Here are the Drive Guys with Kevin Gleason and Kyle Draper. Where is Kyle Draper? He’s in Las Vegas. He’ll be joining us shortly. He says there was a some kind of snafu with his credentials. I don’t know, Jay. He’s probably at the casino, right? Am I right? you know, I uh I would normally agree with you, but I he actually did pick up the phone and call me and uh explain the situation as I uh I told him, you know, there’s there’s a specific set of people to blame and it’s it’s super easy to do so, but I I won’t do it. But yeah, absolutely. Yeah, those things happen. He’ll be joining us shortly. I got to say, you know, um thrilled that you’re with us. Great to be with Jay. Uh I’m glad Allan Styles is gone. And Alan Styles is my friend. What? Yeah, people say that all the time. You know, he’s my friend. He really is my friend. Okay, I mean that. But he the whole he’s so hyped for summer league. I don’t know if you heard that, Jay. But you know, like if there’s a movie coming out or something, you have that one friend’s like, “Oh, we got to see that movie. It’s going to be the greatest movie ever.” Like, just be quiet. Allan is like a little over the top for summer league today and it was a little annoying, you know? Come on, Allan. It’s summer league. I know he’s excited because he’s going and he’s going to have a good time. But now he’s suggesting, look, this is even more important. I’m more excited about this than I would be for opening night. I actually worry about him a little bit. It was very annoying. So, I’m glad we I’m glad we can continue uh without having to spend a lot of time on how great Summer League is. I’m interested in summer league, but I’m not like, woo, it’s like March Madness in July, you know? Well, check this out, Mr. Gleason. This is his first time attending. Yeah, I get it. Okay. Second part of it is you’re a wy veteran in the game. You’ve you’ve had the opportunity to do Super Bowls and Allstar games and so many opening nights and so on and so for summer leagues and golf tournaments and charity foundations. There’s so many things. I appreciate Allan is still fresh to the game, right? You know, this there’s that newness. Absolutely. He’s got the new car smell. It it’s, you know, you take out a pair of shoes and you look and you smell, oh man, just fresh brand new pair of kicks, right? So that’s how Allan is is operating. And shouts out to Mr. Styles dibbling and dabbling out in Vegas. When’s he go? Today. Tomorrow. Is he? No, I think he’s going. He might not be going till Sunday. Sunday? Yeah. Oh, he’s Saturday. He’s missing all the good stuff. Saturday. Okay. Yeah. The first The first three, four days are is what matters. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Oh. And then it’s like it just dives. Floor falls out, right? Like this is great. was I’m sick of this. Yeah, people because it’s it’s the Vegas thing. It’s how you know and I had the opportunity to cover boxing for a couple years for Sporting News. When you’re in Vegas more more time than you need to be, it becomes a regular city. It becomes a you know, I got to go grocery shopping. Let me go do, you know, it’s the normal the headache, the the habitual things that you have to do. And so it loses that movement. Uh I I’ve always said Vegas tops tops. I mean, absolutely a week. Yeah. Anything past a week in Vegas, good luck. Well, there’s almost that sugar high, an emotional sugar high, right, about going to Vegas. Oh, this is great. And then, you know, you got to pay the price for that on the other side. And that’s what I’m worried about Allan. I mean, when he comes back, he’s coming down. Great to be back here, you know. Well, we doing we all doing a vacation, you know. Maybe that it’s like brand new uh new school year. You’re all pumped for the first couple of days. When we started school, you used to go, you know, what that Tuesday after Labor Day. That first week, you’re getting off your new fits. You’re feeling good. By week two, you’re like homework. Back in school, homework quiz. You got a teacher who don’t have no life. Want to take over, throw quizzes and stuff. What have you done all summer? Teach. Yeah. You throwing pop quizzes. I don’t even know what this class about. Yeah. This curriculum is about. I just remember the first couple days the math was so easy. did your homework. X= 1 X plus 2. A it is going to be my best grades ever, you know, and then like 3 weeks later you’re like, I have no idea. Pythagore learning pie. I should have paid more attention. So, shouts out to Alibaban, you know. But I understand it is difficult when someone else is going on vacation like, “Oh man, I’m going to Hawaii. I’m celebrating. Going to have such a great time.” Like, damn, I want to go to Hawaii, too. Right. Right. Yeah. I’m I’m envious. I’m wondering, seriously, um, you know, if you want to weigh in, that’s fine. I’m not begging you to call or anything, but I’m wondering where Kings fans are in this summer league. Probably pretty much where they always are, you know, which is, yeah, curious to see the new guys, right? Um, some fans will be excited, other people, let’s let’s face it, other people have a lot better things to do. They care that much about Summerly. Very true. Very true. But I’m very intrigued and interested to see especially the two young players. Uh, you know, for Kings, I would say this is the the run-in-the-mill. You’re right. The normal this they’re amplified to a certain extent, but not over the top. I was going to ask you guys this yesterday and you you guys touched on it a little bit. Normally, when summer league is super hype, it’s when you have a Cooper flag, a Bronnie, a Zion, a Wimbeyama. Yeah, you know, uh, LeBron who played in what, the Boston one, if I’m not mistaken. Uh, and so, yeah, I think it was the Boston uh, summer league. But those those type of stars, those type of young guns come along. Is this one of those years? Is does Cooper bring that type of momentum? Do you feel that? And I know we talked about the ticket prices yesterday, but do you feel as if this is like, oh man, everybody is set to go to summer league because of Cooper Flag? I feel like emotionally it should. When I think about it, it should be there. Um I should say intellectually I I feel like it should be there should be that much anticipation, but I just don’t think that there is. I’m not sure why that is, but it’s nothing like, you know, Wimy’s first game. Uh, you know what I mean, Jay? I think there should be more anticipation, but it seems like fans are not over the moon for a Cooper flag like they’ve been for some of the bigger stars at Summer League. Maybe we’re just getting smarter. I don’t know. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. So, I I think he’s a good player, but I’m not sure he brings the pizzazz of the Zion. Amid here, to your point, pardon me for interrupting, but this is to your point. We just watched Cooper lose in the NCAA. Not too excited to see him in summer league. Yeah. Yeah. He’s a good player, but the level of excitement you’re talking about is when we think there’s a guy’s like he could be the best player ever, right? When’s the last one? Is it was it Wimby? Yeah. Yeah. Zion prior to that. Yeah, probably Zion. Zion’s summer league was crazy. He only played one game, a half or whatever, right? It’s like, oh, I remember going to it. I was like, oh, I didn’t have the opportunity. Right. Right. Came in the day of and came in later. Right. those guys that have a chance to be like maybe one of the greatest ever or the guys that are so unique that you just can’t wait to see them see them. Yeah. Some of those guys are so great you can’t wait to see them play, you know, if they were down the street in somebody’s driveway shooting free throws. You’d run down there to see them. Mhm. There I think next year is going to be one of those cuz there there’s not only one or two there. We’ve what we’re hearing is there’s about three to five guys who really, you know, Boozer uh there there’s some guys the Boozer twins. There are some people uh that are Gillinus’s son. There’s so many different guys that are looking to be the next big thing. And then of course, you know, you’ll have uh smaller James, right? Right. Uh he he’ll be there, Bryce. And so there there’s going to be so many different I think next year is going to be one of those you got to get to the summer league. You have to get there. No doubt about it. you know, please everybody try to get there just because of some of the names. So, I thought Cooper would bring it. It seems like people are super excited. Um, you know, AJ, excuse me, VJ Edgecom, he’s already hurt, but it looks like he’ll be fine. Look like he’ll play, but beyond that, I don’t really, you know, Ace Bailey people are excited about and just kind of intrigued on what he’s going to do. Dylan Harper, but I don’t think there’s star star potential lock in this this summer. The interesting thing about Cooper Flag is Jason Kidd saying, “Oh, I’m gonna make him uncomfortable. We’re gonna have him playing on the perimeter and running point.” So, you know, he’s basically saying he’s gonna do some of the things he did when he had Giannis. Make him uncomfortable. See how he responds. So, you know, because they do have a lot of very talented front court players as it is. So, Cooper Flag running point in summer league. I I’m interested to see how that goes. Alaluca Donic. Yeah, I I suppose you could say that. All right. 339140 800 920140 AC is hanging on to talk with us. AC, what’s up? Hey, how you guys feeling? Thank you so much for taking my call. Absolutely. What’s on your mind? Well, the Sacramento Kings, I mean, how come, Here’s my question. Every team’s out there. We’re talking about NBA, not summer league. They’re too busy acquiring this guy, that guy. How come Sacramento Kings, they cannot have a team the way they did back in 2002? I mean, what’s the po like I mean, it’s not it’s not like there’s a problem with money. They do have money. How come they’re not investing? I mean, God, OKC won the championship, man. Isn’t that crazy? What about Sacramento Queens? We let him get his shot off. I don’t know. That’s it. That’s true. But yeah, you’re a Laker fan. Yeah, obviously. Yeah. Can’t mess with you. Why can’t the Kings just have a team like they did in 2002? Great question, Macy. That’ll be the theme of the show today. Yeah. Hey, give us a call. 25 years ago, man. Take me back though, too. That’s fresh in high school, baby. Last year, get it rocking. Yeah. You know? Mhm. It just I don’t know, man. It It’s It is. And the the Kings aren’t the only team who hasn’t done anything. Mhm. We’ve talked about it. You guys have talked about it. Just I mean to the to the extreme. this cap. Everybody is worried about aprons and second aprons, first aprons, third, 15th aprons. You know, people are chin-checking their pockets right now, right? It is what it is, right? And so the Kings aren’t the only The Warriors have done nothing. Have you turned on and listened to anybody out in the Bay Area right now? They are They’re not happy. They’re fired up. Yeah, they have not done anything. What has Minnesota done? Um kept a couple of their guys. You know what’s interesting about the whole off season. Um it looks like some of these teams might still be laying in wait. I know this sounds ridiculous, but this was Winhorse talked about this today for Giannis. Now, we thought we knew that Giannis was gonna stay correct, but he was just um somebody talked to him. Okay. Yes, that you’re exactly right. He and somebody asked him if uh if he will stay with the Bucks. He said, “Uh, I probably will. We’ll see.” And Winhor says that’s why there’s about five or six teams banking on the we’ll see. He says there’s there’s a lot of teams now still thinking and hoping that Giannis becomes available. H I don’t know. I’m not putting too much stock in that Jay, but it is interesting. speaks to uh just how good he is that so many teams still right now are waiting to see if he decides he wants out of Milwaukee. And today I was on a podcast with Ian Begley and I was on because that Kyle couldn’t do it and Jay lined it up. Um and one of the things Ian Begley was talking about today um was the fact that he says from what he hears, you know, Ian Begley very well connected. He says he’s hearing that most people around the NBA or a lot of people, they don’t think that the Miles Turner deal, Miles Turner going to the Bucks is going to be enough to keep Giannis on board. You know, yeah. Uh what do we got, Jay? We got that high speeded sound. Yeah. Here’s Here he is with Texas is bad. Yeah. Hell no. A lot of people tried to convince me tried to convince me to go and play there and stuff. Oh, no. No. So you stay in Milwaukee. Uh pro probably we’ll see. Yeah. Now that’s nothing right. Even Windhorse says uh I’m not going to analyze something. He said seaside in Greece. But what I will say is the will see that is essentially what there’s about five or six teams banking on. So everyone’s hanging on Giannis’s every word right now. Yeah. Well, could you imagine being Giannis and everything? It’s like LeBron with the decision and it to their beck and call. We’ve seen KD get smooshed over. We’ve heard guy even DeAndre Jordan, remember DeAndre Jordan at one point in time was a free agent and people were flying in and to Dallas and to come check him out and all that type. Excuse me. There is there is something to what Giannis said and this is the way I take it. He doesn’t know. We’ll see. I I don’t know, man. I’m It’s I also think he enjoys it a little bit. Not as much as LeBron. I do, too. And that’s fine. You know that you’re right. But some of those guys really enjoy, you know, Dame, remember Dame used to subweet all the time and when he was still with Portland and he’d like subweet or he would post a picture of him in a Laker jersey, people go, “Oh.” And I think he just enjoyed the whole cat and mouse. Yeah. And and I think in talking to Dame’s Peoples and you know the the Dame Whisperers like Chris Haynes and things like that, I think it was a way kind of like what Kobe did, it was a threat like, “Hey, get get some people through here. We’re we’re trying to win, you know, and so it’s posturing. It’s really posturing.” And I I can see Giannis doing that. for me when you listen to Giannis and he’s one of those people who are who is actually an out in front of the camera like you said that he doesn’t mind being part of uh technology these days you know the culture being a phenomenon uh he he is even joked and played about you know starting Twitches and all these different things hence why he was with ice speed over in Greece that he definitely enjoys this but I also believe he’s just one of those guys that doesn’t He goes with the flow, man. Like he he he it feels like he’s a type of dude that’s going to do what he wants to do, but he goes with the flow. He really does. I don’t really see And you never know nowadays, you know, 20 years ago, I just oh, he’s not leaving. You never know what players now. You never know. The dude’s got so much money. He go play anywhere and do what he want to do. Mhm. And the thing you got to look at now, getting back to as you mentioned the aprons, if you’re a Giannis and you’re looking around, hey, I could go there or maybe I could go there. You got to talk to people with those teams or your own representation, say, how would that happen? Well, if you go there, that team would have to give up this guy and that guy, right? Oh, maybe I wouldn’t want to go there. There’s nobody over there. Right. Right. You think the uh and we’ll probably talk about this today as we see Jay Will over in Oklahoma City looking like he’s getting $258 million. Do you think Giannis would break the bank in this this cap CBA? This apron strapped CBA. Like if there’s anybody, he’s probably as close as possible to breaking the breaking the bank. Like you know what? I don’t mind spending an extra $20 million every year to get Giannis part of because you’re gonna get it back anyway to, you know, make him part of my uh my squad, my organization. As long as there’s a team that, as I said, if a team can give up what it takes to get him and pay him what it needs to pay him without just gutting the team, which would make it uh pointless to bring him in, you know, but in reality, we’re just looking at big markets. We’re looking at like Ice Ice Speed said, we’re looking at New York. We’re looking at Chicago. We’re looking at LA. We’re looking at Dallas. We’re looking at Miami. I think he left one out. We got uh Golden State. Golden State, too. Yeah. I think they’ve been waiting and waiting since Durant left to try to bring that guy in and they kind of brought Jimmy in last year, but I still think they’re they’re looking for a bigger fish. No, no doubt about it. And they can pay it. We know Laker doesn’t have no problems pulling out his wallet. And so I I’m with you. I I think it’s going to take a 8 n 10 type market. You know, I I was trying to think like Brooklyn’s New York, so they probably be involved, but why in the hell would you want to go to Brooklyn, you know, Boston, stuff like that? Brooklyn has been supposedly they’ve been gearing up to make a run at Giannis for years, but I think they kind of decided that uh well, I don’t know. It looks like maybe they decided, all right, it’s not to be, but they may be one of the teams that Wind Horse is talking about because there have been reports for a couple years that they’ve been gearing up so that they’d be in position to make a run at Yiannis if he becomes available. again, he he’s still not even available. Yeah, but you know, we were just talking about the Kings and we had the AC got us off to that cracker jack of a start today. Uh talking about the Kings and why can’t they be like 2002. Um I was thinking about this today and I saw some audio that I know you heard and saw as well. Jay Zack Lavine up at the American Century Championship. He was talking to Monty Pool. money pool from NBC Sports Bay Area who we just had on our show last week and they were just talking about the Kings and everything and last year how rough it was and Zack Lavine said you know I’m just I’m looking forward to a fresh start and I’m looking forward to starting at ground zero and ground zero is a really interesting phrase to me because you know ground zero means a couple things it does mean your starting point ground zero but ground zero also means where a nuclear bomb went off and in a way for the Kings last year uh and I’m not making lighting There’s far too many bombs in the world. There always have been. But it was almost like a bomb went off here for Kings fans when you look at all the changes. I do think maybe the organization doesn’t take that into account enough. I know the players talk about it. You know, Zach talks about it and they kind of they kind of smooth it over. Um, and you have Dear talking about I’ve never been through anything like that. Fans are still kind of reeling from all of that. Now, I know there’s only so much you can do. You got to uh onward and upward. But I think Jay, there are a lot of Kings fans that are still kind of kind of buckled from all the changes last year. Coach of the year gone, GM of the year gone, and your franchise player gone. Okay, you can argue, well, it was time for him to go. Time for him to go. Okay, but still they’re all gone. So, it is kind of a starting over point. Uh, and it’s a really interesting time, but it’s a time where a lot of people are are anxious and just unsure of where this all goes from here. Yeah, I might agree with that a little bit. I I would also say I think soon as the ball is thrown up in October, we’ll forget all about it because it’ll be what what are we paying attention to now? You know, we’re in a microwavable society. And so I I do think because that’s the last impression, the last thing that we’ve seen, the last thing that we felt as Kings fans. Yeah, we’re we’re uneasy. We’re trying to figure it out. And we also have a new regime in here who has, you know, slowly as they should should, right, have come in and paced yourself and really orchestrated, you know, certain deals that they feel is okay at the moment. And so, yeah, I I think there’s a little bit to that for sure. I I can agree to that. But I also think it’s just because it’s the last thing we have experienced. We’re living in the moment, right? But my point is, all right, all that’s gone now. That’s fine. That happens. But what is next? because these were potentially foundational things that were taken out. Again, okay, maybe it had to happen, but we’re still waiting, I think, as fans and as you say, the organization is