The Thunder’s big 3 GETS PAID π° Bobby Marks breaks down OKC extending SGA, Holmgren & J-Dub π
All right, a happy uh Thursday. Hopefully everyone is doing great. Uh we are in the confines of Thomas and Mack Arena. I’m sitting actually on a stairwell because it is challenging to find a quiet place here in the Las Vegas summer league. And I wanted to do a video on uh certainly the extensions in Oklahoma City. There might be pe random people walking down these stairs pretty soon. Um so we’re going to do the best we can with this video just to get it out. Um because I know there are a lot of questions regarding the extensions of Shay Gilbert Alexander, Jaylen Williams, and certainly Chad Holgrren here and how far as how it is going to impact Oklahoma City moving forward. Uh certainly we talk about we live in a world of aprons and now when you see the Thunder commit um you know nearly $800 million in extensions the it automatically brings a red flag as far as what is going to happen next for the roster. And I think it’s important to kind of lay out as far as where we are a little bit about the extensions. When we announce extensions, they are uh projections. They’re projections based on where the salary cap is. I know that the numbers come out um but it’s based on what the projection is is going to be in 2025 26 or certainly with uh with chat I with um Shay um two years from now which would be 202728. Um the most for chat and Jaylen it’s 246. Um 7% that’s based on a 10% projection. Certainly um Jaylen can earn a little bit more because he’s got some escalators in his contract. We’ll wait and see what’s going to happen there. With Sheay it’s 285. It potentially could increase to 293. Um the cap as we have seen it is going to grow uh projected 7%. That’s where we get to 239. It potentially could go to 246 if it is a See, now we have somebody walking up to That’s okay. We’re good. We’re We I I’ve already warned everyone that we’re gonna have people walking. So, um it could go up to 246 if the salary cap increases 10%. Here’s why um it’s important to focus on three players 26 years or or younger under contract through 203031. That is unprecedented when we’re looking at max level type players. um 13 first round picks in the next I had 14 but I added one by mistake. 13 first round picks in the next seven years the sustainability as far as to keep on replenishing with young players. When you look at certainly the revenue stream that is coming into Oklahoma City when you look at a new arena when you look at the new TV contract we potentially have expansion. This is a Thunder team that ranked in the fifth lowest in payroll since 2020 2021. So basically all that savings is now going to go towards where this roster is going to be. Uh will Oklahoma City be in in the second apron next year? Most likely. Um will they be a luxury tax team? Yes. But the apron rules are designed basically to eliminate some of the resources that you have to kind of add from the outside to add to your roster. When you have your core three players under contract along with um Alex Cruso and Kase Wallace and Kendrick Williams and Lou Dord and Hartstein and you have 14 or 15 players under contract, that basically eliminates those what the league is trying to do as far as teams getting fat and going out and make trades here. When you already have a group that’s under contract for the foreseeable future, the apron rules are mitigated here. The apron rules actually help Oklahoma City because it doesn’t allow some of these higher market teams to go from zero to 10 and make these high risk trades or high spending trades um to go out and acquire talent that basically is eliminated here. Um will eventually we see different um reiterations or iterations of where the thunder are in two years from now? I would say probably and I think that’s the nature as far as where things certainly are as far as where we live in a world with changing rosters. I think a good example and I said this on NBA today is the 90s Bulls, right? We saw two different versions of the 90s Bulls. We saw the 90s Bulls with um with Jordan and Pippen who were the constant players. And if you look at Oklahoma City, constant players are Shay Chat and SGA. Um, and then we added the 90s Bulls where it was the second group. When you had Rodman to that group, um, you know, Steve Cerr, you know, we had Harris Grant, we had a lot of different versions as far as where Luke Longley, a lot of different versions as far as Ron Harper. Um, as I said, different and I think that’s what you’re going to see probably two years from now with Oklahoma City. We live in a world right now where it’s like mini windows we call it, right? It’s that two to three year windows as far as how teams are going um going out and and and building rosters. The day and age of having a team for five or six years, it’s really just not sustainable here as far as your core 14 15 players here. Um but what the Thunder have done and they’re and they’re different than Phoenix and some of these other teams who had had older players on these 35% max contracts. They’ve got two on these on 20 as Brian calls it Winhorse the FunMax. Uh and I do think they’re in really good shape. We actually have an article coming out next week on we’re going to talk about the aprons a little bit here and and take a deep dive into some of these teams and uh take a broader lens as far as where they are here. But I did want to do a video and just talk about it. Uh we talked about at NBA today. we talk we’re gonna go on Sports Center in a little bit to talk about it here that um if you’re a Thunder fan and you saw what happened in Boston you’re like oh my god is this going to happen to our group if we lose in the second round next year your core players your main top three players and then and we can also add in you know whether it be Alex Cruso or Casey Wallace or Lou Dor but your core three that just got extensions man for better for for the better part you are stuck with them through 2030 31 which is certainly a good problem to have. It’s a good problem to have too especially when you have three players under 26. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

OKC causing good problems for the nba
Fear the dear? Nahhhhhh thunder all the way next yearβΌοΈ
Anyone who criticize these move the thunder are making better not have criticized them moving harden a decade ago. Because a lot of these comments are basically justifying what presti did by trading harden even though a lot of yall said he was stupid for doing that
okc just say fk it… no way in hell were gonna repeat the kd harden westbrook mistake
I like this stairwell
Are they sure they don't want to trade Williams to Houston for Kevin Martin and keep Serge Ibaka?
Thunder Up! β
A process that Philadelphia failed to doπππππ
Bobby the π
rewarding these players no conflicts with the team moving forward since OKC got tons of draft picks in the coming years, Sam Presti can easily play around!
Lol… its done for okc they aint winning again its like denver they won their ring and then nothing again lol.. okc just got lucky and with the refs side with them thats why they won dont forgot about that lol… tight game 7 and then refs magic happens in free throw lol.. nice game right
Come on ESPN this is how you treat your MVP?
thanks as always, these 'aprons' can be very complicated, Bobby, it's 'long-term capology chess'
Boston 2.0 ?
Chet is an important key player for the thunder, no doubt. But he shouldn't have gotten the same contract as jdub. Even without chet for a good amount regular season, they were still a great team with shai and jdub. I feel like 150 mill-180 mill is fine. Luckily they got like a million picks so they can always get new bench players
Sam Presti has alot of big decision to make 2026-2027.
amazing that we got a 240p video of Bobby Marks on a stairwell in Summer League lol
get this man a raise and an iPhone with better quality imaging please
Second Apron gonna hit OKC like a B
Imagine some of the bigger "stars" on the network doing this. Bobby just being the goat as usual
Nah the stairwell video is crazy grind πππ BOBBY IS HIM
The only guy that got it wright
And still they are people in the comments not getting it
Okc is in a completely different situation than any other team in thw league
With the roaster age( room for improvement ) and draft capital( ways to get cheap replacements for whenever you need to trade someone to avoid the taxes) of tanking teams while fighting for the title
OKC will need to trade Lu dort for 3 3nd round picks or even one 1st and one 2nd as Minnesota traded kat for randle to avoid the consequences of the 2nd apron
But Minnesota was trading their second option and okc will be trading their 5th /6th, at best 4th option…. while getting more picks back to draft his replacement
( Actually his replacement is already in the team in cason Wallace, soh the drafted guy will be the replacement of caso, not dort which will give that player at least 1 year of development while being a bench player without any big responsibilities
I like Bobby Marks. He knows the grind.
Appreciate your work Bobby!
Oh Bobby Marks filming in a stairwell – that is dedication man!
