What’s Going On With Quentin Grimes & The Sixers? Philadelphia 76ers News & Rumors

What is going on with Quinton Grimes? We are now just over a week removed from the start of NBA free agency and we still have no deal for the Sixers restricted free agent and not a whole lot of traction or a whole lot of talk on what is going on between Philadelphia and between Quinton Grimes. So, I’m going to give you all the latest, everything that we’ve been hearing over the past couple of days and a team that could sneakily try to steal Grimes away from Philadelphia. But before we get into all that, predict it for me down in the comments section. Will Quinton Grimes return to the Sixers? If you think he will, hit that thumbs up icon. Like the video. If you think he won’t, predict it for me in the comments what team he does end up playing for next year if it’s not Philadelphia. So, let’s take a look at this updated roster first because after the signing of Kyle Lowry on Monday, the Sixers only have one roster spot open on their squad. Of course, you got Maxi, Larry McCain, VJ Gordon at the guards, and you can see the rest of the roster. PG Edwards, Ricky Council, Kelly Ubé, Jai Broom, Tren Watford, Joel Embiid, Adam Bona, Andre Drummond. Would I like them to sign? Maybe another big instead of Kyle Lowry, but we’re here at this point. So, one roster spot open. You have to imagine that is going to be for Quinton Grimes. So, what options does he have at this point to return to Philadelphia? There are three avenues where Grimes can decide where he ends up playing next season. Number one, him and the Sixers can just come to an agreement, right? That’s probably what’s going to happen. That’s the easiest path moving forward for the two sides is they agree on a deal on a number that works for them. However, if the two sides can’t agree on a number, Grimes can either play on the qualifying offer, which is $8.7 million. That means he’ll play under that number for the season, and then he’ll be an unrestricted free agent next off seasonason. I don’t think him or the Sixers want that ideally, or the two sides could work on a sign-in trade. Uh, but the Sixers, I don’t think, are in a position where they need to do that if Grimes does want to leave. Um, they can can match any deal. But of course, it is a possibility they could work on a signing trade. Tony Jones of the Athletic, however, had a new report here on this Tuesday morning that the Sixers continue to feel pretty confident about resigning Grimes. Here’s what he had to say. To be clear, the Sixers as of Monday night are almost certain they are going to retain Grimes and splashed cold water on a potential signing trade scenarios. League sources told the Athletic, “The issue for Grimes is the restricted free agent market virtually non-existent right now. There’s almost no cap space in the market and that puts the Sixers in a position with where they are bidding against themselves. So, what this tells me right now, and we’ll get to a little bit more on Grimes’ position in a second here, right? Not a lot of teams have money. When you’re a restricted free agent, and there’s a few other restricted free agents we’ll get to that are in a similar position, you are relying on other teams that have money, that have open cap space or throw you a lot a lot of money, a big offer, and then your team has to match that offer. But no team is throwing Grimes an offer. So, if I’m the Sixers, I totally get it from their perspective. Why rush into a deal and give him all this money if there’s no one else out there looking to give him that contract? There’s no need to meet his demands. But at the moment doesn’t seem like Grimes is backing down on these demands. Tony Jones continued saying at this point, however, Grimes and his team are looking for a significant payout. And the Sixers are content to sit back and allow the market to play itself out. Not really sure what Grimes and his team are doing right now. I know they want to get paid as much as they can and take advantage of that stretch Grimes had for Philadelphia, but look, at some point you got to be realistic with your market and realize the leverage here. The Sixers are in no rush to pay Quinton Grimes when no team out there is able to give him up give him a big offer. But could that be changing? And could the leverage flip over into the hands of Quinton Grimes and his team? Because there’s a new team that could be emerging to potentially have the money to throw Grimes a big offer. And it comes off the back of this big blockbuster trade we saw happen on Monday. I believe this went down early Monday morning. Three-teamer between Miami, LA, and Utah with Miami landing Norman Powell. The Clippers landing John Collins. And the Jazz in this trade get off John Collins, get Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a second round pick. Not a great return, right? You think, what are the Utah Jazz doing? Well, what they did is open up some cab space. And so the Utah Jazz are a team that could try to poach Quinton Grimes or one of these other restricted free agents in the open market with the money they opened up and the money they could open up as well if they part ways with some players. Yasi Goslin, an NBA salary cap expert, explained this on X. It’s a great breakdown here of the Jazz’s situation. The Jazz decreased payroll enough where they could now pivot to becoming a cap space team. They can have $22 million in cap space if they wave former Sixers KJ Martin and Jaden Springer’s non-G guaranteed salaries. This would give them more spending as well as the $ 8.8 million room mid level. And then Phantom 9, Phantom 6 on Twitter with this breakdown of the Utah Jazz and their interest in Quinton Grimes. They have been interested in Grimes in the past. mentioned Utah would have to wave Springer and KJ Martin to create that cap space. Utah hosted Quinton Grimes on a pre-draft workout in 2021, which was