Could Josh Giddey Use The Utah Jazz As Leverage In Free Agency?

Could Josh Giddey Use The Utah Jazz As Leverage In Free Agency?

A new challenger has entered the ring. Could Josh Giddy use the Utah Jazz to get an offer sheet in this whole contract situation going with the Chicago Bulls? We talk a little bit about that. Plus, Bill Simmons got some stuff to say, but he’s not talking much about his Celtics. We want to talk about it all and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. You are Locked on Bulls, your daily Chicago Bulls podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. What’s going on, Bulls fans? Welcome to another episode of Wrong W wrong. I knew it was coming. Thank you for tuning in. Locked on Bulls, member of the Lockto Podcast Network, where it’s your team every single day. That’s Pat, the designer, host and creator of the Woody City Breeze and host of the Chicago Bears podcast over at ESPN 1000. I’m Hayes, also creator of Chicago Bull Central, Chicago Bear Central YouTube pages and podcast. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Pat, we got a lot to get into today. One of the things we’re going to start off with is the Jazz. The Jazz yesterday completed a trade which created them quite a bit of cap space. They can get up to $28 million in cap space. I think on on onset is 22 million. They can get up to 28 million. They also created a $25 million trade exception. So they got a couple of things that they can do. While you know we can get into the minutia if Josh Giddy even makes sense for the Jazz or not. All you need is one team to be able to sign an offer sheet. The Jazz could have absolutely no intentions on retaining Josh Giddy. But with their owner, one of their majority owners being Australian, you never know that they could call in, do a little help, get Josh Giddy a deal that that he likes to sign that offer sheet. No, with the full uh intent that the Bulls are going to match the offer sheet. What do you think about that, Pat? Listen, I think that if if you’re Utah, what do you have to lose? You don’t have a point guard. Yeah. Right. Like I I if if you’re talking about the future of the team, if you’re talking about adding talent to the team, that would be Josh Giddy making an offer does nothing to you, doesn’t hurt you, doesn’t put you into the luxury tax or anything like I I could see Utah doing that and I could see Josh Giddy using that as as almost a leverage move kind of like what Zack Lavine did with the Sacramento Kings. It’s more than a few years back now. Wow. Think about how time flies on that. But uh crazy, right? It it is crazy. I mean, what was that? Is that 2017, 2018? Jesus. Yeah, that’s it’s pre-COVID for sure. Yeah, it was Oh, it may have been even earlier than that. P I know that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, but uh Yeah, that’s crazy. I I I think to me, listen, I’m fine with that still. Let Josh Giddy go out there and set his market. I don’t think that the Jazz are going to be um looking to offer him. I think at at most if they if they, you know, buy out Kevin Love, however that ends up working out, and, you know, they try to make a move uh a couple of other moves, I think they can get up to $36 million in cap space that they could offer him, cool. Like, if that’s not the range that you want to bring Josh Giddy back at, don’t bring him back. I I think that’s the option that the Bulls have here, which is at this point I see people kind of like all in on the Giddy train almost just because the move hasn’t gotten done. And it’s some of the same people who are like, I don’t think Josh Giddy really affects the future. Make the right decision for the team. That’s what I want to see AK do. If you feel like Josh Giddy is somebody you can build around and build and not build around, but build with, go sign Josh Giddy. It’s not going to matter what the number. Yeah. I mean, I I I agree with every every every single thing you laid out there. I completely agree with. I think uh like I I get I get why this whole thing has been talked about in in the way that it has and you know, it’s gotten to such detail of, oh, do we want to do this? Do we want to do that? Like it sucks that it is if it does come to this point, but Josh Giddy got to think about himself. If a team’s willing to sign you to an offer, and keep in mind it could be more favorable. Who’s like one thing that the Bulls have to worry about this now that a team does have enough ca cap space uh to sign him is that while they can only offer $28 million or whatever, who’s to say that they can’t put in some easy to reach incentives in there that could push it up well over 30 million in in year two. That’s always the thing you got you got to you got to factor in with that. So, um