The Miami Heat Offense Just Became LETHAL | Norman Powell Film Breakdown

Norman Powell is about to make the Miami Heat offense dangerous. I’m golden. Told you I’m shining. Had to break through. Perfect timing. [Music] So today we’re going to be doing another film analysis. This time of the Heat’s newest edition, Norman Powell. When’s the last time I’ve got to say the words Heat’s newest edition? We never get anybody except Simone Fonteio. and I don’t really feel like doing a breakdown about him, but anyways, Heat fans were very excited about Norman Powell yesterday and rightfully so because he’s a very dynamic offensive weapon who’s been super efficient his entire career and that’s something that the Heat desperately need. So, I wanted to do a film analysis of him. And in order to do that, we’re going to be looking at another Brady Hawk thread, who of course does a great job on Twitter, but I can provide some further analysis in these videos. Starting with these first set of clips here, Brady highlights Norman’s ability to shoot the three off the catch and shoot, which is really his bread and butter, although he can shoot from anywhere. Just last season, he was 42% from three on over seven attempts, which is just insane efficiency. something that he’s really been able to do his whole career. And the Heat need that now more than ever because we just traded Duncan Robinson, our greatest shooter in franchise history, is gone. He’s on the Pistons and our shooting was looking very lackluster without him. So Norman Powell definitely helps in that regard. There’s not a ton to break down in these clips. The one thing that I do want to note though is a lot of these passes came from James Harden getting doubled and then he just made the nice a nice read. You can see this next clip here. Two Jazz defenders are going to blitz him at the top of the key right up here. He’s going to make the nice read to bogey, cause the defense to shift, and then Powell is going to be wide open in the top left wing. The first plays very similar to it’s actually the Miami Heat. And for some reason, Terry and Haywood are doubling Harden at half court. He’s going to find Powell wide open in the top left wing. And then same thing in the next play, you’re going to see a couple of Kings defenders blitz Harden at the top of the key. And then once again, he’s gonna find Powell wide open on the left wing. The reason I wanted to note this is just because I don’t know if the Heat have a James Harden. I mean, in terms of someone who constantly chokes in the playoffs, they might, but no, listen. I now I know why people think I’m a Tyler Herro hater is because I throw these jabs. They’re not jabs, they’re jokes. I like Tyler Herro. I don’t like James Harden, though, because he’s a real habitual playoff choker. However, in the regular season, he is an elite scorer and facilitator. And that’s why a lot of times, like in these clips, you’re seeing him getting doubled and then he’s able to make the right read to find his open shooter. And the Heat just don’t have a facilitator to Harden’s level. Yes, Tyler Hiro initiated a lot of offense last year, but there’s a difference between someone who can initiate an offense and someone who is the full-time primary facilitator. The Heat don’t have one of those. We we were hoping that would be Casperis Yakonis, but we can see through two summer league games, he’s not quite ready yet to put it nicely, but he’s only 19, so it’s fine. Maybe he will grow into that. So, I still think the Heat’s offense offensive potential is capped without having a true facilitator, but Norman Powell and his scoring punch will still definitely help us out there. In these next set of clips, Brady talks about Norman’s ability to shoot the three in transition. He says that’s important because the Heat’s defense or the Heat’s halfcourt offense sucks and so does our transition offense that that sucks, too. He’s right about both of those things, but I don’t think the solution to that is a bunch of Norman Powell threes. It’s like just because your halfcourt offense isn’t good, that doesn’t mean take a bunch of bad shots early in the shot clock. I don’t agree with that. And then also, I’ve always been a guy who really doesn’t like the idea of taking threes in transition anyways. Like, it’s basic elementary school basketball coaching that try to get a layup, try to get to the rim when you’re on a fast break. And the Heat don’t do that. So, a lot of teams really don’t do that now. They settle for threes. Tyler Herro does that a lot. And it, you know, I’m cool with it in certain instances. Tyler is certainly a very good three-point shooter in transition. We’re seeing that with Norman Powell here, too. But I think there’s a time and a place for it. You know, if someone’s on a heat check, fine. If the if a if the Heat are on a nice momentum swing and a tough transition three will blow the roof off the place, cause the force the other team to to call a timeout, fine, take the transition three. I just don’t like when they always settle for it. So, Norman Powell won’t help our transition offense, but he can hit the three in those spots. I also want to note, too, how high he jumps when he shoots. I mean, you could see he gets like a foot or two, a couple feet off the ground here. I mean, look at that kind of vertical. It’s kind of hard to see, you know, with the the angle of these videos, but he gets really high off the ground. And as a guy who, yes, he’s only 6’3. He has a 611 wingspan. So, to have that kind of wingspan with this kind of vert on your shot, I mean, look at this. Look how high he gets up. No wonder why he takes all these threes is cuz he knows he’ll he’ll never get blocked. Now, let’s move on to the next set of clips here where Brady notes a new action that maybe the heat could run with him. Of course, we’ll have no more of our beloved Duncan Bam DHO’s. Those were such efficient plays for so many years. But right now, there’s another action that he could run, which is kind of Norman Powell coming off these curl screens. He’ll catch the ball sort of in the middle of the court there, and then he’s able to curl right to the rim. You’ll see right here, a screen will be set on Michael Porter Jr. Norm’s going to catch it at the middle of the court. do a nice fake and he’s able to finish with a floater inside. Sometimes he’ll finish with floaters like you’ll see on this play here right over Jame