Should Celtics Go After Bradley Beal AND Damian Lillard? | Big 3 NBA Podcast w/ Washburn & Blakely

[Music] up for the layup. Oh, blocked by James. Larry Burns scores 16 points. Look at the Boston players. But Michael Jordan is not only the best basketball player, but he’s the most exciting basketball player to ever play. Fires away in 51. Hello. Hello. Welcome to the Big Three NBA podcast. As Blake, Quani Lunis, Gary Washburn, the usual crew is together as usual. How are you two doing? Let’s check in. We haven’t checked in in a while. I’m doing wonderful. You know why I’m doing wonderful. Why? This has been a week of really cool holidays for me. Gary hates checking in. But thank you. I want to hear about these holidays. Tell us. I mean, first, yesterday the fried was National Fried Chicken Day. Sir, don’t be a stereotype. Shout out Shout out to all the chicken makers out there. Uh especially that that that one particular uh folks who took care took care of your boy yesterday in a good way. Uh the man was off the chain. Gary Gary don’t want to be part of this segment. Clearly he’s not he’s not a talking about he’s like they talking about chicken. I don’t need to be around. No no. He’s like oh lord know they talking. But today today is another holiday. We got uh black women in sports uh day. So, you know, shout out to Quani Mother was a day. Thank you. All the women out there, you know, sisters are putting it down in the sports game. So, shout out to all y’all. Uh, and you know, even though it’s not a holiday, but it feels like it’s a holiday because it comes around every time this time of year, which is summerly, which we’ll get into. You like that? See that? Well done. Well done. See, me and Quanie, see, me and Quie have had a long debriefing. So, we like on the same page now. Gary, wait, Gary, how come on, you got to check in with us. How you doing? How you been? excited to go to Vegas. What’s going on? Yeah, everything is everything is everything is good. Everything is good. No complaints. Yep. That’s what we love to hear though. Yeah, I appreciate that. Yeah. Thank you, Connie. I try. I try. All right. All right, let’s get right into it. Mentioned Summer League Sherrod July 11th is when it all begins. The Celtics will play the Grizzlies at 400 PM Eastern time in Vegas. They’ll play the Knicks, the Heat, and the Lakers, and then game five’s TBD at this point. But overall, what are your expectations from this summer league roster for the Celtics? Well, if you’re thinking about finding pieces to your NBA championship building team, this ain’t the place to be. Uh, summer league is not about that life. Summer League is I mean it’s in many many respects it’s kind of like a structured pickup game. Uh there are things that you will see in summer league that you will not see in NBA games. If a guy has a threeon-one break, he’s usually looking to give it to one of his teammates and set them up. Summer League, no, he’s trying to get to the cup. Uh he’s trying to get his points, his buckets. Uh that being said, for the Celtics, I’m looking to see I really want to see Hugo. Uh I I really and even if he doesn’t play a lot of minutes, I still want to see him play. Uh the Williams kid, uh second round pick, I’m I’m curious to see what he can do. Uh because the Celtics, one of one of the cool things about the way they’re structured this year is that there’s so many opportunities for guys to make an impression, a favorable impression in summer league and position themselves to possibly be with this team when the season starts. So, it’ll be interesting to see whether guys can kind of figure out how to stand out for all the right reasons as opposed to standing out for what most guys in summer league stand out for, which is shot chucking, brick laying, uh you know, trying to do more than they should uh out there on the floor. Uh let’s see who can let the game kind of come to them and show that they frankly have a place in this league. Yeah. Uh, I agree with Sherrod and unfortunately uh that uh I’m looking forward to the to the draft picks. Uh Max Schuga, that’s the guy that from uh the shooter. Uh the last pick of the draft, Amari Williams, the kid from Kentucky. And then Hugo Ugo Ugo Gonzalez. Take out the H for, you know, if you want to sound like a, you know, American, say Hugo. Uh, but it’s not Hugo, it’s Ugo. Uh, Gonzalez. I’m ex I’m excited to see I’m glad he’s playing in summer league. Let’s see. You know, I don’t know if he’s gonna play in all four games or five games, but let’s see what he does in in the first um couple of games for the Celtics. And you know, uh, a guy that I reported, uh, is going to be playing Kenneth Loftton Jr., big guy. I was waiting for you to bring