So, we got a lot to cover in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. And of course, thank you for making Locked On Pelicans your first listen today and every day. So, let’s get into it. The Pelicans still have at least another move, if not more, to make. And one of the things that’s kind of been out there that looks pretty obvious is they want to sign another veteran guard in some capacity. And I think that’s a smart move on their part that you could just use a little bit more depth at that position, someone who could be a net positive for you. But the question is, which direction do the Pelicans go and who is the right fit potentially for this team? And one of the more recent names you’ve heard them be linked to is Malcolm Brogden, formerly of the Washington Wizards this past season where Troy Weaver was, you know, a consultant for them. But Brogden as an unrestricted free agent, you know, he’s he’s older here. He’s been in the league for a while now, nine years, former rookie of the year. He’s going to be 33 next season. Does make some sense for the Pelicans. one if they’re just looking to get another veteran presence in the locker room. And we’ll talk more about this in the next segment. He’s a good locker room kind of guy. This is someone that has a lot of respect around the league that has kind of done it for multiple different teams. Milwaukee, Indiana, Boston, Portland, Washington now kind of rave reviews about him as a person wherever he has gone. And when you look at the production, right, just four, three years ago, he won six man of the year with Boston. you know, with Washington last season, limited games. He’s been hampered by injuries the past couple of years. You know, 24 games, 13 starts for the Wizards last season. 13 points per game, 4.1 assists. You know, he’s still sound enough on the defensive side of the ball, too, that I think he could fit what New Orleans needs. And that’s maybe another defensive minded guard of the names we’re going to talk about that he kind of checks that box. Still good size at 6’4. You know what I find most questionable about him right now? One is the three-point shooting. That was not there last year, but the prior two seasons he was shooting above 40%. So, can he shoot the three regularly is going to be a bit of a question for him here, too. But the thing is, you know, do the Pelicans want what are they looking for in the guard position that they’re going to try and sign somebody to. Is it a defensive guy? Might be Brogden then. Is it a point guard that might be a Chris Paul or a Russell Westbrook? Do you want more of a combo guard? That’s Brogden. Brogden kind of splits his time between playing point guard and shooting guard, you know, the past couple of years in the league, filling whatever, you know, gap is needed there. Do the Pelicans have a clear vision for how they would use him in mind? Is he a point guard? Is he an offball guard? Is it a combo guard where you only need him for part of the time? You know, and if you go and sign, say someone like Russell Westbrook, who I think make a makes a ton of sense for the New Orleans Pelicans. I mean, you’re you’re playing him as your point guard, right? So that means you’re not going to run him out there with Jeremiah fears. Whereas with Brogden, you could play him with Jeremiah Fears, right? If you put Russell Westbrook out there, is he going to be your your lead guard while Jordan P is your two guard? Does Pool’s role kind of switch back and forth depending on who he’s on the court with? Those are things that I think they need to keep in mind here. So, if you’re looking to kind of fill a combo guard role in more defensive minded, look, Brockton’s not a good elite defender or anything like that, but he can hold his own enough for the limited minutes per game that he would be playing. Uh, you know, when it comes to that. So, I think that is fine for the most part. Fine for the most part. You know, again, not an elite choice, but the team doesn’t have a ton of money to spend right now. After you factor in the Micah Peeb contract, you’re looking at about 4.2 2 million to the luxury tax line for New Orleans. They have one open roster spot. That’ll come into play in the third segment here. Brogden on a vet minimum. Sure, why not, right? Russell Westbrook, if you look at him and what he’s been capable of doing, you know, even with the Denver Nuggets last season, the Clippers before that, I like the addition of him a little bit more, too. You know, you need that downhill attacking threat. Russell Westbrook is very much still that. And if maybe Jeremiah Fierce takes a little bit longer to kind of acclimate to the NBA, is Westbrook kind of your cheap stop gap solution, you know, until you feel comfortable playing Fierce more, whether that’s at any point this year or in the future? I think the answer to that could be yes. I do also think Russell Westbrook is a good locker room type of guy. He has been very unfairly scapegoed in my opinion over the past couple