Appreciate you sticking with us throughout all the time on the program. The best. The best. Uh fun to see a bunch of you out at the arena at Huntsman Center. Uh night one of summer league was a good game. Super fun. VG Edgecom stole the show. Very Donovan Mitchellesque. Uh, from a Jazz standpoint, we’ll talk about it. It was exactly what you should have expected when it comes to Ace Bailey, when it comes to Walt Clayton. I honestly didn’t leave with a lot of surprises in any way, shape, or form. More reconfirmations of everything I would have thought. We’ll talk about it um coming up. And Ricky Rubio opened up very emotionally about his time in the NBA and where he is mentally uh in his life right now. I want to share that with all of you as well. plus one geeky draft note because that’s what I do. Uh just to kind of remind everyone of what we’re watching. But let’s start with Ace Bailey because that’s where the headlines are. That’s where the spotlights are. We’re in it. Like ESPN’s leading with it. It’s we’ve got our guy that everyone’s going to watch and frankly feels like people are rooting for it to go wrong, not right. But maybe that’s just my own personal jazz bias. I I thought he was exactly what I would have thought he was. He ended three of 13. He had eight points. He had seven rebounds. He an assist. He had the worst plus minus of anyone in the game other than Armstrong of Philadelphia. It’s kind of what I thought. He’s crazy. Long, athletic, active, exuberant, exactly what you expect. If you watched him at Ruters, this is what you were going to probably see. Um, and what I what I mean by that is you have A world-class athlete with an ill-refined game whose greatest strength is currently his greatest weakness and who has to like learn how to play in a different fashion. Scored about 35 points a game or something crazy in high school. Went to Ruckers. Didn’t play with a great team. If you talk to people around Ace Bailey about Ruckers, you say, “Well, if you watch him his first five games of the year, he definitely tries to incorporate everyone. He moves the ball, he does this.” And then after that, it’s like, “No, no, like you have to shoot.” There’s a story of Ron Harper kind of pulling him aside and being like, “No, no, on this roster with these players, like you’ve got to shoot.” And that’s still there. His he jumps off the like off the stage, off the floor. his length, his body, it’s just so obvious that he is the one that has the potential. His jumping is ridiculous. There was a rebound where he just went up three feet, four feet higher than everyone else to grab the rebound on a free throw. Maybe he’s playing harder than everyone on a free throw also, but the fact that he can do that. There was another play again where like everyone had one level of jump and athleticism and Ace Bailey’s length was just a different piece. And then there’s the much talked about block. If you’ve seen it, it’s pretty awesome. Guys driving the basket, has pretty decent separation, tries to put it up, and Bailey spikes it off the glass. And then there was terrible shot selection in the second half as he got tired. And I thought guys were really tired in this game. It was very physical, very chippy. There was lots of kind of up and down frantic action. And I thought guys got tired. As Bailey got tired, I thought he regressed back probably to the appro to to kind of like what he knows. He lacks the ability to make plays off the dribble. So with that right now and where he is as a player and the inability to make plays off the dribble means that then his his shot window which when a moment ago I said his strength is the same as his weakness. His strength is that he ab can get a shot off anytime he wants and his weakness is he can get off a shot anytime he wants. His length is that great that he can just get a shot off. The problem is he can just get a shot off. So as he gets tired and he lacks the ball handling skills to maybe make the plays that he needs to make to clear and get something else. we end up with a fadeaway one step quick release jumper. The other one is that the Jazz are working very hard offensively on playing 0.5 basketball where instead of being set play and everything being execution and waiting till the guy comes free, get the ball, drive, pass or shoot within 0.5 seconds. So, if you’re Ace Bailey and you’re playing 0.5 basketball, you drive is not a great option because you’re not a super good ball handler yet. Pass is not a natural reaction and if you’re not entirely sure where everyone is because you haven’t played with them before hard so you shoot. So, none of that is surprising. His exuberance and energy was terrific. Um, and his natural just like god-given skills are incredible. And oh, the other play I was thinking of is a left-hand drive, pull up, free throw line, rise up above everyone else, and hit the