Did The Philadelphia 76ers Fix Their BIGGEST Problem After SNEAKY Free Agency Signing?

Did The Philadelphia 76ers Fix Their BIGGEST Problem After SNEAKY Free Agency Signing?

Have the 76ers been able to fix their biggest problem they were facing heading into this off season based off some of the free agency moves they have made including a sneaky signing they made here today. That might just be the case. I’m Jay Chipper. You’re watching the 76ers now by chat sports. Before we get into the main topic of today’s show, we love competition here in the walls at chat sports and between myself here at 76ers now and my friend Nick Rolloloff at the Miami Heat Report, we are racing to see who can hit 25,000 subscribers first. Right now, Heat Report have about a 600 700 subscriber lead over us, but they were about a th000 subscribers ahead of us not too long ago. So, the race it’s getting tighter. If you’re looking for a place to get Sixers coverage every single day, I encourage you to hit that sub button and join us here. I promise you, you will not regret it. So, let’s get into the first signing the Sixers made just a few hours ago here. Shams Chirania breaking the news. The Sixers signing former Spurs and Hawks forward Dominic Barlo on a two-way NBA contract. So, not a standard roster spot here for Barlo, but he will be joining the organization nonetheless, filling up one of the Sixers, three two-way spots in order to make room for Dominic Barlo. The Sixers did release Alex Ree, who was on a two-way deal. Played well for the Sixers at points last year, but I think an upgrade here with Dominic Barlo. More on the player here. 69, 221 pounds with a 7 foot three wingspan. So, Sixers fans are going to be happy. I already know with the size profile and the potential skill set he can bring. Also just 22 years old. So a young player who fits that mold of that forward position that the Sixers have been prioritizing since letting Gershon Yabasle walk. Did attend St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia. Born in Jersey, attended St. Joe’s Prep. Did not actually attend or play basketball in college. played for the overtime elite program which back in in the 2022 time a lot of players were doing went undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft but was picked up by the San Antonio Spurs. Spent two seasons there before spending last season with the Atlanta Hawks. And certainly his NBA career nothing special, nothing to write home about, but with again his height, his skill set, and the emerging role he’s had on some of these teams in the past couple of years, you know, it’s a good depth signing. somebody that I think could have made a regular roster somewhere else but again the numbers four points three rebounds career 52% shooter from the field and you can see not a great three-point shooter as well but you know with some of the signings Philadelphia has made Trenan Watford they bring in Jabari Walker as well on a two-way you know I think this kind of skill set on a two-way deal and it’s very low risk and you get in a young player who is athletic with again the size the wingspan he plays very well in the paint, that seven foot three wingspan’s gonna play. So, you just hope you can develop those kind of players, increase their skill set, and then use the natural tools they have. So, the Sixers now, all three two-way spots still full. As I mentioned, they were full before they released Alex Ree, who was on a two-way, replace him with Barlo, now joining Hunter Salis as well as Jaw Walker, excuse me, on those two-way deals. So, all the spots filled up. I imagine these three will be the three heading into next season. I don’t think any of these guys are in danger of losing those two-way spots. I did see some people say they kind of wish Judah Mintz got that less two-way deal, but look, Philadelphia clearly prioritizing bringing in guys with size who can play that four position, especially after losing Gershon. So, this brings me back to the main topic and the main question I pose at the top of today’s show. Have the Sixers fixed their biggest problem? What is that problem you might be asking? Some of you might be thinking it’s a Joel Embiid problem. It’s a health problem. Look, I’m looking at their biggest problem that they can tangibly and reasonably reasonably fix. Okay? Not something that they just got to hope they can stay healthy or, you know, hope Joel Embiid Paul George return. Their biggest problem that they can reasonably fix that hurt them last season. And that problem was rebounding and size in general. Right now, of course, has to do a little bit with Embiid not being on the roster or not playing a whole lot, excuse me. But look, even with Embiid out there on the floor, this was still an issue for Philadelphia. They were 30th in the NBA in rebounds per game at 38.9. If you don’t know, there’s only 30 teams in the NBA. Okay, so dead last. 25th in opponent rebounds per game and then dead last in rebounding percentage, dead last in defensive rebounding percentage. It was a big issue for Philadelphia in large part because they didn’t have the personnel and the size at the four spot to help out some of their big men when it came to rebounding. Joel Embiid obviously Hobbled wasn’t able to rebound the level he was able to before. You run Paula George at the four, Kelly Ubé at the four. They’re just not natural fours, right? Giancele could do a little bit down there, but not a tremendous rebounder. Adam Bono was a rookie. Andre Drummond was in and out of the lineup and wasn’t as effective. So, it was a big issue. So, the Sixers this off season did seem to prioritize bringing in new players at that four spot to help with this issue. We mentioned Dominic Barlo and Jabari Walker on two-way deals. Look, yes, they’re two-way contracts, but I think both of