NY Knicks Free Agency Rumors ft. Bradley Beal & Marcus Smart

With the Knicks being far enough under the second apron, they can go out and sign a player to a veteran of minimum contract. And with rumors surrounding Bradley Beal, and Marcus Smart, we got to talk about it on today’s show. First though, I’ll just open up the comments section for all of the real ones watching today’s show. Who would you rather have on this team? Knicks have enough money for one guy. Is it Beal? Appreciate everybody for rolling in as we react to the latest rumors that surround Bradley Beal and Marcus Smart. At the current moment of filming this video, which is Monday at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time, Bradley Beal is not yet a free agent, and Marcus Smart is not yet a free agent. But from what we know, from what we know, that could change at any moment as both players are rumored to be being bought out at this point. The reason the Knicks are able to sign one of these guys is because Gershon Yabacelli took a discount. He was reportedly going to sign a 2-year deal worth $12 million. That would be the full taxpayer bid level exception, but he took just enough money less than that. The Knicks find themselves at $3.7 million below the second apron. meaning they have enough money to sign one veteran a minimum player which at this point I think Beal and Smart would be if they are bought out because they’d be being paid a lot of money by their former team and you have enough money for a second round exception deal which I believe is going to go to Mohamad Diara. So the Knicks at this point are $24.1 million in committed salary while they have to stay under that second apron of $27.8 $8 million. By the hair of their chinny chin chin, they are able to afford someone on the veteran minimum. And it sounds like Bradley Beal could be a free agent here relatively soon. The rumors around the NBA are that Beal and the Phoenix Suns are working towards a deal that would make him a free agent. The Athletic wrote this about Beal saying, “The Suns and Beal are increasingly optimistic that the two sides will agree to a two terms on a buyout. The goal for the Suns is to negotiate a buyout, wave him, and then stretch his remaining salary over 5 years, which would reduce his annual cap hit on their books. The move would not only get Phoenix out of the second apron, but also get out of the luxury tax altogether. So, Phoenix is trying to save some money on the cap now while also saving money on the future cap. At 32 years old, Bradley Beal can still play. Last year, averaged 17 points per game, shot almost 50% from the field, and shot almost 40% from three. Look, I would love Bradley Beal on the veteran minimum. I do wonder though how much his injuries not only have taken away from who he could be as a player, but how much those injuries are going to roll into his future career and prevent him from getting on the floor. Cuz he hasn’t played in more than 53 games one time in the last four years. When you play 53, 53, 50, and 40, one, you’re not even eligible to make an allNBA team. You got to play 65 games to do that. But you’re missing just as many games as you are playing. And I sometimes wonder is are you really hurt or are you sitting out so you don’t get hurt and you’re chilling and still collecting those paychecks? Guy could still play. You see the numbers on screen. That guy for a veteran a minimum if he’s willing to play 65 70 games. I’m all in on that. The question I would ask him is, do you still love basketball? Because players that love basketball want to be on the floor. They want to play basketball. And from things you’ve heard in Phoenix and really just the raw number of games he has played, I think it’s a fair question to ask, do you still love playing basketball? Or are you in love with being an NBA player, which means you get paid hundreds of million dollars even if you do not play? Like the facts are the facts. Bradley Beal on a veteran minimum would be a hell of a move for the New York Nixon, a hell of a move for any team out there. There’s not many people walking this earth that can roll out of bed, get you 17 plus points per night and shoot 50 and 40 from the field. And where the Knicks roster sits at right now with the starting lineup of projected starting lineup of Brunson Bridges, Anobi, Towns, and Robinson with McBride, Colit, Clarkson, Dier, Hart, Yaviselli, and Hucky. You could use another guy that averages 17 points per game and shoots 40% from three. It can guard a little bit. It can move without the ball. and straight up just create shots for themselves and others. Like as hype as I am about Jordan Clarkson on the Vetmin, Bradley Beal is a significant significantly better player than him at this point. Unfortunately, at least off the initial reports, things could change. We know how the life of the NBA news cycle goes. Things change at like that. Fred Catz of the Athletics saying Beal could consider joining if he is bought out by the Suns. The teams include the Clippers, Warriors, Lakers, and Bucks. And I assume that if he is cut, more teams will reach out. And I’m hoping that the New York Knicks are one of those teams. I’m interested in him. My question to myself is, am I more interested in him or Marcus Smart? We’ll break down Smart coming up in a second. So, if you love the Knicks and you absolutely hate the Celtics and you want to keep dominating that organization, hit that sub button right now. Evan Sidry, who covers the NBA, tweeted this out. Rival teams are monitoring Marcus Smart’s future with the Wizards in case a buyout becomes an option. Washington has received little trade interest on Smart, but plenty of contenders would aggressively pursue him as a free agent. Smart is on a $21.6 million expiring contract. And if Marcus Smart is bought out by the Washington Wizards, I am very interested in signing him to the New York Knicks. Still just 31 years old, someone that has not played really all that much or all that well over the last couple of seasons. He played 34 games last year. Half of them coming from the Memphis Grizzlies. Then he was traded for the Washington Wizards. And to be honest with you, I don’t blame him for not wanting to be a Wizard and maybe not even wanting to be a Memphis Grizzly. And he had a rough go at things. Traded for the Boston Celtics, a team that he grew up on and had to watch them win a championship. I still think he can play. I still think there are things that he does at an NBA level and he can still get it done on the defensive end. He competes. He’s got a high defensive IQ. He is a workh hard type of player. He does the dirty work. And the Knicks could use another guy like that. They need someone that’s willing to get in your face, willing to rough you up a little bit, willing to do whatever it takes to win a basketball game. Marcus Smart has those qualities. Most importantly, he can still D the f up. And you need guys that could do that. And the Knicks and Smart, they have been linked together for some time. I’ve been covering this team every single day going on the fourth NBA season and I have heard rumor after rumor after rumor about Smart and the Knicks. The Knicks were linked to Smart actually prior to last year. They were then linked again at the NBA trade deadline. So keep your eyes on that. And to be honest with you, I don’t hate a backcourt of Brunson and Smart. I don’t want Marcus Smart starting, but if you told me you wanted to run with Jaylen Brunson, Marcus Smart, Male Bridges, OG Anobi, and Carl Anthony Towns to close out a game, I don’t hate that. I actually somewhat like it. Someone that could play alongside Brunson, can be your point of attack defender, can play off ball. I don’t need him shooting every single game-winning shot like he did with the Boston Celtics. But there are things that I really like about Marcus Smart’s game, especially if it’s coming on the veteran minimum. I would sign him. I would also sign Bradley Beal, but I only get to sign one of them. And old, you know what? You only get to sign one of them on today’s show because that’s that’s the reality. Who would you choose? I think I lean Marcus Smart here over Bradley Beal just because I think Beal to be effective needs the ball a little bit more. Doesn’t nearly give you what Smart does on defense. And Smart’s just a player that is about grit and grind. And I think he fits the New York Knicks culture a little bit more. He can handle, he can play off ball, and he defends at a much higher rate. I don’t know how many how much minutes are going to be here, but if you told me the Knicks bench was smart along with Clarkson, Hart, and Yabiselli, it’s pretty damn good. And I would take that and it’d be really damn cool if you got to see Marcus Smart, a Nick hit some big shots against the Celtics and once again end their season.
