So, I feel like I’ve got pretty good grasp on the Boston Celtics, but this upcoming season, who knows what’s happening, and that’s going to be the focus of basically every podcast this summer. Today’s podcast is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use the code lockdown NBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. I talked about yesterday I played the clips from Brad Stevens Celtics. Clearly things are changing. Clearly Joe Mazula has his work cut out for him. Summer league is going to be the first test. So later in the show, the second half of the show is going to be more summer league focus. what what do we think we’re going to see there that can be uh extracted and applied to the regular season? But let’s just start with a discussion here about the pressure on Joe Moula this upcoming season. And I know one person who can handle the pressure. It’s Tom Wester home. Tom, buddy, what is going on? I really wish that you had some something that I could come out to like I was a UFC fight um that I could come out to for this uh podcast like uh Joe Mazula likes to likes to think about. I need some like can be moved, can be rocked, something, you know, something to uh let me let me see here. Right. How’s this? Yeah, I like that. Yeah. And now [Music] that’s a lot better. That’s a lot better. Thank you. What’s the home? [Music] Tommy Tommy Dubs. I like that. Thank you. Yeah, that’s that’s so much better. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Okay. So, that was fun. Uh we do I have to do that every time now? Yeah. No. It’s like a toddler, man. You can’t like play the game like one time. Yeah, it’s going to be Why did you play the song? I’m I’m going to I’m going to start playing the I got some Ugo music. This is This is like Yeah. This is like All right. Here we go. This is when I come in smooth. Yeah. Yeah. Feel like I kind of feel like I want to freestyle to this. Okay, I’m going to stop that because I’m not freestyling to this. We’re going to talk about Joe Mazula. Uh because every every podcast is a freestyle when you think about it. It really is. It really is. It’s a it’s a one long 30-minute freestyle where we do not rhyme. Yeah. It’s it’s so much less cool than a freestyle. It’s not as cool, but it’s you know freestyle adjacent. Yeah. You know. Yeah. I’m gonna have Milliey’s on the show here at some point this summer. So, uh you know that I’ll get an actual freestyle out of Milliey’s. He’ll I could give him a 10-minute segment and be like, “Okay, this whole segment is you freestyling and he would do it.” So, can you uh make sure that you tell him how much I love his uh Bernie Sanders line and in uh I think it’s Blanco Trace. It’s It’s so good. Uh okay. Yeah. I I haven’t heard that one, so I’ll But I’ll tell them. I’m a big Milliey’s guy. Anyway, continue. Okay. So, Joe Maza 420 is where we start the show. Put it in your time stamps, everybody. Uh so appropriate that we start at 420, but okay, never mind. Uh Joe Missoula is uh this is going to be a whole new season for him. Like this is unlike anything that he’s he’s dealt with right here in in the NBA, you know, even joining Brad Stevens staff. He’s always been part of a good team and all of that stuff. Um he kind of stumbled into a ready-made winner, right? You know, and he admits that. He’s like, “Yeah, I got lucky.” and boom, here we go. And so you won a championship. Uh you had two years where you could have uh it didn’t work out. Now no one expects a championship. No one expect If it wasn’t the Eastern Conference, I don’t know if people would expect the playoffs. Mhm. I still kind of do because I think Jaylen and D White and Pritchard and Hower and those th those guys are good enough to win I don’t know at least 40 games. So, but we don’t know who he has. He doesn’t know who he has. It came out uh Brian Winhorse said on the on the Hoop Collective podcast, Celtics are actively shopping Anthony Simons, which is no surprise. My first reaction to that trade was, okay, what’s next? He’s not going to play for the Celtics. Not a surprise, but come on, Brad. I know. I know you I know that that hurts you personally. It’s I mean look it’s the right move. Yeah. Yeah, it is. I’m like I just can Can I just get Can I have a bucket getter one time? It’s not the Tom one time. It’s not the Tommy Dubs move. Yeah, I know. I know. It hurts. Yeah. Look, you Pritchard Pritchard’s a your bucket getter. He’s He’s gonna be your bucket. I know. I know. Sure. What kind of pressure do you think is on Joe Missoula for this upcoming season? I think it’s interesting, right? Because I think that most a lot of the pressure is sort of it has more to do with like the discussion around Joe Mazula than I think it does with Joe Mazula himself. Like it’s almost like it’s his reputation more so than it’s like the actual pressure because I don’t I don’t think that Joe Mazula is in any danger if the Celtics start losing, you know? Like I think that it’s just Joe Mazula is going to be coaching this team. I think barring a revolt that I don’t think is coming because everybody likes him and everybody, you know, he seems to have everybody’s ear. So like, let’s be clear here. I’m sorry to interrupt, but Brad Stevens, we asked him again. I asked the question the first Brad Stevens press