you know, I I I had tweeted out that I I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bulls now with this if a deal gets done within 24 hours of this of this happening. We’ll see if it happens by this afternoon. But, you know, you it just takes one team. It just takes one team. And like I said, they don’t have to have any intention on actually retaining him. They just got to be willing to say, “Hey, yo, we got some uh we got some space. We can sign you to offer sheet to help you get your deal.” That’s it. Yeah. I mean, listen, the Kings knew the Bulls were going to match any offer for Zack Levitic. Yeah. You knew it. And this is kind of where the agents come in. This is where, you know, the conversations around uh um the the front offices matter and having good relationships and stuff like that. I think it’s very very uh um meaningful what you said about, you know, there being the Australian connection. Is is that something that they could leverage with the Utah Jazz? There being a front office that could be interested in Josh Giddy, but I think people have taken this kind of to like the empty degree where it’s like Giddy’s already had the conversation and the thing is done. Listen, you could they could make this same offer to Cam Thomas. They can make the same offer to any restricted free agent that is out there that they want to possibly have as a part of their team that they think that they could steal away. Are you gonna waste your time going out there and trying to sign a player who probably isn’t realistically going to go and and be a part of your team when there are some who I think the free agency market and some of the restricted free agency market may dictate you actually be able to go out there and get some of those pieces. If they want Giddy, it’s because they actually want Giddy. And we’ll see what ends up happening. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Giddy try and use that to leverage his his pay at a minimum to get a contract done, you know? Yeah. I mean, like I said, it doesn’t have to be intent with any drama or anything like that, but it’s like, hey, I got a whole off season I’m ready to just to deal with. Like, I want to focus in and lock in on preparing. I want to get this done. And him and his agent Cavar will look at that and say, “All right, we’re just going to go ahead and sign this off sheet. The Bulls are going to match and we just don’t have to worry about it anymore.” Yep. So, we’ll see what ends up happening. I I think what’s interesting about it, and me and you were talking about this the other day, I think the I don’t know what the Jazz’s future is. You drafted a dude that doesn’t want to be there. Almost like trying to like say, “Listen, we’re not going to let you dictate policy.” Like, you coming to Utah, deal with it. You’re going to be one of six black people in the whole state. And then all of them play for the team. And then you’re going to just like let him rot there like that. I I I mean I guess that’s an interesting game plan. Shout out to you Danny A. You know much more than me and maybe this ends up working out for you. But I mean clear Ace Bailey don’t want to be a part of this organization. Yeah. I mean but the thing is that it seem and but I will say this the one thing that is like we don’t know if that was Ace’s people or Ace. From something that we’ve heard, it’s like he he’s just getting bad advice from his a his bro. I don’t know if you’ve seen the videos from his agent, his agent looks like a janky promoter, bro. Like, bro, listen, bro. We We got to talk about this agent. I can’t believe we haven’t done this [ __ ] bro. That agent, bro. Like, there’s no way he trusts this dude, bro. How did If he does trust him, you I got questions. He’s like, “How many questions on Ace?” This man, Ace Bailey’s agent 110% bamboozles black men, bro. Look at this, bro. Look at this, bro. Look at this brother here. Bro, that that’s it’s like there’s no way like how where are Ace Bailey’s parents at? Like, I get it grown, but like you allowed your son to sign with this guy. Exactly how I’d be looking at it. You want to sign my son? You want to be my son’s agent? You out of your mind, my boy. Ace Bailey’s Ace Bailey uh agent is his agent during the day and he spel uh sells Reggie on weekends. Absolutely, bro. No way you can trust this squares. I don’t even know if it’s Reggie, bro. He’s still selling loose squares, bro. Bro, this man is selling oregano bagged up in bags to make it look like Reggie. That’s what he’s selling. He ain’t selling you no product. That’s crazy, bro. Like, yeah, man. Like, I can’t believe that that’s somebody’s agent in the NBA, bro. There’s no way. There’s no way. Now watch. 