D’Angelo Russell’s GAMBLE on Himself with the Mavs | D’Lo’s Hyped for Cooper Flagg
One more thing. D’Angelo Russell had an incredible cameo in his documentary, but he also showed us something about what he wants. He wants to be with the Dallas Mavericks and wanted it for a couple weeks. We’ll talk about what that means and more in today’s match. One more thing. I’m here because uh I have Dallas is going to get a seat at the table. It’s me versus the machine. Nice penetrating bust to the middle. People forget about hot man. The hot player. Wait, wait, one more thing. Fire up and welcome. You’re locked on to the Dallas Mavericks. My name is Nick Angstair, media member, NBA channel manager, the locked on podcast network, your team every day. This episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use the code locked on NBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. Today’s episode, I want to talk about Dangel Russell’s documentary a little bit because first of all, it’s a great cameo in it. But then also I want to talk about how D’Angelo Russell talked about Dallas in that video and some of the things we learned about him in that video. And so let’s start with that. So the video opens, you can see it’s on Dandel Russell’s YouTube channel and all that. It’s pretty well produced and it starts with him with a conversation between him and Nico Harrison where Nico Harrison says like they’re officially signing him and that they want him to join the Mavericks and that they want him to be on the team. And Danger also says this, “I like me with a chip on my shoulder.” And Nico said, “It’s about to be a problem.” Which to me felt like he was really trying hard to like connect with D’Angelo Russell on on his vernacular, like on his level. But D’Angel Russ saying, “I like me with a chip on my shoulder.” That’s the mentality he’s coming into with this with this Dallas Mavericks team. He mentioned a couple times throughout this video where he knew the cameras were on him and all that and like he’s kind of a ham where like he he plays it up for the cameras and he has fun with it and it’s pretty awesome. You you love watching him. But he said, “I’m betting on myself a couple times in this video.” And that’s what he’s doing. He’s not looking at this as all right, boom, I’m I’m in. He’s looking at this as he’s betting him on himself. This is an opportunity for him to show more to the NBA. He looked at the landscape of the league and saw that he wasn’t going to get the money that he thought he should get. Like he’s been getting paid his whole career basically, and was like, “All right, I’ll take way less money than I think I’m worth to go play with this team who he’s really excited to play with. That’s going to be very clear in all this. He’s gonna be that he’s very excited to play with this Mavericks team, but that he’s betting on getting a bigger opportunity and getting more money somewhere else. He signed this massive deal with the Timberwolves uh where he was making 27 million, 28 million, 30 million, 31 million. Then for the Lakers, he made 17 million. Then last year he made about 19 million. And now he’s going down to like 56 million. And that’s a bit that’s a big drop off for somebody in the NBA. And that is a big hit to the ego a little bit. You go going from $31 million to $6 million over two seasons. And so he really does look at this as an opportunity to bet on himself. I like me with a chip on his shoulder is what he said. I think I’m I think I may be a drop. And then I think that for with D’Angelo Russell, it’s something you got to watch out for because he’s kind of in a contract year. He’s got this player option, so he can opt out of it. We’ll see. We’ll see what happens next season with him. But the Mavs, you do have to sign players for two years when you do that tax mid-level exception. That’s what Daniel Russ got signed to. And so this this is a year for him to prove it. You’ve got to watch out with some of these contract guys because they’ve got their own interest maybe ahead of the teams. I don’t think that’s going to be the case with the Angel Russell that much. And I think what what is what is good for him is also going to be good for the Mavericks because the video also opens like part of the open was a radio show. I didn’t rec I didn’t recognize it. Probably should have. But it opens in the show and they’re like, “Yeah, the defense is going to be great for the Dallas Mavericks. You know that you’ve got Cooper Flag, you got Anthony Davis, you got Derrick Lively. the offense is going to be suspect and it’s then it’s just this highlight reel of Daniel Russell hitting all these shots and all these runners and all the these different things. It was pretty great and the contrast of it is like he’s going to bring what the Mavericks need. They need somebody to go out there and get a bucket. They need somebody to uh to hit shots to be able to play with Anthony Davis really well to be able to play that pick and roll game. Uh he went he part of it was he was at Fanatics Fest. You know that do you see that festival where Kevin Durant was on stage when he got traded? Um he was at Fanatics Fest. He was part of that