still working um cautiously um good work to figure those things out, but for fans, it’s still a matter of h I’m not sure where we’re going from here, you know? So, well, I don’t think they I don’t as a fan, you how in the hell can we know where we’re going if the organization doesn’t seem to know where they’re going, right? And I in the form of I think they have a direction of where they want to go. I think they have a plan. No doubt about it. You definitely you don’t come in you don’t accept a job if you’re Scott Perry. You don’t go out get guys like BJ Armstrong. You don’t you don’t choose Doug Christie. You don’t allow Coach Christie to jump out go get BJ Jack and guys like that if you don’t have a plan. There’s a plan. No doubt about it. Doesn’t mean we got to agree with it, but you can believe there’s a plan. Scott Perry doesn’t get this far in his career if if he doesn’t come in with the plan. It’s almost one of those things and why do you know this when there are job interviews throughout the league, coaching GMs, general managers, I’ll peel back the curtain a little bit and Draper is going to join us next segment. We can have him speak to this cuz he I know he he has a lot more information, has been around it a lot more than I have, but just my time in the league, coaches walk around with binders. General managers walk around with plans. Things are ready to go. It’s just you we can’t move you can’t move pieces across the board as quick as you want sometimes, right? I understand that. I don’t disagree with that. But I think some of those plans for the kings are depending on things that are out of their control. Absolutely. So that’s why for even them it’s like this is what we’d like to do but we might have to pivot in this direction and from a fan base perspective just interested where is where is this headed you know it gets back to that thing you and I talked about last time was just you and I on the show that whole patience word and fans are you know why they don’t bring that up I don’t know how much more they have left so it starts tonight I mean we’re ground zero and it’s summer league this afternoon and this is where whatever the new regime whatever the new era of kings basketball is going to be it starts tonight. Yeah. Well, it it it does it it’s we’ll see the excitement level. Uh, you know, I don’t know. Maybe we could put a meter out. Allan Styles excitement level, Kyle Draper excitement level, and then people who’s not there excitement, me and you excitement level, you know, the difference. So, I I don’t I don’t truly know how Kings fans see the current state as of right now, July 10th, you know, 2025. And before I forget, shouts out, happy birthday to my beautiful mother. Happy birthday to my mom’s, man. Much love. Raised me as a single parent, man. Wouldn’t wouldn’t be here without my mom. Hey, what are we doing? We should have started the show with that. Yeah, absolutely. Unless maybe she doesn’t listen to the start of the show. No, she does. That’s great. Yeah, my my mom is up runs to the own beat of her drum, but no, definitely uh if she’s in the car, she does. She turns us on here and there. So, just want to say happy birthday to moms, too. Happy birthday. No doubt about it. Yeah, that’s tremendous. Good for you, Kyle. Draper is gonna And good for her. Yes. Yes. Two years young, brother. Uh-huh. Yeah. That’s young. Young Middle Ages. Uh-huh. Uh, looks like we are going to have Kyle Draper when we come right back. Let’s go ahead and take a little bit of an early break here so we can get Drapes ready to go. Draper from Las Vegas. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing how you hit certain shots on the course. Molly Brad, a Golf Digest best young teacher, sees a classic mistake on uphill chips. Players will grab a sand wedge thinking the high lofted club will get the ball in the air, but instead the ball pops too high and comes up short. Use a club with less loft, Brad says. Grab your pitching wedge, nine iron, or even eight iron, depending on how far you hit the ball. Set up with your hips and shoulders in line with the hill. The handle is going to come back and there will be added loft to the club, so it will have more height like a sand wedge. Your pitching wedge and your nine iron don’t have as much loft as your sand wedge, but when you’re hitting from a steep uphill lie, your pitching wedge is going to produce sand wedge-ike results. You’ll get that high trajectory up and over the hill to land soft on the green. That’s your golf to go. I’m Frank Lar Rosa. Zip Recruiter is the place. Watch the show on youtube.com/sacktownports140 or listen on the Sacktown sports app. Is that Dino? Is that Dean Martin? That is the only star I know is bigger than the great Dean Martin joins us now. He’s in Las Vegas himself or King Summer League. Apparently he got his credential situation all sorted out. Kyle’s right for him. There you go. Can you guys hear me? Okay. Can you hear me good? Yes. Yes. Yes, that’s always the uh test when you get down here to summer league. It’s like, “All right, I’m hooked up. I’m not an engineer, you know, so I don’t know if I’m plugging it into the A slot, the B slot, the two slot, the one slot, but I think I got it all set up here. I think I’m good to go here.” Yeah. So, u I would ask you to kind of set the scene for us. How how are your travels anyway? I know you just got situated. What’s going on, man? I tell you what, summer league is it’s like a family reunion, if you will. And I I saw I think it was my boy Campio or somebody on the YouTube catching up with his all his Celtics buddies. Oh yeah, I saw my boy Gary Washburn, Boston Globe. I saw one of my agent friends who I knew from Boston chopped it up with him. And I also got to meet Omari Sanca II of the Detroit Free Press. Remember he had Dennis Shruder news and I told him, “Got to get you on the show, my man.” So, uh, maybe tomorrow we can get him on and, uh, talk some Dennis Shruder with Omari tomorrow. So, it’s been great so far, man. I’m seeing everybody out here. I actually, uh, saw Nate Clifford when I was walking in the hotel as soon as I got here. And I hadn’t met him yet before because the press conference, it was so crazy. Everybody trying to get a piece of him and everything. So, I had the chance to chop it up with him. Also, Maxim Reo got to chop it up with him. So, now I’m in my element, man. This is exactly where I’m supposed to be right now. Mhm. Speaking of NE Clifford, uh ESPN, maybe you saw the stripes. They have today 30 players you need to pay attention to in summer league. And they have one guy for each team. And for the Sacramento Kings, a guy you need to pay attention to, Nick Clifford, quite familiar with the Thomas and Knack Thomas and Max Court, blah blah blah. Kevin Pelton wrote this and uh just talked about how how well he played in college. Um, so not much more on that other than how well he played in college and he’s on familiar footing, but he’s the guy watch. No, exactly. No, he’s uh, you know, he he’s the real deal. And here’s the thing about Meek. When I caught up with him today, he has a presence about him, fellas, where, you know, it it’s like a quiet confidence, if you will. He like oozes it, but it’s not in your face or anything like that. you know, we talked about, you know, just his first game and everything, any pregame routine he’s doing, you know, taking a nap, eating pasta, you know, anything like that. And he’s like, “No, I’m just come out there and hoop, man.” And so, uh, I’m excited for him, man. This is uh, you know, I mean, we can’t I I guess I’ll preface that by saying Whitey and Jay, if he comes out and lays an egg and sucks, oh, it’s just summer league. You know what I mean? It’s just one game. Now, if he drops 35 and, you know, eight boards and seven assists, it’s like, yes, that’s my guy. And so, you know, I I’ll have to temper expectations. If it’s not great, you know what? Who cares? It’s just summer league game one. No, that’s true. And hopefully that won’t happen. But I used to work with, you know, my friend Mark Kryler’s from Oklahoma, so I remember kidding him when Trey Young played his first summer league game and I think he I don’t know, he’s 0 for 13 or something, you know, and I was, “Oh, this guy’s terrible.” Well, obviously he ended up being a pretty good player, so you know, one bad one bad summer league game really doesn’t mean anything. Uh, we hope he doesn’t have a bad game tonight. What would you say, you know, for all of the fans and all the excitement we all have about Nick Clifford, he can bring this and that, what do you think, honestly, the questions uh are for him as far as whether he can be a good pro. They’re not going to be answered tonight. Far from it. But what do you think scouts are really looking at? What are the Kings really looking uh in terms of improvement from him over not just tonight but over this season? Well, I think you know obviously we want to see him defensively. Can he guard multiple positions? But from an offensive standpoint, I think it’s two things that we’re looking at. Can he handle the ball and make plays for others? And can he knock down the jump shot, right? Like, you know, does the jump shot translate? Does it float out there? And that that’s what I’m most interested in seeing, you know, throughout summer league and training camp and preeason, you know, does he have an NBA ready jump shot, you know, and if he does, I mean, because I think honestly why he and when I talk about the ball handling, I’m actually not worried about that, you know, from the tape I saw and everything and and and the way he handled the ball in college, I’m not too worried about him with the ball in his hands. But can he knock down the corner three, the above the break three when teams collapse on Demar or Zack, you know, I think that’s going to be key uh for him this upcoming season. Yeah. Um for all the other things we look at from a player, if you can make shots, you’re going to be in the league a long time. Yeah. By the way, Drapes, sidebar, speaking of guys who can make shots, just looking at guys that are still out there. All right. I don’t know if the Kings would have any interest. They got a lot of guards. What do you think of Garrison Matthews? Oh, he played with a little edge, too. He got a little dog in him, too. Yeah, he could shoot. I’m not totally against it. Like you said, we got a a plethora of guards, but I’m actually not against that move, Whitey. Where’s he at? Is he a free agent? How come nobody about that guy? I believe he’s still Yeah, I just checked today, you know, best still available free agents and and he’s on there. and he’s one of those guys, you know, I don’t like him because like you say, plays with a little that edge, kind of snarls at you and makes threes, but was with the Hawks and so he’s somebody still out there, but as you said, Kings are just have too many guards as it is right now. I I Yeah, I will say, you know, there’s been all that chatter about Malik. Um, if Malik was moved, I would not be opposed to bringing in a Garrison because here’s why. Garrison is the type of player I think doesn’t need 20 minutes a night, 25 minutes a night. He may be a, you know, suffer some DMP CDs and nobody’s raising an eyebrow. You try that with Malik, you know, it’s like, oh, what do we, you know, and so I would not be opposed to Garrison Matthews if there became a spot open there. All right. Just something to keep in mind. That’s a good that’s a good pool right there. I’m that’s rare for you to you know we rarely agree even I think if we do agree we don’t admit that we agree with each other when when it comes to players. Jay was asked was asking an interesting summer league question. Uh and I know you just got there but what’s your sense of how much excitement there is there throughout the the the buildings and throughout the league on Cooper Flag and you know his first games. How how much uh buildup is there compared to what we’ve had for other guys like WBY and so on about Cooper Flag’s debut? I I will say uh several people have hit me up looking for tickets or trying to get in and I got one guy, he’s from Sacramento but lives down here. He says my buddy was going to check as well for the game uh at 4 4:30 or whatever it is um 5:00. Like, so even talking to Kings people, I had somebody ask me, one of the coaches, “Drapes, are you going to stay our whole game or you going to go watch Cooper flag and them two?” I was like, “Come on, big fella. Just during the timeout, so I’mma dip over there.” You know, you know what I mean? I told him, “Maybe at halftime I’ll go check out Cooper.” I mean, there’s a little bit of buzz, but this is nothing like Wimby. I’ll tell you, Wimby was Oh my gosh. Wimby it was so packed you couldn’t even find seats in the arena. Forget a sellout. I’m talking people are standing in the tunnels, you know, on the concourse trying to get a look. I mean, people are elbow to elbow. There’s a different vibe. No doubt about it. You know, it’s still early though. You know, we just had the first game uh wrap up here uh just a second ago. So, it’s still early, but it’ll be packed out for that game, but not quite like Wimi. It’s a little different. Where are you exactly? By the way, we can see you, but where are you? I’m in undisclosed location. That boy that Dre, don’t tell. You know, you might have some NBA people listening or something like that. I’m in the same place I was last year. And I’ll tell you what, this place is a place of gold. I know Allan uh Styles is looking for a place on Monday. Yeah. But he can’t have my location because my location is a meeting room where they gather in the morning to talk about the day. But because our show starts at two, they’re all they’re all out of here. And so, but his show starts at 10:00, that’s when they’re meeting. So, he can’t have this spot. This is a good spot. Who who is having those meetings? The Kings. like your NBA staff, you know, summer league staff and stuff like that. Yeah. All right. And what’s so great about it, Whitey? Right behind me, NBA media, like my boy Washburn, Omari, like I do remember that from last year. Yeah. Who’s over there, man? Who’s over there right now? I mean, my boy Gary Washburn. We got to get Wash on, dude. Do we want to waste it the first day? I get him on right now. Yes, man. We only got a day and a half. You ain’t going to be here tomorrow. We all know. We know that. We know after we we know we we get Gary Washburn on and and we can ask that’s the point. Pull him inside. All right. All right. I I’ll go get him here. All right. Come back. Yeah. Wait. Wait. Real fast. Why? I mean, you’re next week. You’re leaving, right? Or are you there next week, too? No, I’m here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Big fell. Okay. My bad. I didn’t look at the schedule. That’s what And he’s here till Thursday of next week. Okay. Well, go get somebody else. There’s somebody else around the corner, man. You You acting like our boy Alice Styles, man. Like this ain’t my first rodeo jet. You know what I mean? I’m only here two hours today. I got the full four tomorrow. I’ll probably be here and I could pull him like Omari Sofa. We going to get on tomorrow to talk about Dennis Shruder. By the way, he ain’t going to be here. Whitey, so we and this is more important than any of that. I don’t know if you heard, but uh today is Jay’s mom’s birthday. So the show is dedicated to her today. Yeah. Happy birthday, Mama Jay. Okay. How old How old did you say Jay? The big 6’2. Shut up. 62. My mom’s 62. You know what that And this ain’t no offense, no shade to your mom, Jay. No, it’s never. I might be in terms of I might be closer to your mom’s age than I am your age, bro. No, no, that’s not true, dude. I’m 50. Your mom’s 12 years older than me. How old are you? 40. 40. 42. I just turned 40. My mom is literally 20 years in front of me. Okay. Okay. Yeah. She was moving and grooving on the LA streets. You know what I’m saying? Oh, I know. I know how that is. Trust me. Trust me. I I know how that is, man. Happy birthday, Mom. You said 62. 62. Mhm. Man, that’s young. I said she’s still in her middle ages. Yeah, that’s young. I don’t even remember when I was 62. We’ll be back more from Summer League, maybe with a media luminary. Who knows? I I I got my guy Boston Globe columnist covers the Celtics, Gary Washburn. Wash, we appreciate you jumping on. We got my man Kevin Whitey Glee and Jay Johnson. And before we get into NBA talk, let me tell you what was going down. All right. They’re like, “Drapes, you in Vegas? Where the guest at? Sorry. Sorry. No, we’re we’re satisfied with that. Yeah, we’re happy with that. Yeah. Oh, what’s up with you, man? How you got Dude, you guys should have seen first thing I said to Washburg when I walked in. Now, mind you, he covers the Boston Celtics. First thing, remember the first thing I said to you? Yeah. What’ I say? Uh, it’s going to be a long year. No, I said, “Damn, y’all going to be in the lottery this year, huh?” Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. They going to drop. Yeah. Stuff’s going to drop a little bit. Let me ask you this, Gary, because you you’ve covered the NBA for years. Years. this new CBA, this second is this actually hurting the league in a way, do you think? I mean, a team like the Celtics having to break it up a little premature. I think the overall like it doesn’t discou It discourages teams from being better managed with their talent. Yeah. Um I think the players are still making the money obviously we seen. I mean Jaylen Williams just re-uped Devin Booker yesterday, Shay. So dudes are still getting paid but they’re going to get paid by different teams. I I don’t think I think this is preventing guys from like let’s say playing 10 12 years with the same team because eventually you going to have to get that real bag and the team is like well are you worth it? I mean obviously the small market owners I don’t know whether Sacramento was involved but when the Warriors did their you know had their dominance they were not the own a lot of other other owners small market medium market were not happy with the Warriors being able to just you know spend money and that’s where every it all started where you I mean obviously you have a team with Durant right and and Draymond and Steph and Clay it’s they were unhappy with that although they that that happened to well managed. So unfortunately now it it encourages uh maybe the smaller market teams and I think these I think the best thing for Kings fans to look at was this year’s finals where you had two smaller market teams. You just got to be managed well. I mean you’ve got to have sign the right players. Those players have to work out. Your rookies have to play well. But if you do that you can get to the finals. And so maybe that’s a maybe that’s a sign for Kings fans. I have a guy I went to high school with who’s a huge Kings fan and uh Yeah. Yeah. We out there. I’m telling you, we out there. Kings fan and you know, he he lives and dies and and he you know, he’s he it’s been hard. Um, but I think this I think this whole time in this whole uh, you know, situation with the finals encourages is is good for the the the Kings and the and the, you know, Timberwolves and, right, you know, Toronto and Atlanta and Charlotte and teams, but you got to be well managed, right? Gary Washburn with us from the Boston Globe. And Gary, speaking of Boston, uh, and the media landscape there, what kind of crater did it leave in the media landscape in Boston when Kyle Draper left to come out to, uh, uh, California? Uh, it was big. Yeah, I’ll say that. I’ll give him that. You want to know how Let me Let’s call Let’s keep it real because me and Gary were just talking about this. We were just talking about I left. This dude done got married. My other boy Ace Sherrod Blakeley is walking the straight line. He’s walking, you know, if I was still there. Yeah, we would be together. So, all together, right? Right. I mean, all together. It was time for me to leave, man. Gary’s leveled up. He’s settled down now. So, I’m glad I could help out in there. Congratulations. Yeah, Drake. Yeah. No, Drake had a Drake was obviously had a a big impact in Boston. you know, I wish he was still around and calling the Celtics games. Uh, you know, oh, don’t get me started there, Patreon show or something like that. I mean, we’ll give that away for free behind the payw wall. Yeah. Twitch, you got to the Twitch. Yeah. I wish he was still, you know, being the the color the playby-play guy for the Celtics instead of instead of the Kings. So although the King, you know, King good team with with, you know, with Mark