10 10 10 years from now, he’s going to be the next Rich Paul and we’re all going to be like, “How did we get here? How did we get here, bro? Bro, it’s it’s the it’s the clearly painted on hairline for me, bro. It’s it’s the Beijing. It’s the fake jewelry. It’s all of it, bro. It’s all of it. Like, I don’t know if you watch the video. Like, when you hear the jewelry, like he’s he’s moving it. It mug sounds like two aluminum cans touching each other. That’s not real.” Hey, he hate to see a diamond tester coming his way. Oh, bro. He’s out of there. He’s running, bro. He’s running. Um, bro, hold up. Hold up, bro. Hold up. I had to see if I can get this picture. Hold up, bro. His jewelry looks like somebody It’s something that somebody gave him when they were trying to get over the border, bro. They’re like, I got this for you. I got I got this piece for you, bro. You just got to get me over this piece for you. Just trust me. It’s going to clear. Trust me. Hold on. Hold on, bro. Hold on, bro. Ace never stood a chance, bro. Is this Suge Knight? Is it? What’s happening here, bro? What is happening, bro? What is happening here? He got a fur coat. That’s definitely Siberian mink yak ass, bro. That’s That’s definitely the the That’s That’s a leftover from American Gangster, bro. Like, that’s He got diamond studded shoes on, bro. That is That ain’t no way, bro. That ain’t no way. How How do we get here? Nonetheless, is this his uncle? Can’t be, bro. It looked like they got the last. Oh, no. No, they don’t. They don’t. They don’t. Never mind. Okay. All right. He gets uh free oil for uh for the wheels. WD40, my boy. Or not WD40. It just say oil on it like like the old oil cans they use in the original Wizard of Oz for the Tin Man. Is that what we’re doing with this shade? Oil on it like in a cartoon. Anyway, he also drinks liquor that says XXX with a crossbone on it. Oh, he definitely drinks corn liquor. like you like you like you can look at Shay and you can tell that that man that’s a man that drinks some corn liquor bro like you can’t you can’t tell me nothing in regards to that bro um anyway stop killing Shay uh so Shay going to kill us in the comments so um Bill Bill Simmons was on his on his on his show and he talked a little bit about well they were talking about teams that um have disappointing futures or which teams do they do they do they not want to bet on their futures and the Bulls of course came up in this as like every national media expert likes crapping on the Bulls and I do think the Bulls direction is a little bit questionable because we still have a lot of players that are still looking to prove what they can be at the NBA level. But what do you think about Bill Simmons saying that the Bulls have the worst future, the worst assets when it comes down to it? I I think because I had I went and listened to it and essentially how he was talking about it was like they have the most that’s been wasted. Mhm. I can’t disagree with him. Chicago is probably if if you’re talking about fan base, the second biggest market that you could win in. And you have wasted basically 20 years of people’s lives. Mhm. The Derrick Rose popup years were fun. Let’s be real. I I know we remember it so finely and so it was so Well, the leadup to the Derrick Rose era was fun, too. It was kind of three years. Yeah, the leadup. Sure. the the leadup. I mean, it was it was fun teams. You had competitive teams. Hey, we won four playoff series in 20 years. Oh, yeah. I mean, don’t get me wrong, in 20 eight years, we have won four playoff series. Like, at a certain point, it is I get what Bill Simmons is saying where he’s like, you’ve basically just told this fan base like, remember Jordan? That’s all you got? Remember him. Like, I get it. Like there are fun moments. I think there are fun moments of being Bulls fans. The Kirk Hinrich Bulls are some of my favorite Bulls, but it should be more competitive teams that we’ve seen in our history. And it’s just it it’s you haven’t even seen the Bulls go after trying to build some of these competitive teams, especially in the last 10 years. Like, it’s been 10 years. 