The Kyrie Irving Update That Is CONCERNING Mavericks Fans | Dallas Mavericks Rumors
An old clip from a Kyrie Irving liveream has Mavericks fans in a panic right now and I’m here to tell you there is absolutely no reason to panic. Welcome into Mavericks today by Chat Sports. Jeffrey Cooperstein here with you guys. Hope everyone’s enjoying the off seasonason right now and we’re in a bit of a lull here in the offseason. Not much going on. The Mavericks do play their first summer league game on Thursday though and we’ll be live for that as well. It’s Mavs vers Lakers. So join us for that. But to get started with today’s show, I want to ask you guys this question. Do you think Kyrie Irving is going to play in more or less than 25 games this season? If you think he’ll play more, type O for over. If you think it will be less, type you for under. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Kyrie slated to be back right around the Allstar break. So, that line is pretty good there. Let’s get into what Kyrie Irving said here and then we’ll react to it as this is from a live stream that was, believe it or not, was about a month ago when he said this. He said on returning before the playoffs from his injury, don’t hold your breath. You know what I’m saying? That doesn’t mean I won’t be back. It’s just I don’t want to make any predictions on when I’m going to be back. I just want to be back 150,000% better. And on the surface, this does look concerning because the original timeline reported by Sham Shirania was the Mavericks are targeting January, mid to late January as a potential return window for Kyrie. And yeah, when you hear Kyrie say something, he might not back he might not be back before playoffs, which is in April, you that does raise a little concern. But when when you dig a little deeper and you kind of get into the weeds and you know how Kyrie Irving operates, this doesn’t concern me whatsoever. This is a very Kyrie sentiment where he just doesn’t want to put expectations on anything. He doesn’t want to put pressure on himself. He doesn’t want to set expectations for the fans and for the team to be disappointed if he does not return by a targeted date that he says. I still have full confidence Kyrie’s going to play in the 2526 regular season at some point. It’s just a matter of when that happens. Now, like I said, Sham said that he thinks the Mavericks are targeting mid to late January as the return window. I think it’s going to be more closer to the All-Star break, especially if the Mavericks are doing well around that time and they’re in contention. There’s no read, no need to rush Kyrie back and risk anything. And he’s going to be on a minute restriction anyway when that happens. So, I just don’t think there’s any reason to panic whatsoever about Kyrie’s comments on this thing. I saw this surfacing on Twitter over the weekend and sending Mavs fans into a tail spin. And it’s just we we just got to calm down here a little bit. And this just realize that this is a typical Kyrie Irving sentiment that he holds here. And that’s not to say Kyrie isn’t super important to the Dallas Mavericks. In his two and a half years with the Mavs, his stats are off the charts. 25 1.5 points, five assists, and rebounds, shooting over 40% from three. He’s also the leader in the locker room, and he was the leader uh on the court as well. He is this the team, the face of the franchise, so to speak, at the moment. While Cooper Flag, yes, is the number one overall pick and the Mavericks fully expect him to be the face right now. Kyrie is the leader both on and off the court for this basketball team and they just need to tread water until he returns. We’ll talk about the Western Conference here later in the show, but this is a very difficult Western Conference as you guys know as it is every year here in the West. And if the Mavericks can just stay above water until Kyrie returns, they get him back and all of a sudden they become one of the deepest teams in the NBA. And I think that this point guard room will be able to at least hold serve with D’Angelo Russell going to be your opening night starting PG, followed by Brandon Williams and Dante Exom. The Mavericks obviously resigned Exom here in the offseason. Williams played fantastic in the second half of the year last year as well. So those are your three guys that will be handling the point guard duties while Kyrie is out. In case of absolute emergency, I think it’ll be Jaden Hardy. I still think there’s a decent chance Hardy ends up getting traded, but I I think you’re hoping that D’Angelo Russell can do the job at an adequate level. And the Mavericks think that Russell is hopefully going to have some sort of career resurgence because last season it just didn’t go well for him with either the Lakers or the Brooklyn Nets. Russell was just very inefficient, especially from three-point land where he shot just over 30%. Uh he wasn’t great from the field either. The passing numbers were okay. His scoring numbers were down as a whole. And he just was not the best version of D’Angelo Russell. The best version of D’Angelo Russell was after he was traded from Minnesota to the Lakers in February of 2023 where he averaged in 93 games, almost 18 points, over six assists, and over 40% from three. This is what you hope you’re getting if you’re the Dallas Mavericks from D’Angelo Russell. Like the borderline all-star D’Angelo Russell. And now obviously the Mavericks did sign Russell do that 2-year $13 million contract, but also there’s a player option on that second year. So if the Mavs get something similar to this out of DLO, DLO opts out and gets his money as a free agent, probably not from the Mavericks, but somewhere else. And also it means the Mavericks were one of the top six teams in the Western Conference, and they’re going to be able to represent the West in the playoffs because Russell had a good bounceback season with the Mavs. So, it could certainly be a mutually beneficial partnership between DLO and the Mavs. And you hope you’re getting the guy that the Lakers got there for over a season between February of 23 and April of 24. Speaking of the Lakers, we are in a sub battle with our friends over at the Lakers Report in the second week of July, which started today. The Lakers have currently taken the lead by four. We’ll talk about that here in just a moment, but before we do that, I need to shout out our sponsor of today’s show, which is Fanatics. And we still do have the Mavs draft hats available for you guys here. When you go to chatports.com/mavdraft, you can get that dope blue hat right