Big O and Ira Winderman – The Miami Heat got the Norman Powell Trade Right!

Big O and Ira Winderman – The Miami Heat got the Norman Powell Trade Right!

This is the Big O show. This is the Big O show. Exclusively on the Big O radio show. It’s the Acura of Penrook Pines Miami Heat and NBA Report. Here’s Ira Winderman. All right, Ira, you wanted news? I got you news. I gotta say, man, they gave up absolutely nothing. No one at no one out of their their rotation first of all. And so even the people who say they should still go with youth, youth is still here. There’s still KL Wear, there’s still Nicole Yo Yovic, there’s still Jaime Hakees Jr. There’s still Kasparos Yatricones. So they still have the youth to play off of, but now they actually can score and that matters. And and and this is why and I know it’s hard on the accurate Penrook Pines report and the Big O show to be patient, but the NBA offseason is not the NHL offseason. It’s not a date. This stuff happens over a period of time. And what the Heat showed is you don’t just jump into the first thing. You don’t just jump into Lillard. You don’t just jump into Bradley Beal. You wait for the right move at the right time. The Heat, and we have not said this in a long time, Orlando Eligary, the Heat right now are a better team than they were yesterday. And it is a long, long time before the Jimmy Butler trade before the start of the season when we can feel that, you know, give Pat Riley, Andy Ellisburg, Adam Simon, Nick Harrison, Mickey Harrison credit. They were patient and at least in the moment they came through with something where you go, hm, he got it right. There’s nothing wrong with Norman Pal, right? Like like because I know he’s a good player like because I I they gave up nothing like they gave up players who weren’t rotation players right now when I just put in my story in the Sun Sentinel. If you look at it, it’s crazy. If you look at a starting lineup of just for now, Khloe Wear, Bam Adabio, Andrew Wiggins, Tyler Herro, Noran Powell, you still have a full bench of DaVon Mitchell, Nicole Yovic, uh um Haimey Hake Jr. You have you have five quality reserves in there because Paris in there, you have that. So these guys weren’t going to be in your top 10 in any sport when you can trade your 13th and 14th man for your fifth man. Yeah, it’s a pretty good deal, isn’t it? Although he is a first string tweeter. That’s the only thing I will say about Kevin Love that I mean we did we did lose our best tweeter. You got to admit we lost our best tweeter. So that that they did gain a tweeter over there. I give them credit that they’ve got a strong and you know what and a really good guy. Kevin was you know we talk about Udonis has him moving on and who was going to be in the voice in the locker room and Bam’s a quiet guy. We know that that’s his nature. They didn’t have that. Kevin Love became that guy. He became the kind of guy who brought this spirit in the locker room. So we’ll miss that. And you know what? Kyle Anderson for what he was a throwin in a trade gave you some quality moments down the stretch. He’s a pros pro. He’s a pros pro as a 13th man. So, I give him credit. But no, the Heat got better because oh my god, until today I was sitting here going, “How the hell are they going to score?” Now, at least they have a chance. You know, they have a chance to score a bigger guard, a veteran presence. It gets a lot more interesting. That’s for sure. Doesn’t get them out of the playing. We’ll be talking about that all summer on the Acura Bench Pines Report. Well, the Heat Nation has been very entertaining over the weekend, even with the desperation of the Dane Lillard talk, which is just ridiculous when he’s not available for you for two years. I mean, that’s just like, why would I want a 36, 37 year old player two years from now? That’s kind of silly. And then the Bradley Beal stuff. Um, do they now people are thinking that this is a precursor to maybe moving Tyler for picks and then if Beal becomes available, you can just outright sign Beal and you’re probably not going to have to pay him a ton of money because he’s going to he’s going to be bought out. Nothing guy’s making $52 million. He’s not going to be hurting for bucks. I’m not as sure about that. I would think the Powell I would think the Powell trade kind of precludes the be thing because again, Bigo, you’re talking about age. You’re talking about youth. You’re talking about development. So, I I think you can have a 32-y old player. You can’t have two 32-y old players. I don’t want to become that team desperately clinging to fight out of the playin. So, I’m not sure this equals Tyler Herro. I think this makes it very less likely there’s a Lillard plan a year from now with the Achilles. I think it makes it also less likely that there is a plan for Bradley Beal right now. Because I got to tell you something, all this stuff has two parts of the equation. If you’re Bradley Beal and you want to get out of Phoenix because it didn’t work out for you, when you want to show you still can play, are you going to go to the team that has Tyler Herro, that has Norman Powell, that has Kasparis Yakionis, that has DaVon Mitchell and maybe be the fifth guard? I think that’s less likely. Or but hold on a second. But see, here here’s I’m not a bo guy. Never have been. You know that. Now, now, now if you’re able to trade Tyler and get some picks and then for, you know, you want to fill in with Beal for a year or two or something like that for a little money. Sure. Kind of understand that one because he’s just filling in the space