and and and Drake doing it. Uh, but yeah, we we miss him in Boston. I mean, we can end the interview right there. End this interview right there. Let me ask you, one of the conversations that we’ve had on this show is Joe Mazoula and I think we were talking about his music preferences and how he controls the ox cord yesterday and uh he just seems so tense from the outside looking in. How is Boston, you know, I guess surrounding Joe Missoula? Obviously, he seems to be a great coach leading the team to a championship. What What’s your take on how Missoula and the city of Boston and the organization, how they’re all coming together? Wow, that’s a I might not be the best person to answer that question. My bad. My bad. All right, so how Jason’s injury wounds here, man. Yeah, there’s like a there’s like a mixtape on YouTube of me and him going at it on several press. Right. Right. It’s like you if you look at the one stuff that our mixtape right next to it. We’ll find it. We’ll find it and we’ll play it. Maybe. Um Joe is an unusual guy. He’s a very He’s a He’s a brilliant man, a very intelligent man. It’s all about like competition. I mean, the dude is literally competes in jiu-jitsu tournaments in the off season. I think he was just in one a couple of weeks ago. like he he literally came to a uh a press conference with like he missed a game a couple years ago because he couldn’t see because he had he was playing pickup basketball and took a shot to the eye like this is the this is this is the uh the I think his first season and it was just like that shows you how intense I mean the dude’s like he’s still obviously in his 30s so he’s hooping he’s doing the jit like he’s just a dude who loves competition and I think that’s rubbed off and the players have gotten used to him and which is a good thing. They they he he loves him, he embraces him, he encourages him. Um I think that that’s what um has has kind of you know made it to where he’s was able to win the championship because of that like his bond with the players. But is he is probably the most unusual guy I’ve ever covered in terms of his personality. uh his desire and and embrace of awkwardness. You know, like how people you go to dinner and then one person just doesn’t speak like they’re cool with being awkward. Like they’re cool with the awkwardness. Like sometimes you just say you just say, “Hey, how you doing?” Or you just speak to someone because it’s awkward and there’s awkward silence and you don’t want to be awkward. Well, that’s not Joe. Joe li like that’s one of his hobbies, you know? That’s what he does. copy of being awkward and just awkwardness. And so that’s the that’s kind of some of the press conferences that have happened over the years where he just gives you the answer. Not that that he thinks you want to hear, but he’ll give you the truth. And there’s I said there’s a whole mixtape. Oh yeah. So um but I think the city has learned to uh love and embrace him, but they also want to see this is a big year for him. They I think the three-point thing, it’s just something me and him went at for a while. Uh that kind of war last year, especially that Knicks series when they missed about 70 of them in the first two games of that series and they end up that losing those two games, lost in that series. And so there’s kind of this well with no Tatum this year and with no Porzingis, you gonna keep shooting him threes? Like what’s going on with the threes? Like what you going to do differently? So, this is kind of a big year for him in terms of like how he’ll approach coaching and the offense without Tatum, without Porzingis, and and without Holiday. Do you think, Gary, you know, two a two-part question. One, this is a guy that won a championship a couple of years ago, but I heard Brad Stevens had to address his future. You know, Joe’s our coach. He’s Do you think he could be on the hot seat this season? And the second part of that is regarding the threes. Do you think the league is changing? Maybe going away from just jack up 50 60 threes after we saw OKC and Indiana uh advance. I think the OKC thing uh they’re the way they play defense. Yeah. Right. Where they just let you shoot threes and they cut off the middle in the paint. So, if you’re not a good three-point shooting team, but you can fall in love because let’s face it, and I know y’all didn’t seen this in Sacramento, there’s plenty of dudes launching threes that like you’re like, “Hey, man, that’s not you.” I don’t know if you all remember that Patrick Euing uh video when he was at Georgetown, is that the shot you take? Do you do that in practice? Do you work on that? Like, what is like what the like he’s looking at this player like, “Why are you taking that shot, bro?” Like, what’s going on, man? like and now the league is filled with players who are just launching threes. I mean, I just watched the big three yes a couple days ago and Dwight Howard is like taking corner threes and you think that’s get you back in the league, bro? Um, you know, so like I think that that the three-point shot is kind of evolving. I think that you still want to have a lot of shooters and spread the floor and you know, but the five out, I don’t know. I think that’s might be changing a little bit because obviously I mean as we saw like the three was a big weapon for the Thunder uh and for the Pacers but not as much. They didn’t you know the Celtics were bombarding them. Yeah. Uh obviously setting records the year before and it just did not work as well. They were not as good of a team shooting the three this year and it was one of the reasons why they were eliminated. Gary Washurn from the Boston Globe. What’s your sense of how Mike Brown’s going to do coaching the Knicks? Wow, that’s a tough one. Like Mike Brown got nine lives. Like we we talk about like we talk about like I was like there’s no way he’s getting this job. When I saw him interview like that’s I was like that’s good. Mike’s trying to get up off his feet get the interview and just say you know right just put his name back out there. Good for Mike. Oh man, you know applause for Mike. Kudos for Mike. And then he get damn job. Um, just like but I think he’s a good coach. I don’t know what happened in Sac I’m sure y’all know much more what happened in Sacramento cuz no like like De’Arra’s like it wasn’t me like it was a bunch of shaggies. Everybody wasn’t me. It wasn’t me. It wasn’t me. It’s like it was like well who who got this man fired? One of y’all did. One of y’all did it like dudes. No comment, man. That was because of the cow game. But in that game, Russell, the first time he ever touched the ball in college, he ran the kickoff back a 100 yards. And that dude was was was real. Like he didn’t get a real shot in the NFL, but I’mma say Russell White, you could say Jaylen Brown, you could say Share Abdul Rahheem. Yeah, you’re listening to the Gary Washburn show with Kyle Draper, Jay Johnson, and Kevin Gleason. That guy’s funny. Drapes, I know you he’s hilarious. No, many many uh good times uh in the streets of Boston with one Gary Washurn, man. So, uh yeah, that’s my guy right there. Yeah. Yeah, that’s gonna be a tough one for you to top, you know, because you’re we’re expecting you to bring in a lot of luminaries one after the other from that other room there and you starting uh, you know, with a with a high bar with Gary Washburn. It’s going to be tough. Yeah, that’s true. You know how it is though. You want to kick off summer league on the right foot. You know what I mean? You you want to, you know, get off to an early 100 lead, if you will. And uh, you know, and so we’ll have more guests, you know, every break or so. I’ll go just mosey on behind me and see who’s over there and just grab people. We’ll have much more. Let me say this about the Mike Brown situation. It was interesting his reaction. And then today, Drapes, as you know, I mean, you were invited to be on Ian Begley’s uh pod. You couldn’t do it because you’re in Vegas. So, I I went on there and you’re and you’re dead. And you know, they asked a lot of questions about what happened with Mike Brown. And it’s like even Ian Begley, you know, I’d say this happened and that happened and he the players wouldn’t do what he said. And Ian would kind of look at me and go, “Huh, it’s interesting.” I just think leaguewide there’s still a lot of people that don’t know what happened. Yeah. like and and h why did it happen so quickly? Like how did you go turn like you know less than a season and a half away from being coach of the year and having the executive of the year and the team and everything and you know it it it was it was a number of things if we’re being honest. Let’s let’s call it what it is though. You know the players didn’t respond to Mike but also the roster wasn’t necessarily Mike Brown approved if you know what I mean. you know, and so there was a lot going on there. It wasn’t, you can’t just say it was one thing. It was a number of things that happened. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. Here’s uh some breaking news regarding uh former king. Oh, do do I need to raise that arm or no? I don’t know. I don’t think so. Yeah, I know where you’re going with this. I’ll let you decide whether to do I don’t think so. Okay. Okay. Free agent Marvin Baggley III has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Wizards. returns to the Wizards after playing in Washington for a year and then being traded uh what was it traded to let’s see uh traded to Memphis at the February deadline. Yeah. So that was I was hoping against that somehow someway maybe they find a way to bring Hags back but it’s not to be. Drapes as you said it’s not to be. Well think about it like this too whitey. I mean Baggley’s still in the league. Wiseman’s still in the like you it’s nine lives in the in the NBA for some people right? like you get opportunity after opportunity. What’s up, baby? What’s going on? And so, um, yeah, you know, good for him. I I don’t see it for Washington, but at least he’s still in the league, man. That’s that’s good news for him. Yeah, we also have some, it’s not breaking news, but interesting uh information from Anthony Slater, who seems to think that um the Al Horford thing, speaking of Boston, as we were with you and your buddy Gary Washburn, Al Horford to the Warriors could could be gaining some traction. Although Steph says he’s a great player, I’ll talk about it if something happens. So, yeah. Yeah. And I was talking to a source actually about Al Horford today out here in Vegas and I was told he legitimately is Wayne retiring. Like retirement is still very much an option uh for Al Horford. So retirement or Golden State. And so he’s you know and the person I talked to said you know Al’s going to take his time. You know there’s no rush to do it right now or anything like that. So, uh, yeah, man. It’d be crazy to have Al Horford down the street there in in San Francisco playing for the Warriors, my guy. Playing for the Warriors, Whitey. Yeah, that that would be tough. That would be tough. And Jay up said about this news with uh Jaylen Williams agreeing to a 5-year maximum rookie contract extension with the Thunder that could reach $287 million. I don’t mean to speak for you, Jay, but you’re trying to figure out how it is that the Thunder have three new extensions totaling up to $822 million, huh? Yeah. I thought I was told by all the NBA capologists that this can’t happen. Guys can’t make $250 plus million dollars on the same team. And I saw Bobby Marks tweet out something and uh it was a long super long tweet, but he was like, “Hey, saying OKC did it right. They’re staggering these contracts. one starts next year, then one starts the year after, and the one after. So, I I get it. But I was told by everybody in the NBA, fellas, that no one can pay all this money. Fans jumped on me. Oh, well, you can’t jump on the apron, Jay, in the second apron and the third apron. You know what? when you win a championship and you garner about a a half a billion dollars in a few months because you made a a great playoff run and you won a championship and you’re selling all this merch and apparel and your stadium is still open every single night or every other night or every two nights, whatever the NBA, you know, allows it to be. Guess what? You’re making money, fellas. And the ownership group is saying, “We’re going to pour that back into the team.” the same thing that Brian Winhorse cried about every single day two years ago with the Warriors and Joe Lakeup and that and that group. They’re pouring the money back into the team and they’re laughing at aprons. Apron, we’ll pay for that. No worries. Because we want to win championships and we want to win. So again, I said, we all know this. Money can change everything. If you want to spend it, spend it. I was told you it couldn’t happen, but all of a sudden, two months later, now it’s happening. Yeah. But drapes, if you’re going to do it, that’s how you have to do it, right? Is you have to draft well and then when you have those guys under contract, and I know they didn’t draft Shay, but you got to give them the extensions when they’re still young enough where you have room to afford it all. Yeah. And when you look at it too, I mean, you know, somebody tweeted out the percentage of the cap that those three guys will be making uh going forward. I think you know when the extensions kick in like the first year is 50%, then 70%, then 100%. And so, you know, what they’re doing is nope, this is our core. This is the guys we’re, you know, married to and we’re going to keep it together as long as possible. I will say Jay, two points to make regarding what you said because I believe if Tatum doesn’t get hurt, Austin keeps it together and said, “Hey, you know, if they challenge for another title, win another title, it’s like, oh man, and so, you know, when you’re winning, it it costs money.” And we we saw with the Warriors for so many years, you know, and I used to have a saying, I don’t live by this anymore, but this is to Jay’s point. I always got money. It’s just a matter of what I want to spend it on. There’s always money out there. It’s just do you want to spend that money? And it’s easier to spend when you’re a championship contender or coming off a championship. Yeah. Here’s here’s the numbers. in 2627. According to ESPN, the Thunder project to have a payroll of 246 million, which would take them Jay over the first and second April, according to Bobby Marks. However, unlike recent high-spending teams, OKC has the flexibility with $77 million in nonGaranteed contracts. They have dozens of draft picks and they’ve structured their contracts in future years to put them in position to keep the core of the roster together for the foreseeable future. You just need a genius running the show. And and Bobby Marks put on that said, “The Thunder have the resources to be sustainable for the foreseeable future. 14 first in the next seven years, including a potential of four in next year’s draft. Revenue stream.” And this is what caught my eye, fellas. Revenue stream. New arena in 2028. Guess what we have here in Sacramento? New arena. National TV contract. Guess what? We’re part of that national TV contract and possible expansion. Las Vegas, Seattle. expansion fees. So, with that being said is is every every NBA organization that has a brand new arena or fairly new arena, Detroit, Milwaukee, all these different places according to Bobby Marx’s structure now with taking the draft picks and everything out. There’s money there to be spun to be spent. And so that’s where I look at it is is why do we continuously keep on hearing, well you can’t go over the sacred it’s it’s just over the top and if you go over the second apron man it’s just going to kill your organization. But then why do you say this every single day almost teams throughout the league are patterning themselves after who? OKC and in Indianapolis. Well OKC is telling you we don’t give a damn. We’re going over to Second Apron to win championships. So, why are so many fans crying about aprons? And that’s what frustrates I just can’t understand it when you got teams who, as Dre said, I’m willing to spend the money cuz guess what? I know it’s going to come back to me second twofold and I want to win. Mhm. I was waiting for Dre to jump in there and explain the second apron. Uh, guess who I saw uh when I first walked in? Kevin O’ Conor. Really? Yeah. Get him on. I read it from you. I hollered at him. We chopped it up. He said he had to go talk to Bobby Marks and everything and I was like, “You got it, man.” Because I don’t understand this cap at all. Like, this is this is ridiculous. The the problem, see the the cap has taken a fun out of trades and free agency because we could say, “Oh, trade this guy, but it’ll always be somebody.” Well, that would hard cap you or you know, you can’t aggregate salaries and it’s like where’s the fun in that, man? You know, and so yeah, I this CBA is the the first April, second April. It’s just too much for, you know, just the casual fan and and even, you know, people like us, man. We’re we’re invested. We’re involved and we don’t even understand it half the time. I think Gary Washburn touched on what to me is the key point. and he pointed out that with the CBA teams actually get punished for for running their basketball ops correctly. You know, it’s like you draft guys in some cases, you bring guys in and then to resign them, you got to pay more than you can afford to pay them. And it’s like, wait a minute, we drafted these guys, we should be able to sign them to whatever we want. So, it’s it it actually works against teams that that do their run their business the correct way. That’s that’s the thing that’s most troubling to me. Right. Exactly. You draft your guys and and you know, you hit on them. Yeah. You know, if they’re extension eligible and all that and and Gary brought it up, the days of guys staying 10, 15 years together or eight years together, it’s over. I mean, you’re going to have so much turnover uh among teams going forward. DES, I don’t mean to put you on the spot. I shouldn’t ask this because I’m not sure the answer. If you’re not sure, it’s we’ll check it. But what do you know where the Kings are just in general in terms of uh you know the cap and aprons? They’re in halfway decent shape, are they not? Yeah, they’re still um bel below the uh first apron for sure. Yeah, know that. You know, I I can pull that up uh real quickly right here because I was looking at it the other day. Um, and you also have to uh look at all right multi-year salary cap table for the Sacramento Kings right now. See, because we got some cap hold still on there and everything that, you know, like Trey Ly, you know, still has a cap hold. Uh, right now our cap, according to this, we’re at 186 million. Um let’s see with the first the first the first 191 192 five the first apron is 19 uh so we’re you know and we got some allocations according to spot track we’re 5 million under the first apron. Yeah and 16.8 under the second apron. So we’re in good shape. But you know here’s the thing and I go back to what I said. You know, if you’re the Kings, it doesn’t make sense to go over the tax and aprons and everything like that if you’re not a true contender. It’s now, you know, to me, and this is why Phoenix, their whole situation is so awful. You know, they’re paying, you know, last year all that money, you know, over the tax second apron and all that for a losing product. That’s just bad business. Now, OKC going forward, OKC is a championship contender. So, they’re willing to spend. That’s good money invested because you’ll get that back. You know, like Jay said, you know, a a new arena, you know, TV deals, championship, extra games. But if you’re a bad team, you don’t want to be spending that kind of money just to be bad, just to win 38 games, just to win 40 games. So, I get it. If you’re Sacramento, you know, no need to spend that money unless you’re sure that’s going to put you in the uh contender category. So, they’re really bracing for a hit in Boston, huh? For as far as this season goes with all the changes they’ve had to make. Oh, yeah. And that’s why they’re even trying to spend a guy like Anthony Simons because he’s on the final year of his deal, and there’s no way they’re going to try to resign him. I I just don’t see it. So, they’re trying to spend him for young assets, draft picks, things like that. and to create some cap space for when Tatum does uh get healthy the following season. So, yeah, they’re up against it. I mean, think about it. You got two 60 million dollar guys on your roster and Tatum and Jaylen Brown. That’s