jumper. And that’s honestly where you’ve some of the comparisons I think are nuts of Trace McGrady or you know Kevin Durant type stuff but that’s was Tracy McGrady Kevin Durant type stuff. So it’s there and then the other part of it is you know all indications are he’s been terrific uh despite all the all the noise. Um we also got to see Kyle, we got to see Isaiah. We got to see Cody and we got to see Bryce Sensib play and Walter and Walt Clayton. So, let me let me jump in on a few of those. I want to start with Cody. I thought Kyle was the most interesting. So, Cody was noticeably stronger. And I gotta say, Cody’s dad was there with his awesome beard. And if you look at Cody’s dad and you look at his Cody’s brother, it is hard to believe that Cody is not gonna fill out. Maybe he’s going to be the one in the family who never does. And the lower body is still spinly. The upper body is much bigger, but he was far more aggressive, played off contact far more. Shot didn’t look dramatically different. I think he finished two of six from three, five of 12 overall, but five rebounds was dramatically different. Two of them on the offensive end, a steal, a block. It was an activity level and a confidence in conducting himself on the floor that was different. There’s a play where he goes to the basket and tries to dunk it. He certainly wasn’t doing that before. And he his handle does need to improve. He’s got a little bit of the same thing going on here where his handle’s just not great. So, when he gets the ball in the corner, his choice is kind of to shoot. Um, and so as he improves that, that should open up some other things. But I thought we saw, you know, the work he’s talked about. He’s eating 5,000 calories a day. He’s gained 22 pounds. And I thought it was clear he had lower body weight’s hard to see sometimes. Um, and it doesn’t look as obvious that he has that, but you do. You look at his dad who’s just so such a big man. You look at his brother. It’s hard to believe that Cody’s not going to have a massive growth of size and strength as he moves into adulthood. I mean, he’s still 19. So, we’ll see whether that’s the case. Um, but the I thought that of all of the guys yesterday, the one that was the most encouraging to me and looked different than he did before was Cody Williams. I know I’ve read Twitter, too. That’s not who anyone’s talking about, but I’m just telling you my thought, and I’ll explain why on the other guys here in a second. The one guy who did something that I hadn’t seen him do before that I hadn’t really wasn’t aware was Cody Williams was playing a different game than I saw out of the other guys who I’d seen before. Big box stores for Kyle Filipki and Bryce Sensah. I’m curious if the coaches are in love with their performances as everybody else is. It’s next on Locked on Jazz. That’s the wrong sounder. We are free and available on all podcasting apps as well as YouTube. Great to have you board. Ricky Rubio, some super interesting comments and we’ll have that coming up for you. So Bryce Sensabot had a very good shooting game. Had some people talking about, well that’s the last we’re going to see of Bryce Sensah. That may be true. He’s a thirdyear player. You often don’t see him long. 19 points. The seven rebounds were great. One assist, five turnovers. I honestly thought and I’m a huge Bryce Sensoff fan. So, I may watch Bryce Sensib more critically than some others because I want I really like him as a kid and I really want him to succeed. I actually thought as someone who’s a Bryce sensible fan that his performance was a little infuriating and that is if there’s anything that I think the coaching staff has tried to get across to Bryce in the last two years it’s the like it’s not just shooting’s not enough and so the seven rebounds are terrific but there’s a play where he just completely doesn’t follow a guy on a possession that leads to a layups and you know chassing my had there’s five turnovers. Three of the five I would have said were in the careless category, maybe four of the five and there was just as the game went on and again I do think fatigue was a major factor in this game for both sides. There was a at least in my opinion and maybe the coaches would disagree and maybe Bryce would disagree. There was just a little bit of a looseness that if I’m Will Hardy and I’m watching I Bryce Sens hit 42% of his threes last year. I I I know that Bryce Hensel can shoot and it looked great. His shot looks great. Um and I do love the two block shots and the five in the seven rebounds far more than I love the 19 points, frankly. But there was a little bit of a looseness to his game or carelessness at as the game moved on that I think is the number one thing that they Jazz coaching staff wants him to get rid of. Now there’s, you know, this is a little bit of like, okay, you’ve you’ve for two years you’ve played a lot of