and he got interviewed by that guy that like asks players who who were the top five players you’ve assisted to the most in your career. And Anthony Davis is number two. Die Russell has had a ton of assists to Anthony Davis. And that’s something that I’m really high on for him is they do need somebody to go get a bucket. They do need somebody to play um you know to play offense and to play pick and roll game with Anthony Davis. And I think this video showed that he knows what he’s getting himself into. He’s betting on himself. His skill set is what the Mavericks need and he’s coming in and he’s going to do it. And so I think that’s that’s something that the like the real takeaway I took away from this documentary is that’s the mentality he’s going in with. And I think that’s great. I have a lot of other things I want to say about this about this video and this documentary though. Um he had an incredible cameo at about the nine minute mark. You hear Isaac from Blocked Down Mavericks come on and say this is this is one more thing with with I’m gonna tell you why D’Angel Russell should be signed by the Dallas Mavericks. And then it’s Isaac talking about D’Angel Russell 63 jump shot blah blah blah scorer all that from Louisville and Isaac kind of gassed up D’Angelo Russell and his his Camp DLO which he does in Louisville every year and then Isaac does his thing where he says that Louisville should be an NBA city and he he promotes that and all that kind of stuff. And Isaac was on D’Angel Russell’s uh D’Angelo Russell’s documentary which is awesome. This is the second time Isaac has been on some on somebody’s um been on somebody’s documentary. He was on Anthony Black’s documentary as well when he was coming into the draft. And so, uh I don’t know what what what it is about Isaac. He just gets the he gets the quotes and he gets the sound bites and players really are drawn to that. Awesome. So, if you want to go listen to that, it’s like at the 9minute mark and then again at like the 950 mark. uh he split it up into two different parts, but it’s pretty cool because he’s he’s there like throwing out the first pitch for a Louisville Bats game, which the Louisville Bats is like the one of the triple AAA. I think it’s a triple AAA team for the Reds. And he’s throwing out the first pitch, which he said, “The last time I was in this I was in this stadium. I was in like fifth grade on a school trip and he’s throwing out the first pitch. It’s like kind of amazing.” It is amazing watching these videos, seeing all the stuff that these guys do. Everywhere they go is they’re like, you know, a star. And it’s D’Angel Russell. He’s been what, a one-time all-star. It’s not like he’s LeBron or, you know, Anthony Davis or even like or even Cooper Flag with a hype that is around him now. It’s wild to watch these guys just walk around life because that’s what a lot of this video is is him just going to everyday things in his life. Coming up, he put something in his video I was actually surprised by. It’s about Cooper flag and I’m excited to tell you what it is coming up. Today’s lockdown maps. I literally went through the entire roster and told you something about every single one of these guys. So listen to that show if you haven’t. subscribe, audio video, all that stuff. Talking about Daniel Russell’s documentary video. Isaac made a cameo. It was awesome. They didn’t ask us, by the way. They just put it in there, which you know, fine. So, you guys have had prize picks in your as one of your advertisers. They’re one of our advertisers. So, maybe throw some of that throw some of that our way. D’Angel Russell. No, but I we will probably try to leverage this to get him on to get him on to get him on the show. Dangel Russell. So, I have a lot more things to say about this. I want to talk about Cooper Flag in it. He’s playing this video and this video is about his journey from the end of his last season to signing with the Mavericks and betting on himself. That’s like sort of the theme of it. In the middle of this video, they play the Cooper Flag gets drafted by the Dallas Mavericks clip. Like they just play it where Cooper Flag gets drafted. You see Adam Silver, you see a Cooper Flag and his family at the table. you see Crewfly go over and take the hat, put it on and walk up to the to the podium and like it seemed totally out of place to me in this video just from a narrative perspective except for the fact that it is about the hype of it and how hyped D’Angel Russell was to is to play with Cooper Flag and how players are hyped to play with Cooper Flag. It’s a big deal that like this player D’Angelo Russell who’s been in the league a long time. He’s been in the league 10 years. He’s 29 years old. That he is excited to play with Cooper Flag and that he would even go so far as to put it in the video as like part of the reason why he’s hyped to play with the with the Dallas Mavericks to play with this 18-year-old guy. I bring it up because I think the hype that other players show to a player says a lot about how good the player is. You saw guys you you saw players hyping up Devin Booker. Deon Booker was like a 13th the 13th pick in the draft, but other