What we learned about Cooper Flagg from Mavs Summer League Practice at the Dallas Mavericks Facility

Just got done talking with Cooper Flag after Mav summer league practice and we learned a couple things about Cooper Flag today. One of them is Jason Kidd in the introductory press conference talked about how they want to put the ball in Cooper Flag’s hands and how they want him to be a point guard of sorts and to work on his ball handling to work on his passing and to work on his offensive creation, which is something the Mavericks absolutely need. It’s something that makes a all-star level player into an all-NBA MVP player. You got to be able to do that, have the ball in your hands and do all that if you want to hit those levels, which is what Cooper Flag wants to do. And Cooper Flag himself said, you know, it’s it’s something that his coach at Duke, you know, coach Shy had trusted me a lot to do. I handled it a lot in the half court and set up a lot of different actions. So, I think it’s something I can do at a high level. So, I’m just excited to experiment and do some new things. Cooper flag saying, “I think it’s something I can do at a high level is like as close as you’re going to get to him bragging on himself or talking highly about his game or of himself uh in that way, at least from what I’ve seen so far.” And so, I thought that was interesting. And the other thing is what the Mavs summer league coach Josh Brohammer said about Cooper Flag is that on July 4th, the Mavs coaching staff had to send Cooper Flag home because he showed up at the gym on July 4th and they wouldn’t let him in. They wouldn’t let him in the building because they’re like, “Hey, you got to go home. This is a holiday. Go enjoy it. We know you want to work. You’re here every day. Go ahead and and take some time.” And he said, quote, he’s one of the first guys in the gym. you know, we had to make him sit down on July 4th just because he wanted to be in here working already. And they talk a lot about his work ethic and how Cooper Flag has just always wanted to get better and all that. He also specifically talked about his passing and how Cooper Flag threw a lob to Musais, one of the Mav Summer League players, and he he dunked it and Cooper Flag was like, “Oh man, like he threw that pass up real high and he was able to get it and bring it down and he’s Cooper was like, “Oh yeah, this is going to be fun.” And Cooper Flag said that one of his favorite passes is the lob pass that he needs to work on that a little bit more. And so it was cool to hear a little bit of insight about summer league. I’m excited to see Cooper flag play. They did not specify how many games he’s going to play at summer league. They said we’re going to take it day by day. We’ve heard from Mark Stein the rumor is that he’s going to play the first two games and then sit out the rest of them. But every team is guaranteed at least five games in summer league. I would be surprised if Cooper Flag played more than two, but Josh Pacific said today that they’re going to take it day by day. So, it’s the first game against Lakers and then we’ll see after

  1. Everyone is pumping up this lad too much too soon. Watch and see how fans will turn on him this season

  2. I get the feeling that Nico will want to start telling fans WE HAVE A LUKA AT HOME ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. 7 years, never had a problem having ballhandler on the roster. Alil crazy thing happens last year and Kai gets hurt. Now were the team DESPARATE for a primary. So Kidd is like, "fuck it", since they sold my last one for peanuts, I'll try to make a new one.

  3. Timpf said it best on his show: Cooper Flagg is an A to A- player in every category, but what separates him from other guys with similar skills like Tatum is that Flagg is a motherfucker who never quits

  4. I think fans are underestimating how good Cooper Flagg will be day 1. You are adding a Rookie who plays at an all-star level to a team with AD, Klay, PJ Washington & Deangelo Russell & eventually Kyrie.

  5. Damn they want a generational 6'7 plus player that handles the ball and passes, shoots, and rebounds at an elite level. Hmmm interesting they want to develop that almost like they had it

  6. Newport, ME local here. He grew up watching the post W press conferences with Tom Brady. Between that and how I'm sure his folks raised him, you couldn't ask for anything better. Lots of new Dallas fans in Maine lol