games where you lose. We’ve got to teach you how to play winning basketball. And, you know, five of eight from three is amazing. Uh, and that’s great. On the other end, five of eight from three is not sustainable, right? Like you’re not shooting 60% from three for a season. You’re going to go three of eight more often than you go five of eight. And you’re going to go two of eight anytime you go five of eight, right? Like that’s just, you know, and even if you do that, you’re you’re still seven of 16 over two games. Like it’s great. He can really shoot it. It’s a special skill. Bryce Sensib’s route to being a rotation NBA player might be the most clear of any of the players we’re going to talk about today. He’s a bonafide legit elite shooter and scorer. So, he’s got to defend well enough. He’s got to be detail-oriented enough and he’s got to do these other things to be a success. And and if he does that, he’s a rotation NBA successful player. Pretty great. If he’s not careful, he’s Gary Trent. Like, or his upsides Gary Trent, like Gary Trent averaged 18 points a game at some point in the NBA. And the only reason I say not careful is just because he’s become a minimum player. So, I’m a like Bryce is actually one of my favorite dudes and I’m a huge fan. And I found myself a little mixed baggie on that performance. I know I saw everyone else was super excited about I was not, but I also maybe because I’m such a like rooting for him so much have a higher level of what I’m hoping for and I want to see him physically engage dominating all aspects of that game. Kyle Filipowsk’s night was the most interesting of anyone. So, one, it was going up against Bona, who is also a late, you know, early second round draft pick. They’re pretty similar in like if you look at who they are. Kyle goes 31 last year and Adam Bona out of UCLA went 41. So, they were kind of like in the same group and each of them displayed their strengths to dominate the game. Bona physically outpowered Kyle for a lot and then Kyle outskilled him dramatically. Kyle’s offensive array of skills is pretty terrific. Kyle had 22 points. He had six rebounds. He had two assists. I thought actually the most exciting one was his four free throws looked awesome. His two his three-point shooting looked great. In the practice, I watched his comfort of just like letting the ball come off his hands was terrific. He made a great play where he is so late in the game. Scott Morrison ran everything through him. like this is Kyle was kind of the go-to fulcrum for the offense late in the game. And that’s where Kyle’s really skilled. And Kyle, one of the most impressive plays, and I think this is where he’s going to be great in the NBA level, is faked a handoff, turned, drove, and then kicked to the corner. There aren’t a lot of guys that can make that play. Hit I think whoever it was hit the three. Might have been Harkless or Springer. Um, I had to be heartless cuz Spring Springer didn’t make one. And then also a hard left-hand drive where he understands his body, used his power, put his shoulder into someone, cleared it. He’s It’s really super. He scored late in the game, I think, on four straight possessions. Simultaneously, Philadelphia scored on him four straight possessions. Bona would catch at the top of the key, ball fake to the wing. Bona has zero outside shot at all. He’s 16 feet away. Kyle would jump like he’s coming out of a jack in the box. Bona would drive by him, dunk her, lay it up and in. The coaching staff was like beside themselves on the sideline that Kyle Bid on that back-to-back plays and then late everything Philadelphia ran was a pick and roll to get Kyle switched and have Edgeum come downhill on Kyle and they scored on him before it. It was really the essence of where Kyle is. He’s so incredibly skilled offensively. His route is how brilliant he is offensively. In the first half, he did not rebound well enough. He got physically manhandled by Bona, who had eight fouls in the game, which is makes Summer League unique. It’s super hard for a big man to make himself impactful offensively, but with Kyle having the ball in his hands, he can do it. And then in the fourth, he dominates the game on one side and gets dominated on the other. Was a pretty fascinating question. And it was also just wildly obvious. So, I thought that was like a really good example of where Kyle is. I do think it’s really important to note though, he was the offensive fulcrum for everything going on late in the game. That’s that’s pretty awesome. And that skill set he has is there just aren’t a lot of sevenfooters that have that. He he’s going to be around this game for a long long time. Now, for him to become a regular rotation player in the NBA in years two and year three, remember just that’s where we are still way early. What position does he play? And right now what you will what I see is someone