that you need since Tyler and you picked up picks to make yourself stronger for the future. I well I don’t think in the big picture it means anything just like by adding Norman Powell big picture I don’t think you’re going deep in the playoffs either but I’m just saying it it’s better for your future if you are at least training Tyler for picks and then if you can get and then be does come now because Tyler there and so now be gets all the minutes and gets an opportunity to prove himself and all that kind of crap I’m throwing that out there. Is there any chance of that? It’s really interesting, Bigo. And and and what I’ll say here, and you can see the responses in your chat line and your super chat, is this. We know the Heat have their own first round pick next June, possibly a lottery pick. So, is there in some people’s views perhaps that this is sabotaging that? In other words, can the Heat be bad enough, let’s say, with a lineup of Bam, Tyler, and Norman Powell, just for argument sake, but I’ll even go to Big O’s thought. A lineup of Bam Adabio, Norman Powell, and Bradley Beal probably is not bad enough to get parts of Heat Nation the lottery pick that they want because we’re talking about the East where the Nets suck, where the Wizards super suck, where the Hornets are never ever ever going anywhere. And last time I checked, the Bulls aren’t any good anyway and Toronto’s a question mark. This is really interesting because for the fandom and faction out there and on your chat who say the Heat need to tank, need to bring it down to the bottom, need to reset. When you talk about resetting in NBA vernacular, you’re talking about a top five lottery pick. This team is too good right now to be too bad. It would be very hard. The top four picks in the the four lowest records in the NBA all have an equal chance at the number one pick. Right now, the Heat are not bad enough to be one of the bottom four teams in the NBA. And like you tell us every week on our Acura of Penrook Pines report, Big O with their expulter, you may never be bad enough because the guy can take chicken feathers and turn it into chicken soup because it’s what he does. So, I think they are what they are. They’re true to Pat Riley and Andy Ellisburg and the Harrisons. They will not go in the toilet for the sake of hoping to get lucky. They’ve seen it hasn’t worked for Charlotte. It hasn’t worked for Utah and other teams. Dallas, hey, they got lucky. San Antonio with Wanyama, they got lucky. OKC, it’s worked out for OKC. You know what I mean? Well, when you have a thousand lottery picks, it’ll work out for you. When you have so many years that you’ve gone 50 years without a championship, it’ll work out for you. Just a matter of Detroit is in the process of improving and let’s see where they go. They won one playoff round this year. No, they didn’t. Actually, they lost the first round to the Knicks. So, I wouldn’t I wouldn’t even go that far. I mean, let’s They weren’t supposed to beat the Knicks. The fact that they that this is the step that they were supposed to take, that was a huge step for Detroit this year overall. So, I’m just saying, listen, if you have if you have if I actually believe the Heat can draft now, so I think if you do get a bunch of picks, I think they will find a diamond in the rough. I really believe that. Four in a row. Sure, they yeah, they fi they find guys, okay, that haven’t become a star yet. But I think if you have that that that if you have that that fishnet approach and you have many picks, I just think eventually you’re going to land another one of those kind of cats and then all of a sudden you’ve turned your franchise around and now you’ve got that building block for a long time to come and that’s just something that they don’t have right now and you’re not really going to get there with this. But in the other way, at least you give yourself a chance. I don’t like the defeist attitude that, oh well, it doesn’t work for these other teams. Well, you’re not these other teams. You’re the Miami Heat. You’re a damn great organization, but you have failed to adjust to the way the rules are nowadays. And I keep thinking this whole thing about Riley’s age is screwing everything up because he’s not willing to to do the hard stuff, which is the hard reset because he doesn’t have time for that. But I’m sorry, that’s what’s best for the organization. And there’s plenty of there with the Harrisons and with Eric Spolster planning to be here for a while. They they the Harrison see a future. Eric Spolster sees a future. Here’s the other part. Let’s turn around what we just said and this is something worth considering in this time in this moment in this place with a lineup of where Adabio Wiggins Hero Norman Powell with a quality sixth man in DaVon Mitchell a quality seventh man in Nicole big let’s look at the Eastern Conference right now where you have the Cavaliers resetting a bit where you know Indiana is down they lost Miles Turner and Hallebertton out for the where, God bless him, but Mike Brown is a potential championship coach I’m still not so sure about when you’re talking about the Knicks. And what I’m saying is this, there are not many teams with this heat roster that you couldn’t look the other way and say, could they beat that team in a first round series? Yeah, they could. They could beat Detroit. They could beat Indiana. They could beat New York. They could beat Boston if Tatum doesn’t come back. They can beat Detroit. They can beat these teams with this roster. So I know you don’t want to hear it and I know heat nation