of years at various stops whether it was the Lakers or wherever. When teams kind of move on from him, he gets thrown under the bus. But if you talk to his teammates, if you actually talk to people with the team, they love Russell Westbrook. They rave about Russell Westbrook. And look, if you’re just trying to add some excitement to this Pelicans team, which wouldn’t be the worst thing, you could do worse than Russell Westbrook. He’s a fun player. He’s still a fun player. He’s a bigname player. that would just get people excited about the Pelicans just a little bit more. And I think there could be use with that. Westbrook last year, you know, started about half his games for the Denver Nuggets, 75 games, 36 starts, 13.3 points per game, 6.1 assists. He can still do it. He gets downhill. He still rebounds pretty well um at five rebounds per game. It’s wild that he’s been in the league for 17 years already. That’s just nuts to think about, by the way, that he’s been here that long. But, you know, couple years ago, he was in the running for sixman of the year with the Clippers. You know, is willing to do whatever it takes. He’s played 75 games last year, 68 the year before that. Look, the fact that he plays is an important thing when it comes to this Pelicans team. So, I could see him being an option. Sounds like the Sacramento Kings are really interested in him. You know, Brogden’s going to have a couple of suitors around the league, too. Once some of the dust starts to settle in free agency, the Pelicans might need to overpay slightly for these guys as long as it’s on a one-year deal. I am really not worried about it whatsoever. So, I think those are the two that make the most sense. Chris Paul, of course, makes a ton of sense, too. Would be a happy story. He’s kind of said it’s his final year in the league for the most part. I’d love to see a reunion year. It just doesn’t seem like that’s what he wants. I think he would be the perfect addition just, you know, kind of bookend for his career, can still help and contribute to this team, but it sounds like he wants a starting role. I don’t think he’s going to get that here in New Orleans. So, when you you factor all that in, the fact that he wants to maybe be closer to his family, which is based, I believe, in Los Angeles at this point. You know, he kind of wants to be out closer to the West Coast. You’re looking at one of the LA teams, maybe the Phoenix Suns. That’s likely what it would be. I just don’t see a Chris Paul reunion happening. As much as it would make me very very happy. I think you you can argue it might just be set that he’s the greatest player in franchise history would just be a cool thing I think. Um and so that’s who I would try and go. If I’m ordering these guys it’s Chris Paul Westbrook Brogden but I don’t think Chris Paul unfortunately is a realistic thing. You know all the guys we mentioned here are good locker room guys. I would say Chris Paul definitely is, Russell Westbrook is, Brogden is. Is that what the Pelgans are also looking for? What about like just the concept of leadership here? We’re going to be answering a couple of your questions here in today’s episode of Longtime Pelicans. So, actually, this one, by the way, I should just throw this out there. This one came from Terrell to Ryme. What point guard uh should the Pelicans be looking to bring in as a free agent? We’re doing a mailbag episode. I should probably have led with that. So, coming up next, two more questions from you, the listeners, including a surprise name in here, too, which is kind of fun. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Lockdown Pelicans. Is there enough leadership on the team? Is that overrated? I’m going to answer that question coming up here next. Today’s episode of Lockdown Pelicans is brought to you by Monarch Money. Go make Locked on Saints your second listen today. Part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. So, I want to get into a question that comes from friend of the show, friend of mine, probably someone you have heard about too, and that is Theo Mitchell. Is there enough leadership on the New Orleans Pelicans? We’re doing a mailbag episode and yes, Theo, as a friend of the show, has chimed in here. So, here’s my take on this. I think there’s enough leadership on the team, and frankly, when it comes to adding vets and ages and all of that stuff, I think leadership’s a little bit overrated in my opinion. I’d rather you just get talent because that’s going to win you games. Culture, leadership doesn’t win you games by themselves, right? Otherwise, the Miami Heat would win a title every year, but they don’t. It needs to be the players that get you there. So, when I look at the roster, I I Are you good humans? Do Do you do all that? I don’t care. Do you mentor other guys? I don’t care. Are you a good basketball player that’s going to help the team win? You know, look, there’s places for guys like Garrett Temple and others in the league where, yeah, you’re not going to contribute