a big fella, Gary. I I purposely did not put his name in my plan. Stop it. Sometimes you just keep forgetting. Don’t do that. I didn’t do that because I wanted you to come up with it. You Gary, that’s literally the only interesting player on this summer league team. Let’s be real. Let’s be real. Was somebody else coming up with a good idea? See, I thought of that, but I I wanted you to want you to think of it first. Credit for having a a good question. You can rack your mind. Come on, Sherrod. Anyway, uh I’m I’m looking forward to this like Yeah, it was your idea, Sherrod. You’re right. You didn’t say nothing. Way to go. You Here we go. It’s It’s thirsty time. It’s thirsty time. So early. We’re five minutes in. It was your story, G. I’m g you the D. I’m dropping the dime to you. Oh, there we go. Anyway, I’m looking forward to Kenneth Loftton to see if he can make his way to training camp. You know, he’s only 22 years old. I don’t know what kind of shape he’s in. That’s everybody’s been asking. Um, someone from the Celtics was like, “Well, you know, he’s on this team, but you know, if you really it’s not that big of a deal.” And I was like, when I post this, um, there’s going to be days of discussions about him and whether he could even start for the Celtics cuz and like to be funny, but like you know, he’s this is going to be a big deal and it was and my social media page was back and forth of debates about Kenneth Loftton Jr. So, let’s hope that he’s in good condition, good shape, and can make an impact out there and they can, you know, they’re playing, they’re not a high profile team. They’re playing three of their four games in the small gym. They don’t, you know, so so you know when you don’t play in the big gym, that shows you what the league thinks of your summer league team. You JV, you’re on the JV. Yeah. Yeah. Basically JV floor, the Cox Pavilion floor. They play summer league. They play one game in Thomas and Mack and that’s against the Lakers. Lakers. Yeah. So uh so you would uh so we’ll see under the radar. Matt Reynolds is a coach. We all like Matt’s good guy. Um, we’ll see what they can do in terms of, let’s be honest, like winning some games, playing together. Let’s see what Jordan Walsh has. You know, he should be dominating this. That’s another thing I’m looking forward. Jordan Walsh, we need you to dominate summer league. You’re in your third year. That’s this is your last year of summer league. It should be. If you going four and five years of summer league, that’s a problem. So, you should be one of the best players on the floor at any game. Maybe if you’re playing Cooper Flagging them, maybe not, but you should be the best player on the floor at all at most of the times in your third summer league. I want to see Jordan develop. Last year, he struggled uh he didn’t play with the confidence and I need to see more out of Jordan Walsh. Let’s see like, okay, Jordan, it’s your time. you know, you’re, you know, this is your third, like, okay, Jordan, let’s do this. Like, he needs to be a contributor this year. Well, you lead into our next conversation very smoothly. All that being said, looking at this roster, who actually has the best shot of playing in the regular season next year. What do you think, Gary? Uh, I’m gonna say Baylor, uh, Shyman. He’s going to be there, too. Baylor’s in his second year. Uh he had a good end good last 20 25 games. He he got Joe’s trust. So I think he should make that natural transition. He’s playing for being that eighth or ninth slot, right? Because you look at the starting five, you know, if they you keep Anthony Simons and we don’t know about guys like George Niang is if he’s going to be um on this team, but if you look at, you know, Hower, we’ll see what happens in October by October. But Shyman’s going to be a guy who could get seventh or eighth man, who could be part of that second unit. And he’s this is the first step for him to prove, hey, I’m worthy of those minutes. I can play defense like my my hair is on fire. I can w I can knock down the three. I can be that productive player that can contribute to an NBA team. He is not a young guy. He’s he’s going on 25. So, it’s his time and he needs to have an impression. So, I’m picking him is to be the most likely to make a contribution to this season on this team. I’m going to I’m going to uh roll the dice and go with Jordan Walsh. Uh I I just I like this dude. Uh I don’t like what I’ve seen out of him so far, but I do like his upside. I do like his potential. I do think that he he doesn’t even have to become a great shooter. Become a 3D guy. I mean, if he can get to the point where he can start knocking down the corner three with some semblance of consistency, he’s