doesn’t want to hear it some faction of that but the bottom line is you know what the heat are in the east right now and I cloak it with the words right now competitive I understand what Orlando Alzigary is saying is it has to be about more than right now it has to be about more than when the Panthers were playing just to win one playoff series when the Panthers decided damn it we have to win four playoff series and that’s where our hubo trade is going to be made and we’re going to go all in at the right moment moment for the right player. But but where where that is all like hollow is so you get to the finals like you did with Jimmy Butler and get embarrassed by Denver and that’s what’s going to happen because you’re not going to beat anybody. You’re not if if we’re if we’re doing this this whole thing for this year because it’s only this year that by luck a bunch of teams have key players out. So all of a sudden there’s a lull there’s a valley going on right now. in in this in this. So, we have an opportunity to make some noise with a team that really has no chance at winning a title, but we have a chance of going deep into the playoffs and ruin our draft pick for no reason at all because we’re really not building anything. You’re not going to win anything. You’re not winning a title. So, why are you doing this? That’s the part that I don’t understand. I’d rather try to build win everything. He lived to be competitive. Even the people I’ve spoken to just since this trade has been made on Monday go to me, wait a minute, this is what they’re going back in the luxury tax for. This is what they’re going in the repeater tax for. They’re just getting in this cycle of competitiveness. But you know what? This is who these people are. It’s not because Pat Riley is 80. This is who Pat Riley was when he was 70. It’s not because Nick Harrison is moving into a more The rules were different then, buddy. The rules were different. And that’s a very good point. But the Heat will tell you, just like I tell you every week here that Eric Spolster will find a way. I do firmly believe that’s so unfair to him. I do believe unfair to him. I believe that Andy Ellisburg also will always find a way. I believe Andy Ellisberg’s genius with manipulation of money is similar to Eric Spolster’s genius with manipulation of coaching styles. I would I would put it this way, Big O. I feel more comfortable putting my faith in those two than a lot of other people in the sporting realm. I dude, I understand that. I love the team. I love the front office and the ownership group, but they’re they’re they’re in a rut right now because they’re not willing to do what it takes. And and like, okay, you saw that discussion with uh with um uh what’s it called? Um with Levitar that they were talking about how the arrisons are kind of telling Riley what to do. And this is I know. Okay. So, this is one of the things that I’ve brought up to you because if the arrisons aren’t willing to tear it all the way down, then they’re not willing to deal with what comes with that. That yeah, maybe less fans and less interest and less money is going to be coming in, but it is what you have to do in today’s NBA to try to turn the thing around. And I understand that the NBA 10, 15, 20 years ago and Nick Harrison for decad not wanting to do it for age or time or we have the Harrison’s not willing to do it because of frugaless or whatever you financials Nick Harrison has been the final sign off before his dad on the financials for almost two decades now. That’s what he does. But they also have worked with the basketball side for what the basketball side does because you don’t want to have a talent like Eric Spolster and give him absolute nothing to work with. He’s better than that. He deserves better than that. That’s what today’s move is Norma Powell does. That’s what the draft move did at number 20. So you have to find a medium there. They just are not. You and I could talk till you were blew in the face about the Heat having to tear it down and having to go to the lottery and having to have a 15- win season and big Oland Aligary. It’s just not happening. It’s like you saying it would be great in the summer if the if the sun would come out in the middle of the night. It’s just not happening. So, what I’m telling you, my job at the Fort Lauderdale Suns Sentinel, the South Florida Suns Sentinel, is to deal with the reality of the situation at hand. And the Heat’s reality is they will come hell or high water try to give you a competitive product every single season. Is it the right way? Is it the best way? Is it the most expedient way? No. But you deal with who they are. You and I have both been married a long time. We know who our wives are and what they like. We know there’s certain things we can change and there’s certain things we can change. For me, the heat is the same way. I just know who they are. So, I start from that baseline and understand going forward there. Nick Harrison and Mickey Harrison haven’t changed. Pat Riley hasn’t changed. Eric Puler hasn’t changed. Andy Ellisburg hasn’t changed. And the people in the organization haven’t changed. So, Bigo O, I’m going to work off that baseline. I know who they are. Yeah, that is very true. All right. Um, dude, the Yakuchon stuff. This is just stupid, ignorant, ridiculous. Thank you. Jesus Christ, dude. And again, and I get it in my ass mailbag games. It’s just absurd. Oh my god, bro. Give the kid a chance to grow. He’s 19. He doesn’t even know what this world is like. And he’s not playing with players. You know what, Big O? Some