to winning, but you need a presence. One or two of those guys is fine, but more than that, I I’m not stressed about it because you need players that are going to help you win games. You need about 10 positive players in terms of net rating that’s going to help you win games. And I’d rather get those guys even if they don’t bring the leadership qualities that people feel this team particularly needs. And look, maybe vits don’t matter as much as you think, right? The team has attempted this with a number of different people during the Zion Williamson era. Remember JJ Reic, right? He was brought in to kind of be the leader, the mentor to Zion Williamson. Did Did it work? Does Zion still have issues that we constantly talk about despite all of his talent? Yes. Right. The Pelicans tried in a variety of different ways. Derek Favorvers too, right? Stephen Adams is a good leader locker room presence, you know, to do various different ways to add more leadership to a very young team at the time, very young team with Zion Williamson, Jackson Hayes, Nquille Alexander Walker, etc. here and it didn’t work, right? Look, last year 21 wins, you had veteran presences on the team. What good did it do you, right? Where was the veteran presence, the leadership helping the team get through tough periods? they it was non-existent, right? You just need guys that are going to help you win games more so than anything else. So, I do tend to think like the idea of vet leaders in the locker room, all that is a little bit overrated a little bit. Look, Cavon Looney is going to help. Whatever veteran guard they bring in is going to help too. That you need that kind of thing, but you need guys that are going to help you win. Kavon Looney is going to be a good player that, you know, in theory helps them win. That’s more important than just signing someone to be a leader on the team, right? You know, I saw this quote on Twitter. It’s from Chase Hug’s uh Chase DC Sports. Bub Carrington on Jordan Pool’s impact as a mentor last season. Quote, “It’s crazy not seeing him in our locker room every day. JP, that was one hell of a guy, not just a player. That was just a really good dude like off the court. I was just at his house right before he got traded. We were watching the finals together. He just invited rookies over, invited my family over. It would be me, JP, like my cousins at his house. He’s a really good guy, a really good vent, always very vocal. He taught me the vocal piece of being a leader. Look, that’s great. But if Jordan Pool was on the team making the kind of money that he makes and had that kind of presence, it wouldn’t matter, right? It wouldn’t matter. You got to have guys that play and are leaders. So, I think they have enough of that, you know? I think Looney adds to that. Jordan Pool adds to that. whatever else they kind whoever else they kind of sign adance that you know we’ve even heard of De Jonte Murray already reaching out to the rookies trying to kind of help them along too they have enough leadership in my opinion even if the team’s young you can have been in this league for a while and have the kind of growth and leadership qualities there and so I think the Pelicans have enough you know more so than anything else the leadership on this team doesn’t need to come from Jordan Pool it doesn’t need to come from Cavon Looney look having those guys is fine but that’s not where it needs to come from. It needs to come from Zion Williamson. And this is Zion’s, you know, first real test of it’s your team now. You know, you it’s been his team, but with the injuries, okay, whatever. There’s also been kind of veterans and stuff like that around him. This is on Zion now, and it’s on him to step up and be the leader this team needs. And he needs to start with that by doing it by example, doing the correct things off court. He’s struggled with that. He has struggled with that the past couple of off seasonasons, the off-c court stuff. He’s gotten better about it, don’t get me wrong, but is it where it needs to be? No. Not if he wants to stay healthy. Not if he wants to have the kind of career that he wants to have that we know he wants to have. It’s coming in in shape. He’s not done that yet. This is the year you’ve got to do that, right? You know, this is the year where you need to lead by example every single day. And then when you get here and you’re around the team, you’ve got to be that vocal leader. It’s time. So they can add all these other people you want, pieces, you want leadership, you want, but if it doesn’t come from Zion Williamson, look, that’s who’s still going to make or break the team. We talked a little bit about yesterday where you can start to see maybe they can be okay enough without him, but if you want to truly succeed, it’s going to be behind Zion Williamson and he’s going to need to be the leader for this team. That’s the most important thing. All the other stuff is ancillary. It’s all lyap, right? It’s on Zion Williamson to be the guy to do all of that. So, I