going to play. He will have a role because he’s a better defender than Baylor. Uh, and that is going to, I think, give him a chance to set himself apart from the rest because the Celtics, they got a bunch of guys who who can shoot the ball. We know that even with the players who aren’t going to be with them going forward, guys like Porzingis, you know, guys like Drew Holiday, they still have more than enough guys who can knock down shots. But do they have wing defenders? Do they have guys that can play at the other end of the floor that can conversely play that well there and give you a little bit of juice at the offensive end? I think this is going to be the the summer for Jordan to break through and show that he is more than, you know, just a guy that’s just running around playing good defense every now and then. And and remember, uh Jordan is a pretty young guy when he came into the league. So really, you know, he’s at a point, I think, from a maturation standpoint to where I think his skills, his experience, and I think his ability to execute what they’re looking for, I think, is all going to come together uh much closer now than it did last year. Uh and he’s going to be a guy that’s going to contribute not only in summer league, but also uh in the regular season as that seven, eight, ninth man kind of guy. That makes sense. Before we move on though, for those of you that are listening, we want to ask that you subscribe to the podcast, like, leave a review. Looks like he’s already rehabbing. What do you make of that? Because of course, social media is already freaking out whether this is good. Everyone’s a doctor on the internet, but what do you think in your just strictly basketball opinions? Well, I mean, Gary’s gonna probably say something like he gonna be ready by season open or something like that. That’s what people are saying actually. But but that’s not going to happen. You know, Gary Gary, that ain’t gonna happen. Uh it’s probably giving us hope. I mean, I I think that for me the biggest thing with Tatum, this injury is going to heal over time, but where’s his confidence and comfort level in the journey to getting him back there? Uh, and I think this is another this is a very clear example that Tatum is progressing to the point where he wants to share that progress with the rest of the world. Uh, and and that’s that’s a good thing. I think it’s a really good thing. Now, does this mean that he’s ahead of schedule or anything like that? I don’t think so. Um, but it shows that he is making progress because, you know, I think as he gets closer and closer to getting back on the floor, he wants to put more and more distance between that lasting image that people have of him laying on the ground, you know, writhing in pain. Uh, and this is another opportunity for him to put a little bit of separation and frankly continue to evolve the narrative around where he’s at now. you know, not so much, you know, Jason Tatum is out with an Achilles injury, but more so Jason Tatum is on the men from an Achilles injury, and it may not seem like that big a deal, but for someone like Jason Tatum, who is not used to being hurt. he’s not used to having to, you know, rehab or anything like that. Those are some of the baby steps that I think are going to help him, not only in terms of his physical, you know, uh, return to form, but also just mentally and emotionally be in the right state of mind so that he can continue to kick ass and rehab and get back on the court sooner rather than later. Yeah, I think it’s a good sign that he’s walking in the pool, but let’s be honest, like, he’s not going to make he’s not going to be back in six months. like, you know, this is good that he’s I think it the encouraging part is he’s attacking his rehab and he is being, you know, prudent about getting out there and doing his best and making sure that he skips no steps. And I think it’s good that he’s now walking. Obviously, he’s still going to have a boot for for a couple of week more weeks or whatever, but he’s able to take the boot off and to walk in the pool with no pressure. And that’s I think that’s a good thing. But I just I don’t want the fans to get excited and think that somehow he didn’t tear his Achilles. It’s a very serious injury. It’s been what um work going on two months now, but six weeks um about six weeks. Like let him take his time, heal on his own heal on his own time and he’ll be ready when he’s supposed to be ready. That’s but I do think it’s a good sign that he’s and that you know mentally he’s feeling uh you know up to it. He’s feeling happy. He’s feeling you know like he’s he’s not down. I know he left um uh like a a thing that said, you know, day 45, man, it’s