conference about an extension, and Brad was like, “No, he he’s he’s here for multiple years. We love him. He’s staying.” And then it was asked again the second one with a little bit more clarity. He has multiple years left on his contract and the Celtics want him around for a long time. Yeah. Now that could be GM speak, but also they love him. The players love him. Derek White would probably jump in front of a moving bus for the guy. Yeah. You know, like these guys truly, honestly, why would anybody fire the head coach that just won a championship two seasons ago and every player loves him? And you know what? I think that one thing that’s a little bit underrated with that is that Brad Stevens knows Jaylen and Jason extraordinarily well and he knows the kind of coach that they’re going to respond to well. He knew because like I mean look he he coached them for a long time and then he stepped aside and what do you know the two coaches that he’s had one Udoka you know indiscretions aside yes was somebody who Jaylen and Jason respected and liked. I mean, he got a lot out of those guys. The guy that Brad brings in next, Joe Misoula. Another guy that those guys seem to respect and gets a lot out of those guys. So, I don’t think that pressure on Joe Mazoula. I don’t think that there’s a lot in terms of are you going to lose your job? Are you going to yada yada really realistically this is kind of just a a by year? You know, it’s just kind of like but I think that there is some pressure in terms of the way that Joe Misoula is discussed, right? Because It is very easy to craft a narrative. And look, if there’s one thing we know, it’s that if the narrative is easy, it will be crafted. It will sure be hammered. If this team loses a lot, it’s going to be like, “Oh, that jump, you know, he can really only do he can really only win with good players, which incidentally is stupid. That’s how it works. That’s how it works.” Yeah. It turns out that’s how it works, right? But like but I mean I think that there you know there will be some measure of like well Joe should be getting more out of these guys. is, you know, he’s got a finals MVP on the floor, like, you know, yada yada, which I mean, sure, there’s probably some small amount of pressure to win in that regard, but there’s none in terms of like his job security. And that’s in the NBA, it’s like how much for a head coach, how much pressure is there on you in a season where you know your job’s not really on the line and also you know that the expectation is not that high of you? You know what I mean? Like, yes. How much pressure is there really in that regard? So, I’ll ask you a question. I’ll give you the break to think about it and then you’ll answer it on the way back maybe. What is the win total? You will answer it, Tom. Uh what is the win total knowing that the Anthony Simons trade, whatever he’s going to become, uh it’s going to be less than Anthony Simons? Uh, what is the win total where people go, “Okay, Joe Joe did it. Joe’s Joe’s actually a good coach.” Okay, think about that. We’ll come back. We’ll answer that after the break. So that’s tomorrow’s podcast covering summer league. The big stories about summer league. We’re talk we’re still talking about games as they’re going on. It’s a seven day a week podcast. Locked on NBA can cover the bigger stories. Uh something like Devin Booker getting two years and $145 million from the Phoenix Suns. That’s going to be a big topic on lockdown NBA for sure. 70 was it 72.5 million dollars a year. The money the money in this league. Uh so go check those podcasts out wherever you get your podcast. Uh, two Tom two years $145 million is Listen, I’m pro player. I’m pro get your money. And this is this is part of the like the the owners get half, the sell the the the players get half. And but it’s just the the half that they’re getting now. That is uh that is huge. Wow. Yeah. 70. Wow. I mean, there are This is where an old person like me goes, “Man, there are some Hall of Famers.” Hall of Famers like I I don’t even know what Larry Bird’s I Google Larry Bird career earnings uh because it’s not going to be 70 uh according to Google’s AI $24 million. Yeah. Um and has so it says here endorsement deals other business ventures contribute to a total net worth of 75 million which is just about a little bit more than what Deon Booker is going to make in one season. Well, I mean it’s crazy to look back on. I mean, what was the what was that? What was Garnett’s crazy contract that like people like that was six years? 