Danny Ang’s first year as the Jazz executive. In 2022, A made it clear that he would not trade Donovan Mitchell to New York unless Quinton Grimes of course on the Knicks at the time was included in the returning package. The Knicks refused to put Grimes in their final offer. So, of course, the Jazz pivoted. That’s when they traded Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. So obviously here some things coming together, right? Utah can open enough money to make a big offer to a restricted free agent like Quinton Grimes. And Danny Age and Utah have had interest in the player in the past. So nothing confirmed that they’re going after him right now, but they certainly could. And Danny Age, this is a total Danny Age move right here. We know the way Danny A operates over there in Utah usually, you know, very stingy with his deals and with his moves. Always needs to be the guy winning every single deal. That’s a smart move, right? But Danny A has also burned the Sixers in the past. He was with the Boston Celtics when the Markeel Folks Jason Tatum trade happened. And then a couple of offseasons ago when he was with the Utah Jazz, he offered a big contract to Paul Reid. The Sixers were forced to match. So, it’s it’s totally a Danny H thing to go out and force the Sixers hands, even if they don’t want to pay Grimes all that money to at least make Philadelphia have to pay Quinton Grimes. So, if Utah does decide to throw Grimes a big offer of 20 plus million per season, I want to know, would you match it? If you were running the show in Philadelphia, if you got a $20 million deal, would you match it and bring Grimes back or would you let him walk? Give me a Y for yes if you’re matching it. Give me an N for no if you’re like, “Nah, man. Too much money. He can go over there to Utah.” Little more to get to here on today’s show, but first, massive, massive deal alert on these Tyrese Maxi city edition jerseys. One of my favorite city edition jerseys the Sixers have released really over the past few seasons. 50% off on all sizes for these Tyrese Maxi jerseys at chatsports.commaxi50. All sizes available right now, but I’ll tell you what, with a deal like this, they’re not going to last long. So, get your hands on the Tyrese Maxi City Edition jerseys. A great player, a great jersey, just the perfect combination. Plus, it’s 50% off. Does not get much better than that. chatports.com/maxi50. I’ll add that in the comments and description of today’s show. For me, when it comes to Quinton Grimes, I would match it. Even if you got $20 million a year, theoretically, I think if you’re Philadelphia, you have to match it, right? You cannot afford to lose Grimes at this point because with one open riser spot left, you don’t have money to throw at anybody else, right? So, you’d be losing Grimes for essentially nothing. You could bring in a player on the minimum or maybe the $5 million mid-level exception, but you’re not going to get somebody who can match the production that Quinton Grimes can, even if you don’t believe he’s worth all that money. And the Sixers let Gershan Yabellle walk because they needed the money to pay Grimes. So if you let Grimes go, all of a sudden you lost Gershan Yabisellle for essentially nothing because she couldn’t have brought him back and you lost Quinton Grimes and it’s just an absolute disaster. I know VJ come look goodness for a summer league game. That’s not enough for me to say that you don’t need Quinton Grimes back on this roster. He really needed a situation like this. Quinton Grimes and all these other restricted free agents depend on other teams having money in the open market. So, he needed someone like Utah to trade away players, open up cap space to potentially offer him that money. Now, he’s not the only restricted free agent on the market without a deal. Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets, Jonathan Kaminga of the Golden State Warriors, Josh Giddy of the Chicago Bulls are all also restricted free agents, and certainly Utah could decide to go after one of these guys as well. But, as we documented earlier, did have previous interest in Quinton Grimes. So maybe some bad news for the Sixers, maybe some good news for Quinton Grimes. Nothing official as of yet. The Jazz have not offered Grimes a deal, and they haven’t even cut KJ Martin or Jaden Springer yet to open up that money. But it’s an avenue, it’s a path, it’s a possibility that could change things for Philadelphia. And just getting more complicated here on the grime side of things. I hope they end up coming to a deal. And look, if I’m a city on predictor right now, I do think they will reach an agreement that is under the $20 million a year mark. I would guess Grimes ends up signing 17 and a half 18 million somewhere in that 1618 18 range for the next few seasons. I think he wants a cash in Y still can. And even if he wants 25 mil, I think he has to realize, look, this is my chance to get some long-term financial security. I was getting paid almost nothing compared to this before then. So, take the deal. It’s a good deal for both sides. I think we will see that happen soon. But anything that does end up happening with Quinton Grimes, you’ll be the first to know because you’ll be watching the show here at 76ers now. So, be sure to hit that sub button. Whenever anything happens with Grimes or any other free agent like Lowry did yesterday, we got a video for you guys. Sixers news and rumors during NBA free agency could take a turn for the worse as the Quentin Grimes free agency might become even more complicated. After a blockbuster NBA trade sending John Collins to the Los Angeles Clippers and Norman Powell to the Miami heat, the Utah Jazz opened up enough money to give Quentin Grimes the big contract offer he has been looking for. According to NBA sources, the Utah Jazz have previously had interest in Quentin Grimes and could force the Sixers to make a tough decision.
