Knicks Coaching Staff Takes A Hit | Mark Jackson Claps Back?

On today’s show, uh Mike Brown and the Knicks take a potential hit, a potential tough blow to their coaching staff hiring uh uh process here. We’ll talk about that and and some of the names that will make up Mike Brown’s staff. Plus, did Mark Jackson take a stab at the Knicks? Action. Jackson making some comments uh on the day that Mike Brown was introduced by the Knicks. So, we’ll take a listen to that and react to it as well. Quick show today. So, we got a lot of people pulling up to us on the Knicks um Knicks fan TV, Knicks Film School, and Left Coast Knicks meetup on Saturday night. It’s going to be a good one out in Las Vegas. All right, let’s get let’s get down to business, shall we? The Knicks coaching staff might have taken a little bit of a hit. You know, Mike Brown was introduced yesterday, and there’s been a lot of talk about what the staff will be, who will make up the the coaching staff because, you know, this is going to be a big emphasis here, the coaching staff, um who Mike Brown is bringing in, how do they work together, and how especially how do they work together with the front office? We want collaboration, right? Um, for a while now the expectation was that the Knicks were going to pursue James Burggo, former head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, currently the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. However, according to our guy Ian Begley, Knicks insider for SNY, he says Pelicans assistant coach James Berago, associate head coach James Bergo, a Knicks target for a lead spot of Mike Brown staff will be staying in New Orleans. Per League source is familiar with the matter. Knicks interviewed Burggo for their head coaching position and had interest in adding him to Brown’s staff, but he is highly valued by the Pelicans and is currently under contract, so he won’t be an option. All right. So, James Berago is off the table. What do we think about that? Because basically what it was said that, and Ian has mentioned this a number of times, was that the only reason why James Bergo was allowed to speak with the Knicks to begin with was because it was assumed that he was going to interview for the head coaching job. Maybe he was, or maybe they use that as an excuse for him to talk to the Knicks. But now that Mike Brown has been hired, it looks like the Pelicans are not allowing him to make a lateral move. And he’s a guy who’s known for his offensive schemes, his offensive skill sets, philosophy, and probably would have been here as used as the offensive coordinator for this team. So, very interesting. Ron B says, “Not a big deal.” Well, I’m not so sure because I think the way that this team wants to go in terms of the coaching staff is almost like an offensive and defensive coordinator type of situation. Remember when Mike Brown was with the Sacramento Kings and they had that they posted the number one ranked offense. A lot of people give credit to Jordy Fernandez, the Nets head coach who was the top assistant under Brown during that year with the Kings. You remember that’s part of the reason Jordi Fernandez got the job with the Nets because he had an impressive resume with the Kings. He had an impressive resume with team Canada in the FEA World Cup. And so he gets a head coaching job with the Nets. But you ask Kings fans, you ask people with uh more knowledge with the Kings. It was Jordy Fernandez who was the offensive coordinator with the Kings that allowed them to become the number one ranked offense in the NBA just a couple years ago. Once he left, they kind of came back to the pack a little bit. So the I think the fact that the Knicks were so highly after James Berago, I think it says a lot. So where do where do they go from here? What do you guys think in the chat? Is it a guy like a Terry Sts? He’s with Golden State. Does Mike Brown call Steve Ker, hey, do me a favor. Can we get Terry Sts over here? Where do we go from here? is an offensive coordinator really where the uh where the Knicks want to go here. So, I think that’s a little interesting. We also did hear that um they’re talking to Darvin Ham. Darvin Ham coached under Mike Brown with the Lakers and Phil Handy who also coached under Mike Brown. But those two guys are more so known as more player development focused rather than X’s and O’s. So they could still get here. But Phil Handy again, great reputation around the league, well-liked, but he’s more known as a player development coach. And I think where the the Knicks are trying to look for NX’s and O’s coach as their top assistant. I’m trying to turn these notifications down. Notifications going crazy right now. So that’s interesting. Now, as far as who is on the staff that we know of, this was Ian Begley’s commentary from yesterday’s press conference. He did mention Berago, but he mentioned a few people who are going to be carried over from Tibs’ staff to the Mike Brown staff. Here we go. Accountable and his approach with that and how it starts now with building relationships with the guys on this team and building a trust to the point where you can have honest conversations that you’re going to need to have over the course of an NBA season. Uh to me, that’s such a huge part of coaching in this league. Can you say what you need to say when a player is not playing well? Can that player respond? Can he trust you? So, Mike Brown starting to develop to develop those relationships already. He said he’s already talked to the whole roster. That’s very impressive. Uh, now he’s going to need to fill out his coaching staff. So, what is next specifically for him in that? Yeah, I’m expecting some holdovers from the Tom Fibido coaching staff. I would expect uh Maurice Cheeks. I would expect Mark Bryant, Rick Brunson, and Darren Irman to come over to Mike Brown’s staff. and he is going to be after