The TRUTH Behind The Knicks Offseason Moves
The New York Knicks have hired a new coach. They’ve signed two players to come off the bench. And on today’s video, I’m going to give you the truth and the real reason why they made those moves. Before we do, I just want to open up the comments section and ask all of you to get out your red pens and grade the Knicks off season so far. A, B, C, D, or F. You’re watching Nicks now by Chat Sports. I am Marshall Green. Appreciate everybody for stopping by as we give you the truth, the real reason why the New York Knicks hired Mike Brown. They went out and they signed Jordan Clarkson as well as Gershon Yabellle. Let’s start with this. The New York Knicks bench, it was an absolute joke last season. We’ve got numbers to show you, data to prove to you, but it didn’t take many eyeball or it didn’t take many games for your eyeballs to be focused on to realize that the New York Knicks bench was the Achilles heel of this team. All respect in the world to campaign, Don Wright, and Landry Shamut. That’s not a championship winning bench. In fact, those players are all still free agents, as is Precious Aua. And as we’re a week plus into free agency, they are all still free agents. And you look at this, when it comes to bench scoring per game, how many points per game did the Knicks bench score last year? 21.7. The worst in the NBA and the playoffs, 15.8. That ranked 15th. Okay, that’s not that Oh, wait. Only 16 teams make the playoffs. So you had the worst bench scoring team in the NBA in the regular season and the second worst in the playoffs. Insert Jordan Clarkson, insert Gershon Yabaselli, and bam, prom fix. Jordan Clarkson averaged 16.2 points per game last year for the Utah Jazz. Gershon Yabacelli averaged 11 points per game off the bench for the Philadelphia 76ers. That’s 27 points per game last year. The Knicks averaged 21 as a bench unit in totality. These two guys are going to change life for the Knicks off the bench. They can generate offense for themselves. They can also do it for others. Jordan Clarkson has become an underrated playmate because it’s easy and it’s fun to just call him a shot chucker. Just call him someone that’s a microwave prototypical six-man of the year, but he averaged 3.7 assists per game and get to the paint. He can make every single pass and he’s a skilled passer as well. Yabiselli on the other hand, he is a play finisher. He has skill as well to where he could pop the ball around on the perimeter, but if you close out too hard at the top of the key, he’s going to drive right past it and throw it down. You don’t close out hard enough, he’s going to knock it down from three. Clarkson 36% from three last year. Yoscelli 38% from three last year, and you’re adding another 11 point uh three-pointers attempted per game. Legit firepower off the bench. And if the New York Knicks were going to do the whole we’re going to run it back thing with Brunson and the top seven that we’re all bringing back, you had to find a way to add legit scoring to this team, they do so off the bench. I expect the Knicks bench scoring to be much improved going into the season. Also, the above the break three-point shooting was an Achilles heel for this team. The numbers we’re going to show you don’t paint the picture as drastically as it did with the bench scoring being a joke, but I watched a lot of Knicks games last year. In fact, I watched every single one and they missed way too many above the breakthroughs last year. The numbers don’t really suggest it. Uh they just suggest that they weren’t getting a lot up during the regular season. They shot 26.4 on average threes per game above the ark. that would rank as the 25th most in the NBA. And they actually knocked down at a decent clip, 35.5%. That’s tied for the 10th best field goal percentage in the NBA playoffs. Didn’t really happen that way. They upped their three-pointers attempted from the top of the key. That’s what the above the break is. Any three that’s not a corner three. They shot the fifth most out of 16, but they only knocked it down at the 19th uh excuse me, the ninth best rate out of 16. So they can improve overall the amount of threes that they take above the three, but most importantly they got to knock down how many they make. And Gershon Yabiselli was one of the best big men in the NBA when it came to above the break three-pointers. He knocked them down at a 39 12% clip last year. League average is 35.3. He also has a strong shot diet of that particular shot, 200 such threes. So he gets him up and he knocks him down. And Jordan Clarkson as well. He gets him up and he knocks him down. Shooting better than league average from that spot. 35.5% from the top of the key compared to the league average being 35.3. So Yaveelli is a marksman and a specialist in that category. But you’re adding someone in Clarkson who is better than league average there. And that’s going to help you do that. The Knicks have to space the floor better, but they also have to be able to score from every single spot on the floor. We know Muel Bridges struggle from the top of the key, but now with Carl Anthony Towns and Yabaelli as two big men on your roster being elite above the break three-point shooters, that’s going to give you a consistent threat on offense from there. I’m expecting the pick and pop game as well as just Yabaselli and Towns moving off the ball better to get those looks to increase and the Knicks are going to be much better above the break from next year. Also actually use the bench like that’s why the Knicks went out and they hired Mike Brown and they doubled down by going out and getting one of the best six-man of all time and Jordan Clarkson and Yabaselli who is going to be an impact player right away. I wanted to read this from Tommy Beer. Shout out to him. One of the best follows on Nick’s Twitter. If you’re not following him, change it. He is elite when it comes to Nick’s content. He also has his own Substack account. Make sure you’re hooked up with that. A lot of stuff you can learn from him. So, I’m just going to read this saying, talking about minutes distribution, that won’t be the case under Mike Brown. During Brown’s first season in Sacramento, he employed a deep rotation. 