Hakez, but other times he can get right to the paint with layups. And the reason that this works, this is another time is getting screened, is because Norman Powell is such a great shooter that you can’t go under the screen. You have to fight over the screen like Jame Hawkins is doing here. And because of that, he’s in a bad position to recover cuz he’s already on Norman Powell’s hip. Norman’s able to keep him there and that’s going to allow him to get right into the paint. Same thing here. Michael Porter Jr. fights over the screen and because of that he’s already behind Norman Powell. Can’t guard a guy when you’re behind him and that’s why Powell is able to get right to the rim here. So, this is a nice action that I think the Heat could run. Brady also notes that another way Norman gets inside the paint is off of uh pretty decent drives after hard closeouts. That’s like the best secondary action that every shooter needs to have because if you can shoot the ball, there will be hard closeouts, meaning it should be easy for you to get to the rim like uh like Norman does here. That was a beautiful euro step. The one thing I want to note though is he doesn’t actually sell the shot fake that great. You can see right here, he never actually pump fakes it. Kind of sticks his leg out like no one’s ever going to fall for this. I actually think Tyler Herro does a nice job recovering with those short choppy steps. He’s in good defensive position here, but still his momentum’s going out. He’s already not super quick laterally. So, this is just going to be an easy blow by from Norman Powell. But on this next clip here, once again, you’ll see not a great pump fake. Doesn’t even really raise the ball. His base isn’t like how he normally shoots. I just think this is bad defense here. Aaron Gordon is 610. There’s no reason he had to jump so hard out at this, but because he did, Norman makes the nice read and has the wide open uh layup right at the rim. Same thing here after the hard closeout. Not a great pump fake. Really not much of one at all. But because Murray’s closing out Hardy, he gets to the rim. This is just a little bit of a different thing we saw from Duncan. I feel like Duncan’s pump fakes were elite. They always looked exactly like his jumper. And because of that, the defense would actually jump past him. And then a lot of times we saw Duncan actually sidestep and take another three instead of getting to the rim like Norman is here. So little bit of a different dynamic there. Not any better or worse, it’s just different. In these next set of clips, Brady shows some plays between Powell and Zubot that could maybe be uh similar to actions he runs with Bam at a bio cuz Bam also sets very great screens. And there’s a lot of different ways you can go about it when you have your big man set in the screen. You’ll see in this clip right here, Powell’s actually going to reject the screen. Dejonte Murray fell for it completely. You see Murray’s looking the completely wrong direction and that’s going to allow uh Norman just to do a strong drive. I mean, look where he picks up his dribble. He picks it up like a foot beyond the free throw line and he’s still able to get into the paint, finish with the left hand over the shot blocker and Eve Missy. That’s a very tough finish. This time you’re gonna see him actually use the Zubot screen up top and he puts his shoulder into the Pelicans big man right there. And that’s going to allow him to get uh just all the leverage he needs to get that layup up and up and over. This time we’re actually going to see a pick and roll which nobody on the Heat can run pick and roll. Hopefully Caspers can help with that one day. But Zuba sets the screen, rolls to the rim, and look at the angle that Norman Powell passes this from. Very, very high level of difficulty on this pass right to his big man. So hopefully Norman can bring some of that to the heat as well. And then this time he’s going to use the screen to get to the bucket. And I just love how as soon as he gets uh past the screen, he sees the slowfooted Eve Mi right in front of him. He’s just going to attack with just relentless abandon and get right to the rim there. I think these are very difficult finishes at the rim. Uh and it’s just nice to see that Norm Pow has another dynamic outside of just shooting. I suppose uh the last thing he notes here is that uh Norman is also able to do a little bit of isolation scoring which is important because if Tyler’s cooking, defenses are keying in on him. He’s able to kind of take the ball in his hands and make a play. Maybe he’s late in the shot clock. Maybe it’s just uh if he finds a mismatch, he’s able to sort of abuse that. Like right here, he’s on Jame Hakez. I hate to say it. Jame is not the best defender. A little bit slowooted. So Norman sees that, does a beautiful cross to get right to the rim. is going to body him and then finish with the right-handed layup on the left side of the hoop. Not something you’re really supposed to do. You would hope Jame Hakez could have blocked this, but because Norman does a great job getting his body into him right here. That’s going to throw Jame off balance. Norman goes up quick, and that’s a very strong layup for him. In this first play here, he sees the slow foot of Yokic on him. Nasty step back and knock it down. Excellent footwork over there. And then on this one, Tyler Herro is going to get screened out and instead of trying to fight over it, which is difficult. Zubox’s a big guy, so I get it. But he’s he’s going to go under the screen and you can’t go under the screen on Norman Powell because by the time Tyler Herro has any chance to recover, Norman Pow’s already raising up and that’s as good as gold right there. So definitely a lot of uh dynamic, you know, a lot of versatility to Norman Powell’s offense and that’s something that the Heat need. So, I’m a fan of the trade, especially when you consider what you gave up. And at the very least, it makes things exciting for us Heat fans again. It makes it interesting, have something different to look forward to. But let me know what y’all think down in the comments below. I’m very curious to hear what y’all think. Like the video and subscribe cuz all that stuff is good for the algorithm and greatly appreciated. I’ll see y’all in the next video. Peace out. Pull up in your city. [Music] Yeah, I need a head space. You know this homegrown [ __ ] don’t offend me. Hm.