a lot. Yeah. What do you think of uh Devin Booker now? You mentioned Devin Booker. He’s going to be getting what 74 million a year, something like that. Is Is that a Is that a wise investment for the Suns? Yeah, because I mean he he’s he’s much more than a basketball player first of all to that community. Like he’s a god down there. Yeah. You know, and and when you look at the numbers, I think it was ESPN that posted this or said over the last seven years, he’s averaged 25 or more a game every year. Like he’s an incredible basketball player and I don’t think they’d ever trade him. I don’t even think he would ask for a trade. And so he’s almost like Giannis in that way, whereas they’ve done so much for the organization. We’re going to stand behind uh stand near you and stand behind you. And so, no, I I think it’s fine. I I think to me it’d be different if he was 33, 34. How old is Devin Booker? He’s still young, right? I mean, he came in, Devin Booker is 28 years old. He’s still very much He got five or six good years left in his prime. I’m trying to build around that, not spin that off. Mhm. That’s another franchise that appears to have no interest in in tanking. You know, that was a very old, expensive team. Um, they did get a draft pick in a trade for Durant. Uh, but, you know, the Devin Booker signing also shows your fan base like we’re not caving in here. We’re still trying to be uh competitive. So, again, there’s more than more than one way to go about that, trying to become competitive again, right? And and I’m looking at their cap situation. They really got to get off the Brad Beal contract. M you get off the Brad Beal contract, then you can be a player in free agency. That but he’s making Brad Beal set to make 53 million this year, guys. That’s highway robbery. And then a player option for 57 million. Oh my god. Well, then they give him a no trade. They gave him all that money and they gave him a no trade clause. No trade clause at that. And so the word is they’re going to stretch them out, you know, stretch provision and and use them that way. But they got to get that that money off the books. Yeah. Kyle Draper in Las Vegas getting ready for the Kings in the Orlando Magic. So, it’s Jay and Whitey in studio. We have a question from Karen Stigman uh in the YouTube chat. She’s wondering if there’s any way to watch the Kings uh summer league game in Reading. I think if you have NBA TV, I think you’re good. And I think they have NBA TV in Reading, don’t they, Jay? Yeah, they should. Right. Yeah, absolutely. Great folks down in Reading. They got that National Basketball Association television. Mhm. We were trying to figure out Drape’s the level of excitement. You know, our guy Allan, he’s very excited about his first summer league. So, he’s like one of those guys like he’s too excited, you know, settle down. You gonna have to reel him in, man. Man, I don’t know. I’m not I might not even see him. I guess he’ll be there Saturday for Saturday’s game, so I’ll see him then. Yeah. Yeah. Um, you know, it’s summer league. It’s interesting. Um, I I am interested. One of the things other than the things that we’ve talked about this week, I’m interested to see uh the pace at which the Kings play with because I know their summer league coach said, “Oh yeah, we want to play with pace.” And and that would be maybe an indication that playing with pace, which we’ve talked about, you know, every year is something organizationally that they’re committed to. You’re not going to see a lot of offensive sets and things they’re going to run this year in summer league, but a commitment to pace to me would be maybe an interesting indicator of where Doug Christie wants us to go next season. Yeah. You would think, you know, it would mirror Yeah. what we’re going to see, right? You know, the system, the offense and everything like that. And uh yeah, it’s uh it’ll be interesting to see Devin Carter starting at the one. I want to get a good look at at him as well. And so, and how about this way? We’ve been such a DHO heavy offense. Like, what’s the new wrinkles now, right, in this offense? What’s it look like? And so we’ll get our first look coming up at 4:30. And you know, those are some of the things I’ll be looking at for sure. Have you heard anything that you can share with us about any possible meetings with Jonathan Kuminga? Or can we at this point maybe put that thing to bed for the for the Yeah. I mean, you know, maybe not to bed, but you know, it’s napping on the couch right now. How about that? Yeah. Yeah. You know what I mean? Dozing off on the couch right now. I haven’t heard anything uh you know heard uh you know Jay liked that a lot D Jay liked that a lot. Oh did you like that uh Jay crack it up back there? Yeah man my my grandmother y say man the TV’s watching me you know right you know that we all do it. We all do it. Yeah. So I haven’t I haven’t heard anything on the uh Kaminga front. Honestly fellas I haven’t even been around like my credential snafu if you will. My credential got in the team packet. It was in the team packet. So I come to the arena to get my credential. Hey, it’s Drapes here. You got me? And they’re like, uh, we don’t have your credential. And so I had to call a couple of people. Hey, anybody got And so they had my credential back at the hotel. And uh, fortunately Deuce and Mo were coming out and they brought it. And so I haven’t really had a chance to talk to a whole lot of people other than the ones, uh, I saw while I was waiting an hour standing at the credential office. So yeah. Yeah. I know that it looks like maybe this is the Kings roster for the most part, but um I’m still waiting for something. Maybe nothing major, but as we’ve discussed, as everyone knows who follows this, they just have so many guards. There’s got to be like a release of the pressure there in terms of having so many guards at some point. I don’t know if they’ll get anything of value. I don’t know who would be going out, but it’s just too many guards on this roster right now. It it is. And And what’s interesting, you know, and I’ll share this. I shared it with Jay. I I know of another guard that would love to come and play in Sacramento. You know, his representatives are, you know, trying to angle him to sack campaign. Ah, yeah. Yeah. There’s some interest uh from campaign’s camp in coming to Sacramento. And so, but like you said, I just don’t see it right now. Like, we can’t bring in another guard. Maybe if you make some moves, clear out some space in the cabinet, if you will, for another guard. I could see that. But right now, we we got other needs. You know, backup wing that we talked about. Maybe another big, you know, we could use. So, you know, the guards, there’s a lot of them out there. You know, it seems like that’s the position, whether it’s point guard, shooting guard, you know, when we talk about Garrison Matthews. Yeah. That there’s a plethora of options, but we don’t need that right now. Right. Jay, do you think we should send Drapes beyond the wall again to see who he can find over there? Well, you know, it’s getting close to that five o’clock flag game. So, it’s 3:26 right now. So, you got about an hour. I was sitting there looking at uh Yeah, the the Kings game is on NBA TV. The first two are NB NBA TV televised. ESPNU on Monday and then back to and then ESPN two on Wednesday. So, uh you know, you got hour drapes, but yeah, absolutely. Look over that wall. See if there’s something at the end of that rainbow. Yeah, I’ll go over there and see what’s real fast. The super interesting cuz I don’t want to just glaze over it and maybe we’ll talk about it next break. Campaign is interesting. Yeah, he he’s a little a little I’m a little intrigued when you talk about campaign. Yeah, we’ll break that down when we come right back to Sackown Sports Drive, guys. This is the story of the one. Everybody’s I’m telling you, everybody’s trying to get their seats already, man. Hey, they trying to get seats for the big game coming up. This is interesting to me. Jason Kid talking about how he plans to handle Cooper flag in summer league. U he said, “I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts.” And apparently this is something similar to what he did when he had Giannis as a first round pick in 2013 when Giannis was I don’t know 11 years old or whatever he was. Uh Jason Kit says being able to run the show, being able to play the two, play the three. So it looks like because you know they they have a crowded front court do the Mavs. Uh they want to see if Cooper Flag can can play it all in the back court. So that’s a a little experiment they got going on here at summer league. Yeah. Yeah. It’s uh you know, he’s probably the the the guy with the most eyes on him. This uh Mhm. this uh Dude, why is your YouTube is your YouTube going out on your internet? Saying no signal on you. Oh, yeah. I just saw it. Yeah. Yeah. You see that? All right. Sorry about that. No, he all all eyes will be on Cooper flag, man. It’s, you know, and it it’s it’s one of those things where I remember being here for Victor Wimbeyama’s first uh summer league game and it was a zoo in here and he struggled early and then some people oh he might be a bust and every and so these guys come in with a lot of pressure. You you could you could imagine Cooper Flag wants to put on the show and have a solid game tonight, but you got to remember these guys are rookies. You know, I was looking at some of the highlights in some of the film of that first game and you know, you had Fears out there. You also had Who’s the one kid uh that the Pelicans jumped up and uh traded? Yeah, Derek Queen. And you know, he struggled a little bit. And he said after the game, I was reading his quotes. He’s like, “I’m looking to redeem myself next game. I I know it’s 82 games in the season. and there’ll be plenty of time, but I’m sure Twitter and Instagram are lighting me up right now and everything. And I’m like, that’s the pressure that these guys live under. You know, it’s like they want to come out here and do a bang up job. So, I would imagine Cooper, you know, he has some weight on his shoulders today. By the way, as you pointed out, Draps, apologies uh for some of the things going on with our YouTube right now. We actually have an engineer working on it right as we speak, so we’ll get that uh straightened out. But just uh yeah, thanks for your patience. Uh on the YouTube, who are the players other than guys on the Kings that you’re and Cooper flag that you’re looking forward to seeing seeing the most? Don’t tell me Bronnie. No, I mean I I don’t mind watching Bronnie, but you know, to me, man, I wanted to see the matchup tonight. Dylan Harper and uh BJO, but both those guys are out tonight. I wanted to see the number two versus number three picks. And so, you know, not being able to see those guys uh tonight, uh I I want to see the Duke products, you know, Canuppo and and uh Malawatch, you know, I want to see them as well. But, you know, that that edge come Ace Bailey, too. I got to I got to take a look at Ace Bailey. I mean, the dude’s a phenomenal talent, skilled offensive player, you know, unlike last year and last year’s class is going to be fine, but there wasn’t a whole lot we knew about these rookies. like we weren’t familiar with Alex Sar’s game, Rhys’s game, if you will. We kind of know these guys and and it’s exciting. So, I I want to see some of these young rookies for sure. So, how do you know how Jeremiah Fears did? I guess you weren’t there yet, were you? You weren’t able to see him play. I was I was standing out in the uh the vegetable vegetable, whatever it’s called. You know, the vegetables, right? There’s some vegetables out there as well, also. No, I got I got some numbers right here for you, Whitey. Final score, uh, Timberwolves 98, Pelicans 91, Fierce four of 12 shooting, 14 points, seven turnovers. Derek Queen 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven turnovers. Queen was five of nine. Jeremiah Fear is four of 12 from the field. Yeah, I know New Orleans gave up an unprotected next year to move up and a lot of people and I’m with them say that was idiotic. I don’t know why they did that, but they do have two high picks on the roster this year. So, how do you think drapes, and it’s hard to tell at this point, but how do you think the Kings right now, forget the best of the West, how do the Kings right now figure to stack up against the rest of the West, you know, Portland uh and Dallas and Utah and teams of that ilk? That’s a great question because I I think we’ll be better than Utah. I think we’ll be better than Portland also. Yeah. I I mean, you know, Portland got some nice young talent coming up, you know, uh but they got some more agent guys, Drew Holiday, and what are what are they going to do with Jeremy Grant, too? You know, he’s still on that roster. So, I think they got some issues. Um I think we’ll be better than Phoenix. So, that’s three teams right there. I I have the Kings in a cluster that includes Memphis, that includes Dallas. you know, and I might even throw the Timberwolves in there. I’m telling you, I know the Timberwolves are fantastic, you know, but they were a six seed and they lost Nikquil Alexander Walker, who’s a big performer for them, especially in the postseason. How do they is Rob Dillingham ready to take that leap? You know, can he take that step? You know, so I’m not 100% sold that Minnesota all of a sudden is going to be, you know, this juggernaut in the Western Conference. I think they have some question marks as well. So, I I got the Kings and I might even throw Golden State in there, too. Really? Yeah, I might. I You know me, I’m just being a hater partially, but you know, it’s I don’t know. Jimmy Butler’s getting up there. Steph’s getting up there. Draymond, you know, it’s I don’t know. I I I think the jury is still out on them because, you know, they’re going to end up with either Giannis or LeBron this year. Oh, shoot. Golden State. That’s what they’re waiting for, right? That’s why they haven’t done any moves. They there’s waiting for that big fish out there. Can you imagine if LeBron decided to go to Golden State to play with Steph? Oh my gosh, that would be, you know, and and not only that, Whitey, think about it like this. If LeBron went to Golden State, that might hurt Steph’s legacy. Really? Because now you got you had Kevin Durant, now LeBron James. It’s like, damn, dude. Every year you you always getting some help. You know what I mean? Like, but he got that one by himself or, you know, with with pool and he got and I’ll give him credit for the first one, too. I I’ll give him some credit for the first one as well. But dude, if they if LeBron went there and they happen to win a championship, I don’t know like how much does that affect LeBron’s legacy? Oh, now he got five. Jordan said, “Nah, man. You went to play with Steph.” Same thing with Steph. I I don’t know. Yeah. You know what your friend Ian Begley thinks? Or at least this is what he said today on his Oh, yeah. What’ he say? Yeah. He said, you know, he asked this question, “Where’s LeBron going to be beginning of the year?” And we all said, “Well, he’s going to be with the Lakers the beginning of the year, but end of the year, Ian Begley said Cleveland.” He thinks that’s where he’s gonna end really at some point. Yeah. He thinks third round in Cleveland. Wrap it up in Cleveland. Yeah. I don’t see that. You could see it. I don’t know about this year, but you know, like retire like his final season in Cleveland whenever he’s ready to to wrap it up. Yeah. Yeah, I’m with you on that. I I could see that like one last year, you know, because clearly he has an affinity for Cleveland. And so, yeah, I could see that. I just LeBron just just ride off into the sunset, big fella. Don’t be team hopping, you know, made your millions. You I I looked at some numbers. LeBron’s made coast to 600 million just from basketball salary. Just from basketball sal. Draper money. That’s Draper endorsement money. Yeah. Yeah. Please, man. I’m trying to get $200 endorsement now, man. Mercedes, man. I need Jim Boy’s tacos. I was gonna say that’s Jimbo money for Draper. Uh maybe LeBron goes back to Cleveland for his final campaign. And speaking of campaign, a look at his potential fit here in Sacramento is coming up with the drive guys on Sacktown Sports next. Drivers who switch and save with Progressive could save hundreds. With that kind of money, you could go big time on a fancy water bottle with ultra titanium alloy metal. You’re not sure why you need all that? I mean, it just holds water. Look at these guys. What’s up with you, big fella? What’s up with you, big perm? What y’all up to, man? been in business since 81 A+ Better Business Bureau, but it is hot. We are in those Sacramento hot months. I want to focus on them being your second opinion partner. What does that mean? Maybe you’ve got somebody you’re working with or you’ve worked with in the past in the HVAC world. Guess what? They want to give you a second opinion. How much does it cost? Nothing. Nothing. You call them up and say, “Hey, can I get a second opinion on this deal?” They come out and they either say, “Wow, that’s a great deal. You should feel better about that.” Or they say, “We can beat that price.” And usually they’re going to beat it by a lot. Guess what? You just saved money and it didn’t cost you anything to find out. You know, there’s so much talk now speculation uh about players coming to the Kings. We got a a name that wants to come to the Kings that we’ll get to. But first, Raes, I know you have a special guest with you. You know, here’s the thing. Wh when we back in Sacramento, this dude always bumr rushes the show. Yeah. Can you hear me, Drapes? Looks like Drapes can’t hear me. I apologize. Can you hear me? It looks like we have a familiar face with us, but uh Hal Draper’s naughty. Either he can’t hear me or I can’t hear him. So, we will apologies for that. We will get that squared away as soon as we can. And I’ll tell you about the player that Kyle Draper said earlier today on the show. Um, would like to become a member of the Sacramento Kings. I have no idea whether the Kings have any interest in this person. Um, but we’re talking about campaign. How exactly Kyle knows that. I’m not sure. We will get him back on with us as quickly as we can uh to explain that. But it looks like campaign, longtime veteran NBA player. I’m laughing here because it looks like the highf flyers who Drapes has uh with him in Vegas. We’re just not able to hear him yet. But yeah, um campaign played 10 years in the NBA, was with the Knicks last year, year before that was with Philly and Milwaukee, spent what about five years with Phoenix. Um according to a report, and the report is from Kyle Draper campaign has let it be known that he would not mind being a member of the Sacramento Kings. Um I know That’s not a earthshattering move, but I would love that for a couple reasons. One, if he came here, obviously he’d be a backup point guard. And you know, one of the things we’ve heard is that um the Kings may have interest in Russell Westbrook as a backup point guard. I don’t care for that fit. I would much me personally much rather have campaign who is a more dependable, less erratic player. Certainly doesn’t have the upside of Russell Katie, can you hear me? I can hear you highly, but I can’t hear Kevin Whitey Gleon now. Yeah, everything went down. We don’t even feed Kings are interested in campaign, but campaign apparently has interest in becoming a Sacramento king. Right now, of course, uh, no room at the end. The Kings just have far too many. Hold your horses. Hold your horses. Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? On the roster. Too many guards, period. So, something to keep an eye on those. We’re also keeping an eye, of course, on what goes on with Jonathan Kuminga at Summer League. Um, are the Kings still in on Jonathan Kuminga? It doesn’t look like it. Can we put that to bed? Uh, Drapes told us a few moments ago, he said, “Well, we can’t put it to bed, but it’s napping on the couch, so doesn’t look like there’s much going on there. All right, you got me, Jay. But I can’t hear Whitey right now. Uh, summer league talks of the Kings maybe things. All right, there’s Whitey. Appears most likely is Kaming is going to return to the Warriors for this year. And if he stays with the Warriors this year, then he would become a free. Maybe the Kings would take a run at him at that point a year from now. If that’s the route that he goes and he becomes a a free agent. Now, speaking of point guards, one of the things to keep an eye on, of course, at summer league is Deon Carter. Devin Carter, who has been named one of the players to watch at summer league by John Hollinger in the athletic. Um it’s really important not only for the Kings but for Devin Carter to show that he can play point and Devin Carter does a lot of things well and he uh he’s a very tenacious defender but he’s only he’s not a very tall player and today in the NBA we’re seeing uh teams are not as enamored of the smaller players even if they’re good shooters unless they can do other things. So, if Devin Carter can show not just the Kings, but if he can show show the rest of the NBA that he can be a legitimate point guard, even if just a, you know, legitimate uh combo guard, that would go a long ways towards securing a a longer NBA future for him. For him, as as it does for so many players, it’s probably going to come down to can you make a jump shot. uh he may have enough in his bag otherwise where if he’s not a reliable shooter going forward, he still can help you defensively, but in today’s NBA um if you’re an offg guard, pretty much got to be able to shoot the ball well. So that’s that’s a work in progress for Devin Carter, but we’ll get to see starting well just about half hour from now how he’s progressing as a point guard. That’d be great for the Kings if Devin Carter can play backup point. The trick of it is though, you know, you still apparently from what we’re hearing, the Kings still think that they need to bring in a backup point guard. That’s why we’re just talking about campaign. Um, but you’re not going to know enough about Devin Carter in a handful of summer league games to be able to say, “Oh, yes, there you go. We’ve got our backup point guard.” But at least he can uh he can get you thinking that way if he plays well here at summer league. And uh by all accounts, he’s played very well taking charge of this offense. Uh there’s also a chance that other teams are looking at Devin Carter. That is speculation on my part. If Devin Carter is one of the players that the Kings floated to the Warriors, um maybe the words would have more interest if Devin Carter can show that he’s a little more versatile. Maybe we’ll get to see if he’s a little more versatile. But again, we don’t know if anything’s going on with the Kings and Devin Carter and Kuminga. It does look like the Kings are going to be in a position where they’re going to have to say thanks for everything to at least a guard. Who that is, I don’t know. I think we know who the most likely candidates are. And if Devin Carter can come in and play well uh at the uh point guard position here uh during summer league, that would go a long ways towards showing the team I can do a lot of things. I’m even more versatile than you thought and maybe he’d be more likely uh to stick around. But again, we were talking about point guards because according to Kyle Draper today on the drive, guys, campaign has expressed an interest in playing for the Sacramento Kings. So, something to keep an eye on. Guy has been in the league since 201. He was uh picked by Oklahoma City uh way back when. Um so, that’s interesting. And it’s also interesting from the standpoint of you got a guy who’s an accomplished player who apparently is expressing an interest in playing for the Kings, which doesn’t happen very often. Uh so we’ll have more from Summer League. Hopefully we’ll have drapes for you and a special guest when we come right back. Uh thanks for being with us today. You know, we got drapes in Vegas. Uh and we were talking about campaign. We lost drapes. Campy says, “Ever since campaign was mentioned, the show has had difficulties.” I don’t think we can blame that on campaign Jay. It’s a cold blood man. Cam ain’t did nothing to us. He didn’t do anything. He haven’t done anything and it’s a bystander. Yeah. So, Drapes is on his way to the arena. Is that right? Yeah. He’s uh packing up the equipment and he is getting ready to him and HT are heading up to uh Cox, right? They’re playing at the Cox tonight. Let me make sure. Yeah, Cox Pavilion. So, they’re going up that way right now. So, he’s getting ready to call in so he can speak to the campaign information that you’ve uh Yes. you expanded on last segment and then we’ll wish him well. I did expand on that quite a bit. I did. Yes. Yeah. Well, Drapes is the one that had the information. Um so, we want to bring you the latest on that and unfortunately we weren’t able to get to the to the highf flyier, but um that’s too bad. I always uh welcome any opportunity to talk to the flyer. Hopefully, we can get him on again here at some point. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Come on now. We guess what? We have his phone number. Yeah. So, we always know where the highf flyers going to be at any point in time. Uh we we can connect with him and so uh we’ll try to get him in his Vegas state of mind here the next uh couple of days or tomorrow and moving into next week. But uh if not, we know where to find him, man. Whitey. Right. Right. And I know you know people make jokes and I I I make jokes myself, but we do have uh a very very very very competent very good engineer who’s working on things. Oh, yeah. Buster moves, man. He actually changed the whole damn computer in in a break. 5 minutes. How about that? Right. With his eyes closed, did he? Yeah. Blindfold. D Brown onehanded. Yeah. With his shoelaces tied together and a butter knife. And he had no problem with it whatsoever. That’s what we do around. No problem. While we wait to hear from from Drapes, Jay, can I ask you about the something you sent me today that you were furious about? Major League Baseball batting averages. Jay sent, you know, Jay being the producer that he is, sends Drapes and I a lot of information on a lot of different things during the day. And sometimes he comments on it, sometimes he doesn’t. and he was furious about this report today that right now Will Smith who’s hitting 326 according to this report Will Smith is the only guy from the Dodgers uh not to get jiggy with it he’s the only guy in the National League with a batting average over 300 now some people say well Akuna is hitting over 300 but I don’t know if he has enough apps to qualify whether he is or not Jay that that made you furious yeah it did man because you know how this goes whitey I I always talk about hitting above your weight. That was one of the things that uh scouts always said, you got to at least be able to hit your weight, you know. Yeah. And I I just said that to our uh expanded family to drive guys Ramsay who had an opportunity to talk to Denzel Clark a couple of days ago at the ballpark and he said that uh Ramsay said that Denzel Clark told him it is starting to slow down for him now in the big leagues and he is able to uh you know have better at bats, better quality at bats. And so me and Ramsey were going back and forth to peel back the curtain and I was like man you got to at least hit your weight. And so it’s interesting because I had looked at Denzel Clark’s stats maybe about four days prior to that. He’s listed at 220 the day of when I looked. He was hitting 200 on the nose. Then he had a decent series. Yeah. Uh especially last couple of bats against the Giants and he’s hitting 207 at last time I looked. He not even hitting his weight. That’s no that’s no good. But you know Jay, the analytics guys will tell you batting averageing average. It’s all about your on base percentage angle velocity launch angle OBP ops OPS plus. I get it. I get it. I mean yeah I understand it. It’s put it this way. And Freddy Freeman is hitting 299. I don’t know if Will Smith has enough abs also to register. Uh because when you look at the official st uh stats and standings and and ML and uh batting average leaders, Will Smith is not even listed yet. Freddy Freeman is is still leading the NL at 299. Interesting. So officially, there’s not even an NL player, not one who’s hitting above 300. That is amazing. It is. That is amazing. Even more amazing than that to me is the fact that you look at batting average right now baseball. Aaron Judge’s first 360. Yeah. Hitting 335. This is MLB.com. They have him second in the majors in batting. Jacob Wilson, man. Doing it all, man. Throwback if you can say throwback type of player. Contact guy. Goes with the pitch, goes with the ball. Wherever you throw it, I’mma go that way with it. You know, we see a lot of guys talk about launch angle and velocity and all these different aspects of the game. A lot of that has to do with the your swing and, you know, how how you approach the your abs and your bats. But Jacob Wilson is one of those guys where, you know, two strikes, you shorten up on the bat a little bit, you crouch down a little bit, drop down a half of an inch in your kneecap, the space, the angle. And so it it you can see of course being as a father played for a long time in the MLB. You can definitely tell he has been seasoned. He is well mature inside the box and it it’s proven even though he is a young player in the league. You can definitely tell he’s comfortable with the bat in his hand. Whatever you want to call it. I think scouts would say he’s got that hit tool uh contact ability, hand eye. I bet he’s a great pickle ball player. I mean, he’s just got that ability to make contact and it really stands out now in an era in which, as you’ve said, Jay, there it seems like that is less and less emphasized and he’s an outstanding outstanding contact guy uh as a rookie shortstop starting in the All-Star game. So, that’s been one of the things and you know, I have not been the biggest supporter of some of the things going on with the athletics, but as far as what’s going on on the field, Jacob Wilson has just been a joy uh to watch. Did you happen to see, by the way, a Kuna, two home runs he hit last night? He had one that they couldn’t measure. Yeah, Ron is balling. Yeah, he he’s doing his thing. Who Who’s the uh the player we play allegedly at 600? I can’t remember who was 600 feet, 580 ft or something. Was it Maris? Maris and Manel, I think it was someone that we were talking about on the show and someone was like, “Oh, yeah, was it Garrick?” Um, or was it Maris? It might have been Maris or it might have been Mickey Manel. Okay. Yeah. Somebody that allegedly hit a ball 600 feet or something. We’re like, “Come on, Akunia.” I I bought it. You and Drapes were the ones that couldn’t believe it. No. No way. No. 600 feet. Auna literally hit the ball 400 plus feet. Yeah. Not even It wasn’t even question. Yeah. I guess without a grand stand there, it’s more difficult for them to triangulate, you know, where it lands and they just like it went so far over the clubhouse and everything. It’s like, yeah, we don’t know how far that went. Yeah, we can’t even. But then later he hit one to right field that that was way out of the strike. Was it a foot out of the strike zone? Hit it over the fence in right field, Jay. So, yeah, he’s doing his thing. He’s uh he’s a beast. We know we’ve lost him to a few uh injuries throughout his young career, but he he’s a guy that’s going to be cuz he can hit. He he he can hit, he can run, he plays D. He’s a 52 type of guy. Yeah. Bottom of the hour, we’re going to talk about a piece that was in the B today about what Sacramento needs to get done if the city wants to be a player in Major League Baseball’s expansion race. So, we will look at that. the A’s in terms of what Sacramento needs to do to actually have a shot at landing a a team full-time. That’s coming up bottom of the hour. Uh as for right now, uh back to the Kings and uh we’re trying to get Drapes. I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get Drapes, but Jay, I know that you when it comes to campaign, who according to Kyle Draper has expressed some interest in coming here, you like that idea too, right? I like the idea of campaign. It doesn’t transform your roster or anything, but I like it and I think you like it too. Yeah. Yeah. I I’m I’m intrigued by campaign. You said something during the break that I think is spot on. I’m a more traditional point guard type of guy. I like my guy my point guard to dish first, shoot second. I know that’s not the league. I know, you know, you got to be able to hit the three, the long ball. Understand that. Campaign, and you said this, campaign is probably as close as a traditional point guard is possible in the league right now. He’s Allah. And I always go back to Rondo because I remember Rondo coming here for a year and leading the league in assist. He’s a pass, first, shoot, second type of guy. He’s a hustle guy. He is a play defense guy. You know, he kind of does it all. Jose Alvarado, we heard Dennis Shruder just talk about it a couple of couple of days ago in the press conference. He does the little things. He definitely does the little things and it’s a reason why he’s stuck in the league. He uh he brings it every single day. Yeah. He’s got that funky looking left hand. Yeah. South out. Yeah, he uh signed with the Knicks about a year ago, played last season for them, 72 games, started five games, and he shot 36% from the three-point line. The year before that, he was at 39%, uh 36%, 34%, 44%, 52%. Really good three-point shooter. Um, so I don’t know that if he brings the level of defense that, um, Scott Perry and Doug Christie have said that they’re looking for from players they bring in now. But, um, he would give you, I think, a lot of the things that you might get from Taius Jones at maybe even a fraction of that cost. And Taius Jones wasn’t going to be expensive. And maybe he doesn’t give you a lot of defensive intensity, but a guy who’s played in a lot of playoff games, Jay. There’s something to be said for that in terms of uh helping you build your culture. You know what? I hadn’t had an opportunity to check that. Do you have that pulled up? How many postseason games has he played in or been a part of on the squad? Let me check this here. Um basketball reference playoff series. My goodness. How many playoff games? Uh, seven years, 16 series. Okay. 72 playoff games. Oh, yeah. He’s been in the He’s been in the thick of things, man. Yeah. He’s been in the Western uh, let’s see, uh, first round, first round. Anyway, it’s right here. Been in the finals, Eastern Conference finals, Western Conference Finals. Got a lot a lot of uh, postseason experience because a steady hand like that is something that good teams need. Okay, I know. Well, the Kings aren’t close to being a team that’s going to be in the playoffs, but if you’re trying to build that culture, a point guard who’s played in the biggest games you can imagine, he can’t hurt when you’re trying to build that with and show young players how it’s done. Let me cross reference. Did he play under Scott Perry at all? Cuz he was in New York for a quick minute, right? Yeah, he was only in New York last year. Okay. All right. Yeah. Couple years. Chicago Phoenix for a long time then feeling then like I say the Knicks picked him up about about a year ago. So again, I know this is not like a guy who’s gonna wow, the Kings now are going to be contenders, but me personally, if Campaign came here, I would feel like, oh, that’s pretty solid. I like that. As opposed to if Russ came here, nothing against Russ, but Jay, I would be like, oh, no, I would cover my eyes if if it were Russ. I don’t understand the Russ fit. The campaign fit to me is just more sensible. Maybe the Kings aren’t good enough to be looking at things in terms of whether they’re sensible or not, but to me that would be a sensible pickup. Yeah, I’m with you. I I I think like again I I like what campaign brings to the table and I think one of the things he’s going to do and I don’t necessarily think you need Dennis Shruder to be pushed this way, but he’s going to push the squad. He’s going to push the back court to be better. And I think he just he’s one of those guys and I I don’t know if it was you or Drapes or someone who has joined the show. He brings the intensity level up just a little bit, you know, and through his play. He’s not the type of guy and I, you know, I I don’t know if he’s a get in your face at any point type of guy cuz I haven’t followed his career enough every single night to be like, is Cam in people’s face? But he definitely in is intensity when he’s on the floor. Yeah, he brings it on the floor. I’m interested. You don’t last 10 years in the NBA playing a lot of playoff games as a point guard by being meek to your point. Maybe he doesn’t get in everybody’s grill, but he’s not. I’m sure he’s, you know, he’s not in there. Well, I don’t know. Do you want the ball? So, I’m sure he’s got a level of toughness that that would help. Zack Lavine is at the American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe. Yesterday, he talked to, among other people, Monty Pool from NBC Sports Bay Area. Had some interesting things to say. Um, a lot of generic things that to me speaks to how cautious a guy like Zack Lavine is when discussing what happened with the Kings last year. But some of the things he said were interesting. He said he was asked about um some of the changes for the Kings and and how they maximize the talent they do have. And he said from the beginning it’s just a commitment from day one of training camp. It’s always good being able to have a full connection offseason training camp if stuff happens in the middle of the season. You got to be pros and play with it, but I’m looking forward to start starting from ground zero. And as I said earlier, that’s an interesting choice of words. Um, you know, ground zero can mean a starting point. Ground zero can also mean that’s where a nuclear device went off. And it’s not that anything nuclear went off for the Kings last year, but there was a lot of change, a lot of uh upheaval. I think in some ways Kings fans feel like poof was ground zero last year with all the changes, but Zack Lavine said, “I was there for the last 30 games of it. Got traded there before the All-Star break after they had all the coaching changes.” That’s part of the business. We got to learn how to deal with that and that’s what the organization is going to do to put themselves in the best position. So, I’m looking forward to a full camp had a full off season, it sounds to me. And I maybe um maybe this is just opinion. Maybe I’m maybe I’m going beyond the evidence, but it sounds to me like guys like Zack Lavine and Demard Rosen have talked with Scott Perry and they’ve heard the things they need to hear, but after what they went through last year as Kings fans can relate, uh I think they they just need to wait and see what it’s going to be like. You know, when Zack Lavine talks about we got to be professional about it. When Demar Rosen talks about I’ve never been through anything like that. Yeah, I think um yeah, they’re hearing the right things. It’s like, okay, that’s great, but I’m going to need to see it. Right now, we I don’t think we’re going to see him, but we’re going to hear from the streets of Las Vegas. Scott Draper, what’s up, Drapes? Oh, man. It’s a buzz out here right now, man. I just uh mosy my way into the building where the Kings are about to play. The squad is warming up. had a walk through uh earlier, a shoot around at about 2:30 and the boys looking ready, man. I’m I’m buzzed right now, Mike. Like, I’m excited that basketball is back here in Sacramento for us, man. We get to watch our king. Drapes, what can you tell us about campaign and the Kings? Well, this is what I was I was talking to a source earlier today when I got here to summer league and you know I was told that campaign does have interest in coming to Sacramento at potentially check I got it on on the roster now and you know I said to my source I’m saying well who’s our second point guard they’re like that’s a good point and so you know there is some interest there but you know like we’ve been talking about right it we have such the blood of guards. There’s some other areas that we need to fill before that. But, you know, you’re talking about a veteran who’s played on some winning teams on some teams that have advanced far in the playoffs, whether it’s Phoenix, whether it’s New York, you know, Milwaukee, like, so he’s a he’s a solid NBA veteran that could come in and help you. But I feel like as of right now with the roster, the Kings just don’t have a need for that right now. Right. Here’s the thing I like about him, Drake. Well, two things. We know he can shoot. And also, you talked about how many good teams he’s been on. He’s played in 16 playoff series. He’s played in 72 playoff games over seven years. That’s impressive, right? It’s like everywhere he goes, you know, they’re in the mix. Uhhuh. You know, and so