of the best players only look good around good players because that’s what they expect to be around. I think it’ll look completely different in training camp. I think it might look different in Vegas when there’s better opponents there. Also, I think it’ll look good. I think it’ll look different from now. Dude, please. Two months from now, two weeks from now. Give the kid a chance. It’s like, “Oh, this guy’s a bust.” I mean, when I got my mailbag yesterday and I did my ask at censville.com, it was like it was like my head exploded. People appreciate the moment of what this is. And here’s what’s changed. Big O, I have been covering summer league now for three decades. I used to go to Long Beach, talk to Stan Van Gundy there when it started before there was a Las Vegas summer league. But now we’re televising the games. We’re making them made for TV events. These are glorified practices. This is like Jim from Pimrook Pines emailing me and saying, “The Heat didn’t look good at practice today.” No, you’re seeing the kind of stuff that teams generally had done for years behind the scenes. So, you know what? Take it for what it’s worth. It’s a glorified practice session to cycle through players you like likely 85% of them will never see again. But you will see Kasparis in the right situation under the right coaching. God bless Eric Glass with the right system. God bless Eric Spolster and it’ll change. People take a chill pill, please. Well, but this is partially the Heat’s fault because of the position they’re in because they desperately need to turn things around and they look so middling and that’s what they’ve looked for for the last couple of years. Now all of a sudden the draft picks become even more of a focal point because you need saviors. And so all of a sudden, the 20th pick, this is not the second pick in the draft. This is not the first pick. This is not the fifth pick, which you could look at those kind of guys like, hey, they might be a savior for us. The 20th pick is never anyone’s savior in the NBA, especially a babyfaced 19year-old. Not right away. I mean, give me a break, dude. So, it it’s just it’s just ridiculous, bro. It’s just ridiculous. When we televise everything, that’s what you get. This is like televising the rehearsal for a Broadway play on the first read through. But that’s what we do because television sports is so desperate for product. They not only show the Las Vegas summer league, they show the warm-ups for the Las Vegas summer league. Big O, Big O, this is your exact perspective. If the Panthers workouts right now with their draft picks were being televised, people would go, “Oh, the Panthers look terrible. Look, they don’t have anything.” It’s all perspective. Appreciate what you are watching. Yeah. The only thing is that that when the Panthers are right now you’re watching, you’re like, “Oh, well, they’re young and we don’t need them right now anyway.” And and and that’s what you would be saying when you had the big three. Oh, okay. Yeah, we don’t need them right. But the problem is now you need them. But Monday’s trade and it just adds more. But Monday’s trade reduced that need. Until Monday, until they got Norman Powell, you would have seen Cas Kasparis in a much bigger role. Now all of a sudden, when I look at my depth chart, he’s eighth or ninth man behind DaVon Mitchell, behind Nicole Yovic. And honestly, if Haimey Hawkins Jr. or Haywood Heismith do anything, he might be ninth or tth man. And that’s fine. So folks, look at him more like a fourthline winger than expecting, oh, he’s going to be the guy. No, Cooper Flag is going to be the guy. Everyone else, we have to wait. Dylan Harper is going to be the guy. Number 20 might become the guy. That’s why you got to tune in every week for the Acura of Pimrook Pines report. By the way, did you see that 17 team trade coming? Holy dude. Well, that’s just everyone wants to avoid become hardcapped and it’s just all the manipulation. This is becoming a league of accountants. Yeah. Yeah. That’s Wow, dude. 17. That’s crazy. All right. What do you got going on this send? I got trade stories. I got Noran Powell. I’ll be updating. I I updated how with this deal, it looks like Bradley Beal is a lot less likely. I asked people to take a chill pill with even Kell’s play in summer league. Although, if there’s a concern, my concern is a playoff starting centers look so bad in the first two games. That does matter. He’s he’s supposed to be dominating summer league. This kid needs to have a game whether it’s Tuesday in San Francisco against the Warriors or in Vegas. I need to at least get one moment from Kel Wear where I say, “Yeah, that’s the next step.” That’s a That’s a legitimate grip. That’s a legitimate grip right there. That one Yakuchonis one. None of you have any right to do that. But you can you can pick on color. Although I I I noticed that um it it it’s kind of like it was um like like if it was a um a law firm, the law firm of Yakuchon, Warren, and Gardner all shared five turnovers each yesterday. So, and two or three you will never hear from again. So, welcome to Summerlink Half Perspective. And next week when I join you, Big O, it’ll be from Las Vegas. Little bit of a time difference. We should have a lot more read on this roster. All right. Follow him on Twitter at Ira heatbeat and subscribe to the South Florida sunset. Ira, thank you very much, sir. Pleasure. Thank you. 1. Big O gonna have another year that he is just gonna sit back. Eat all his words and hopefully make another finals year im happy with that😂😂😂. NO RESET. SHOW SOME GUTSSS