127, I think. Six for one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Six years. Six years 126. Yeah. Which like Yeah. I mean, you know, the lockout that that was like that was, you know, like 100 that that’s that’s that’s what like 20 21 million a year. Like Yeah. It and and Booker’s getting 145 over two. Crazy. Good for Devin Booker. Good for Deon Booker. Yeah. Uh Okay. So, before the break, I asked you what the win total was. What’s the win total for even the staunchest Joe Mazula critics that are going to go, “Okay, he did a good job.” I think I I think it’s I think it’s high actually. I think it’s like I think it’s more than 50. Like I think he he would have to win like 50 games like really. Here’s the thing because I think that like you can again you talk about easy to craft narratives, right? I think it has to be over 50 for Missoula because but like you said the staunchest critics, right? Yeah. Yeah. Sure. The staunchest critics are going to be, it’s very easy to be like, well, you still got a finals MVP out there. You still got Pritchard. He he he could be a starter on all the teams. Derek White’s like every, you know, he was the second best player on the team sometimes, you know, yada yada. That would be a very easy argument to put together. And again, easy is usually one that gets made. So like, yes, I think that to to get everybody on board 50. I think to be reasonable, right? to like for more more reasonable people. I think what like he could he could get to 500 with this team, right? Like this that would be I think I think 45 45 is the number that I’m going to go with. I think that’s sure. I think that’s reasonable. You know, you 45 and 37. I mean that I think with this team you you you have Yes. Jaylen Brown. Like I think that would acquit everybody nicely because it’s still like Jaylen can only play so much. Yeah. Derek can only play so you’re going to have a lot of lineups with just Derek White. It’s like like Derek White, Payton Pritchard, and Baylor Shyman are going to be your three scorers, right? And it’s like all right. Like that’s Derek White is great, but we haven’t seen him play outside of the context of like a a stacked team and yeah, for sure. Just to cut in, we have seen him play as a star player on some like like we’ve seen the occasional game where he has stepped up and had like a big game when other guys are out, but it’s so different. So different to have that responsibility over the course of a season when teams are game planning for you and like you’re under the spotlight all the time. Yeah, that’s a huge shift. That’s that’s gonna be that’s a that’s a much different animal. That is not easy. you’re when the other team is game planning for you as the number one guy like that’s that’s tough. Uh so look he’s going to have to like you he’s going to get double teamed. Yeah. Right. Derek Derek White is the guy worried about Jordan Walsh. Right. Derek White is the guy that that got the ball out when when other guys got double teamed. Yeah. Exactly. Now, now there’s going to be lineups where they’re going to throw doubles at him all night long, right? And and Jaylen’s going to have Jaylen’s not going to play every game. He’s not playing 82. It would be stupid to play him 82 games. Correct. Right. Like coming off of what even if minor niece or whatever, like I kind of think it would be stupid to play him like 30 plus, but that’s not Well, Jaylen, this is a whole other podcast. Yeah, but but Jaylen’s Jaylen’s trying to prove something. Yeah. This year Jaylen wants to Jaylen, you said 50 wins. If J if someone played Jaylen that clip, he’d be like, “Bet, got it. 50. I’m going for.” He wants more than anything, I can I I haven’t even talked to him or anything like that. I can tell you with utter confidence that Jaylen Brown if he could pick one way 50game winner with him as the number one guy and I tell you what Celtics wouldn’t mind that either. Yeah. Because at some point here like the the the true rebuild in earnest is going to happen. And if you have this evidence of, you know, like we’re we’re gonna go with still Jaylen and Jason and all of that stuff for the next couple years, but this 25 26 season, you saw what he did on his own. He proved that. So pony up all the first round picks unprotected. Give me your pick swaps. Give me your young players because this dude just proved it. And so J, no doubt that he wants all of that stuff. And look, 50 would be to me a a almost miracle number. You get if this team gets the 50 wins. Yeah. That that stamps Jaylen, that stamps Joe, that stamps like Derek, I don’t even want to say Brad because Brad had nothing to do with this, but you know, Brad Brad’s the one like who’s trying to depress all the numbers. that team goes out and wins 50, but like that that would rival the the Isaiah Thomas overachieving years. That would be in that class. We don’t have the same story as Isaiah. Is Isaiah was a story. It’s not the same story, but in terms of achievement, that team really overachieved. This would be right behind I think right behind that Isaiah Thomas. they get to 50. Yeah, that would be crazy for me. 45, I think, is the ceiling. If they got to 45, I think you could look around and be like, look, Joe and Jaylen got this group of guys. George Niang, if he isn’t traded, they got they got like Jaylen and Derek are great, but look at all the other guys. Limited in every other guy is limited in some way, right? Payton Pritchard, awesome, but he’s small and so there’s limitations there. Sam Hower is is a nice player, but and holds his own defensively, but come on, you can’t ask him to do too much. He often holds his own, but you know what I’m saying? Like they’ve got no center there. Their front court is Apologies to all of the front court players right there. Awful. Awful. Okay, so we’ve completely sidetracked here, but the front court thing is gonna bring me back. We’ll talk I want to talk about summer league because I think there needs to talk about Amari Williams. Well, I mean, where we actually kind of need to talk about