Jonathan Kaminga entered restricted free agency last week, which means any team in the league can sign to an offer sheet and the Warriors can match that offer. Uh that is yet to happen. According reports, he’s looking for a deal in the $30 million a year range. Uh several teams interested in acquiring the service of the 22-year-old forward via signing trade with reports that if the Warriors do decide to trade him, they are seeking a promising young player and first round pick in return. So Kaming was in the doghouse towards the end of the season, but came on strong in the playoffs. During a recent interview with Tim Kawakami on his TK podcast, Kerr had this to say about how Kaminga fits with this Warrior squad. you know, it’s a tricky one because Jonathan obviously is gifted and and um you know, wants to play a bigger role and and wants to play more and um you know, for me it’s like this is a I’ve been asked to to win. And um right now he’s not a guy who I can say I’m going to play 38 minutes um with the roster that we have. um Steph and and and Jimmy and uh Draymond and and put the puzzle together that way and expect to win. Um doesn’t mean he’s not a really good player. It doesn’t mean he’s not talented. It just means the fit and with the roster that we have. Um it’s um it is tricky. There’s no question. That’s why I saw your face while you’re watching that. Your former coach Steve Kerr his son Nick Kerr member of the Warrior staff now. Nicker. Yeah. See, that’s the [ __ ] that kills me. He wanted to say Preszinski too so bad. He He wanted to say that Curry Presinski. I don’t see how I could play him over him. But Steve Courage is cold, man. I the mind games he play and with certain players is he don’t give him confidence at all. It’s just if you’re not them three he mentioned, it’s hard to play for him really. You don’t see Steve Kerr’s comments force you to crack a cold one. Take some extended sips of your Miller light. What’s your reaction when you get when you get him for the love? Nah, brother. Yeah, you wouldn’t. That’s That’s a language nobody wants to hear right there. What language does that? Yeah, he he’s basically s we used to have that word. We have the word in the early 2000s when you don’t we got a very very talented player right there but he can’t be on the court and the words listen of someone told the great Charles Outlaw. This was a few weeks ago when Kirb said these comments uh obviously prior to free agency kicking off, but when you hear him say stuff like that. So this is Go ahead. I don’t But so this is my thought about it, right? He says one thing about winning, right? He’s supposed to be in a position to win. He’s talented. Mhm. So wouldn’t how much you make a year, Steve Ker? You you you know what it you know what it is. Yeah, I know exactly what it is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So he’s trying to say it without saying it like right he good but uh so and trying to win. I think he’s making close to $18 million a year at this point. Well, Steve, you got to figure it out, brother. Damn. 18 mill. Listen, I hear you brother. paid coach in the NBA right now. I hear you, Steve. Yeah. You Yeah. Your your dollar amount say you need to win. Yes. And you might can’t trust him all the time, but hey, brother, if you’re trying to win, I think him 18, 19 can help. I know. I know. That’s the bad part because night can help. You know what it is? It’s imagine you have you have a si gota remember this is s he has a si it’s not like every other team here you got to know plays there’s a system there’s reaction kaminga don’t know how to react and do all that he’s talented to be out there okay and the 18 how he scores goes against the offense and he’s like yeah you swing it to him you know what he going to do with it so that’s my thing with it. So, you know what it is, right? So, let’s put him in that role. Let’s put him in the six-man role. You know what it is, right? You know what you’re getting out of him. You know exactly what he’s going to cuz you have a large sample size of what he is and what he’s going to do when he’s with the minutes you give him. You know what he going to do? He’s an aggressive offensive mindset basketball player. This what got me drafted. This is why I am here. This is why people paid me some attention in the first place. So why would I change that now that I’m here? I hear you, coach. But they y’all picked me in this role, man. I was this when I when I showed up. Now you trying to ask me to be some [ __ ] totally different. Yeah. So let’s help him out. If he’s talented and you think you can use him in some capacity, some facet, let’s figure it out. Let’s put him in that role. Then you can like we said Louis Will said on his couch of the sixman now you control his dollar amount. That’s what you’ve been trying to do. You’ve been trying to control how much you going to pay him. Yeah. So here you go. Put him in the sixman role. Pay him as a six-man. Mhm. Anything from 15 to 20 you can live with cuz it’s that. You ain’t got to run your system when he out there. I guarantee when Jamal Crawford got on the floor, whatever team he was on, give him the ball. Throw it to him. We need a bucket. Lou Will, we need a bucket. Nick Young, we need a bucket. Jr. Smith, we need a bucket. Manobi, we need a bucket. Let’s throw the ball to them cuz we Vinnie Johnson, the microwave. You want me to [ __ ] keep going? We have guys that’s played this role. What? Could they be starters in this NBA? Yes. But they have a role and we know what they are. Let’s let them thrive in that. He ain’t getting He didn’t sign off shooting last year. So, last season, I think there was a supportive deal on the table. He thought he was worth more bread. I think that number has now come down to around what he would have got last year. But I like the six roll. You guys You guys will have freedom. That’s my thing. So