2015 is 10 years ago. You haven’t tried that hard in 10 years. No, see the problem is is they did try hard at a period there and it’s just one that’s even worse, bro. That’s even worse. They were really trying hard there for a second. It’s just and and I get it and I even over on Central and I talked about it and I was fair. I’m like, listen, even if we’re talking about just the assets that we have here now, let’s be clear, we got a bunch of question marks. Now, there are question marks that I want to see what they can turn into, but we don’t we don’t have a single player on this team yet that we can adamantly say, “Oh, no. can build around this guy and you for sure are going to be a playoff team. We don’t have that yet. Josh Giddy, great finish to the season, tons of potential. I I think that he’s going to be really good Bulls plays player, but he hasn’t proven that yet. Kobe White, really solid player for what he does when he does it well and when he’s scoring and when he’s fluid with it, it’s fun to watch. But he’s definitely not proven you can build a team just around him and they’re going to be a playoff team. Modest, as we talked about, is too young. He’s one year in the league. It’s way too much to put around him for that. We just don’t we have we have a if we’re talking about a spades hands, we got three possibles and there and some of them are shaky possible. It just is what it is there. Like I I want to be real that now if one or two of those guys end up hitting on their development like we hope this season, we’re off to the races. But as it stands right now, it’s a lot of hope in the building. We’re hoping that Miles Bales can take the next step. We’re hoping that Noah Essen looks like something by the end of the season that we’re then like, “All right, let’s see what he does in year two.” And we’re hoping that Josh Giddy and Kobe or either or of them can continue what they did at the end of the season for a full season. You have one or two of those things hit, the whole outlook of the team changes. Until that happens, we’re just here. And and that’s and that’s the big thing, right? Like there’s there’s so much if on this team. Hey, I I’ll tell you this. You go to say, you know, if these guys hit and if this happens, I don’t think we have a player on our team that we can say every single night is going to give you 22 points. No, Kobe’s the closest thing to that. He did that pretty well last year. Like, he was pretty consistent last year. But even that, it’s like, okay, yeah, but you can score, but scoring 22 points still doesn’t mean you’re somebody you can build around. I mean, just being frank. I mean, like, honestly, Jordan Paul put up 24 a game last year. Is that somebody you feel like you can build around? No. Like I think that’s I think that’s the thing for me where it’s like you don’t even have somebody who you look at them night in and night out and you say, “Hey, that’s what they do.” Yeah. That’s their skill set. That’s what like the the closest thing you had last year was probably Josh Giddy facilitating. And I I when coming into the season, we probably would have said Patrick Williams defense, but by the time the season hit, it was like, “Wow, that’s horrible.” Like I think the two the only two consistent things that you could count on last season was Josh Giddy facilitating and Nikol Levous rebounding. Yeah, that’s not a way to build a team. And and that is how the Bulls have continued to build teams over years. So listen, I I get it. Like we can sit here and you know go at we and and I know Chicago will always try and defend their teams and and we love our teams. We love the Bulls. But that is Bill’s point. This place is sold out. People still have their season tickets from the Jordan years just waiting for something to come back. That is the point. Bill’s point is that you are wasting one of the best sports markets by being mediocre year after year after year after year and never trying to go out there and acquire a star. Never going out there and saying, “Hey, we got to build a team that’s actually going to go after it. Continuing to rely on hope.” Listen, hope goes a lot of way, but I’ve seen the Miami Heat go out there and build good teams where hope didn’t matter. That’s true. But they also have uh up until recently where Pat Riley literally just was like offseason what’s that? Um they had they had Riley, they had Sper. It was something that even if the roster was a little shaky and questionable, you trusted that those two were going to either Pat Riley was going to do something to improve the roster and Eric Sper was going to get every ounce of talent out of that roster. You still got Sper there, thank God. But um my boy uh Pat Riley was like, “Hey, listen. I’m about ready. I’m retired. Y’all just don’t know it yet.” I know it. Y’all don’t know it yet. I don’t think Pat Riley’s retired. Actually, it’s so funny cuz like nothing nothing solid move. Solid. Very solid move. I think I think that’s a team that you are kind of looking and saying, um, no matter what, Bam, you got to take the next step. Yeah, but they came into last season saying that and Bam looked at them and said, “What step? This was my step.” You also didn’t build a team. You You basically was just like, “Bam, you got this, right?” And then they were like, “Oh, we need more than just Bam.” was like, “Yeah, well then you and you still did have the in fairness, you still had the Jimmy Butler drama going on