players were hyping him up and eventually he became an allNBA player and the player that is about to make 150 million over two years. Wild. You see guys hyping these these guys up and they know if these guys are going to be good or not. Now, of course, there’s examples of players hyping guys up and it doesn’t work out, but but a lot of time players know if if you can hoop or if you can not hoop. And so him hyping up Cooper flag I thought was massive and I thought was very interesting in it. And then he said there’s this video of him saying everybody trying to chase that flag. Everybody trying to chase that flag. Like he was so excited. He was so excited about Cooper flag and so excited to play with him. Talking about a guy that’s 11 years like a decade younger than him. I just found that awesome. That’s just that’s awesome that he’s that excited about it. Okay, here’s some random stuff about this. In the conversation with Nico Harrison, he finishes it. He finishes it, hangs up the phone, and he goes, “I still have his number saved as Nico Nike.” Like the last time he talked to Nico, he was a he was a Nike executive and he was like, I still have him in his phone. It’s Nico Nike, which I think is Nike. Nico is like such a funny name. Uh he also goes to Ohio State for a practice and you see him hyping up those guys and talking about the intensity of an NBA practice compared to a college practice and having them raise their game for it which was awesome. That was really cool to see there. Practice was a big theme in this as well where he talks about practice is my word. He was at that Fanatics fanatics fest thing and they asked him like what drives him kind of deal and he’s like practice practice is my word and he named a bunch of things practice at kids with my partner at basketball you know business like everything that he mentioned practice is his big thing and so I think that’s going to that’s going to vibe really well with the rest of this Mavericks team a lot of them are like that I have some really bad news though about Daniel Russell at the Fanatics thing he spends like I don’t know like 30 seconds to a minute hyping how inspired he is by Dwayne Wade, which just made me like really sad. I guess you give him a pass, right? But it’s like, dang, Mav fans hate Dwayne Wade so much. So, Dandel Russell, if you’re listening to this, maybe tone down the Dwayne Wade love while you’re with Dallas. Maybe let’s not like wax poetic about Dwayne Wade while you’re with Dallas. He went golfing with Devin Booker, who I mentioned. I mentioned Deon Booker earlier, but he was golfing with him. That was part of it. Um, he also, I forgot to mention this at the beginning, a couple weeks before he actually signed, they did like a flashback and it was a couple weeks before he signed with the Mavericks. They were like, “All right, where do you want to go?” And he goes, “Dallas. I’m just betting on myself. Dallas is where I want to be.” Which was pretty awesome. He also got FaceTimes from Max Christie and Anthony Davis, who obviously played with him with the Lakers after he signed and after that they announced that and they were super happy. And Daniel Russell asked Max Chris. He’s like, “Where should I be living when I move when I move out there?” Which I found funny because you never think about these guys like, “All right, Daniel Russell signs with the Mavericks.” All right, he’s been living in Brooklyn or LA maybe. And now he’s going to move to Dallas and like figure out what neighborhoods are cool. Like what if he what if he comes here and he moves Oh my god, I’m going to put a neighborhood on blast. But what if he like moves to Frisco and he’s like I didn’t realize it was like 40 minutes down the road to downtown Dallas. You know what I mean? Or if he moves to Deep Ellum and then he’s like, “The hell’s happening here on weekends.” Oh man. Or he moves to Oakan where I live and he’s like confused in other ways. But he got FaceTimes from Max Christie and Anthony Davis. He also a couple times like said, “Get that camera out of my face.” A couple times. And it made me just sit there and go, “You hired this documentary guy. You pay him probably. And he’s They posted the video on your YouTube channel. Like this is all like, get the camera out of my face. You paid for this, man. Great stuff. Great stuff. I loved love the video. Fully enjoyed it. Go watch it on DA Russell’s YouTube channel. But to me, I think the takeaways are he’s got a chip on his shoulder and he’s really hyped to play with Cooper Flag, which is just more proof of Cooper Flag and the impact he’s about to make on the Dallas Mavericks because he it’s it’s that big. So, super excited about that. Super excited uh and excited for Isaac and his cameo and another another NBA players documentary. How many can we get? Can we just Maybe I should start submitting quotes that Isaac has to other NBA players. Thanks for hanging out with us here on Lockdown Abs. It’s one more thing. We’ll have shows all throughout the week. Uh, Cooper Flags First Game is probably the next show you’re going to listen to from us. Very excited about that. Thanks so much for listening to Locked on Mavs. Peace out.