who’s offensive game is best if he’s a five and whose defensive game is best if he’s a four. It’s actually, ironically enough, it’s super similar to John Collins. And so we’ll be as time goes on where he fits and how he fits and what matchups he can play and can he get to the point where he can play any matchup because that’s going to dictate his minutes. It’s pretty interesting. Um, so those were the two headliner those were the headliners, Kyle and Bryce. And I thought Cody’s performance this Collier and Clayton played a little bit together. Those are the two guys playing summer league and they’re basically as of right now the two guys are going to battle for the starting point guard spot for the Utah Jazz this year. The youth movement is upon us. We’ll touch on that plus some very emotional comments from Ricky Rubio next on Locked on Jazz. So Isaiah Collier and Walt Clayton Jr., he launched to be called Walt, are as of the roster sits right now the two guys battling for the starting point shooting guard or point guard spot. I’ve generally moved Keonte to a shooting guard in my mind. That might not be right. could have ke and Bryce start. Um, and Bryce starts as a shooting guard. Um, Clayton, we’ll start there, was as much as exactly what I expected as Ace Bailey was. He plays in total control. He varies his pace. He subtly like notched six assists without you noticing. He had control of the game a little bit. He is a very good shooter. He only went three of eight, went two of six. Almost every three is an off the bounce three. I cannot tell if that’s because he doesn’t have the footwork lined up for the catch and shoot to get it off in time or if that’s because um he just that’s how he shoots it. his release is I was talking to Jeff Hornosk who uh pointed out to me his release is a little low. So maybe he sidestep dribbles to get that release off. I’m not sure. I want to watch that more and I want to see what the impact of that is. Maybe that’s just fine. Maybe that’s just who he is. Maybe he adjusts. I think he’s pretty skilled. I think he’ll adjust. Um I thought his variation of his athletic pacing was pretty awesome. Uh and I’m interested to watch him again tonight more closely. Isaiah Collier. I think this is a funky situation for him. Isaiah once was number one recruit in the country. Used to break everyone down. Had like you’re kind of expecting him to have that massive G-League game that he had where he goes nuts in the G- League that kind of spurred him on last year. Like that’s But I’m not sure that that’s what the coaching staff wants out of him or the summer league wants him. I think they want him to conduct, be the veteran, play the game. And I’m not sure he’s not a little bit lost inside of that. He went one of seven. He did have five assists, five rebounds. He was plus 10, which was the best plus minus of anyone on the floor along with VJ Edge. I’m not sure he’s playing a game. I’m not sure the coaching staff is asking him to play a game that’s a box score game. So, the one of seven’s not awesome. And the O3 from three is not awesome because we’re going to keep an eye on his shooting cuz that is obviously the, you know, the wart that needs to get removed. Little compound W for him. Um, but I think I’m guessing that the coaching staff really wants him to be the veteran, get them in their stuff, set the tone more than be the guy that goes out to score 24, driving the basket and showing that strength. He threw two of the most exquisite passes. One was a bounce pass through the on a fast break to Philipki. The other was one where he came in and kicked it back out. It’s awesome. Um those those plays are real. Like that is a unique skill. Uh I I thought he actually again I had a little bit of a different feeling than a lot of people. I thought his game, the shooting thing is real. We got it’s got I kind of preferred his game a little bit of the way he approached the night, the way he played. Again, I think it’s a little funky. The instinct is that he should go score 25 and dominate. I’m guessing he’s being asked to do the exact opposite. I’m going to look more into this. Um, and I actually think his impact might be subtle and more than we think it is. Uh, the other one that was really interesting was how much they trusted Isa Elijah Harkas. Harkas who was kind of trying to have the Scottie Pippen camp that Scotty Pippen had a year ago where he came out from Memphis just defended so hard they end up making the team and then ended up playing a lot. Um, a few things were interesting on Harkas. One is they had him in the game to try to slow down VJ Edge because nobody else could do it and that was their guy late in the game to try to try it. The other one is they tried him at point guard for a minute and he turned it over on back I think lost control of it on backto-back possessions. I mean the question is Parkas is incredible