  1. Trade is great, impossible value to pass up, but I just don't see what the vision is, this team isn't good enough to compete for the east, but they also don't want to tank. Having Wiggins and Powell, also doesn't fit the youth movement we seem to be going in. If I was Pat I would flip both Powell and Wiggins for draft capital.

  2. I won't stand for Fontecchio slander! 😀 As a European, I can tell you that he is currently better then Jovic, JJJ or Larsson, as he is older and already an established player. In case of Heat bad 3pt shooting at the beginning of the season expect him to be the first SF of the bench soon. After saying all that, he is probably outside rotation at the moment because of the Spo's insistence on defence. If he is still on the roster when the season start, you should do a breakdown for sure!

  3. Who the hell is our Leonard and harden for him to play off.
Temper this excitement, remember he got shopped for nothing.
    Retire Pat.
    Let's go Heat.

  4. idk about yall but if you asked me a month ago if i’d rather trade Ware, Jaime, Wiggins, and our first round pick for KD or K Love and Kyle Anderson for Norman Powell i would have said give us Norman Powell 100%
This trade makes me happy that we didn’t give all that up for KD

  5. Powell, Herro, Wiggins, Bam and Ware is a very good starting lineup. Coach Spo will have to get creative since we have no true point guard that can create for himself and teammates off the dribble drive penetration. I think that has really held back our offense.

  6. Don’t forget, this is a 1 year rental looking for 4 years $128 million before you get your hopes up on what he does for our team.

I would have rather traded 1 of our own 2nd round picks for John Collins.

    I just don’t understand what we’re doing.

  7. POINT ? RIGHT now Powell is better than Lillard post injury z….

He is alpha ….. carefully watch how he played vs us last season … Not just the points but rather Manhandling out guys when he wanted to .

Would not be surprised if we get Lillard next year before they are boys …

  8. Biggest POINT ? game 7 series on the line ??? He can score at will …. Hero can’t score at will not impose his will …

    Bam is. Streaky …

  9. Norman Powell plays a lot like D – Wade Powell can shoot the 3 unlike Wade

Hr is NOT OLD compared to
    BUTLERc/ KD/ Dane

    Extremely athletic

We HIT GOLD / TRAM CHANGING move

Don’t want to trade Hero but now we can . If we go for a HUGE arm like ZION

  10. GS needs a rebounder … GREEN. Is ass

    3 way

    We get Kunknga
    GS gets Kinect /Houchimora
    Lakers get Wiggens Imagine our..

  11. Whoa Anthony! I love and support your work even if I didn't think I would at first. But please don't disrespect our new boys believe you've even seen them play ffs. Just watched his interview, I like the dude immediately and even if he's not a superstar, Heat fans have known and loved many players over the years this at offer more than you think at first glance.