these guys will end up playing decent minutes for Philadelphia, especially Jabari Walker. One, the Sixers are very injuryprone, but two, I guess they filled this need for Philadelphia that they didn’t really fill on the regular roster, although they did a little bit by adding Trendan Watford at 68. And then, of course, they draft Jai Broom in the second round at 610. All these guys you see 67 and above should be able to help with that size problem, that rebounding problem that really punct Philadelphia. if you’re not rebounding the basketball, man, it’s very simple, but it’s very hard to win games when you’re not doing that. So, adding these four forwards, all six, seven or above, especially someone in Broom who I think is going to play significant time, even a Watford think is going to have a big role in two two-way guys, that tells me Daryl Moy is at least trying to address this issue. Plus, you know, VJ Hcomkcom, I know he’s a guard. I know he’s 6’4, 6’5 on a good day, but but the way he plays with his athleticism, we saw it in his first summer league game, he does attack the glass. Had 10 rebounds in that opening game and attacks both sides of the glass, offensive, defensive, and especially once he’s playing with this regular Sixers roster. I think that’ll be a big part of his role is getting those loose balls, being scrappy, attacking the offensive glass, right? And the Sixers are going to desperately need that. So, I think BJ will help in that regard despite being a smaller player. Adam Bona entering year two now. Can he be even better than he was last year? Because again, as a rookie, as a second round pick, yeah, he had his good moments, but had a lot of bad moments as well. Right. So, I’m looking for Adam Bona as well to improve in that regard, become a better rebounder, a more fundamental rebounder because he’s got the athleticism, right, to go up, get boards even though he’s a little bit shorter, about 68, 69. I want his fundamentals to be better. Also got to talk about Andre Drummond because I don’t think he’s going to be on the roster as we heading into next season. He is, as of this moment, I think Philadelphia ends up trading Andre Drummond, but you know, in theory, a very good rebounder. last year was not really the case. Now still does do that at a pretty high level. Not the all-time rebounder he once was. But is he able to bounce back this season potentially and help the Sixers in that in that regard? I think he was brought in for that reason. Unfortunately, it just did not pan out. And then of course, as I mentioned before, Joel Embiid, what kind of version do we get of him? I imagine even if he’s a little more healthy than we’ve seen in the past really season and a half, you know, how much of priority is is he going to be placing on rebounding the basketball and how much is he going to want to save himself and save his knees and his body for the offensive end of the floor and really putting in points as opposed to rebounding the basketball. So, I think it’s going to be a gang effort, but with the bodies the Sixers brought in, I think they’re at least trying to address the issue. But again, brings back to the original question. Did they fix it? It’s a simple yes or no. Had the Sixers solved their rebounding issue. And while I like what they’ve done, especially on the margins, right? Didn’t have a lot to work with this off seasonason. Didn’t have too much flexibility to bring in super impactful players. So, I like what they’ve done on the margins in the second round of the NBA draft. Bringing in Janai Broom, signing these guys to minimums in two ways. They’re getting creative with ways to address this issue, and I’m glad they identified it and are attacking it in the best way they can, but unfortunately, I think the best way they can just isn’t going to be enough to really see a significant upgrade. Are they going to be the worst rebounding team in the league? Again, I don’t think so. I think they’ll be a little bit better, but I think they’re still going to be, at least with the way the roster is currently constructed, a below average rebounding team. So although the signings are certainly intriguing, there’s potential there. A lot of them are lower level guys that have to prove they can get it done at this level playing bigger minutes. So I’m going to say right now I don’t think the issue has been fixed. I don’t think they’ve done enough to completely fix the issue. I think they’ll be a little bit better and at the very least they are trying and throwing darts at the board hoping one can stick. What say you? Did the Sixers do enough to fix their rebounding issue with the additions they have made this off season? Do you think that will be a strength for this team? Do you think they’ll be at least average? Will they just be bad? Once again, let me know. Did they do enough? Give me a yes or no down in the comment section. Real quick before we hop on out here, got some news before was putting this show together. The NBA Cup groups have been drawn. It’s a random drawing. Of course, there is three groups per conference, five teams per group. The Sixers will be in East group B with the Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, and Brooklyn Nets. So, we look ahead to the NBA Cup starting, I think, around November going into December, that’ll be the group they play. Of course, the winner of each group does advance advance to the knockout stage, the playoff stage, along along with one wildcard team from each conference. So you can see the the fall groups here listed on the screen. Uh Sixers with the Celtics, Pistons, Magic, a pretty competitive group there. Uh Brooklyn, excuse me, going to be pretty bad, but uh that is what their NBA Cup opponents will be. Sixers have loftier goals and winning the NBA Cup, but it’s an exciting time nonetheless.