like he don’t they don’t get no listen. So like the way Jordan Pool plays you’ll be like you did it with but you don’t want to do you did it with Jordan right and you won. So that’s why he said he doesn’t have like so like simple plays like that. And that’s basketball terms. That’s what he said. He said he’s a low IQ basketball player and I can’t tr and I can’t trust him. I trust him and I can’t win with him. I heard that. But second game I heard that. First game I came out had like 20. Second game try to do the same thing. And we don’t do that here. We we play winning basketball here. We don’t do that [ __ ] Who who said that to you? Draymond said, “Okay, Draymond, we don’t do that here.” It was like they was It was in a timeout with So everybody could hear him saying that to you. Yeah. How did that make you feel, Swaggy? I was like, “Damn, bro. Well, you said [ __ ] up.” Yeah. And it’s not if it’s not even It’s not even being high or low IQ. It’s just the system itself is designed around Curry’s IQ and Draymond’s IQ. So, you don’t think like that then, which that’s that’s top tier. You become dumb. You come you become basketball dumb to their system. We ran the same [ __ ] You think now he has to coach? No. No. No. Now he has to coach Kaminga. Yeah. So you think about everybody he won with Barbosa Livingston. I don’t have to coach that group. They know how to play basketball, man. He got to coach. So that’s what his frustration is. So that’s the frustration cuz you got to coach now. You got to work now. I got to coach him by extra. [ __ ] had a heart attack. 38 38 still. But moving back to Kaminga. Obviously been reports of Warriors looking to move him. Is it best for Kaminga and the Warriors for them to trade him this summer? Let’s part ways, man. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t know. Yeah. At this point, or find a role for him and let’s thrive in it. Or let’s I don’t even know if you can find a role after he You can’t. But if you’re not this this time so are the Warriors playing themselves by diminishing Kaminga’s value in the trade market if this was a route you want to trade him say I don’t want to promising young player in a first round pick that’s the reports Anthony Slater trade but put him in a doghouse towards the end of the season. Yeah if you’re trying to trade a guy like if you’re trying to trade a guy talking [ __ ] about him doesn’t help the trade cuz now I know you you got to get rid of him. what he say playoffs. I don’t know. He ain’t got no he don’t know where to play him at. Same thing he did to Jason T. Like it’s like it’s it’s that’s a fine line when you’re trying to get rid of a player for the value but you’re devaluing it in real time. Right. If you can say, “Hey, we just don’t know where to fit him at because you know this is who we have at the four and he’s a fourtime champ.” You know what I mean? Like you use those type of words like we don’t have time to rebuild. Very good player. If Steph retires next year, this is our future. But unfortunately, right now we we just got to we can’t we can’t afford him. Say some dumb [ __ ] like that, right? And then people like, “Okay, a super max level player.” What you need first round is, “Okay, cool.” But you started saying [ __ ] like this, like, “Oh, basketball dumb.” [ __ ] he fit right in over here. Here, I got you two second rounders and all you can eat at Shakys. see if you gonna take it. You know, they just now I get to negotiate with you. Damn. So, he gonna have to play this year out or take something sick. So, I think what they tended a qualifying offer if I’m not mistaken, what they’re expecting him to do. And now what? I think the So, he has he was I think the end of his rookie deal. They tended that qualifying offer to retain his rights obviously keep him as a restricted free agent. And that’s Yeah. So, he just So, it’ll be one more year. No, I mean if he qualifying offer Yeah. So if he decides to take that, I think he become a unrestricted free agent next year. Yeah. See, it doesn’t that’s or test free agency. Oh, that is devastating. That I don’t know, man. It would be I don’t know who people’s agents be when they be having that qualifying offer like anything. Who is right now though at that position? Man, they drafted five first round pick. I listen I knew trouble. The Nets drafted five first round NBA record five first round picks. Huh? The Nets. They just main guy like the number one guy. The number one guy going to get paid. Yeah, that’s them great role players, the midlevel guys, I mean the guys that’s like the giddies and those second third options that’s getting big money, they going to get screwed because teams that don’t want to go on the second apron, they’re like, I don’t know what it is. I don’t know how it’s going to handle. The language is [ __ ] me up. So, I’m just going to try to stay under the cap. So, next summer, teams are going to be dumping money again. What’s the sec second? It’s going to be fire. What is that? What is the second? Y’all keep saying that. What is this? I mean, just once you reach that second apron, it’s a bunch of just janky [ __ ] that you can’t do anymore. You can’t like like salary related, trade related. You can only basically sign like vet minimums. You can’t, you know, that team juice to finesse with with moves to bring more money in or take more money out. So, everybody’s trying to avoid it obviously and basically penalize the teams for want to be good and spend bread. They penalize teams that want to be good. That’s crazy. That’s they’re trying to make an even playing field. But in the that’s hard to do a benefit though. Benefit you get a you get a Thunder Pacers final. So like that. Yeah, it’s a benefit. Imagine being bomber and they telling you you can’t spend your money. You got to you got to buy the whole NBA, right? Just to change the Let me just buy all this [ __ ] man.