I haven’t been this pumped for Mavs basketball since “beat the heat” in 2011 ngl
I 1000% believe D Lo is gonna ball out this year
So what were saying is if Dlo go crazy he won't be here next yr on are actual full season with kyrie only if he does bad he stays
The preacher is naturally preaching
Nico knows what he's doing this what it shows. Let the man cook
Culture. Let Nico cook
This team needs a giant bottle of Viagra to get through a full season we will see FIRE NICO AND BRING BACK OUR GUY
Do the Mavs still need 1 more guard? I only say that cause Exum has been injured a lot?
Nico with the connections.😎
People are gung ho on him moving to the 6th man when Kai get bac, which can be lit, but can yall imagine them Kai, dlo lineups?! Who’s guarding who? And then 3 other lob threats are always in the floor if Klay is on the bench. Or put Flagg as the ball handler and let dlo and Kai sit on the wing as spot up shooter 😱🤯. We are crazy deep. kidd is gonna have a lot of room “outside the box” to play with. I’m excited to see him work this year. Sb: I knew the mavs were gonna be really good when all the forced coach leaving talks started happening on the big networks. It was like they were looking for any drama about the mavs to talk about, while totally ignoring anything they’ve done all offseason. Expect Another “dark horse season” to make the playoffs, but the first without Luka and I believe this will be the most shoccing of them all. Dlo is the best Kai clone on the market to hold the fort down, and I truly expect flag to play a significant role despite his age. And even if he doesn’t, we have pj and naji to step up…. They wanted us to trade gaff or pj so bad to get a guard, but we filled that need without losing anything, just like I wanted. I feel like the big networks were just scared of what we had 😅. The only thing beating us is injury. This team healthy is washing okc. Yall remember what we did to them without Luka AND we had injuries?
Bro Dlo is actually jacked lol. He is underrated imo, the doc he did was super cool. Dlo seems chill Im glad he is here.
Need to add D'Los "I'm trying to be in Dallas" drop to the intro or soundboard in general.
He's actually signed to D-Wade's shoe brand, Way of Wade, and has a sig shoe with them. They have a close relationship.
D’Lo saved our season two years in a row. The lakers don’t get to the playoffs the last two years without D’Lo. He was unfairly scapegoated for Rob Pelinka’s terrible roster construction and talent allocation. This is the perfect roster to optimize his abilities while minimizing his weaknesses. I’m rooting for him.
This is my opinion when players come to Dallas, and I've been watching for years, they excel. Dlow, not saying that Lakers is not a grand organization because they are, in Dallas it's almost as if he's a rookie because we showcase our talent and this is going to give him an opportunity to show the world exactly what he really can do So I'm actually happy for him.
Colby or sexson better selection
DLo is what he is.
My fear after last season is he’s actually 1/2 of what he once was.
DLo is Dwyane Wade’s first athlete with his shoe brand lmao
I’m guessing he will move to the Preston Hollow area. That’s where all the sports athletes seem to move to. Though white rock life area and Oakcliff are much cooler.
Gamble on a guaranteed bench in the playoffs fire nico
After watching that DLO vlog instantly became a fan of him like he’s a rookie coming in with Flagg. Can’t wait season need to start yesterday
"I like me with a chip on my shoulder"…lmfao, I'm all for players gettin their money outside the game & growing their brand, but CRINGE….
I liked DLo on my fantasy team at his value, but I can't with the corny, self promoting inspo lines on his own youtube channel 🤣… That didn't work out well for Russell Wilson & he's actually got the hardware to back it up.
only thing to not like about dlo is when he snitched on swaggy p to iggy
12:36 he has a signature shoe with D Wades brand
OMG he is only getting 6m. what will he do? be homeless! poor guy!
Dlo has never had a fantasy embrace him like we will