there, too.” So, yeah, you came into the season with the Jimmy Butler drama, so you probably didn’t think you were going after B. But like this season, I think coming into a with a different role. It It’s so funny cuz we we sit here, what is it, every two years we go, “H, Pat Riley’s just leaving the wheel. Oh god, somebody save him.” And then like Miami finds their way back in the finals with a team and we’re just like, “What the heck just happened?” Weren’t y’all a eighth seed? So, I don’t know, man. Listen, in in at at the end of the day, um it is sad what has happened here with the Bulls. It is sad what has happened here with Chicago. The the Ryan Dorfs, I mean, you could you could take every team into account on this. This is locked on Bulls, but I mean, welcome to Chicago where the Bears are one of the most underutilized teams in football and and a team that it took till 2025 to go. Hey, you know, the offensive line is pretty important. Welcome to Chicago. that also to say, hey, you know, um, you know, you can get creative with offense, right? You know, it still doesn’t it’s still not running the ball all the time with a little pass, right? You know, you can actually like build out a wide receiver core. You realize that that could happen, bro. Welcome to Chicago where I’m I’m going to be honest with you, we’re probably going to get to the end of this season and they may not resign Kyle Tucker because PCA is the answer. You can’t have $200 million players on your team. by the way, that’s probably three to 400 million, but still like like this is the city that has been the most wasted city in sports and Bill Simmons is 100% right. I can’t can’t even be mad at him. Yeah. Hey, but we’ll continue it, man. Um I’m not mad at Bill Simmons either. It’s just I’m just, you know, we got to prove it. And until we prove it, the doubt’s going to be there. You can’t blame the doubt. So, that just is what it is there. Yeah, man. We’ll see what ends up happening. We got summer league coming up this weekend. Before that though, here is Pat Riley asleep watching MASH. That is Did you just create that? Shout out to Chad GB, bro. That is crazy. That is That is excellent work there. Appreciate you. Uh but no uh we got summer league coming up this weekend. We will not be asleep. We will actually be completely locked in. Summer League has been kind of fun uh to this fun. It’s been there been some interesting games here. Ace Bailey got clapped, but uh hey man, we’ll talk about that coming up next. All right, Pat. So, summer league weekend is coming up. It’s been a while since we had Bulls basketball. The Bulls summer league team is what it’s something we didn’t really get to talk about. Like, there are there’s some some decent talent on this summer league roster this year that I’m excited to see. Modus is on the roster. He’s going through training camp with them, but they’ve kind of already said he may end up only playing one game, which perfectly fine there. I don’t think Modus has really anything he needs to pro prove with that level of competition. Of course, Noah Essen Gay is also going to be there. Uh but then you got guys like uh Wuggle Popppler who uh is I I went and looked at this guy’s tape. I look at everything. I don’t understand how he got went completely undrafted. So, we’ll see there. Javon Freeman Liberty is on on there again as well. Uh Jir Young is on there. Josh Primo is on is on that roster. Emanuel uh Miller Yuki. I’m not even going to try to mispron uh murder his last name, but it’s it’s a for a summer league roster, there’s some balance there, and it seems like it’s going to be some fun basketball. I’m I’m disappointed in you not being able to say Kawamara. Kawamara. Listen, I’m not even going to try it. Or Kawamura, I guess it is. Kawam. Yeah, Kamura. That’s not even That’s not even a difficult one for you. You were overseas. Not in that region, but still, I’m about to say just because I lived all overseas stuff. It’s anywhere not here. You should be able You want me to pronounce an Eastern European name? I got you. Part of the world. It It took you a minute to get Vagner down and and you speak German. I No. See, here’s the thing, right? Is that a switch in the brain, right? Cuz like when you know you’re speaking to people who speak German, you say the W as a V. When you speak to Americans, very few pronounce it correctly. That’s all it is. Well, listen, you better than to be because I just got it from uh Nightcrawler. But like I was like, “Ah, it’s Kurt Vagner.” Vakner. Uh, no, listen. I I actually I like the Bulls summer league team this year. Um, I I think you’ve got a lot of experience on this team. When you look at Wugga’s uh game, uh, first off, we got to do better. Uh, but, uh, when you look at Wuga’s game, um, I