hard, you know, and and I think he’s going to go through his ups and downs, but I think it’s good for him to uh pivot and say, “Hey, look at me now. I am literally walking in the pool. I’m making progress.” Yeah. I I and just to kind of piggy back off what Gary’s saying, that for me was is the one thing I worry most about what Jason Tatum is just the mental side of this recovery. Uh because this is a guy who’s not used to not being able to do what he’s what he wants to do with his body in the offseason. Uh he’s used to building it to be stronger and more formidable going forward as opposed to building it to get back to where he was. Uh, and that I I think for Tatum, uh, this is a entirely difficult, uh, mental adjustment, more so than the physical part of it. Uh, I think he’s going to he’s going to ace that part. Physically, he’s I think he’ll be fine. Uh, I just I worry about just can he fight through just the mental challenges that come about when you’re dealing with something like this and you’ve never dealt with something like this before. So, um, good. It’s good to me. I love seeing those type of videos out there because again it shows where his head is at right now and that’s in a good place. That’s that’s good for him, good for the Celtics, everyone. And again, it gives people hope, which I think is the biggest thing for Celtics fans right now. But while we’re on the subject of Jason Tatum, his former babysitter, also an NBA all-star, Bradley Beal, has been making the news routes as well. Like, what you talking about? The way his face was so confused. Excuse like who is she going? Who are we talking about? So he’s reportedly open to a buyout and last week Gary we went viral due to your one opinion on Dame dollar dollar sign but what do you think or or Shiran Dame 75 75 on a dollar inflation? But what do you guys think at this point? Should the Celtics just go all out and just shoot their shot everywhere? So, Gary, what you think? No, no, no. Not on this. Not on this one. No. Bradley Beal is uh how put this I mean he’s a guy who was a very very good player in Washington. Past tense. See that? and the Wizards gave him a really unbelievable deal with the no trade clause and all that money and then he ever since then he’s just not been the same player. He’s been often injured. He’s not a guy that’s I mean and this is a guy who I thought was on the headed to not a say sure Hall of Fame but being one of the top players in the league, right? being a top 20 player and then suddenly when John Wall left Washington and it was Bill’s team and it just since then it’s just he’s been just a shell of himself always hurt not contributing to winning and then making a whole lot of money. The Celtics want no part of that. this is not he cannot help them do anything this year like you know I just what I said he’s 32 now like it’s just to me he had a uh good first seven eight years of his career but it has just been uh you know horsesville since then and He needs the Celtics could stay a far away. Have him go someplace and try to win a championship, but not in Boston. No, this is not not for the Celtics. Stay out of this one. Wait, quick follow up. You mentioned he being a shell of himself and injuries aside, if he’s not the number one, number two player on a team like Boston, similar to what you said about Damen Lillard, why couldn’t he contribute? Again, injuries aside, do you think it wouldn’t Wouldn’t it motivate him? could it motivate him? I just don’t think physically I don’t think physically he is just what he once was. If you look at his numbers, one, he hasn’t played more than 60 games since 2018-19 where he played all 82, but since then he is he put up 31.3 points a game four years ago is second to last year in Washington and then he essentially sorry he’s third to last year in Washington and then since then the games played has gone down, the numbers have gone down like It’s just he’s a declining player. Some guys, you know, not everybody’s Kobe, not everybody’s LeBron. They’re going to play their best basketball, you know, at uh 35 until they’re 36. Some guys lose it at 30. Some guys when their body tells them, I ain’t for this knife no more. Bradley Bill’s best 27 years old. Since then, he has just been in decline and he’s not been productive. And 53 games last year, 53 games the year before, 50 games the year before that, 40 games the year before that. Like, and you’re paying him $50 million. I’m not talking about the if they the the Suns buy him out. You But no, I just don’t think the Celtics should be interested. And as much as I think Tatum’s like, “Yeah, that’s my guy.” I don’t think Tatum would think, oh yeah, we need to bring him on and and and put him next. I