do think some of the leadership questions and concerns about, wow, they’re young all of a sudden. Yeah, they’re young, but people have been around the block for a minute. They all know what they need to do. Zion knows what he needs to do. Now, it’s just about going and doing it. I also think this is an opportunity for someone like Trey Murphy, Herb Jones to really step up and be that leader on the team. Now, they’re some of the more established people on this roster. They’re both going to be, you know, we’re assuming they’re going to be starters for this team. Be that vocal leader. You know, Herb, it’s less so in terms of vocalenness, but he leads by example. But I think this is an opportunity for Trey Murphy to really kind of take that step forward. We’re expecting a big jump in play for him. We think the superstar breakout year is possible for him this coming year. Do that with leadership, too. And that’s how you really establish yourself as a special special player in this league in the NBA. That’s where I want to see the leadership come from, not someone that they could sign. I want to see it come internally from the team, whether it’s Zion, Leso, Trey, or others on the team. That’s what I’m looking for. But I do think there’s enough leadership here, even if you know they’re they’re a young team. That’s fine. That I’m not worried about. And I’d rather you just get good players that help you win more so than leadership or anything else. And some of this, and we’ll talk about it more tomorrow. I want to look at Dejonte Murray and the coaching staff in tomorrow’s show. And we’ll talk about it when it comes to the coaching staff in terms of leadership and things like that. That’s coming up in tomorrow’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. But coming up next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans, let’s touch on Summerly a little bit here. Is there going to be a surprise a surprise player? Something like that. What should we be watching for? That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. By the way, if you’re an everyday dare, let me know in the comments down below. If you’ve got questions you want answered, put them in the comments down below as well and maybe they’ll get answered on the show just like the past two have. And let’s go with a third one. Now, this one comes from Logan um Graphia at Soulman57. Shout out Logan here. He says, “Who are some of the players on the summer league team that aren’t our draft picks or big names that you think we should look out for in these games?” So, I picked this question for a reason, and it’s not to actually answer the question, but use it as a jumping off point, and I’m I don’t want to sound mean or anything like that here, right? You know, when you look at summer league, couple of things to note. One, a lot of these guys are barely in the league as is. Not just the NBA, but the G- League, you know, or or Europe or wherever. So, don’t read too much into summer league performances because like the the general talent pool is so bad in my opinion. It’s worse than college in my opinion. A lot of the time some guys are good. They’re going to be there’s some higher level players in college too, don’t get me wrong, but in general, h it’s not the best. This is just a fun annual league showcase, more of a networking event for the league than anything else. And so, I don’t read too much into summer league performance anymore. We still I still might do it. might do this thing where I’m like look at this performance and we freak out that it’s can be fun don’t get me wrong but for the most part I don’t read too much into summer league and when you look at like could a guy jump out and make it right what about Will Baker from LSU you know those type of players the problem is not if they have a breakout summer league you know could they make the roster things like that where you’re going to make the roster from is training camp or preeason not based off summer league summer league will get you invited to those two things. That’s worth keeping in mind. But for the most part, when you look at the Pelicans 15-man roster, 14 of those spots are filled. And we just spent the first part of today’s show talking about how they would fill the 15th spot. There’s no room for a surprise on summer league to make the team. Even the the three two-way spots they have are filled right now. And so, if that’s going to be the case, you know, a lot of these guys are just kind of bodies in summer league, right? you know, Lester Kenyonz, we’ll see what ends up happening with him. You know, he’d be the one that I could see maybe not being safe on the two-way, but they just signed Trey Alexander. They just signed Hunter Dickinson. Those are kind of two picks by the front office where Kenyonz is a holdover from the previous regime. So, because of that, you know, maybe he’s not safe. So, could someone else take that spot? Maybe. But I don’t know. And is that guy ultimately going to impact this team at all? even