MASSIVE Sixers Free Agency Update… Report Reveals MAJOR Details
The NBA offseason continues on and the biggest story surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers is Quinton Grimes has yet to agree to a contract extension with this Sixers team. The trade addition at the deadline did come over and remains a restricted free agent with the market seemingly drying up around the league. So, what is the holdup for Grimes and the Sixers reaching a long-term agreement? Well, we have a couple news to get into in this video as far as what is the mentality from the Sixers organization and why they are in this situation in the first place. So to dive right into things, I’d want to start with how we got here, and that is of course Quinton Grimes himself asking for 25 million per season. This coming from Tony Jones of the Athletic, who’s been all over this story in the no on the grime situation. Now, I do not fault Quinton Grimes for wanting to maximize his earnings on the best season that he’s had of his career to his point, but it’s also very difficult to quantify what he is worth based on these unique circumstances that he’s gone through. Let’s not forget that this was a trade deadline acquisition. a guy who played the second half of the season for a lifeless Sixers team and looked like the best player on a very bad basketball team. Now, this is not to say that I do not believe in Quinton Grimes, but that is to say that I don’t think Quinton Grimes is quite a 25 million per year caliber of player. Now, to highlight what his stats show across the board, this coming for the entirety of the season that he averaged 14.6 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assist shots, 46.7% from the field, 38.5% from beyond the three-point arc there. He’s got a little bit of sauce to him defensively. he will compete on this end of the floor. He’s a player that I like and I think the organization does too. And I do think all signs are certainly pointing to him coming back. So, what is the holdup here? Well, to dive into that exactly, it is the restricted free agent market. And I did want to pull up this tweet here. And this shout out to Matt who tweets with no teams having cap space, it’s got to be brutal for the restricted free agents left with the top of that list being Jonathan Kuminga, Quinton Grimes, Josh Giddy, Cam Thomas. And he says no team can really give them the contracts that they want. Therefore, their current teams have leverage. And to simply break down what the restricted free agent market means here is any team can make an offer for Quinton Grimes currently that he is a free agent out here. But the difference between unrestricted and restricted is the Sixers have a chance to match. So in this specific situation, sort of how it’s designed from the league is they allow players to set their market. That Quinton Grimes, if you believe you’re a $25 million man by NBA standards here, then have a team offer you that contract. Now, the reason that teams have sort of backed off doing this is because nine times out of 10 teams are just going to match that this is something that obviously teams like you’re not going to lure a guy when a when a team has a chance to match. It’s more of a you go set your market and then we’ll pay you that than anything where these teams showing interest very rarely walk away with a player here. But when you do that, that cap space is tied up for 48 hours that you submit that offer sheet. The team has 48 hours to reply. they can sit on it till the very last minute and to run back a situation that happened here in Philadelphia. Basically, that exact situation played out with Paul Reed, the the Utah Jazz who are in a position to do this as well following a couple of trades that they did made to shed some salary. I don’t think they’re going to be in the Quinton Grimes business, but I do think that they could try and push Daryl my talk about that in a separate video, but to keep the train on the tracks for this one that the Sixers then sat on that offer sheet until the final minute before it was announced that Daryl my did match here. Now, to bring this back to Quinton Grimes, it is strange that there has been no motion whatsoever. And when looking around the rest of the NBA, the rest of the salary cap has dried up. That this is a brutal year to be a free agent. There is not money pouring out. The CBA is pulling in effects more so than ever. We’re seeing teams make financially motivated decisions in a way that has never happened at this rate here. And Grimes is the guy sort of holding the short end of the stick. Now, one conversation that did pop to my mind or an idea that did plant and to pull back up this tweet by Matt was Jonathan Kaminga right at the top of this list. Now, I’m not a guy who’s the biggest Jonathan Kaminga fans by fan by any means, but I don’t think the Golden State Warriors are either. And I think that’s been pretty clear by some of the quotes that have popped out and the decision-making processes on the floor by Jonathan Kaminga and Steve Kerr directly here for how much opportunity does get that he does give him. Now, the question that popped to my mind was, could there be something of a sign and trade