Amari. We kind of we kind of do need to talk about him. Yeah. Um because I don’t know, there’s he could be part of the answer. Yeah. Uh we’ll see. Uh, that’s coming up next. But an answer, an answer. All right. Thanks everybody for making Lockdown Celtics your first listen every day. Appreciate you being subscribed. Hey, five days a week for the next couple of weeks uh through July. Three days a week, August, September, back to five days a week after that. Every podcast is free, so make sure you’re subscribed. Joe is gonna have to figure something out. And I I I love the conversation about uh the the quote from Brad Stevens uh where he says, “I’m excited to see what this team has in store. I know Joe’s excited. Joe’s team, they’re trying a bunch of stuff out there now with our summer league team that we haven’t done in the past and I think will be good experimentation at the very least. That’s kind of where uh what we want to make sure we’re ready to maximize this group. summer league Friday something they’re trying something new I don’t know what it is my the first thing that popped in my head is okay zone defense some kind of crazy zone defense because look Luca Garz is probably going to start and you know he’s he’s a nice offensive player but uh I don’t know I don’t know where this goes there’s a lot of guys on this roster right now who are target practice on the defense. Yeah, pigeon hunting. Lots of pigeons. Lots of pigeons out there. Um I don’t know, man. Like summer league just got super interesting to me and it has almost nothing to do with Ugo Gonzalez or Gonzalez. Um this is a fun way to say the name and I I even botching the accent. You got to get that accent, right? Yeah. Uh and Mari Williams, Mario Williams also a good name. Uh those guys are guys that you I think like Ugo can be I don’t know what he’s going to be this year. He’s 19, you know, but his history, you know, Real Madrid’s been a pro for a while like okay, I could see a ninth tenth man kind of role maybe materializing. And Amari, look, I just told you that the front court is just hot garbage right now. And so he’s older than I think four or five different players on the roster already as a rookie. So there’s maturity there. He has a lot of experience in college. Um you know, let’s see what he can be as a screener, roller, short roll passing kind of big. I don’t know. Uh, but as much as those two guys are interesting to to look at and see what they can be, I’m looking at what Brad said, the experimenting with things, things that they’ve never done before. All of a sudden, Summer League is like, “Oh, okay. This is a little bubbling cauldron of witches brew, which plays into Joe and all right, let’s what do you what do you got for me, Joe? Let’s see it. Let’s start seeing it in summer. What do you got? What are you planning?” Yeah. Yeah. I went that the first time I that I heard that Brad quote about like, “Yeah, we’re going to be trying some stuff.” I was like, “Oh, like at Summer League, I was like, “Oh, okay. Ugo, let’s see uh let’s see him do a full court press. Maybe if the ball doesn’t get to the other side, then then our guys don’t have to play defense on that side. Stop them before half court, your half court defense gets a lot better. So, you know, try a little bit of that out.” Well, that’s that’s absolutely true, though. That could be something. Yeah, like you got a bunch of young guys that aren’t quite developed. So, Lauren, let’s just throw a bunch of these young guys out there and press and and get teams to start their offense with 10 on the shot clock. What team has overachieved the most over the last two years in the NBA? The Pacers, right? Like, oh, that’s right. I was going to say OKC. No, no, OKC’s got a bunch of studs. The Pacers to a wild degree. Why? Because they’re super chaotic. Now, that’s on the offensive end, but hey, if you’re the Celtics, like I don’t know what does chaos look like on the defensive end if you got a bunch of guys who aren’t as talented as the guys that you used to have. You used to have all these guys that you could just play like principal defense and, you know, like switch whatever you needed to switch because every single one of these guys was like super solid, you know, like not a not a hole on the court. Right now, there’s going to be a lot of them. So, I don’t know. Maybe uh you know maybe if you take a whisk and you just kind of mix everything up now you know there’s fewer holes on the court because everything’s a mess. So like I don’t know muck it up. When when you don’t have the skill you muck it up. You have enthusiasm. If you have enthusiasm you can muck it up. What’s the it’s the the game plan. Like if you got a good game plan that’s great. Like first of all number one effort. If you can put in the effort, then you’re going to be okay. Yeah. If you have effort and talent, you’re going to be really good. If you have effort, talent, and game plan, that you know, well executed game plan, you’re a championship contender. Like that’s the So the Celtics have like if they can be the tryards, great. Okay, that’ll make you decent. And then you say, well, they do have some talent. So, they are not just the tryhards, right? They’re the tryhards with a finals MVP and a former third team allNBA guy and and a guy who