you could definitely do worse. I mean, this is a guy that, you know, and and the thing about campaign, he worked on his jump shot. He was nearly out of the league a few years ago. He worked on his jump shot, became a solid three-point shooter out there in Phoenix, and now, you know, I I think he’s viewed as a solid backup, but it just doesn’t make sense for Sacramento at that. But there is some interest there from his side of things. Yeah, I you know, I I know that uh Russell Westbrook has a lot of fans out there and he should. He’s a Hall of Famer. Me personally, I would feel better about campaign than Russell Westbrook, but from what the your source said, maybe campaign would think, oh, there’s room for both of us here. There’s not right now, but in his mind, he would be okay with being the third guard. That’s interesting. Yeah. And let me ask you this though, from a fit standpoint, would you think Champagne’s a slightly better fit with Russ or or No, like just from strictly basketball, I don’t know about locker room stuff, culture stuff in terms of the way he plays versus Westbrook. How do you how do you view that? I think he’s a more uh steady um consistent point guard. I think he’s proven that. Obviously, you know, Russ brings other things to the equation about effort and intensity. So, it’s just a matter of whoever’s making the decisions what they value most. But from a basketball standpoint, to me, campaign for a guy who wants to be your third point guard, he’s a rock solid. And as Jay and I were saying, you know, there there are very few of these traditional point guards, and he’s about as close as you can get in today’s NBA. Yeah. And I wonder how much, you know, of of Devin Carter at point, you know, depending on how it goes, depend, you know, can impact, you know, whether Westbrook is brought on board, whether a campaign, you know, they may view Devin Carter as their second or third point guard. Yeah. You know, depending on how this goes at summer league. So, but yeah, I was told uh, you know, campaign, you know, uh, would have some interest in Sacramento for sure. So, then you went right to Scott, right, to tell him. Exactly. says, “Scott, I got got somebody. Nobody’s talking about this guy. I got And you can get him, Scott. You can get him.” No. So, as we get ready to start, and I know you got to go here pretty soon, but what are what we’ve talked about it for a few days now. What are you looking forward to seeing the most? What do you need to see from the Kings tonight? I I I need to see first of all the guys who played last year, the Isaac Jones, the Devin Carters to look like they were NBA players. You know what I mean? Don’t come out here, seven turnovers, eight turnovers, out of control. Look like they’re the best players on the floor. Also, when it comes to a guy like Meek, I was just talking to somebody and they they reiterated what we’ve been talking about here about his playmaking and ball handling. And so, I want to see, you know, how he does under, you know, the the the lights here at summer league and some of the pressure at summer league. Do they run him at one as a backup one, let’s say? And so, I I want to see that. And then Maxim Reno, I want to see him actually on the defensive end. I I you know I think we know what he can do offensively from his time in Stanford. Stretch the floor, make some plays, but can he be a shot blocker, a rim protector defensively? I want to see that. Two questions here. Drapes. Uh maybe you know the answers, maybe you don’t. From Kings Fan Dan, what is Drape’s cut of the contract if Payne signs? And also Eric Q wants to know, uh what’s the starting lineup today? And I don’t know if you have that information. Um, I don’t have the information fully. Um, yeah, I I would only be guessing, but I I’ll say this. From what I was told from some of the practices, the second unit yesterday got after it and kicked the first unit’s butt. Wow. Like, yeah. Yeah. The Cardwells of the world, Isaiah Crawford’s of the world. Like, those guys really put on the show yesterday. So, we’ll see, man. We’ll see. I’m not sure you know what the starting lineup is. However, okay. And no comment on your cut of the deal if campaign. I got a finders fee. How about that? Yeah. Yeah. Drapes, tell us a little bit about Cardwell because, you know, for a guy that doesn’t have much offensive game. There’s a lot of fans around here are a little bit more excited than I thought they’d be for someone who wasn’t drafted. Well, he’s an energy guy, you know. I mean, he’s he’s an energy guy, a talker out there defensively. Uh, I actually like what I’m hearing about him. He’s a guy that just knows his way around the basketball court, makes an impact, whether it’s on, you know, defensively, block his shots, being physical. So, I I think the team, the organization is high on him to be honest with you. Not saying he’s gonna be on the roster and playing 20 games uh throughout the season, but you know, he could be a guy sort of like a Isaac Jones kind of find where, you know, later in the season or even next season, you know, he he his contract gets converted to a a real one. How disappointed was the highf flyer that we weren’t able to get him on? You must have had to console him for Yeah, he he stormed off. He stormed off, man. Yeah, he stormed off. I haven’t even seen him since then. I gotta go in here and find him now, but uh maybe tomorrow he’ll join us. All right, Drapes. We look forward to that. Thanks. Enjoy the games tonight. All right, talk to you guys. Yeah, Kyle Draper from Summer League where the Kings get ready to start summer league. I got to admit, Jay, I know it’s summer league and earlier we talked about how, you know, summer league. Okay, it’s interesting. I’m getting a little excited. I just I’m looking forward to actually seeing it. Okay, you got seven minutes, brother. You got your NBA TV set up in there ready to go. C Drapes usually sitting over there. He’s the one that sets it up. So, I got to get busy on that. I got just got baseball everywhere. Okay. I love baseball, but yeah, I got to get some basketball. No doubt. No doubt. What do you think of of uh Cardwell? Anything? Any opinion? Uh nothing yet. I I’ve seen him play a handful of times. Yeah. So, you know, I don’t really have too much on him. A really good team in college. Yeah, he was. He was. Definitely was. Uh, it’s one of those things where I, you know, and no disrespect to the fans, there are a lot of fans who believe they know everything about every player. I’m not going to get up here and sugar coat it. I’ve I’ve only seen him play a handful of times. Not enough to form an opinion. Uh, and I haven’t had the opportunity to go to to any of the practices this past week. So, yeah. TBD. Yeah. The thing I’m interested in the most is about him is a lot of people think he’s a guy that may have a NBA career. He has virtually, according to, you know, scouts has virtually no offensive game. Yeah. Okay. And I’m not saying that to criticize him. So, if you’re going to carve out a career, people think he could still be a player when you don’t have an offensive game. He must be really good at everything else that bigs that you need your bigs to do. Well, first thing first is we know this. He’s big. Yeah. He’s listed at what? 71 at one point in time and it’s I mean I’ve seen and you know how this goes 611 7 foot 71 I’ve seen a few different uh discrepancies of how he’s listed but he’s a big body no doubt about that. Uh it seems like he is a hustle guy. It also seems as if and your guy Coach Christie loves that. Oh yeah, for sure. And he’s kind of in your face, you know, strong men so to say. Uh, I I’ve I’ve heard and I’ve read analysis that he plays with a passion. I’ve heard that he doesn’t shy away from contact. I’ve heard he’s more a centerpiece on your board. You know, you put him in the middle, play a little zone, and he’ll go get it for you. Uh, so it just depends. You know, one thing about this game more or less now, you have to be able to be, you know, you got to do something on offensive side these days. Right. Gone are the days of where you can just kind of come in Bill Lambir, you know, come in there, clothesline a few guys, and be out of Dennis Rodman. Well, Ramen Ramen did a lot of Ben Wallace. Yeah, Ben Wallace. Is is Beef Stew that guy now? Like Beef Stew’s kind of that, you know, who’s kind of almost that guy as Draymond except he brings you some playmaking and he will make more talented. Yeah. Yeah. He he and the one thing he can do is handle the rock. He can handle the basketball. He’ll bring it up. They run a lot through him, you know, great pick and roll. He’s a Draymond is I don’t want to say is an underrated passer, but I don’t think he because of other things in his game is they overshadowed the fact that he’s a good he’s a good passer. Maybe a great passer actually. Um yeah, I mean sometimes he tries to do a little too much, but yeah, he does a really good job. Well, you know, they both from Michigan, baby. Yeah. Yeah. You know, that’s uh that’s kind of what uh Mike Brown and Jr were trying to do with Domas. They brought some of that Warrior offense in here and and Domas has done some of the stuff that uh Draymond did. I know we’re Kings fans don’t want to hear about that. They don’t want to have anything to do with Draymond, but that’s uh the fact of the matter. When we come back, here’s what Sacramento really needs to get into Major League Baseball uh for good. This is what Sack needs next on Sack Town Sports. You’re not at your house. You’re at a lavish seaside estate. You’re not walking the dog. You’re hunting for clues in an Agatha Christie mystery. How about this on the the chatau here from Ron Johnson? Got money on the Kings to Is it? Yeah, Ron. No, it was, you know, want to give him a call. Yeah, I know. I got you. I got money on the Kings to win the summer chip. He says 8,000 to one odds. That’s some sweet action. I know. I thought Drape said yesterday it was 80 to1. Yeah, it depends on how the how it’s listed in what casino. It’s pretty much the same same thing. 80 to18,0001. And I uh I’m interested. Let’s just say that. Give your cousin a call. Yeah. How you? Yeah. Uh let’s see. Ron Johnson says, “Go Kings DC for summer league MVP.” Oo, I’m going Mason Jones. Yeah, he’s going to get some shots up. Oh, no. No doubt about it. And I think he is he’s in the middle of trying to figure out where he fits next. Does he stick in Stockton? You know, is he and uh I can’t remember who who put that. Was it Akis? Yeah. Said it yesterday. He can’t play on a two-way again this year. So, they’re going to have to make a decision. The Kings are going to have to make a decision on him. And if not, he may be playing for a spot or a role on another team, another organization. And we seen it. I I I got to see it two, three times last year and a couple times in the playoffs. Man, he uh he’s a baller and he’s definitely not the faint of heart of getting it up. And Summer League, he’s going to have plenty time unless they want to see some other guys and they feel like they know what he, you know, what he can do. But I think he he’s the type of guy in summer league that can go for 30 a game. Yeah. Well, I know we sat next to each other when we went and saw the Stockton Kings play. Um who’ they play? It was the Heats uh G-League team. Yeah. I don’t remember. But I mean, yeah, that the Kings were It’s no wonder they won the championship. Mason Jones was he was dominant. He was. Yeah, he he definitely was. And Isaac Jones, too. You could definitely see those two guys are like, “Yeah, they’re they’re NBA players.” You know, they may be at the back of the bench or the end of the bench and maybe need an opportunity somewhere, but they had separated themselves. The same thing that I like to see in summer league is get in there, separate yourself, and show that you cut from a different cloth. Mason Jones was he ran the floor. Both teams you could see he’s like, “Yeah, he’s different. He a little different than everybody out here.” And and I got that feeling from Isaac Jones as well. It looks like starting for the Kings here. Okay. Who you got? Whitey, I’m up here. Devin Carter’s out there. It looks like that’s Maxim Reno, is it not? It looks like it. We’re going with the all white. And I think that’s Ne Clifford. Okay. Is that Isaac Jones with his back to us? That’s Isaac Jones number three with his back. That’s Mason. Yeah. So Mason, Devin Carter, Isaac Jones with some goggles. Is that Mason Jones with I mean, excuse me. Isaac Jones with the goggles on, baby. Is it got the He’s got the SK the snow patrols. What does it got on his face? Oh, I’m not sure what that is. It says the goggles or is that a protector? Yeah. What is that? A a breathing breathing tape. I can’t see what that is on his face yet. They haven’t zoomed in on it. Is that Maxine Reno boxing out there? Oh, Orlando. Orlando’s leading three to nothing. It’s over. This is the worst summer league ever. comes down, nails a three. Yeah. Deon Carter brings it. Yeah, it is. Yeah. Dribble ahead. DO. Yes, sir. Clifford Jones for I told you MVP. He’s the MVP of the summer league. Guaranteed. Mark it down now. Mason Jones is the MVP of the summer league and the Kings are winning. I’m telling you. 80 to1. Get to it before this game is over with. You know how you can tell you’re watching the Kings? They don’t have a stop yet. Oh man, you I’m sorry. I Why are you negative about that? I didn’t know my microphone was on. Okay. Uh yeah. So I I’m pretty sure I’m not really supposed to do what I was just doing there. Yeah. Nice. Left-handed. Yeah. Right now. Here’s dang deal Jay on what’s going on in West Sacramento. And this is not taking shots at anybody or a commentary on what’s going on. comes down to this interesting piece in the bee today. Uh, and the bee is asking what people in Sacramento, the people who have the wherewithal to actually increase Sacramento’s chances to get a team, what are they going to do about it? It comes down to this. Uh, this is from the be who would pay. Uh, in Oregon, they’ve got the Portland Diamond project that’s been rallying support to bring an expansion team to the city for years. years they’ve been working on this and they we’ve talked about this. Oregon recently passed a bill that would authorize up to $800 million to help finance the stadium. Yeah. The city or the state. Who is that? Yeah. It’s this state. The state. Okay. Yeah. You got in Tennessee and they are considered a almost a lock. Music City Baseball’s been working to bring a team to Nashville since 2019. uh director of the Warsaw Sports Business Center at the University of Oregon says there are groups that have names that are talking about this in other cities. And then uh you’ve got this from Matt McDonald, lifelong Ace fan, lobbyist for the California Apartment Association, former consultant for the Coliseum City Project. He said Sacramento lacks clear vision. Says somebody has to throw down the gauntlet and say it will be here. The rest of the city would have something to rally behind. Again, that’s Matt McDonald. And obviously, no one right now necessarily wants to take on the risk that would that would come with that. But from people that uh are experts on how these things work, um that’s where we’re behind. We’re behind Sacramento in two areas. One, some of these cities, specifically Portland and Nashville, they’ve been working on this for a long time. Yeah. So, they’re well further down the road on stadium plans and things like that. And we don’t have a stadium plan. Now, maybe if the A’s are going to be here a few years, maybe there’s it’s not urgent, but at some point, we’re going to have to have some sort of plan to build a baseball stadium to even have a shot at a team. And someone’s going to have to take the lead on whatever it’s going to be. Maybe you, Jay, maybe you should take the lead on, you know, Sacramento baseball project or or whatever it’s going to be called. Gotcha. Yeah. And I’m not saying um that we should criticize anybody for not doing that yet. I’m just saying the reality of it, the rules of the game essentially are at some point for us to have a shot, someone’s going to have to jump in with both feet and take that bull by the horns. Yeah, it’s interesting why because I hadn’t thought about that and I I’ll take a step back, you know, uh, six, seven, eight years ago here. I felt like that has been a huge issue in our community and we’ve kind of seen this same story play out with the Sac Republic. Now, they’ve went and spun a different direction, but on the surface, if you ask, you listen, you pay attention, it seems that was part of the issue with the Sack Republic. And it was really just came down to one of the things we kept hearing is a whale. You need a big whale. Pretty much a person that can finance a lot has a lot of money can finance some things and say, “Hey, I’m willing to back that project.” That’s interesting in the form of I feel like VC has already kind of done that, but maybe he hasn’t. I would maybe he hasn’t. And I’ve heard that there are discussions ongoing which will surprise nobody, right? No, people are working on this type of thing, but you don’t want to tip your hand. You don’t want to come up with we’re working on this. What do you have? Well, we don’t really have anything. You know, that doesn’t do anybody any good. So, I’m sure there are discussions that are going on and maybe at some point here, end of this season or maybe next year, I’m sure we’re going to hear something about some kind of plan because obviously the people um the the power brokers know that. So, I’m sure it’s being worked on. It’s just a matter of whether they can come up with a plan that is uh feasible and one that can be competitive with what some of the other cities are doing. We’re where and I think a caller or text or someone on the chatau yesterday said don’t be surprised if you see one out by the airport. Yeah. Yeah. Knowing where um we know where the new arena for Sac Republic is going, where where would you where would you like to see that new plan I guess arise? Like where do you think we can put that stadium? The thing about the airport area is there’s nothing out there. Yeah, that’s too damn deep. Yeah, I’m with you. It’s a ways to go. But the way teams and I live in the tumas. Yeah. Okay. The way teams do do it now, and I think the Braves have done this, you know, it used to be we got to put the park downtown cuz then we got everything around it. And now teams come in like, well, wherever we put the park, we’ll just build everything around it. Exactly. We’ll build the village around it. So that that’s something to consider. It’s just a little far out. I mean, it is it is for And the soccer stadium is such a great site. Yeah, it is. And I mean, smack dab in the middle, right, for the most part. So I I don’t know. I I don’t know where you could th Listen, there’s plenty of places we see casino and and El Grove throwing up a brand new facilities and you know parking and all that type of stuff. Sky River uh and you it’s just so many spots that you could build in Sacramento. We have quite a bit of land obviously talking about the airport and I don’t know the last time you’ve been out there. Whitey. I mean, the neighborhoods and communities are being built over Elco. Yeah. Just I mean, is it’s expanding out there, right? And so, there’s opportunity for sure there. It’d be interesting to see where they would want the plan. And I also thought the nostalgia of the Kings Health uh excuse me, uh uh Sutter Health Park, the nostalgia of being able to just kind of more or less walk from each other, you know? has something to it. There’s something to it. Now, I I don’t know where, you know, I’m not on the planning. I’m not in the zoning committee here in Sacramento. I should be, though. I don’t know where you would want to put that out, but I do think someone definitely does have to come grab the bull by the horns. I’m with you on that. And that’s interesting to hear that. Who wrote that? Um, I have to double check on that. Yeah. Yeah. I believe it was a a woman wrote that piece today. Uh, I’ll get that information. No worries. I’m just, you know, trying to give him a little more information on it. Mhm. I just want to tell you that. Let’s see. Maxim Reno, he balling. He’s four for four. Balling, baby. Yeah, I looked up and saw three shots go in. He’s got 11 points, Jay. And the Kings have 14 and 428. He’s starting. It’s over with. He’s the four. Yes. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. All right. More on the Kings at summer league. uh the A’s and we’ll we’ll take a look at whether the the best basketball announcer on TV is he making a move that’s next on the drive guys on Sack on Sports. And you know, it’s summer league. You don’t want to get carried away. You don’t want to be silly. But I will say this, Maxim Reo may be the best player I’ve ever seen is having a He’s off to a good start. He might be the best player I’ve ever seen, Jay. He may be the greatest already. Yeah. 5 minutes and 40 seconds of work. Professional career. Reo four for four, one for one from the three-point line. Made a couple of free throws, two rebounds, a steel, uh 11 points. I got this text a moment ago. He’s everywhere from Yes, he’s the greatest. Jerry Reynolds says, “Nitzky who?” He said, “You can’t start any better than Maxine Maxine Moreno who is obviously drawing rave reviews here on the text line and uh in the chat from Kings fans who are thrilled with what they’ve seen.” Yeah, he’s balling. He’s doing his thing. It looked like the only thing he had. What? One turnover. Did he have that? The only thing is a turnover or no? Uh, he doesn’t. Okay. In the NBA.com box, he does. All right. No problem. Didn’t he No turnovers. It’s It’s all good. I uh I like I like what I’ve seen so far. He I’m not sure. Oh, he traveled. Got away. Somebody got away travel about three travels actually. Uh I I’m not sure. I I need to look up a little more because we’re we’re working. I like to see the foot speed. That’s something that everybody has kind of talked about him and the foot speed. He must been doing something. He must been running like Road Runner first couple of minutes. So, I like to see that. Yeah, he can stretch the floor and he’s got he’s got um he got three-pointer. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And he’s got um some creativity around the rim. Okay. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying he’s Julius Irving or anything, but I mean he does have a variety of uh of shots uh at the rim. Had a little one-handed push earlier. So, yeah. first summer league game. But it might be premature to say it, but I’m gonna go with that. Maxim Reno is the best player I’ve ever seen in my life. Calc stamp it now. Lu Al Cinder who? Kareem who? Yeah. Uh Nick Clifford 0 for two. Mason Jones one for three. Um Daniel Bacho one for two. So um that’s definitely the story so far. Minute 10 left in quarter one. Kings leading Orlando. And Maxim Reno is he is uh drawing gasps from the crowd. You might have we might have to he really he’s like woo like Jerry said you can’t do much better. Are you as a source told you he’s got a gas in the arena or what? Yes. Take my breath away. Yeah. So a good start for what that’s worth for Maxim Reno. Kevin Harland. Yes. Oo la. Somebody says Ja Sui Maxim Reno which I don’t know do you speak French? Does that mean Maxim Reno is a cheeseburger? I’m not sure what that means. Probably not that. Kevin Harland is moving to Amazon Prime Video. Isn’t that great? He’s tremendous. Uh deal was signed in May believed to be for three years. So he joins Amazon after calling the NBA for Turner Sports from 96 through 2025. Also, Brent Barry has signed with Amazon as a game analyst with the NBA moving to Amazon Prime. So, let’s see here. Among those added by Amazon Prime Video are play-by-play announcers. Ian Eagle, love. He loves being on the show. There’s no way around it. Friend, not just a friend of the show, he loves the show. Family of the show. Yeah, great guy. Uh, Michael Grady. And then the analysts include Minnesota Timberwolves. He’s been friend of the show. That’s right. We’ve had him on, too. Blake Griffin, Steve Nash, Dirk Nitzky, Candace Parker, Stan Van Gundy, and Dwayne Wade. More analyst hires are expected. Cassidy Hub will be Amazon’s number one sideline reporter. Uh Taylor Brooks will host a studio show. This all according to The Athletic. The one I’m really most interested in hearing is Blake Griffin because, you know, he’s he’s dabbled in comedy. He’s a really smart guy and obviously, you know, his career didn’t end well because of injury, but he was an outstanding player. So, I think he’s got a lot of potential to be a really good analyst, but but we’ll see. Yeah, it’s interesting. I’m uh I don’t know. You know, Blake is uh it’s an interesting choice when I saw it pop up. Didn’t uh did you say Brent Barry, too? Yes. Yeah, Brent Barry was in there, too. That was another one I was like, ah, okay. I see Barry jumping back into the seat. He has done some broadcasting Turner Sports and NBA TV. I a while ago. Long time ago. I don’t actually know that I remember that. Yeah, it was a while ago cuz remember that he jumped into San Antonio’s front office and doing some stuff there. Yes. Uh but I remember a while ago he did it. I mean when I say a while ago, we talking what 2010ish around that time like when I kind of started in radio. But the the Iron Love Iron Eagle, Kevin Harland’s one of the best to do it. Yeah. No doubt about it. I when I talk about playbyplay and analyst, I think we’ve had this conversation. It’s to your subject subjection, right? It depends on who you like and whatever you do. But I do think the Kevin Harlins, Dying Eagles of the world, uh those those guys are universal. More times than not, they have a high percentage of of uh support. And so when you got guys like that at the helm, it’s all for it. You know, Michael Grady is he hasn’t he, you know, he’s been around Timberwolves, been around playbyplay for a while, but NBA nationally, he’s kind of taken the next step. I will say this, uh, Eric Collins, for my money, he does it the Hornets, he’s the playbyplay for the Hornetsuch Curry, man. No, seriously. I love Aaron Collins calls because I am an excitable type guy. So, I like when my playbyplay gets excited, you know? I like Gus Johnson. I know he’s not for everybody, but I love the fact that Gus just Yeah. It could be 10. It could be a four yard pitch and if he someone makes a spin, Gus is just like you talk about Maxim Reno. He’s the greatest ever. I heard that a few years ago a professional sports team in this town actually reached out to him about becoming their play-by-play guy. Really? I don’t know that he was interested at all. Maybe he wasn’t, but that’s that’s what I heard from a pretty good source. Okay. Sources have told you. Yeah. A source. Pretty good source. Okay. Okay. By the way, I thought I saw that Dell Curry was Yeah, Dale’s on there, too. Yeah. Yeah, he’s on there. I mean, you’re just basically moving the Charlotte Hornets team over to national. That’s all our country needs. Yeah, absolutely. Well, at least they’ll be able to see some winning basketball in one form or fashion. What I like about Haron and and Mike Breen is they they don’t get in the way of it. They take a backseat to the action. You know, the action is what comes first, but they do such a great job of describing it and they describe it with such enthusiasm that they actually elevate it. You know, it’s not about them, but they do a great job of helping you appreciate what’s going on. Yeah. It’s a it’s a real gift. It is. No doubt about it. And it takes time. You have to uh be around it. You have to know what you’re doing, you know, when it comes to that. And they they are legends at this point. Kevin Harland, Iron Eagle, you know, Hall of Fame legends. They’ve they’ve done it for a long time, and there’s a reason why they continue to keep getting, as you said, escalated and elevated into other positions even though they’ve been national for a long time. Maxim Reno has not reentered the game yet. What do you think, man? We’ll break in uh whatever’s going on. We’ll get you the stinger. More from the Kings summer league opener. Uh end of the first are up 2112. to drive guys on sackown sports. This is the story of the one. As a safety manager at a manufacturing plant, he does everything he can to keep his co-workers safe. And uh speaking of Las Vegas, you know, a little while ago I said something kind of silly. I said Maximo is the best basketball player I’ve ever seen. I want to amend that. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen in any sport ever. I mean this come on Jay, he’s five for five now. Uh he got a couple of assists. He just had a play a moment ago and since, you know, we first came back and Jay started playing Viva Las Vegas, he’s had like two assists and five points or something. He had the ball on the wing and he had an open three, pump fake, drove, threw it in the corner for an assist, then he threw a nice back door pass. I mean, mission accomplished. Scott Perry, give an extension, huh? Scott, he’s right there. Scott Perry, front row. You see Scott down at the bottom next to Alvin Gentry. Okay. And uh and I see a couple of our dignitaries for the Sacramento Kings. Uh I see Paul Johnson up there and a couple guys. So I But where’s the drapingator? I I I don’t see Drape. Drapes is knowing Drapes. He’s probably hobnobbing. Yeah, he he’s probably somewhere else, man. I And I know he at the Kings uh the official polo, but I haven’t seen him or HT, so they probably moving and grooving in there somewhere. Mason Jones is giving the big Frenchman some uh defensive instructions and a friendly pat on the derriè. Uh but let’s see, we got 634 left. Second quarter, as you may know if you’re watching, uh the Kings leading Orlando 31 to 14 and Maxim Reno is five for five, 13 points, one for one beyond the arc, made a couple free throws, two assists. Wow, he’s doing his thing. and Whitey, thanks to uh our Sack Sports 1140 NBA Kings insider Brendan Nunez, he gave an update on Isaac Jones’s situation. Ah Isaac’s is wearing a mask. It’s because he had surgery for a deviated uh a deviated septum. How about that? And he said according to Bon Isaac said it was okay to share. So that is a mask on Jones. You noticed that right away? Yeah, I did. It’s like you got some taper. Look at Scott Perry moving like a like he’s drive he’s driving a race car moving left to right. He’s trying to see the action. I like it. Scott up front and personal. Uhhuh. Uh Nate Clifford. Well, I’m not going to go through the numbers for you. You can check it. Uh NBA.com dunking on folks. Maxim Reno playing very well. Uh Devin Carter, by the way, is two for six uh in six minutes 40 seconds, four points. So, the Kings I I’ll say this, the Kings are running they’re still running a lot of DHO stuff. Yeah, they are. They definitely are. Dribble handoff. Yeah. Yeah. You you can you can see the movement. I will say this and I was listening to the programming in between the commercial. got my guy Greg Anthony on and Greg was talking about the defensive uh intensity that the Kings are playing with and he was saying something of the sorts of uh he he likes the movement and it you know every bucket is hard to get for Orlando right now. Nothing is coming easy. So yeah, uh looks like they’re going to be pushing that that defensive intensity. Yeah. Picking up uh full court. Mhm. Get off me, fella. Man. Yeah. That’s why that that was my point. You know, I I mentioned that Zack Lavine was on with Monty Pool and he talked about, you know, ground zero, fresh start, but this today, this is kind of ground zero for the whole new regime. And so, it’s interesting to see um how some of the things that Scott Perry and Doug Christie have talked about, will we see evidence of them in this game, in this summer league game? And it looks like so far we are as far as what uh the principles Scott Perry’s hoping this culture is built on. It’s just summer league. I know it doesn’t guarantee anything, but it’s just interesting to see it come together before our very eyes. This new direction for the franchise. Yeah. If nothing else, it may be you go get the type of players that’s not going to back down and give it to you, you know, give it give you their all as much as possible. Uh be in your face, be a a pest mosquito. Yeah. Uh and bring that toughness. So, we’ve heard that, you know, he he’s got six core principles that Scott Perry has dropped just about every press conference in some form or fashion. It looks like uh the caliber and the type of player they may be hunting for uh is a little different than what we have come to know. And again, it’s first quarter of summerly. Yeah. Yeah. Here’s where I see things on a collision course potentially. You’ve got this commitment. It’s been stated these are the types of players that we’re looking for. Intensity, uh, defensive presence. You’ve also, when you look at your roster, you’ve got Zack Lavine and you’ve got Demard Rosen. And intensity and defensive presence are not the first things that come to mind when I think of them. And they’re very accomplished players. And I wonder if it’s going to be tricky and maybe it won’t be, but how you continue going forward with building a culture based on those things when two of your best players are really not that type of player. Can they embrace it just enough to make it work or is that going to be an issue going forward, Jay? I don’t pretend to know the answer. Yeah. But I do see it as like one of those things is not like the other. Right. And I I can understand the uh the befuddledness of of where you’re coming from. I I guess my hope and this is just a a wild, you know, guess at the situation. My hope is you can have, you know, a player or two or three on a 15-man roster who doesn’t always have to be doesn’t have to fit your makeup. I think the issue that a lot of Kings fans have and I go straight to the source of it, right? The root of it is I believe the leaders or the stars or the main dish of our team doesn’t fit that makeup. That’s the thing. Versus you can put eight people around that fit that makeup. do those two, as you said, buy into it or can you still win despite that and know that their greatness, you know, who they are can can dumbfound the the the other uh aspects that you’re missing when it comes to that. So, I don’t know. I just think that I will say this though. I I’m not sure if Zack Lavine doesn’t fit some of those things. I don’t it’s not for me to say there have been whispers of some things that had caused Zack Lavine at the back end of the season for him not to kind of be the Zack Lavine I think that NBA circles have come to know it’s a it’s a given it but it’s for Zach to tell those things and if he doesn’t it doesn’t but I’m not sure and this is just my guess I 100% do not No, I believe we didn’t get the full cup of who Zack Lavine was at the end of last year. I think he’s going to come in this year and be a little bit different. When I go back and look at Zack Lavine at the height of who he is, he’s intense. No doubt about it. And if it he’s not the get in your face, but the one thing he is, he’s a competitor. And the other part about it is he’s so athletic that sometimes it comes across like damn he he’s balling like he he takes it to another level because of who you know his play. I don’t know if he’s the type of guy that’s going to buckle down on defense. I’m not sure Deamar is either. They’ve kind of shown that they probably aren’t those guys. But I believe if you put enough people around them may be able to figure it out. Yeah. The key to me is the point you made that whatever franchise, whatever culture you’re trying to instill in your franchise, your best players have to embrace it. I mean, we’ve seen that with Tim Duncan in San Antonio and Pop yelling at everybody and he was as hard on Tim Duncan as everybody else and Tim Duncan’s like, “Okay, that sets the tone for everybody.” Um, I’ve mentioned this before. We saw this, you know, with the Warriors, you know, strength and numbers. Well, okay. Yeah. Andre Egodala, hey, we want you to come off the bench. All right, I’ll do that for the good of the team. Wow. Well, he’s doing it, so I got a buy in. I mean, he’s Andre Egodala. So, it could be an issue if you have you don’t have a buyin. Now, that’s different than just not being capable of it. But I think you’re right. Demar Rose is never going to be a great at this point. He’s not going to be a great defender. He brings intensity of a different kind. But Zack Lavine, I think, is the key because, as you said, Zack Lavine is, and we’ve talked to writers and people that know him, he’s athletic enough where he could be a good defender. I’m not saying he’s gonna be all league. And Zack Lavine himself has said, we talked to uh Casey Johnson about this. Zack Lavine has said on ball I’m, you know, I’m fine. Sometimes when I’m off ball defensively, I get a little distracted. So, if he can work on those things and bring that intensity, um I think that’s going to be enough buyin. But I think it’s crucial that Zack Lavine buy in to this philosophy or it’s going to be hard to get everybody else on on board with it. And I think he’s capable of it. Yeah, I I I understand. in a vacuum where you coming from Whitey. I I would say this and there’s no disrespect. I disagree in the form of some of that is this. There’s a lot of teams where their star or number two guy I mean just look down at the Warriors. Steph Curry is will never be considered a great defender. I think he’s he he is a a decent team defender. But the one thing about him is is he’s a competitor. No doubt about it. He’s not backing down. I say the same thing as A Lavine. Now, what pushes the next level is, and this is why I’m saying, there have been plenty of people, we can go back to the beginning, the Fesus, the David West, the Sean Living, there’s so many people that they have put around uh uh uh Bogat, they so many people that they’ve put around the the Steph Curryries of the team, the Jordan Pools of the team, you know, uh even Kavon Looney is not intense at all. He seems like the most quietest who who gives a damn type player anyway. But no one is questioning those things. His toughness, he gets rebounds, you know, all these different things. It it I I have a tough time where people continue to talk about Zack Lavine not being tough or not being competitive or not being able to play defense. Well, guess what? We’re the other four guys. Mhm. And so I think if and that’s why I say this just my this just me. I think if you put enough people around him and Demar I know we’re talking about two of you five you have an opportunity. I think people can win that way. Mhm. The difference is the Warriors culture. They didn’t necessarily base it so much on the things that Scott Perry says he wants to build a culture on here. So yeah um yeah Steph Curry bought into the whole you know strength and numbers. uh he was a team player. That was what their culture was based on. They were a good defensive team. But I mentioned the toughness because that’s Scott Perry and Doug have made it clear this is what we’re building on here. So that’s why I think it’s more an issue with this team than maybe it was with that team. But I do agree with you as I think about it and as we talk about it, I think Zack Lavine is capable. But I think it is crucial that that he buys into that um because he’s one of your best. You know, Domomas, not a great defender, but he works as hard as you can on defense, and he’s tough. Yeah. So, you get Zack Lavine on board with that, and that goes a long ways towards the rest of the guys down the roster. You know, they look up at Zach making what he’s making. If he’s doing it, then we’re all going to have to do it. That’s important. Yeah, I get it. He’s capable. Yeah. Yeah, he he definitely is. There there’s something to be said there. It’s a it’s a interesting uh dichotomy that the Kings find themselves in because they’re two well really this probably a three-headed team with Domas D Rozan and Zack Lavine and then everyone else. Uh I think Malik is definitely the locker room leader. He’s shown that he’s probably the heart and soul of the squad. So, if you want to call it a fourman movement just because he seems to be the most vocal from the outside looking in, I it’s it’s interesting, you know, because I I question myself, you know, and I I go back to when Draymond stomped on Damont Sabonis. Different game, a lot more money. You know, you look at the 80s and 90s and you hear people, “Oh man, I have went over there and closlined him.” Okay, cool. No disrespect. I probably would have went over there and closed somebody. You have to do something. that that’s it. Yeah. And so that’s where the toughness and the intensity there’s a that is a different level. And for me, as someone says, was Bibby and Pasia uh great defensive players? No, not not really. But the thing is, and that’s where I’m coming to is you had people around them that substituted for them that was over the top with that. like just furious. You know, Bobby Jackson and Doug Christie were furious to the point of hell no, that’s not going to happen. It’s never