The Houston Rockets Have Found Their Next SUPERSTAR…

The Houston Rockets have a very unique summer league team. Of course, Reed Shepard is gonna be the star of the show, but they also have Germaine Samuels Jr. who’s been with the team for years now on a two-way. He’s going to play. You’ve got Mississippi State guard Cam Matthews, former second round pick Kennedy Chandler. Moses Brown’s the most experienced player on the team. He’s been a part of six different NBA teams, Portland, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Indiana, and Brooklyn. He also played for the Knicks G-League team this past season. Garrett Jackson, who’s an assistant of Emodoka once again, is going to serve as the team’s head coach. This is one of those typical Rockets teams that has a lot of size on it. 6’11, 66, 67, 68, 67, 67. It’s not very many guards on this team, which is super interesting. Moses Brown 72, by the way. Even the some of the guards are 6’6. The Rockets just continue to be the biggest really lengthiest. I’m trying to say that in a way that doesn’t come across as weird. I was going to say the longest team, but pause. But yeah, Houston, I mean, they’ve got nine guys on their regular season roster that have a wingspan over 7 foot. So, it just goes to show that this team is not messing around. They want to get as many wings as possible. And that’s exactly why Houston was fifth in defensive efficiency last season. And despite losing in the first round of the Warriors, the defense certainly was not why. It was the offense was very very very very very very very very very very bad. The halfcg court offense was literally worse than the Charlotte Hornets in the regular season. Think about that. The Rockets halfcourt offense in those seven games was worse than the Hornets was the 82 games that they played in. That’s how bad they were. And that’s why the team went out there and they got Kevin Durant. I know this isn’t a KD video. Trust me, I can talk all day and all night about Kevin Durant and how much I love the fit of him here, but this is a summer league video. And a lot of these guys, realistically, there’s not a role for them because the Rockets have such a deep team to the point where the only really player that’s going to get an opportunity here is going to be Reed Shepard. I mean, let’s just be completely honest, there is a need for a point guard outside of Fred Van Vleet. Even though Aaron Holiday was brought back, you know, Aaron Holiday is not the type of guy that’s going to play every single night and be the backup to your starting point guard. That’s exactly why Reed Shepard was brought in here because he can shoot the ball and even though last season he didn’t play much and he struggled with his efficiency. The pace of the NBA is so much quicker than college. You can’t expect a rookie to come in and take over the league by storm, especially for a team like the Rockets that had championship aspirations. So Reed Shepard, they’re going to get him more involved. The easiest way to develop a young player is to throw him out there and to give him minutes, especially consistent minutes, and to keep him in the same type of role. Reed Shepard, he’s got to check in the same time every single game and he’s got to check out every single time. There was games where he played a lot of minutes and there’s games where he didn’t play. So, I’m excited to see just the consistency of Reed Shepard and what he’s able to do in those minutes. And he’s such a good shooter, too. We’re talking about a 52% three-point shooter in college and he was about 34% for the Rockets. So, expect that to go up as well. He’s also got good craft. He’s got a good floater. He’s got a decent handle. I think Reed Shepard has a ton of potential. Not saying he’s going to be an all-star, but he does exactly what the Rockets need and that’s shoot the ball and space the floor. And I’m glad that they didn’t give him up in the KD trade because personally, I didn’t think Jaylen Green, Dylan Brooks, and the 10th pick was going to be enough. I thought Reed Shepard would be in there and it wasn’t. And that’s huge on Rafael Stone for getting that done. But in terms of just the overall roster, there’s a lot of guards. I’m going to be completely honest. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 nine. nine guards in terms of centers. One, two, two centers and then forwards you’ve got All right, so nine guards, two centers, and four forwards. So, a lot of guards. And if you think about it, that that does make sense because the Rockets certainly don’t need any more wings. If they did, they sure as hell wouldn’t have traded Cam Whitmore for a couple of second round picks. And then the big men, they bring in Clink Capella. They resigned Steven Adams Alper and Shangun the best player well the previous best player until they got Kevin Durant obviously but Shenun the future of this franchise the keys are in his hands he is a center so the Rockets they’re thinking of let’s see what these young kids have got and maybe one of them or two of them are going to be able to impress them and compete for a roster spot in training camp I’m not saying that