might have been on his way to third team all NBA if his if if his meniscus had stayed intact. Yeah. Um Derek White, you know, there are guys here. You have the six man of the year. You have you have guys you have people who have performed in an NBA finals. So, there is talent on this roster on top of the tryhard guys. So whether that’s all the way into that second level, sure, but you I don’t know. Will we No, but also I think it’s important to note that that also informs the potential effort side of things because what you have is a bunch of almost, right? You have or like borderline guys. You have the borderline all guy. You have the borderline all-star guy in Derek White. You have the borderline starter in Pton Pritchard. You got a lot of border lines who could really prove something with the effort. So if the effort is there, you might also have the talent. But like, so it gets interesting, right? And then the game plan part, which is what we’re talking about on this pilot. Back to Joe. If Missoula can come up with the game plan, and listen, I I I know that I’m probably in the top 1% of Joe Missoula believers out there. It’s because I like the way he thinks. It’s because when I hear him, I listen to him on the Julian Edelman podcast and I’m like I just I like the way his brain works. He talks about you always need to reinvent yourself. You always need to evolve. You have a small window to accomplish what you want to accomplish. Uh he talks about to be a good coach, you need to have the right players. You need to have the right attitude. You need to have like the players who allow you to be you. You got to allow the players to be that. And then together there at that point, you can work on the other stuff. like he he gets all of the important things. Like I really truly honestly believe it and that’s why I have bought all the way in to what Joe is doing. I think the three-point stuff and this is going to be my last point here. I think one thing that this upcoming season should show, I don’t think the Celtics are going to be the number one three-point attempt team this this upcoming season. They don’t have the drive and draw to guy outside of Jaylen. Jaylen’s going to have to sit. Derek can do it sometime. But then who is he passing to? You don’t have any bags for it anymore. Yeah. Right. So it’s the plan. The people who sit there and say all you do is jack threes. I think this this upcoming season is going to be the season where they go, “Oh, wait.” and and my I know what’s going to happen. They’re going to say, “Well, Joe made the adjustment and they’ll give him the credit for for adjusting and saying like, “Oh, we don’t have to shoot as many threes.” When the reality is he just had a bunch of guys that like to shoot threes and they were generally pretty good at it and that was a better shot than most of the shots that they could take and that’s why they took all of those threes. And the offense is going to run somewhat similarly. They’re going to probably introduce some new sets. Another thing that I’m looking for in summer league is the creative sets that they use to kind of spring some guys, but I think they’re still going to rely on read, react, make the next right play. It’s just the next right play isn’t going to always be a three-pointer. The next right play is probably going to be maybe a lot more mid-range. It’s going to be a little bit more kind of going to the rim and I don’t know, maybe maybe some of the contested stuff is going to be okay. Um, but it’s probably gonna be a different shot profile. And the the hard part is going to be convincing everybody like that’s still the same offense, the still the same strategy that Joe has always talked about. It’s just manifests itself different with different players. And I think that’s the I think that’s the thing. If the Celtics can win the 45 to 50 games, which again I think would be a miracle, but if they can do that without if they can take like 40 three-pointers, 45 three-pointers instead of 60, then that will be the the critics will be like, okay, okay, he’s he’s doing something different and they’ll they’ll start to come around on him. Yeah. Yeah. Because I I mean, I think you’re right, too. think that if if he managed to win 45 and the three-pointers came down, I think I think you’re right. I think that would be the other thing because then people be like, “Oh, yeah, like he’s he really really adjusted to things.” So, yeah. So, fair enough. I I I I changed my answer to 45 um because that that part makes sense. Um All right, Tom. Thank you so much. Yeah. Yeah. On that note, me being right again, this is where I end the podcast because I have that control. Tom, appreciate you as always. Appreciate you, man. Let me uh play out Tom Wesh. Yes, everybody. Tom Westerholm, still undisputed UFC champion. All right, let me turn that down. I can just leave this music up. This I’m going to play myself out, too. Um, thanks everybody for listening. Celtics 140 M on 3 players, OKC 120 M on 2 players. CBA will require a lot of superb financial engineering!
The beginning of this show is so long I genuinely skip 5 FULL MINUTES and it’s just starting … that is so ridiculous
You have a very good grasp of what's going on with the Boston Celtics.. love the Emerson College shirt!! Class of '97!