there. Or you can get the white one with the blue brim. This is the one that Cooper Flag wore when he walked across the stage and was introduced to the world as the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. When you use that link, chatsports.com/mavdraft, fanatics will send us a part of the proceeds. So, you can get hooked up with Fanatics today, get your draft hat while supporting the channel. And the best part about these hats is it doesn’t have a draft emblem or logo anywhere. So, you can wear these year round. Love the cursive text there on the front as well. These are just some cool hats that you can get right there with our friends at Fanatics. Go to chatsports.com/mavsdraft. That link will be in the comments and description of today’s show. All right, let’s take a look at the tiers of the Western Conference here. And this is kind of how I have it set out before the 2526 NBA season begins. I think these are your true contenders to win the West this season. Oklahoma City, Denver, and Houston. I love what Denver did with the Cam Johnson trade and I love what Houston’s done this off seasonason getting Kevin Durant resigning Fred Van Fleet and also trading away Cam Whitmore. I think the moves that they have made truly do make them contenders there in the West. They also resigned Clint Capella. So now they’re going to have a huge big rotation with Shenun Capella and Steven Adams. These are the teams that I think will be competitive and will round out the playoffs and play in teams here in the West. You got Minnesota, who I know has made the Western Conference Finals two straight years, but I just think Houston is a step above them right now. Golden State will still be good. I think the Lakers obviously with Luca and LeBron will be good. The Clippers are a sneaky team if if Kawhi Leonard can stay healthy, although they did just trade away Norm Pal who’s a 20 point game scorer. So, we’ll see how they replace them. This is in no order, by the way. Memphis Grizzlies will always be competitive with Jaw and Jiren Jackson. I think the Mavs are in this tier as well. Uh, like I said, they need to tread water until Kyrie comes back. I think they could be in the upper echelon of this tier if they can stay over 500 until Kai returns. And then I think the Spurs are going to be in here as well with Webmanyama, with Devin Vel, with the addition of Dylan Harper. I think the Spurs are going to take another step and will be at least a competitive team this season. Now, the question is between these seven teams here, who finishes in the top six? Because obviously if you’re outside the top six, that means you’re in the playin and you have to win to get in to the NBA playoffs. I think these three teams are on the outside looking in here. The Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, and New Orleans Pelicans. I still think the Suns have some ability to stay somewhat competitive with Devin Booker, but the team’s an absolute show as they traded away KD. They’re about to, excuse me, they’re about to buy out Brad Beal, so they’ll be left with Booker and a bunch of other kind of toys that they have over there. Sacramento, I think, will be competitive as well with Damontis Sabonis and a couple of pieces they have over there. And then the Pelicans, I would put them on the lower end of this tier. Like, I don’t think they’re going to be very good. They’re going to play a lot of CTE ball with Jordan P out there. So, we’ll see what they be, what they’ll end up being this season. And then the final two teams who I think are going to be tanking for AJ Deansa or uh Darren Peterson will be the Portland Trailblazers and the Utah Jazz. The Jazz are probably in a class of their own. I don’t think the Jazz are any good whatsoever and the Trailblazers won’t be competitive this season either. But all of this to say the West is going to be an absolute gauntlet once again. And the Mavericks just can’t afford to come out of the gate slow like they are notorious notorious for doing. They’re gonna need D’Angelo Russell to hit the ground running. They’re gonna need Dante Exom to stay healthy. They’re gonna need Brandon Williams to continue what he did in the second half of last season into this year. Oh yeah. And they’re going to need Cooper Flag to play like the rookie of the year. Like the Mavericks are going to have going to need a lot of things to go right in order for them to make that top six and be in the postseason without having to play in the playin. It can they do it? Absolutely. Will it be an easy task? By no means. Like I don’t think anything is guaranteed for the Mavs this season. I do think they could be as high as the four seed in the West. I also think they could be as low as N or 10. It all depends on their health with Anthony Davis again with Kyrie Irving and with others. And it depends on how good Cooper Flag truly is as a Maverick in his first year. So hopefully Kyrie can come back and this team will be in a good position to where they’re able to really take another step right around the trade deadline when he returns. But it’s not going to be easy for Jason Kidd and this Mavericks team. I want to hear from you guys down in the comments section before we get on out of here. What seed will the Mavs finish with in the Western Conference? Do you think they will be a top four seed and have homecourt advantage in the first round? Or will they be somewhere in the middle, maybe even in the NBA play? Let me know what seed you think the Mavs will finish with in the West. That will do it for today’s show, guys. Appreciate you for tuning in to Mavericks Today by Chat Sports. If anything happens later in the week, we’ll be here with a further video. And of course, join us live here on Thursday for Cooper Flag summer league debut.
The Kyrie Irving injury that happened in Marsh of the 2024-25 NBA season was a devastating blow to the Mavs, which caused Mavs GM Nico Harrison to sign D’Angelo Russell within the first hour of 2025 NBA Free Agency. When will Kyrie return to the Mavs’ lineup alongside Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis? ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania reported that Mavs head coach Jason Kidd could expect Kyrie Irving back in January, but the 2026 NBA All-Star break could be a more realistic target for Kyrie Irving’s return.

It takes two years to get right with an ACL. I see him playing about 20 games. Dallas will be 6-7th. Win 42-46 games. People forget. A rookie Jordan who averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game won 38 games. Cooper is going into a better team though.