mean, because you already have Anthony Simons now. So, like I I just don’t nah, I don’t know what Sherrod thinks. I’m sure Sherrod want to sign into a max deal. Sher want sign to a max deal. I don’t max deal. Look, you get a multi-time allstar. somebody who could, you know, babysit Deuce. Make Tatum feel comfortable with that because he already said Tatum. Might as well babysit his son, too. No, I’m crying. I I No, I I agree with Gary. I mean, it it’s just a horrible idea to bring him in. Uh I just don’t think he gives you enough bang for your buck. Uh and and the thing about Lillard is this. Lillard has a clear and undeniable skill set that you can see Boston utilizing. uh even if he isn’t dame of old uh because his ability to knock down shots in clutch situation, the depth from which he can still shoot. Uh he may not be able to, you know, break guys off the dribble like he used to, but because he has such great range, he’s still going to be able to get his shot off more times than not. And when you put a guy with that type of offensive capability on the floor with a Jason Tatum, with a Jaylen Brown, with a Derek White, they’re going to get some great looks and great opportunities to score, it’s just a matter of is this a place that Dame is going to feel comfortable being at? because from a basketball standpoint, uh, he’s probably not going to find a better situation to walk into as far as what they have, what you can offer, and whether they are in that championship cauldron of of teams that are competing at the highest of levels. Uh, and it makes it just makes more sense to give to go with Dame than it does uh, you know, Bill. And none of us will know what that buyout is going to look like, but Bradley Bill is going to get his money. Uh, and you know, and Dame is is similar to that, but you know that Dame is probably going to be a lighter load moneywise. So, you’re getting to me, you’re getting the more the better fit of a player at probably a better price tag. Uh, and as we know, the Celtics are very very consumed by how much they’re going to be paying for this team. Uh, so yeah, I I would I would pass on uh Bill and and go all in on Dame. This is so random, but I think I feel like I’ve mentioned this before. I would love to see journalists and front office staff swap jobs for one day. Oh god. Just let them make whatever moves they wanted to, but they have to be like true veteran sport journalists, not like fans or whatever. They have to like really basketball because I would love to see these moves. Well, anything else you’re looking forward to for these the Celtics? I’m looking I’m looking forward to just really getting through this summer and getting on to next season because it it is I mean it it’s one of those rare opportunities where you have a team that hasn’t broken itself down to being a non- championship contender but has created enough space where you may be finding one or two guys next season who are going to be around and ma major factors in them contending. Uh the Anthony Simon situation is fascinating to me. I I I don’t have a feel one way or the other what they’re going to do with with him. Uh because this as a still a really young guy who’s shown the ability to score in bunches. Uh and the idea of of you know, a year from now having him with Tatum and Brown, uh it could be that could be really really special. And you know, we’ll see how things play out with Dame. Um that’s that’s going to be definitely, you know, a major major factor for some team going forward. Um but yeah, I mean I I just want us to get through the summer, you know, get get a little Baylor Shimon highlights. Uh show my man Jordan Walsh do his thing. Gary’s guy Kenny Payton Jr. or um or not Payton. Um Loftton. There we go. Never mind. Shad already messed up my man’s name. You know what? You know, you know what? You ain’t right. You ain’t right. And I were talking about Gary Payeyton earlier. Oh, don’t do that. Big three is in Boston this weekend. Funny. Explain to Gary what we’re talking about. So, Big Three is in Boston upcoming weekend. Yeah. Who’s their coach, buddy? The 13th, right? Yes. Gary Payton is coaching the Boston Ballhogs. The first time Boston had a team. And then this is a a cool stay tuned. My podcast has questions. We’ll have a special guest. I won’t say who it is. Gary Payton. No. Maybe. No. No. Maybe not. Is water ice cube. That was so easy. That was the worst. The worst hit ever. The might. You might as well said straight out of Compton or something. Family few would hate to see me. We were talking about boy. You might as well say question boy. Oh my god. Say Craig. Come on. Say got say my my new dad got fired on his day off. Like you might as well said that. I