think the reason that he he went undrafted, lot lot older, a lot older, been in college a while. I I think he’s been in college. Did he Wait. Ain’t he one of the fiveyear guys? No. No. You’re No. You’re thinking the other guy. Uh the the other guy is the guy that that we that we did is the He was the five or six year senior. Who was our other two our other Caleb Grill? My bad. That’s Caleb Grill. Caleb. He’s the old guy. And he look Hey, listen. He also looks like a like a extra from Jag. Like he just looks like like he belongs in that. I I ain’t going to lie to you though. When I see Caleb Grill and that’s a guy I went and watched his game, I was like he’s just shoot. That’s his whole skill set. He don’t do nothing else. That boy just shoot. Uh you and I think what I do like to see is that um your summer league team, listen, most of these guys are going to be in the G- League. You’re not going to see a ton of these guys uh um at the NBA level, but there’s a priority on shooting that the Bulls are clearly going for here. There’s a lot of shooters on this team. Um bringing back Javon Freeman Liberty, I think, is pretty cool. And I’m I’mma be honest with you, I’m very intrigued to see what Josh Primo can do. Josh Primo was a really solid player who for some reason I we know the situation that happened down in San Antonio and then it kind of was just like yeah like but none of that actually happened and he just needed therapy and he got through it and actually he was a victim and now his NBA career is done. Like Josh Primo was a was he not a lottery pick? Yeah, he was a lottery I believe he was a lottery pick. One thing about Josh Primo, you said that uh you want one thing about you said you want to see it. He’s going to show you. That’s He’s definitely going to show you. So you got to worry about that. He going he going to show you. So you ain’t got nothing to worry about there, my boy. Oh, you want to see something? Oh, you want to see something? You want to see something? I can show you some things. Um but yeah, speaking of like you can’t tell me this doesn’t like if you needed a lawyer that can get you out of something that you know you did though, you know he got you. No, listen. Listen, let’s be real. He looks like he comes and he wakes up Pat Riley. He’s like, “Pat, you you got a boss. Hey, boss. Hey, boss. You You got a job to do.” But yeah, Josh Primo, former Give me Norman Pal. Give me Norman Pal. Norman Pal. What the hilarious? That’s crazy. But yeah, Josh uh Josh Primo, 12th overall pick, by the way. So, you called that one. Yeah. I mean like I I still think there’s a ton of untapped talent there’s words and uh I think that there is I mean like that’s a piece that you try to find and you get to utilize and develop and and take advantage of a poor situation that happened. I think Josh Primo has a ton of talent and I would actually be shocked if he’s not at least on the Windy City Bulls and maybe even being a piece on the Bulls moving forward. We shall see. You know, one thing about um about AK is he likes his former lottery talent. So, there you go on that one. He also likes controversial pieces a little bit. It was just kind of different for a Chicago team. Technically, he did not. It was like he signed Giddy and it was like at that point was like, you know what, the controversy wasn’t so bad. Primo, we got something for you. Now, if he if he also trades for Isaiah Stewart in that rumor, oh, we listen, bro. Listen, we can no longer say, “Hey, AK does is only going to take high character guys.” AK don’t care no more, bro. He’s like, “This trying to have all Diddy team, man.” Hey, man. 1. I’m with Bill simmons on this one I wish bigger tv/personalities would call out the bulls owners and organization much like how they did with the Knicks and LA on those down years, wish bulls were more on the mainstreams eyes. Clearly the fanbase will never stop going to the games. Maybe some good ol’ media bashing would create some sense of urgency on the Bulls organization. The bulls are the only big market team that can get away with mediocrity and not get bashed by big time media.

  2. I write and produce stage plays and good lord, I have met so many fake a** agents(I don't even have an agent) for so called performers, it's sickening. I really hope this kid doesn't get taken advantage of or guided down a unsuccessful path man, he's still so young.

  3. Does signing Giddey to an Offer sheet lock up the money for the Jazz until Bulls match? Feel like it could hurt the Jazz putting out sheets for Grimes or Thomas or signing anyone else in that limbo.

  4. IF AK thinks signing Giddey and sitting on his hands on everything else is taking us somewhere.. My question to myself is why am I such an idiot and watching this crap.