  2. Thanks for featuring Coach Mary Sarres Nelson in one of your videos! I followed your advice, invested with her, and the results have been amazing. Started with under $25K, paid off my $209K loan in just 8 months, and now I’m debt free with two fully paid rentals. Huge thanks to Coach Mary SarresNelson!

  3. That summer league coach doesn't let Kasparas play his position. Typical Spo nonsense towards the summer league coach.

  4. It’s says the Heat found 4 diamonds in a rough in a row. Which ones? Jaquez? Jovic? To early to call them diamonds in the rough.

  5. I was for tanking when we lost 10 straight not now you never go into a season with that mindset and this team isn't bad enough

  6. I really don’t understand how some Heat fans/media/front office members think.

“We’re gonna do this and that and then we’re gonna go all in for a star!!!”

Then what? You just went all in to get one guy. Now the build starts and takes years to refine to its championship form. When’s the last time a team won a championship thanks to trading for a star? The bones have to be there, and unless you have a hoard of picks, you have to trade the bones for the star.

You have to get a young star, either through the draft or by trading win now pieces to win now teams, like Indy did for Hali and OKC did for Shai.

  7. There is reason to be concerned with Jakucionis. He can’t beat bad defenders on the perimeter. That’s alarming for a high usage PG. Hope I’m wrong, but I’m worried.