James Berago. Barago an assistant in New Orleans. Okay, so that was from yesterday and we know that Barago is no longer an option, but you heard Ian say Darren Irman, Mark Bryant, the big man coach and as well as Rick Brunson will be carried over from Tibs’ staff. So, what do you think? What do you think about that? Question again is who will be running the offense? Is there anyone that’ll be tapped for running the defense? Call me up in the KFTV Discord and let me know what you think. So, those are some options there. I’m just talking to JD here. Okay. Okay. Boom. Boom. All right. So, th those are some options there. Now, this was this was a question that I was that I for that I was asked about yesterday after the Brown press conference and uh Oh, yeah. Moises Mochi was also um mentioned as a carryover. Fifth Row Mo is back with us. That’s cool. Fine. This was a question that was asked, someone asked in the comment section after the Mike Brown press conference reaction show that we did yesterday. And it was a topic that I forgot to me talk about on yesterday’s show and that was Rick Brunson, his role with the team, his role as coach. It was it’s been a question that even before the Knicks hired Mike Brown, people ask him what happens to Rick, what happens to Rick this, that and the third. Now, according to an article here from our guy Stefan Bondi, Nick’s insider with the New York Post, it looks like Rick Brunson will be, if you want to say, demoted, quote unquote, demoted from the associate head coach role to more of an assistant. Okay, we know that when he was with the associate coach of uh on the Tibs, he was responsible for some in-game strategy, rotations, so on and so forth. And I also believe player development. So, but I I I do think that this is topic is much do about nothing to be honest with you guys. That’s just my opinion. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal in terms of what Rick’s role is going to be. Is he here? Like I feel like when people are asking this question and and even this article, it’s almost as if to say, you know, there’s there’s there’s nepotism here. There’s too much cahoots here. Why is he here? Why is he a coach? And I just I I just think it’s an overreaction to be honest with you. Number one, he played in the NBA, played for the team. He’s been an assist He’s been a coach at every level. He’s been an assistant coach under Tibs before he even got here, before Jaylen even got here. Remember when he got here with Tibs, he wasn’t even the the associate head coach in the beginning. He was an assistant. Johnny Bryant out of nowhere was the associate head coach. Now, was that a play for Spider? I don’t know. You put your tinfo Kofy on and you think about that. So, the idea that like, you know, he he’s just here for why is he here? Why is he here? Look, as a to me in a in a coaching role, as a player development role, you got a million coaches on the staff. I don’t see the big deal in having him there. He’s part of the family with Leon Wes. And oh, by the way, he’s a father of the captain of the team. This this is not like some somebody’s random dad that they’re just putting on the staff to do somebody a favor. So, I just think that, you know, the we’re trying to generate some sort of conflict here that, in my opinion, is just not there. Now, you you had the article that came out from, I think it was Hoops Wire or something like that that said, you know, some players complained that he was a distraction or he had too much power, whatever the case may be. I don’t know. I I can’t confirm whether or not that’s true. Look, you’re not going to be wellliked by everybody. You can’t be all things to all people. Maybe there was a player that he rubbed the wrong way. Pause. Maybe. Who knows? Everybody’s not going to like you. But I just think in the grand scheme of things when it comes to the team, where the team is going, I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal. he should be moved back to an assistant coach if they believe that they want an offensive coordinator, someone who is more uh more concentrated on the X’s and O side of the ball where that’s probably not his area, that’s not his forte. Yeah, move him down the bench. So, I I I I don’t think it’s a big deal. What do you guys think? my experiences with him, you know, infrequent interactions. We we talk for a little bit here and there whenever we see each other. I don’t I don’t I don’t get the whole, you know, he’s a he’s he’s a distraction or or this is a negative thing. But anyway, that’s Stephan Bond’s article in the post. Looks like Rick will be moved down the bench to more of an assistant role. TM says, “When parents get involved, it doesn’t end up working out well in the long term, but as long as JB is happy.” Hey, I I thought I thought they handled the Dallas situation very well. Clearly Cuban and them weren’t valuing him. Get him up out of there. Bring him to New York. He’s a starter team. He runs the city. I do the same thing. You know, and again with Leon being the Godfather and running things, I don’t think it’s a it’s a same scenario as well, we have a parent who could be a conflict in terms of the way the organization wants to run things because they’re all on the same team. He’s the godfather. So, this is not like a situation with like a rogue parent that you got to be, you know, on the lookout for. I I don’t I don’t look at it that way. But that’s just me. That’s just my opinion. I’m just one man. You guys let me know your opinion. This is your show. So, that’s the situation with Rick Brunson and the coaching staff and who is going to fill out the rest of the rotation, the rest of the staff. Uh, someone had a comment here. Nicholas Braxton. My choice for lead assistants would be Jerry Stackhouse, Mike Benhoer, Dave Bliss, Adrien Griffin. Okay. Okay. Like I said, you know, Stackhouse