being worked here? And again, I’m not the biggest Jonathan Kaminga guy, but I do think this is a situation where the Warriors don’t feel like he’s their dude, but they do feel like they cannot allow him to walk in free agency and without getting anything in return. If Quinn Grimes is a player that could appeal to him, could this be something that makes sense for both sides? And when comparing to this to the Sixers situation, we know we have a lot of guards. That DJ Edgecom is this dude who by the way is set to miss another summer league game due to that thumb injury, which I’ll talk about again in a minute here. Maybe we’re ready to toss the baton. That maybe a trio of VJ Edgecomb, Jared McCain, and Tyrese Maxi is enough and Kaminga could be more beneficial to this Sixers basketball team. But it does not seem to be that this type of situation is holding any weight. is we got this report also coming from our guy Tony Jones here who says the Sixers have quote splashed cold water in potential sign in uh signing trade uh involving restricted free agent Quinton Grimes and the team remains quote almost certain that they will retain the 25-year-old. So obviously there is a belief by Daryl my way he said that as so as I did want to highlight this quote coming at his end of season presser that Daryl my said quote I did want to mention Quinton Grimes I think he was a real bright spot we’re excited for him to come back we’ve positioned ourselves to bring him back quote Daryl my will note in this press conference specifically that this was information offered by Daryl my was not a question that he was replying to he wanted to make it note and make it clear that Quinton Grimes is wanted and back in Philadelphia and that should be the case here this is not chasing Quinton Grimes out of town by any mean. And I do believe that theoretically if he’s returned to this roster, he should be the day one starter at Shooting Guard. That that’s sort of my expectation for this Sixers team. And to compare this roster as a whole, I did want to pull up these side by side for this year and last year. And for all this change and we’re going to get younger, we’re going to get more athletic. As Daryl my stood at the podium and said, 11 of 14 players to make the Sixers opening opening night roster last year will be back this season. That of course being Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxi, Kelly Ubé Jr., Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Kyle Larry, Jared McCain, Ricky Council the fourth and a Demona. And then looking at the changes that no more Kayla Martin, no more KJ Martin, no more Ganabuselli, and no more Reggie Jackson. But who will be coming in assum assuming that Grimes is a part of it? It will be VJ Edgecomb, Justin Edwards, who let’s note was on a two-way contract last year, so did not have a standard deal. Trendan Watford who I do think is a solid addition and people are going to be excited about. Janai Broom, not quite as high on, but I understand taking the chance on him. And then Quinton Grimes right there. When looking at this roster as a whole, the versatility is a good thing, but I do think Grimes is that dude that that’s going to be the guy that you’re asking to be the starting shooting guard. And I do think there should not be a rush on Edgecom. I think this guy is approaching things the right way, that he’s not going to be bothered by not starting from day one. And to highlight exactly what we’re dealing, it is time to turn the Spidey senses up a little bit. What exactly is going on with VJ Edgecom? We did get this update shortly before I popped on to record here saying Philadelphia 76ers rookie and number three pick in this year’s draft. VJ Edgecom has been diagnosed with a left thumb sprain and is out for Thursday’s summer league in Las Vegas. The team announced and big bummer all around because I will note this was supposed to be the battle with Dylan Harper. Obviously the second overall pick. So second verse third overall pick. Dylan Harper also said that the match missed the matchup due to a groin issue there. So never mind the fact that you have me staying up till 10 p.m. on a Thursday to watch summer league basketball. But now I got to do so without watching either of the top two of the top three picks in this draft here. So don’t love that. But the bigger story here is VJ Edgecom and the status of his thumb. Now the reason that I say these Spidey senses have started to go off a little bit is first this was a thumb contusion, then this is a thumb sprain and now this is three consecutive games that he’s missed. Now I will preface this by saying if VJ Edgecom is 1% hurt, I fully support this dude sitting out. But there is no reason to push him in summer league. We watched him drop 28-10 and look like the clear-cut best basketball player on the floor. That was shared with legitimate rotational NBA players. That happened out there in Salt Lake City. So, I’m not panicking about this right now. And as long as he’s fine by the real season, we are totally cool with it. But boy is something true about that Sixers purse and that Sixers stench just lingering over this organization here. It would be very maddening if there’s anything