tenacity, plays wildly hard, awesome, but what position is he playing? Um and so I think that’s that’s a little bit of the question there. So those are my thoughts on summer league. Excited to get back at it and watch him tonight. Hopefully you can come out and join us on that. I wanted to share Ricky Rubio did two massive interviews. ones at it was at marka.com and then it also some stuff got republished at Yahoo and I’m going to read kind of straight from some of his quotes because it’s it was pretty emotional. He said, “I didn’t make friends, just teammates in the NBA. It’s my nature. Honestly, it’s hard for me to open up and connect. I haven’t known how to face conflict. I’ve seen lots of teammates with despotic attitudes and I’m not able to say you don’t talk to a waiter like that.” How am I going to say to a teammate? I just keep quiet. I just keep quiet and witness attitudes or behavior that aren’t right. Often they don’t even realize they’re stuck in a character in their ego. In the locker room, you hear nonsense like, “What kind of car do you drive? Are we really competing over who has a better car? That won’t make me a better person.” It’s interesting to read this because I remember vividly in Sacramento, Ricky’s the one leading everyone out. Like Ricky’s the one who’s a who takes everyone out to dinner and takes everyone and he’s the he’s the conduit. He says, “I was one in Minneapolis because it was the YouTube era and I had to create a character even though I didn’t want to. I never fell in love with the culture or traditions. For me, the impact the US has both generally and in basketball, they’ve turned the NBA into a show, into a business. They’ve left behind the love of basketball that’s also happening in Europe. So, what did I take from the US? What I wouldn’t do, not what I would do. Um, uh, he was talking about, um, going pro at 14 and how hard it was. He still really seems to be scarred by that. Um, he he said, “In Minnesota, I live with my best friend. One night, we went out to dinner. I didn’t speak to him for over an hour because I was stewing over a loss. I regret that. Another time they called me after a loss and I laughed and one of the coaches told me, “Don’t ever laugh after a loss.” He got very much into his mother’s cancer diagnosis in 1516. Uh, and then he says, “I thought this was super interesting. I’d like to play basketball without being Ricky Rubio, but that’s impossible. I want to play basketball, but I can’t. I’m squeezing out everything I can to see if I still can. the answers becoming clearer and clearer and what we know is that we don’t have all the answers. Not even I know. So really Ricky who has had some mental health issues and is sharing them here. He also said he had some other comments. He said um he shared about uh suicidal thoughts. He said just a very difficult thought. I don’t want to magnify it but one of the nights I was at the hotel I said I don’t want to go on not just with basketball but with life. I have a family. I have a son. But I felt that way for a second. There were some moments when everything around me was just creating a burden when I thought that my life had no sense. It’s a really moving emotional comments. Um he talked about having imposttor syndrome. He said, “When I reflect on my career, I was never satisfied because it was never enough. I wasn’t ecstatic. When I would receive an award, I would say to myself that I’m fake and that I don’t deserve this.” I remember in my third or fourth year in the NBA that I was having a hard time and I was on a bad streak and there was a journalist who was interviewing me and I opened up a little bit. I find it hard to sleep. I’m feeling bad. I had said and I in the game in a free throw a veteran player from a rival team tells me I’m going to give you advice. Don’t reveal any weak points to your to the press because they’re going to come after you. We’re all sharks here and when we smell blood we’ll come and get you. interesting to hear Ricky Rubio talk about his experience in the NBA, how he feels, etc. Pretty emotional stuff. One of the, you know, better guys everybody’s ever dealt with. Ricky really liked him an incredible amount. I did. Um, and it’s it’s sad to read and interesting, insightful to know the pain players are going through while trying to play in front of 19,000 people and and act and act a different part all the time. And also, I think his comments about, you know, he became a YouTube sensation having to be Ricky Rubio. You know, I remember Donovan Mitchell saying to me at one point, “It’s hard to be Donovan Mitchell right now.” Like, it’s very different to be Donovan Mitchell right now. This thing get this thing can run away from them and it’s harder than we probably realize. So, interesting thoughts. All right, summer league. See you tonight. Jazz 7 o’clock. We’ll be on the radio. Collins Traded!!!
