swapping second rounders. I don’t know who that’s supposed to benefit. Uh Grizzlies not going to be bad. I don’t think the Pacers are going to be bad either. I think that swap may be, you know, unnecessary as I think both franchises as you look toward 2526 Pacers without Tyrese Hallebertton. Uh I think the Pacers are kind of in a similar situation to the Grizzlies. So we’ll see. Uh they of course Zack Edit, they have Zack Edit with his surgically repaired ankle. We’ll see how that goes. Uh Jay Huff, one of three seven-footers in the NBA last year with 200 or more three-point attempts to make 40 plus percent. The other two, Carl Anthony Towns and Christophs Porzingis. So, he’s got that going for him. I’m not saying he’s going to be, you know, the perfect Miles Turner replacement, but you know what? on the cheap under duress paces have kind of figured out a way maybe with James Weisman if they sign him if he’s healthy and Isaiah Jackson they can replace the uh statistics that Miles Turner put up last year and and he’s not just a onetrick pony Jay Huff Jay Huff also the defensive uh G-League player of the year uh in 2023 what that tells you number one is that he wouldn’t good enough to play in the NBA for most of the year, right? That’s not necessarily a positive. But number two, that he could at least defend G-League guys, and if he winds up being a backup center, he’s good enough to defend backup centers in the NBA. And and we’ll see how it works out. I’m optimistic this is going to be a good move. He had 2.7 blocks per 36 minutes last year. That’s pretty damn good. Uh he’s a Virginia grad, 71, 240 lbs. Uh 15 in five years will be the Pacers for Jay Huff. A and if you’re thinking there might be one or more moves coming, uh you’re not alone and you’re not wrong. Pacers have got to figure out how to lift that roster a little bit with Hallebertton being down and Turner being gone to Milwaukee. Uh Pacers summer league play begins on Thursday 5:00. They play against the Cavs in Las Vegas. They got uh Johnny Fury, they got Freeman, they got Talon Peter, they’ve got uh Kay Tommyaga gonna play again for this. I love him. What a joyous guy when he played at uh at Nebraska. Plus, he can flat shoot the rock. Uh Colts 16 days until the start of Colts camp and uh that of course is going to be held at Grand Park. They have a joint practice on the road this year in Baltimore before they play the Ravens in the preseason opener. Then they come back to Grand Park and they have a joint practice the next week against or with the Green Bay Packers before they host the Packers at uh Lucas Oil Stadium. And then of course they do not have a a final week uh joint practice before they travel to Cincinnati for the uh the preseason finale. preseason. We know how this works. We get all excited for camp. We go to camp for a few days and the excitement kind of wears off. Then they got a preseason game and we get excited to watch and then we understand that preseason is preseason and we’re not that excited anymore. And then the regular season comes and we feel pretty damn excited about the regular season. Let me give you some reasons to be excited about the Colts this regular season. Number one, they play in the AFC South, and the AFC South is not very good. The Texans are the class of the AFC South. That tells you a lot. The Texans, I don’t think are going to be very good this year. I think they’re going to take a step back. I think Tennessee takes un I think a step sideways. I don’t think they’re going to be much better. And Jacksonville is Jacksonville. The Colts really, it’s kind of there for them to find a way to to win that division. I think they’re the second best team in the division and and Houston not a runaway first. So I I think Pacers or the Colts have a chance. Uh they’ve got a very solid running game. We know that. I I think that offensive line is going to be better than people expect. We know. Yeah. Will Fry and and Ryan Kelly gone to the Vikings. They signed as free agents. Uh Tanner Bordellini at center. Mark Gonzalez at right tackle. People aren’t sure whether they’re going to be able to get that job done. I think they’re going to be really good. I think this offensive line has a chance to be better than last year’s offensive line because last year you lost Will Fry and and I I think this year I think they got a chance to have five up front who really do good work. Another reason for optimism is of course Tyler Warren. Tyler Warren is going to be really good for the uh for the Colts. He he’s going to walk out of the field as easily the best tight end on the team and I think one of the top 10 in the league. I think he gets off to a really good start this year. I’m looking forward to seeing him play. Uh Lou Anarumo as the new defensive coordinator. Gus Bradley gone. Gus Bradley of course replaced Matt Eberfloose when I flu became the head coach of the Chicago Bears. I told Bears fans I was like you’re not going to like this. This isn’t going to go well. It didn’t go well. Gus Bradley gone as well. That didn’t go well for the Colts. And and so now you got Lou Anarumo, you know, the mad scientist is going to cook up some game plans that are specific to a point uh uh opponents this year and that’s