to happen with VJ Edgecom. But we will push those to the side from now and bring this back to Quinton Grimes. I do think this brings it more important that you do have to bring Grimes back. And this is both from the belief in the player directly here that I do think he can play a legitimate role on this Sixers team and I think we should be pretty thrilled by what we saw from him in the second half of the season. On the other hand, when looking forward, I’m not in any disagreement with you that will you guys that will point out in the comments that you can’t have this many guards. But I do think the best pathway here is just add as many good players as possible and figure out the fit later. That there is a real world where you sign Quinton Grimes and the best usage is to trade him at the deadline for a player that fits better. But guess what? That opportunity does not present itself if you do not resign him right now. that getting good talented players and figuring out the fit later is the direction this team has to go. Especially when you bring on the uncertainty of Joel Embiid and who knows how many games he plays next year or what level he looks like when he’s on the floor that the more optionality and versatility that you can bring to this organization should be viewed as a good thing. So while there has not been a clear-cut I guess conclusion to this Quinton Grimes outlook here, I do think things are swinging in the Sixers favor. And the last point that I did want to note with this is don’t rule out Quinton Grimes betting on himself this year. And what do I mean by that exactly is he does have a chance to take the qualifying offer, take a little over $8 million and then he’ll be an unrestricted free agent next year. This would not be the best case scenario for the Sixers as an organization, but I do think for Grimes specifically that is something that could appeal to him. There’s going to be more cap space across the league next year. And this is a guy who’s already wellraveled. He’s on his fourth NBA team to this point. He has not settled into a long-term home. And while ideally I think for both sides is Philadelphia, we still got to see that play out for itself. So I do wonder if he would be a bit more willing to bet on himself because of this for the Sixers specifically. If you can get him to maybe a $12 million type of annual deal, that’s something that I feel makes sense for a lot of sides. But the leverage has certainly shifted in favor of the Sixers with no real options for contracts out there except for teams directly trying to make life harder on the Sixers. I’m still not putting that past Danny Age in and the Utah Jazz, but for the this point in time, things are trending in the Sixers way that they do have the right full control here. There’s no team that can out bid them or jump and or offer something to a level that they cannot match. Any offer that could theoretically come in for Quinton Grimes, they can match 100% there without really doing any too much damage from a salary cap perspective. That is the beauty of the bird years that they do have. That is the beauty of the restricted free agency that he’s in that pathway there. So, we’ll see how things play out to this point, but hopefully VJ Edgecom is okay. I do hope that I’m not up here with my tinfoil hat and trying to really figure out what is going on. Hopefully, he we at least get a look at him in Las Vegas summer league, but we’ll see what happens from there. And hopefully, we get the news that Quinton Grimes is officially signed sometime in the short term future. But, let me know what you guys think about all that. Your outlook on the Grimes situation. Is this getting old to you? Are you sick of it dragging on? Is this the biggest story that we kind of still have, so we should enjoy it for the time being? We’ll see. Ultimately, I do hope we that we get to see VJ come on the floor and that becomes a bit more of the story. But nonetheless, gonna continue tapping you guys in on every part of the Sixers team. So, let me know what you guys think in the comments. As always, appreciate you guys for tuning in. Make sure you’re smashing that subscribe button if you have not already. 4 years, start 15, 2nd year 16, 3 year 17, 4th year 18. That should be accepted bij grimes!?
Trade grimes for kuminga
Oubre and Drummond plus draft capital for PJ Washington. A starting line up of Maxey, Grimes, PG, PJ, and Joel is a great starting 5!
Id take Giddey. That fixes our missing PG
76ers odds are now 4th in East…. theyre going to finals!!!!
Sixers couldn't sign and trade Grimes for Kuminga. If they did they would be hard-capped at the first apron. You know how I know? God(ner) told me.
Grimes had only one good stretch on a tanking team. He’s not a starter
25 m is peanuts compared to what we gave PG
Sixer have 3 guards already better than him
Bro you always bring that shit nothing flashy no gimmicks preciate you salute ..
This why the Knicks snd Mavs traded this fool,he done lost his mimd 😂😂😂
If he was going to take 12m it would have been done long ago. It's either gonna be 8 mil or 20m
Thank God it's not a shoulder injury
I see youve come around to my 12 Million prediction
$12 to $15 a year ❤❤