11 different players averaged double-digit minutes with 15 players appearing in 25 or more games. Sabonis, who led the team in playing time, averaged fewer than 35 minutes a night. All five Nick starters last season season averaged at least 35 plus minutes per game. And the 2023 2024 season, Brown expanded his rotation even further. 13 different Kings appeared in more than 40 games with 11 of those players averaging more than 12 minutes per game. The reduced wear and tear on New York’s key contributors will hopefully yield dividends down the stretch. And that’s a big reason why they made those moves. Another tweet here from Tommy Beer. Mike Brown numbers. During his final full season in Sacramento, 2023 and 2024, the Kings finished in the top half of the NBA defensive rating. Brown had a deep rotation when doing that. 13 different Kings appeared in more than 40 games and 11 different Kings averaged more than 12 minutes per game. The next year or the year prior, the Kings finished with the eighth best net rating, but they use a deep rotation. 11 different players averaged double- digit minutes and 15 different players averaged or appeared in 25 plus games. The Knicks wanted to lengthen their rotation. They wanted a coach that believed in playing the bench but also developing said bench. And also they wanted to minimize the wear and tear on their starters. I know Jaylen Brunson wears an S on his chest and he is Superman, but he is human and he’s getting older every single day. And we’ve seen what Tom Tibido has done with players in the past. And I am not even a Tibido hater. At times I hate him. Times I really like him. But I don’t want him running Brunson into the ground. Also don’t want him running Anobi into the ground or Carl Anthony Towns and Male Bridges. So expect for the Knicks bench to be a much bigger factor into their team next year. And overall you’re going to see a lot of Miles McBride and Jordan Clarkson and Josh Hart and Yabiselli and Ukorty. And you might even see some Kolic and Dier and by at least I mean a lot more than he saw this past year with Thomas Tibido. If you want to see the Knicks win at all in year one of the Mike Brown experience, hit that thumbs up icon. We’re trying to speak it into existence. get the good vibes rolling. Hey Marshall, is it crazy to say if we don’t win the finals next year it’s a failure, I get it’s not fair on Mike Brown but with the talent that we have and ofc the wide open east, we should go all the way imp
A solid B or A-… because of the denials to interview contracted coaches made the organization look silly.
IMO sill need a backup PG that can defend.
Of course your bench sucks if you don't fucking play them
Hey Marshall, I give them a B+🫡
Leon said "singular focus", could that be Kat for LeBron in a weak East….NBA needs the Knicks…the ratings for the Knicks compared to the rest of the League is nuts
I don't want the refs to get us a chip through foul baiting LeBron…hope the rumors aren't tru
"I" incomplete… more to come . Two more sport to fill
What did the Knicks bench score per minute played? That’s a better barometer than total points. Thibs didn’t play them many minutes. That said, Cam Payne had to go.
How the fuc your going to score if the coach not playing you ??? 😂😂😂 smh
Bench is now much stronger – B+
Better Bench B
C until they address towns on defense
We need to see some of these picks from last year and this year to start producing. Leon has been phenomenal for this organization but since 2021 , the draft has been a bust or TBD players like Kolek or Dadiet.
2020 and 2021 were good drafts but we are 4 years from that and none of those players are here but deuce. We had an arsenal of picks, and between bad picks and trades, we really have NOTHING to show for it besides overpaid players (besides Brunson). This entire core are free agents or trades. We need picks to produce or we won’t win a championship
with everything that was done up till this point i give this off-season a b grade but time will tell if we made the right moves come end ofb 25 -26 season!!!!!
You have to keep in mind the knicks never played the bench..coach was the main issue
For me it is B+, the addition is legit contributor.
We didn't use the bench Marshall darling….😮😮😮❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
B
A
Here’s the thing…Yabaselle and JC put up those numbers on bad teams, and in the case of Yabaselle his team was depleted by injuries.
Not saying they aren’t excellent additions, but it’s kinda foolish to think what they did last season is that easily transferable to our roster.
I mean they both got 22+ minutes per game last year, I know we expect Brown to play the bench more, but there’s no way two guys get that many minutes off bench.
B
B+, still with a chance for an A.