and Terry Sts are with the Warriors. Is Steve Kerr or Steve Kerr throw Mike Brown a little alley there, a little assist? We’ll see. But like I said, a lot of people give Jordy Fernandez the credit for that Kings offensive system in Sacramento. So, does Mike Brown need it needed offensive assistant here? Is M is Brian Shaw available? Good question. Where’s Brian Shaw at these days? And you know, you have these guys who were once hot commodities, hot candidates. Brian Shaw was one of them, right? Brian Shaw, Jerry Stackhouse, now Sam Cassell. Can’t even get an interview nowhere. He was a hot candidate. This is a funny business, boy. Very funny. Joseph Vanmar, I see you. Dquin says, “Big perk for the assistant.” Big perk say anything or did I miss anything? Okay. Frack guy says, “I liked Arman Hammer.” Adrien Griffin would be nice. Okay. All right. Let’s see where they go here. So, you know th those are the assistants or potential prospective assistants that we’re talking about. Someone said, “Bring in Mike Woodson.” Mike Woodson would put the ball in Jaylen’s hand and say, “Get out the way.” That’s his system. Now, those are about the the coaches who could potentially be assistant coaches. How about the coach that was not interviewed once again? And he goes by the name of Mark Jackson. So, now this was Mark Jackson yesterday on his I don’t know if this is a IG live, this is a Twitter, this is a video. This was Mark Jackson yesterday. Looks like he’s he’s out wherever he is by his hood walking around, but he had a message. Let’s listen to the message and uh and let’s talk about it. Here we go. To whom it may concern, blessings. You’re more than qualified. Your resume says you’re more than qualified. Your body of work says you’re more than qualified. So, it’s easy to get depressed. It’s easy to get discouraged. It’s easy to get down. And it’s easy to have doubt and start questioning. I don’t know who I’m talking to. You done prayed about it, asked about it, and it didn’t happen. Well, it didn’t happen for a reason. The worst place to be in this world is outside the will of God. Don’t miss your shout. What’s yours is yours. Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. That’s enough to run on. I got to go. Blessings. All right. So that that was Mark. Was that a shot at the Knicks? Was that a shot to say, “Hey, I was available. You guys didn’t talk to me.” Is it a shot at, you know, the frustrations at the NBA for not giving him a shot again since the Golden State stint? He did interview, I believe, for the Cleveland job. Um, and maybe was he a candidate for the Knicks job prior to Tibs? I don’t know if they actually met with him. They might have. They might have for the job. I think they did. I’m I’m just doing some quick research. I I want to say they did interview him when when when they gave Tibs the job. But anyway, what do you think, man? You know, clearly clearly Mark is frustrated. This is his hometown team. A lot of you guys are Jackson Hive members who wanted to see Mark get the job or or get an interview and it just hasn’t happened. You know, I’ve I’ve always I think a lot of people have a common belief, myself included, that he has been uh black bowled from the NBA for whatever reason. So, everybody has their theories. But it it just seems like the ship has sailed for him, man. Unfortunately, you know, whenever I see Mark, you sometimes I see him, you know, summer league, I’ll see him in different places. Saw him at the point guards premiere a couple years ago. Great. you know, always always gives us time, always shows love to us. Very nice guy. So, I don’t know. I’m not sure what it is, but the the political landscape of the NBA can be unforgiving. You know, you don’t you don’t get a lot of guys. Some guys got nine lives like Doc Rivers. Some guys got one. So yeah, you know, he did have guys vouch for him. Rick Patino vouched for him. Patino said he wanted to see Mark get the job or get the interview, but he didn’t get it. Let me ask uh let me ask Grock. Did Mark Jackson Did he ever interview with the Knicks? What do you What do you guys think in the chat? Did he ever interview with the Knicks? I don’t remember if he was on that candidate list when they were when they were uh looking to hire Tibs. Anybody in the chat know? Yeah, he’s never in the Legends Lounge. Hot Dorito. Source close to the situation told me on Monday that Jackson has reached out to uh former oh has reached out to former Golden State head coach Mark Jackson discussed the head coaching position. In what was termed a generic initial discussion, Nick’s president is exploring several options and plans to interview more candidates for the position. Phil reportedly considered Mark Jackson when New York hired Derek Fiser. So this was 2016. Yeah. Shane Mack, I remember his name mentioned. Yeah, likewise. I I think his name I think his name was mentioned. Um, Church Saint says he never got an interview. Ty Clemens says, “I don’t recall that. I thought his name was just thrown in a hat.” Maybe he was just thrown in a hat. But yeah, you know, bottom line. This is another one. Hoops rumors. Yeah. 2018. This is another one. 2018. Chris Haynes of ESPN tweets. Do they have the tweet? Is the tweet still good? Here we go. Mark Jackson will interview for the Knicks head coaching job on Wednesday. This was the Tibs. This was the Tibs run. He He was interviewed. And I also believe he interviewed for the Cleveland job once upon a time. I think maybe the second LeBron tour. I don’t I don’t remember off the top of my head. And maybe a Kings job. I don’t remember. But anyway, he’s had a couple of interviews since he left Golden State, since he was fired from Golden State. But yeah, nothing too serious. So that’s that, man. Jackson Hive, what do you guys think, man? Would love to hear from the Jackson Hive their thoughts on Mark on his comments.