if they’re a surprise or something like that. Probably not, right? You know, you could look at this roster and we’ll do a depth chart and all of that and kind of figure out the rotation and everything and wonder where Derek Queen and Jeremiah Fears are going to get minutes from, right? Who are they taking minutes from? And if they’re maybe struggling to get minutes, look, anyone else on the summer league roster, and no offense to these guys, but probably going to be a long shot at best for them to try and get meaningful minutes in the NBA. Maybe you sign him to an exhibit 10 to go play in Birmingham for the year, keep them kind of in your system because you like them for, you know, a variety of reasons. Yeah, absolutely. You want Birmingham to have a good season and have good players and just kind of keep some talent near you that you can pluck should you need to and is an injury reserve. But for the most part, the Pelicans roster, you know, as of today, you know, barring one more signing is kind of set or any sort of big trade coming through, but I don’t know if we’re going to see anything massive just yet. We’re starting to hit the dead period when it comes to, you know, the big transactions and things like that. So, I’m not really anticipating anyone on summer league, you know, standing out. And even if they do, their path to meaningful minutes on the Pelicans is going to be really, really tough to the point where it’s non-existent. So, I don’t want to give you a rundown of a roster and scouting reports on all these guys because, you know, it’ be disingenuous on my part. Most of them I haven’t watched. We’ll watch them in summer league, but we’re trying to kind of focus on some of the real big picture players here and we’ll see. You know, the guy that Summerly could be most meaningful for, and it’s likely more going to be training camp and stuff, is Antonio Reeves, right? Was waved from the active roster. That makes sense just to try and maybe sign him for cheaper or something like that. You could save some money, but also just kind of, you know, I don’t know, make him work for it in a sense here. So, you know, maybe he has a chance if he really shows out in summer league to be have the Pelgans be like, “Oh, yeah, we got to get him in training camp. We got to maybe promise him a deal.” Something along those lines. It’s TBD right now, I think, when it comes to him and and what that could be and how that could look for the team. But he’s probably the, you know, if I had to give you one, it’s the guy you’ve kind of already seen. Antonio Reeves needs to probably show out a good bit in summer league to at least kind of fight for a spot in the NBA or G-League at the very least. So, that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked Pelicans. As always, I’m your host Jake Madison. Nola Jake on Twitter. We are part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. tomorrow. Let’s look at coaching staff and Dejonte Murray. There was a really great question that I’m gonna I want more time to go into along with a question about the coaching staff. So, I want to spend some more time on that. It’s basically going to be two topics over the whole show tomorrow. I’m looking forward to that one. I’m looking forward to summer league. I’m just happy to be here talking hoops with y’all. So, I appreciate y’all so much for listening. As always, I’m your host Jake Madison, Nola Jake on Twitter. 1. No to CP because Willie will give him to many minutes over the young players. But before he can I think Joe would stop him

  2. I remember a couple seasons back when all I wanted was a Malcolm Brogden Miles Turner trade. Oh how it could have all been so different 😢

  3. Brogdon has a long injury history…not something we need. CP3 would be a nice ending to his career❤

  4. All three of those players have other suitors. The Pelicans aren't in a position to outbid another team, thatvhas potential to go to the playoff. We lose out on all three Free Agents.

  5. I think getting vet at guard would be very bed idea not only would you probably lose Jose it would be very detrimental to Fears progress because you would have 2 to 3 point guard ahead of him. Very bad idea

  6. If the Pelicans wanted a veteran point guard that they can AFFORD they would've kept Elfrid Payton. They might be able to get Ben Simmons, or Gary Payton Jr., since they're shopping at GSW Thrift Store. Ben Simmons might be another Dumars reclamation project

  7. I agree with you about what you said about Summer League! Most of the guys will probably wind up overseas or the G League for the most part. And like you said too, wouldn’t mind Birmingham having a good team and having these guys in the system in case you need to call someone up.

  8. Remember when there was someone playing for the pelicans summer league team that went perfect from 3 on a high number of attempts.

  9. Cp3 would mean Jose is out of here! Not sure they like each other after that playoff series. Also, that doesn’t add any height!