going to be a step in the right direction for the Colts and and that defense. I think that secondary is going to be much deeper than it’s been in previous years. Is it going to be better at the top end? I think so with Mooney Ward and Cam Binham. I think they’re going to be better a as they I mean Mooney Ward’s going to replace nobody basically because who is the other who is the corner opposite uh Juju Brent or Jaylen Jones, right? And and so you’ve got better uh much better depth back there. Justin Wall-E I think is going to be better as a potential outside corner. I think he, Jaylen Jones, and uh Ju Guu Brent are going to kind of fight for that other place, that other position, that other outside corner slot. And you got Kenny Moore is the slot corner. I think this is a much better secondary potentially. the linebackers. We’re not going to talk about the linebackers so very much, but I think you know what? That’s six good reasons to start feeling a little bit better about the Colts. And we need to feel better about the Colts, right? I take a look in preparation for the radio show. I have to turn the mic on for a minute and tap the microphone. And there was once about a year and three months ago that I left the microphone on. And so every day at about this time, I think, “Ooh, did I leave the microphone on because I do a radio show immediately after this at 7:06 on WGCL in in uh Bloomington.” So, there you go. That’s why I look down every once in a while. Uh, Fever back at it on Wednesday. Wouldn’t it be great if Caitlin Clark was finally able to play? Wouldn’t that be nice? Uh, so they got a game against Golden State on Wednesday night at Gamebridge Fieldhouse. ought to be able to win that one. They lost a game the other night and and that was a shame uh against the LA Sparks. They should have won that game. They didn’t. It’ be great if Caitlyn Clark was back, but she’s got to get healthy. If you come back and and you come back too soon with a a groin pull, it isn’t going to go real well. And so, we need Caitlyn Clark healthy and back. We’re not trying to rush things. Don’t want to rush, but Caitlyn Clark’s got to get back on the floor sooner rather than later. Maybe prior to the All-Star break could be a good thing. Don Hine, legendary WTR13 sports anchor, passed away. 35 years at WTR with Bob Gregory for for most of that time. Saw a great piece. Rich and I talking to Bob Gregory uh about Don Hine. It was just outstanding. I mean, Bob Gregory as a weather guy here in town just the the king, right? And so good to see him again. Uh sad that Donheim passed. Worked with him for a scoch a little bit at WIBC. Uh he came to WIBC and did some news anchoring for us. Very very nice human being. A little we’ll call it an allergy that he had to computers. Didn’t like the computer set up at WIBC and that was a problem. But what are you going to do? Still really really nice guy. awesome uh individual and uh our best to his family. Let’s celebrate some birthdays, shall we? Ed Holdway celebrating a birthday. Sabrina Iikenburgger, happy birthday. John Garin, happy birthday. Harold Robinson. Marshia Solder Holm celebrating a birthday. The great Chrissy Meyers celebrating a birthday. The great Jay Chapman. Woof boom. Let’s go. Celebrating a birthday. Uh Reeve Musk, happy birthday. Tim Coverdale, happy birthday. Samuel Hughes and the great Charlie, Wayne Markin, celebrating a birthday. Played uh soccer with Wayne. We called him Charlie because that was his dad’s name. Just an absolutely awesome dude. Uh uh one of a many fine graduates of New Alb High School. If today’s your birthday, you celebrate like hell. If it’s not your birthday, you celebrate somebody else. That’s best done with an honest and specific compliment. and and it just lift each other up. Don’t pull each other down. Again, it’s uh historic shirt week. So, we’re uh we’re wearing old shirts that I’ve saved for a variety of reasons. Uh the Twisted Gazette, a fond memory. I’ve got every ep every uh every publication of the Twisted Gazette up in a box. Back in the day, you typed, right? you had to type a newsletter and then you got a a piece of software like Quark or I mean you didn’t have an easy there wasn’t an easy solution to making a newsletter. There wasn’t and so it was tough and for a while you had to type and be really really specific and be a really good typist if you were going to do that kind of thing. What are you going to do again? We are going to give away one of the six prizes this afternoon. the perfectly calibrated, incredibly prize w incredible prize wheel and and I can’t wait for that. Can’t wait to talk to you a little bit later today. Can’t wait to talk to you in 10 minutes on the radio at WGCL Bloomington’s voice. Download the Bloomington’s Voice app. Just search Bloomington’s Voice. You got another two hours of this this morning. Let’s go.

The Pacers are the perfect team for Jay Huffs skill set. This makes the bitter pill that was losing Myles more digestible and it frees up cap space so we don't need to breakup this awesome bench or lose these these promising young talent we have. Brilliant move by the Indiana Pacers 🏀

Again, like last season, the Colts' W-L success relies on the success or failure of QB play.
