The Knicks just hired Mike Brown as the team’s new head coach, and this is a good example of what they’re getting out of him. It was only two years ago that Mike Brown was named coach of the year for the Sacramento Kings, and it’s because of plays like these. You got the Suns running the pick and roll. And the way the Kings want to defend this is they want to send help from the weak side corner and slide over to stop the roll man. And Terrence Davis, who’s number three on the Kings, doesn’t seem to know the assignment because on this play, he’s sitting below the semicircle. So when Aiden catches this pass, there’s no rotation and the Suns score easily. So Mike Brown calls an immediate timeout. And in that timeout, he goes straight to Terrence Davis and not only explains to him what he’s supposed to do, he walks all the way onto the court and shows his player physically exactly where he needs to be. In this clip, it seems like he’s telling him that he needs to step up higher and out of the semicircle on the rotation. And a couple plays later, watch what happens here. The Suns try running the pick and roll again. And if you slow down the clip, you can see Davis’s time immediately abandon the corner to rotate to where he needs to be. And this time when a rolls, Davis is there to step up and draw a charge. an easy fix to a mistake he made before. But that’s not even my favorite part of the play because sure, the instructions he gave might have helped the Kings get a stop, but it’s how Mike Brown reacted to his player success that spoke to who he is as a person. So yeah, I think the Knicks might have gotten a good one.