know. I know. Today is a good day. Today’s a good day. It’s a good day. Today is a good day. But yes, a lot of basketball in Boston as usual. As it should be. It’s a Boston. Also, Jaylen’s throwing a a Well, this it’ll probably be too late for those listening now, but Jaylen’s having a comedy night, the 7th. Again, by the time you’re listening, it would have happened already. So, sorry. But actually, another thing, you guys saw the ticket. He brought 200 tickets to Was it Canoby Lake? Canopy Lake, I think. Yeah. And just invited a bunch of kids from Boston to go there. That’s awesome. I I think that’s really beautiful what he’s doing in the community of Boston, especially not being from here. He planted them roots though. But this is the He did but this is what I mean this is what NBA players should be doing. I mean you may not be from that city that you play in but that but they rock with you when they don’t have to. Uh and Jaylen is I I think he’s he’s showing some love and respect to those folks. He doesn’t say I mean he does a lot of that stuff you know in in back in Georgia you know even that’s where he’s from but he doesn’t spend that much time there. Uh, but he still gives back. So, I mean, that’s much respect to JB on that. Yeah, like you said, it’s something that they should It’s funny that it becomes commendable when someone’s doing something that they should be doing, but hopefully he can set an example throughout the league as well. And I know there a lot of players that do it low-key, like Kyrie, like, you know, he’s donated a lot of money without really making a fuss about it, but that’s what it should be about. Yeah. One of the players that people just vilified for years and years and years was Rasheed Wallace. And he did so much stuff behind the scenes uh back in Philly and in Detroit. Uh when when Michigan and Flint was going through the water uh crisis that they had, he was one of the more outspoken athletes and he wasn’t even playing then. He was just just in the neighborhood. Uh was was very vocal about, you know, trying to get that that turned around. So, uh, yeah, athletes, you know, some of them just get it. They just don’t want the attention that comes with them getting it, right? They just want to do Kyrie. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Ky Yeah. Kyrie, he uh when he was in Boston, you’ll love this. And we can leave on this. Um, he had donated his jersey to uh a a group that was working on water filtration systems in in a country in Africa. And Kyrie didn’t want to talk about it. And I’m like, “Okay, I’m still going to write this story, but right, I heard about it.” Yeah. But I mean, and to the point where he was just like, “No, no, no, no, no.” And I literally showed him a picture of him holding up the jersey that they were promoting. So, I’m like, “Don’t act like this ain’t happen.” Yeah. I saw this, but but much respect for him to to recognize that’s something that he wanted to do. He just didn’t want to talk about it. And again, didn’t like that, but I respect that. And that’s ultimately what I think a lot of these these athletes uh really need to think more and more about is like am I doing something that’s going to get me likes or am I doing stuff that’s going to get me respect and which one of those matters more to me? Uh so you know let’s leave and that that’s that’s all I got. I’m a positive note to end on anything from you Gary. Uh go Cal uh go Compton. Oh god. Anyway, what is your thought? I’m sorry. Anyway, uh I think it hopefully this the Celtics, we’ll see what they do in terms of the rest of the summer, whether they make any moves, get under the obviously going to get under the second apron. I’d like to still see them go after Dame Dame Dollar Dame or Sherrod Dame 75 Cent. Um Oh my god. But but I definitely would like to see them uh go after go after him and uh we’ll see how that goes. At least Gary’s not promoting going after Carmelo Anthony. Oh my gosh. It will never end. It’ll never end. You’re gonna be at the Hall of Fame, right Gary? I’ll be there. I know you’ll be there with your big Syracuse Letterman’s on. Oh my gosh. On that note, the perfect time to wrap up this podcast. Oh my goodness. Let’s see how quickly I can read this before we get out of here. For those of you listening to the show, we ask that you subscribe to the podcast. Like, leave a review. 1. Both are buyouts can sign them both for the low, both have connections with Tatum. Great buy low options. I think we can also declare Jordan Walsh another one of brads draft misses .

  3. But would either Dame or Beal take a vet minimum because they were just bought out? I feel like that’s the only way the money would work with those guys