none of them have a chance necessarily of course they do summer league does mean something at the same time I remember Josh Hart when he was a rookie averaging what was at like 30 a game. I mean, Josh Hart was scoring 30 like it was nothing in the summer league. And you know, Josh Hart’s a good player. He’s a very good player, but it just goes to show that you can’t take too much away from the summer league. But I do think that it matters. And obviously, you know, a couple of these guys are going to be on the Rockets in the long term. You know, Kevin Durant isn’t going to be here forever and eventually they’re going to have to have somebody that can come in and sort of fill out his role. Maybe that will be Taran. I don’t really know. I mean, again, the Rockets have a lot of wings, so they’re not really stressing about that. But I’m just excited to see these young guys compete, and it it’s just basketball at the end of the day, man. I mean, there’s nothing else to it. It’s basketball. It’s still the Houston Rockets, and we get to see their coaching staff in action. Of course, it’s the closest thing we get to the NBA, and the offseason goes by so fast. I mean, the NBA finals are over with. And then, of course, free agency. Rockets had a big free agency. They brought in Dorian Finny Smith. Of course, they went out there and they made a trade for Kevin Durant. They brought in Clink Capella, and I don’t think they’re done. We talked about Damen Lillard yesterday. We talked about the potential Russell Westbrook, a couple of guys that are still available. Josh Giddy is still available. There’s a ton of very good players still on the market. And I I think the Rockets still have a move or two left in them, but the summer league is tomorrow night. And I’m just looking forward to Reed Shepard. He is going to be on the thumbnail. It was supposed to be a mix of some of these guys, but like let’s face it, Reed Shepard, you want to see what he can do. He was the third overall pick. And I don’t think it’s fair to say that, hey, Reed was a third pick. I expect him to play 30 minutes every single night and and to get touches. I mean, yeah, like, yeah, in an ideal world, in a perfect world, you’d want the third overall pick to be starting and to be contributing, but it’s it’s just a much different NBA, and some of these guys develop at their own pace. And I think it could take Reed a couple of years to truly transform into the player that we want him to be. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. The beauty of that is this isn’t the Wizards. This isn’t the the Hornets, right? It’s not it’s not a bad team that has no sort of hope, at least for the upcoming season. This is the Houston Rockets, the two seen in the West. They’re known for their defense. Yeah, they they struggle in the half court. They don’t shoot the ball that well. they traded their best shooter statistically in Dylan Brooks, but they got Kevin Durant. And something that I didn’t write down on my notes, but I remembered because I was doing some research earlier this morning is that the Suns were a top 10 offensive team in the half court. I know I said I wouldn’t talk about Kevin Durant, but whenever I talk Houston Rockets, I just can’t help myself. Kevin Durant is one of my all-time favorite players. My first actual jersey that I got was Kevin Durant. It was when he was on OKC and they were in the finals taking on the Heat. There’s just something about KD that I’ve always loved and I wanted him at the trade deadline and of course I wanted him to start the offseason. A lot of Rockets fans disagreed which is fine. I never understood why. I think they kind of came around of of Kevin Durant’s significance to this team because you can throw the ball down to him and he’s so efficient. He can also spot up which means he’s not going to take touches away from these younger guys. And defensively he’s still a very good rim protector. Shenun not exactly known for that. Of course, you know, Steven Adams and Capella will help pick that up, but KD helpside can protect the rim. I mean, he’s got what, like a seven, seven wingspan. So, I’m I’m super pumped, super ecstatic, super excited for the Houston Rockets, their summer league team. I mean, I’d be lying if I said that. Like, I’m just oh my god, I can’t wait. Like, I got a reminder sent to my phone. But at the same time, like I I actually am excited for Reese Shepard because I wanted the Rocket to draft him. And man, that boy is cold, bro. Like, the way he shoots the basketball and I think he’s got so much potential. Like Reed Sheper to me is either going to be just like another dude in the NBA or he’s going to be an absolute stud. And I’m betting that he’s going to be a stud, too, cuz he just has too much potential not to. And he’s got the perfect supporting cast around him and he’s got the perfect coach. But Yim Yudoko wasn’t able to get that out of Jaylen Green. But I don’t I think Reed just has way more of a drive than Jaylen Green. I feel like Reed Shepard was just born to play basketball. And he’s about to light up. Reed’s going for 30 tomorrow, bro. Like I’m calling it right now. is going for 30.