The critique of Brice is wild. He played solid defense. Shot well. Made a few turnovers while playing with some guys you will never see on the floor in the NBA.
3-13 is exactly what Locke expected? Come on! I actually expected Ace to dominate these guys.
Brice is playing himself into a career backup, with terrible handles and no D, he is regulating himself to a 12-15 minutes per game on a contender. Fix this Brice, Jazz Nation hopes you succeed. Kyle, with no D, you cannot play a sieve at center.
Collier shot 14% for the game, he was out of control alot and Clay out played him in every way. Harkless I feel played himself out of a contract, if this continues.
Ricky is a good man.
Austin Ainge thought process "we won't try to tank because even when trying we'll still be a bottom 3 team." Locke… is there anything to be excited about? We got pennies on the dollar for sexton, clarkson and collins. Sure we freed up money, but the young guys seem farther away than we would have hoped.
VJ looks way more polished
Goodbye to John Collins and good luck.
I’ll say it again I think flip and Hendricks should swap positions on offense and defense. Flip being the 5 on offense and Hendricks being 5 on D
To me, Isaiah Collier’s career comp is TJ McConnell. He can direct an offense , but can’t shoot. Also a bit of a “tough guy” who doesn’t back down from anyone, and will scrap and hustle.
It seemed like Walter Clayton Jr. tried to get Ace the ball more than the others. His two jumpers were off of WCJ assists and I distinctly remember a play where he tried to get him the ball, but his back was turned. In the 2nd half Ace was chucking because of all the look-offs and not getting the ball in the first half. It was very predictable he'd do that and I personally wasn't mad at him. It's clear that his teammates need to make a concerted effort to get him the ball in places he can succeed (since he can't or doesn't make plays off the dribble). Get the young man some easy baskets…
Everyday listener. Usually on my phone in the car. Followed David since early 1990's when he was running the radio show, "The King and I." I like the casual Jazz discussion, and agree with the summer league assessment he made today.
Bust
To all the fans in here saying they wouldnt be happy with VJ at 5 got their eyes opened. I been telling people about VJ all year, he would have been an awesome pick and you dont take kon over him.
I always thought that Ricky Rubio was a decent guy, a good player and a good teammate. I wish he would not have been traded.
I biggest question mark of that game was the coaching. What was the goal of that game. Everyone play? Who’s mom handed out watermelon at halftime?
We learned a bunch of stuff we already knew.
Flip still needs another year to get strong enough and crafty enough to play the 5 on defense. But yeah his release looks money. Bona is huge. I can see where Walt’s shooting might earn him starting pg spot.
Locke, you'r cycling fan, great to see it. if you will be some time in french pyrenees (going to see tour de France or smth) give a shout. i can show you some local rides on le cols
Great pod! Agree w/you on all counts today! Can’t wait to discuss the Collins trade, lol.
Tim McMahon definitely stole your “his strength is he can get off any shot and his weakness is he can get off any shot” with no credits.
Everybody kind of improved on what they are good at. Nobody really improved on what they were bad at. Collier outside shooting, Brice turnovers, and Flip interior defense are the ones that stick out the most to me. I think Ace, Walter, and Cody just need time to develop. I was glad everyone was a little disappointed that they didn’t play their best, even though they won.
The second quarter of the Memphis game was the first time I feel like I could see the future of the jazz