going to happen on my watch. To this day, DC, Coach Christie talks like, man, I he talks about stuff. We had conversations. He’s like, I wish a person would. That’s the type of people you have to have around Zach. And it’s not so much he buying in, it’s protect his ass, too, though. Yeah. And that’s my thing is is we gota at some point and this is what Drapes talks about and I gotta give him credit. As much as we question Zack because he’s the person making 48 million. I get it. We question Demar sometimes. We question Sabonis. It’s happened this past summer. Sure. There’s a lot of other people that I got to answer some questions that’s getting by. They are. And that’s why I say it’s time to start having conversations about Keegan. It’s time to start having conversations about like Shruder to me is the type of person, oh you going to get Zach, watch what I do. And that’s why I’m saying you can go about winning that way cuz people have. Right. Right. But again, I’m not saying every team has to have the same philosophy when it comes to their culture, but this team has stated that toughness and a defensive presence are what they want to build on. The Kings, the Weber Kings, uh, you know, they had they were not a great defensive team. That’s not what they were built on, right? So, I’m not saying every team has to be tough and uh defensive-minded, but I do think I understand your point. I agree with you, but whatever is your stated objective as a team, your best players have to buy in and and I so that’ll be interesting uh to see. I I expect you’re right that Zack Lavine will buy in and be more comfortable. And if he sets the tone for you on that end, then you’re that then you’re home. You’re Scott free. You’re home free. No doubt about it. What’s Just so I know cuz I I I I like to hear from your opinion. What’s buyin to you? Um what does that mean buy in? Showing through example, doing it, you know, rather than talking about how great it is. I’ll use the same examples I use. Tim Duncan lived it, breathed it, you know, won with it. Um, Egodala, it’s one thing to say, I want to do what’s best for the team, but for him to actually, all right, come off the bench. I think that sets the tone. Going back, you mentioned Malik, you know, I talked to Malik about this when they they were bringing him off the bench. Uh, I think that set the tone for that that Beam team. It’s like, Malik’s coming off the bench. Why is he doing that? Cuz it’s best for all of us. He and Mike talked about it. We’re good. Wow. If he’s king of the kings. Yeah. And I think Sabonis that year too, he had a broken thumb and he played through it. Those are the things that, you know, example is more important than than than what you say. Gotcha. In my opinion. Yeah. No, no, I’m I wholeheartedly show it to me. Don’t talk to, you know, tell me. Yeah, I’m I’m with you on that. I I Zach is a is an interesting example because he’s been it’s he’s been so up and down in the NBA. You have people who, you know, speak the world of him. And I think this is everybody, right? We probably got more examples of this uh throughout throughout life, but it feel like Zack has been a player uh in throughout his career where it’s hot and cold, you know? It’s very hot and cold with Zack. Oh my god, he’s he’s the greatest. He’s super athletic. And then you get like, oh yeah, you know, he’s a ball stopper, man. He’s overpaid. It’s so hot and cold with Zack. It it really is. And so I Well, even going back to what Scott Perry said, you know, on that uh podcast where he said, “Yeah, he puts up numbers, but they don’t always equate Yeah. with winning. Remember?” So, he has had that reputation. To me, that’s where I thought the big breakthrough was for him last year. Two things. One, he’s coming off of injury and and he stayed healthy. That was huge. And he shot the ball so well. The one thing I didn’t see from him a lot last year once he came over was you go back to earlier that year, remember when the Kings were playing the Bulls, Zack Lavine was the type that he’ll he’ll go back and forth with you. Yeah. Like here we go. I’m going to make every shot in your face and he didn’t do that as much. He had some big shooting games and I think it was because he just wasn’t comfortable like am I supposed to do that here? What are we doing? You know, and that was one of the things that just came with being new. But you, you know, talk about his competitiveness. I remember seeing games where like he’s just like, “All right, you made a shot. Watch this. I’m going to bury one right in your face.” Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It’s it I I haven’t been able to grasp what has uh I guess the whole ball of wax with Zack. And not just since he’s come to Sacramento, he’s always kind of been that guy where you hear so many so great positive things from so many things and then you just get so many negative things, you know, outtakes and outlooks on him as well. He he’s been a uh he’s been a player that I think has definitely been hot and cold as seasons. There’s a season as Zack Lavine. I feel like for half of a season he’s the greatest thing ever. He’s Maxine Raino, you know. Well, not that good. He ain’t that good. Reno missed a shot by the way. So, I did. I saw that. A three-pointer, I believe. And then there’s certain times it’s like, yeah, you know what, man? He’s the 12th guy on the bench. That’s the way I feel with Zach’s career. It it’s interesting. I no clue why it has went that way. And maybe it’s because the equation of his salary, you know, a lot of times people look at salary and don’t uh they want it all. Yeah. It’s funny how not worth the money. Yeah. Um he’s pretty good, but he also it was for him, I think a lot of it was being hurt as much as he was. Yeah. Uh and those teams that he was on, and it wasn’t his fault because they weren’t very good teams. Um it’s like, well, they’re not winning. How good can he be? They’re not winning. That’s why I think maybe he doesn’t care. You know, sometimes I mentioned Mark Bole, the announcer for the Pacers, just posted this. Sometimes we as fans care more about a guy’s legacy than than they do. They play as hard as they can. At some point, there’s other things. They have lives. But in terms of Zack Lavine’s legacy, I think if he cares about that at all, and if he doesn’t, I don’t care. But he still has a lot to prove here. I asked him and Dear um after a game, “Do you guys still feel you guys both have been all-stars individually? You’ve both accomplished a lot. Is there something left to prove as far as you two guys together?” And yeah, I remember that question. Yeah. And Zach didn’t say anything, but um Demar said, “Oh, absolutely. Definitely.” So, that is something um to watch this year. Uh and I’m interested to see if he comes out with just a clearer sense of purpose, like what are we doing here? I know what we’re doing. Whereas last year, you know, he’d have a great game and then you watch the next game and for three quarters he no one knows what they’re doing. Yeah. Well, I’ll say this, Whitey, and I this the truth. If the Kings come out and let me first put a a disclaimer, they will not because I I believe in Coach Christie. I know that he’s not going to allow that to move too much further. But if some kind of way the Kings come out and they look befuddled, they don’t know the offense. They don’t know where to stand. I mean, it get to the point to where you take the shot, me take the shot. You know, it looked like hot potato last year. It looked like they were definitely confused on certain things. They gave it to Dear at the end and and there’s no second or third option. Then we we got a bigger problem than Zack Lavine. And that’s the straight up part about it. Let’s stop pointing fingers at Zack Lavine. Let’s talk about the whole ball of wax. So, I don’t believe that’s going to happen. Now, when it comes down to it, I believe personally Zack Lavine may still have some things to prove. Absolutely. He ain’t won a championship. He ain’t really been playing in the postseason too many times, you know. So, no doubt. I think he believes that. I And I truly believe Zack Lavine is a competitor. I really do. I believe he’s the type of dude, as you said, what do something to me, I’m coming back at you. So, to me, that speaks volume. It really does. Mhm. Uh the Kings are leading 35.2 seconds left in the first half. We balling, baby. Yeah. 42 to 33. Yeah. Wow. Interesting. NBA.com is a little bit ahead of the game here. I knew that. I knew that free throw was going in. Isaac Jones then dropped the mask. Huh. Guess he said, “No, I’m I’m not not wearing that no more.” Yeah. I will say this and I I know I haven’t switched over to other channel. Lakers are leading Dallas 10 to seven. Okay. So, everybody is over in the Thomas and Mac right now. Yeah, we’re looking a little slight and thin over at the Cox Pavilion, I must say. It’s looking It’s looking a little uh Miami Marlinish over there. It is. Yeah. Maximo baseball game or something. Oh, well, who knows? Maybe they’re going to get baseball in a few years. Maybe it’s going to look like that, too. Maxim Reno 12 minutes, five for six. Uh he’s got 13 points. cooled off quite a bit after that incredible start. Still the greatest player I’ve ever seen in any sport. He’s just kind of leveled off a little bit. Understandable. We all go through loans, right? I do think it’s important that Zack have a sense of what they’re doing. I I’m not blaming him for how last year he looked lost. As you said, they all kind of did at times, which is understandable, but uh you know, have that much talent on the roster. Everybody’s got to have a clear idea of what they’re doing. I guess, you know, I don’t think it’s all on this, but uh obviously the company line is that’s cuz we didn’t have a point guard. We got a point guard now to help organize all that. So, I get that. Yeah, we’ll we’ll see. Whitey, that that’s the great part about it is you have to live it. We have to experience it. We could talk to a blue in the gills, but one way or another will. Yeah, absolutely. One way or another, Demar, Zack, Dennis, Dom, and Keegan’s probably going to be there at five. They’re going to have to run out there and execute the game plan. And it damn show better look a lot smoother because if not, as you said, the kingdom, the king’s kingdom at this very moment, the patience is thin. Very thin. Ice thin. Uh, and it hasn’t frozen. The lake hadn’t frozen too much. Right. Some of that ice is so thin, you go out there, klunk, you’re you’re fishing. You better be careful. Yeah. Yeah. So, I I I I think, you know, Drapes talks about this all the time, an off season, uh, you put someone at the top of the pyramid who seems to be highly respected, great reputation, and as he, as he’s talked about, the knowhow, you put Scott Perry there, you choose a a a a basketball soant like Doug Christie, great basketball mind. It better look different. It needs to look different because if it doesn’t, boy, it’s going to be it’s going to be some thin sledding for sure. Orlando just went zone and the Kings looked like they’d never seen a zone defense in their life. Mason back in the game. Mason to shoot him out of it. Trying not to get discouraged here in the first summer league game. Uh we had another rookie extension today in the NBA. That begs the question once again, what about Keegan? And we’ll look at that when we come back to Sackon Sports. Staples presents That Was Easy. So, the kids back to school lists were extra long. Extra long sounds extra expensive. We have here in our studio I have uh you know we have I don’t know 60 monitors whatever it is. Uh we have uh next to each other uh NBA TV showing the Kings game and then we have ESPN showing the Lakers and the Mavericks. So you got Cooper Flag and I’ll tell you something Jay I know Cooper Flag was the first pick. He’s no Maxine Reno based on what I’ve seen here. Not even close. I don’t think Maxine should have won one. Uh yes. Okay. Hello, Maxi Marino has uh he’s off to a fine start. Had a a glittering sizzling first half uh Kings against Orlando. And then I don’t know how Cooper Flag’s doing. I could check that real quick here. But he’s three for seven. Okay. Seven minutes. But Jay had an interesting question. Maybe someone who’s watched the whole game can tell us. You’re wondering about Bronny, huh? Yeah. I want to know. Did he even start for the Lakers? So much was, you know, made about it. And hey, did he even get to start? Because he’s not out there. I mean, obviously, they’re at the end of the first quarter now, but I’d be interested to see if he started. I’m looking over there to see if I see him on, you know, have his warm-up tea off or anything. Looked like he still has it on, but he could have put it back on. According to this, it was uh connect Basisley uh Cole Sweeter and then Bronnie. Yeah, he’s two for two. Okay. Started at offguard according to NBA.com. All right. I was say he better be starting now. Only played 422 and uh yeah, two for well haven’t played that many minutes still in the first quarter. Yeah. Made a couple shots. Uh made a three ball did Bronnie. So right now Yeah, he’s uh he’s showing up. Cooper flag. He is. Yep. Young pup. You’re the rook now. I’m no longer the rook. I no longer have to do the rookie things. Oh, he travel. Got away with the travel. Missed it. Oh, he tipped it in. Cooper flag tipped it in. So, there really is Bronny. Bronny mania or Bronny intrigue. Anyway, that’s a real thing in summer league. People actually going like, “Oh, I want to see Cooper Flag against Bronny.” Is it real? According to drapes, you know, he’s in the facility and and the the ticket prices told us that somebody is that Bronny or is it just Cooper flag? I’m pretty sure it’s a Well, listen, I’ll say this. Last year when I was in Vegas for Bronnie, all his games that I saw, the two games were both in Thomas and Mack. And two caveats as Drake talked about, when the Lakers play, Thomas and Mack fills up a little more anyway because the Lakers. Yeah. But Bronny brought some people out last year. No doubt about it. It it was it’s probably not like it is today and definitely not like the way the tickets have said, but there were some it was some enthusiasm to come out and see him. Mhm. And now I know he I’m pretty sure one of the games I remember he started. I can’t remember the other game, but there was you know people were there to watch him. No doubt for sure. from NBA.com. They they have a list of 15 players to watch at summer league and it’s alphabetical, but Bronny’s on the list. Bronny James is playing in his second summer league and is showing immense improvement from last season. He scored 10 points against the Heat, which would have been at the California Classic. Two for five on three-pointers, using his athleticism to get downhill. Has a defensive presence with rim protection. He’s also growing more confident from behind the ark, which makes him a captivating player returning to Las Vegas. So, okay. All right. Well, I’ll keep an open mind. I have nothing against Bronny. I just I resent all the hype, which he’s not responsible for. That’s not his fault. No, no, definitely not. It’s down. It’s uh Who you blame it on? The media. ESPN. Yeah. Uh we have a couple of uh extensions signed in the NBA. Jay saw this one. Herb Jones uh three for 68 million. Huh. Yeah. Three for 68 extending him further uh his further regime for the the Pelicans, which takes him to the 2930 season. I’m a huge Herb Jones guy. Yeah, I like what he brings to the table. Me, too. Herb Jones now has a total of 5 years, 97 million on his Pelicans deal. Not bad for a second round pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He’s what we call made it. He has made it. Yeah. Named to the 23 24 all defensive first team. He should have. Uhhuh. He was hurt this past season for a lot of it. Right. He played the beginning and then what what happened? I can’t remember what was it. Uh was it lower extremities? Uh I’m going to have to double check that. I want to say some but I don’t want to be wrong. Uh yeah, shoulder. I thought so. Shoulder labum injuries. Gotcha. Uhhuh. So above the waist extremity. They played only 20 games due to shoulder and labreum injuries. Labram, I believe that you got a labram in your shoulder. So, I think we’re talking about the same thing. Then also, as we discussed earlier, as everyone has seen, uh you got Jaylen Williams, Thunder’s number 12 overall pick in the 2022 draft with that uh big extension, the Oklahoma City Thunder. I know you were not crazy about that, Jay. Oh, well, no. I Please get your money. I was just uh you know we got so many capologists out here these days who tap tap in with us on the the chatau and text line and call in about you know VC’s money NBA owners money and I’ve always said I don’t really give a damn it’s not my money spend it. Jaylen Williams agreed to a five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $287 million, which gives three of their guys how much? 820 what? Yeah. Gilis Alexander signed a 4-year 285 million super max Tuesday. Homegrren reached a 5-year 250 million max Wednesday with the three new extensions including Jaylen Williams totaling up to $822 million. $822 million, which we talked discussed earlier. Starting next year, we’ll move into 50% of their cap, moving all the way up to almost 75 almost 80% of their cap space, you know, at the end of these these deals. Yes, I could have sworey people came in and said, Jay, you crazy. You don’t want to you don’t want to jump over the first apron and the second apron. It makes it so hard to do this and do that. And I said, what? spend the money if you want to win. It’s going to take them where now how many aprons? Well, in 2627, and I’m just reading this from Bobby Marks. I I I don’t pretend to know this on my own. The Thunder project to have a payroll of $246 million, which will take them over the first and second apron. Second apron. Double apron jumping according to Bobby Marks. However, unlike recent high-spending teams, they have flexibility with 77 million in non-G guaranteed contracts. They have dozens of draft picks. They’ve structured their contracts in future years put to put them in position to keep the core of the roster together for the foreseeable future. We may be looking at the closest thing we’re going to get to a dynasty in this era. OKC. Yeah. Yeah. It’s going to be interesting. Mhm. Those young fellas, lot of talent, tons of draft picks, 14 in the next seven years. They actually care about each other and they care about winning. Yeah, they do. They do. And that’s old school. Yeah. And what you talk about buying in, I think they have all bought in. It is It is the culture in OKC. No doubt about it. It’s It’s just interesting. And we talked about Bobby Marks also had a a tweet a little earlier where he talked about the new NBA contract, the team having a new arena that’s set to open in a couple of years. We’ll be able to recoup a lot of that money that they’re spending. And that’s it. It’s just interesting, man. You know, you I’m not one to sit around here and count ownership’s money. And I know a lot of fans like to play GM and Cap Guy and Eric Pinkis and Bobby Marks and Keith Smart, Keith Smith and all these other guys. Go ahead, do it, please. I barely understand the cap and I try and get read the thing two three times a week. Yeah. It’s just so difficult, right? But I do know this and I’ve been a big proponent of this and I’ve said it before. You can do anything if you want to spend the money. We’re seeing it and as you said it the way it looks as if as if they’re, you know, they’re going to be a a team to reckon with the next 5 6 7 8 9 10 whatever how many years you you believe dynasty cuz a lot of those guys 22 24 I think Shay is 26 now. You know it it they have a lot of great talent. They do and they’re spending money. Yeah. So Jaylen Williams was the 12th pick in that 2022 draft and uh Herb Jones was a second round pick in 2021. I know last year Jay, last summer we did the 40 best Kings uh in Sacramento history. We may have to go back and put Maxim Reno in there somewhere. He’s that good so far in the summer league opener. Well, you got him right now. Where you pegging him? Seven. Seven. Yeah. And trending upwards. He’s already at Yeah. Kings leading Orlando uh 5642. Didn’t we have a caveat? You had to play at least one year. I know. Yes. But he’s that good where you just you throw the rules out. Okay. You know, sometimes when like you got to wait five years to make the Hall of Fame. Some guys are that good where it’s like, “Yeah, you can go in now.” Maxim Marino is that good? Uh, from Dennis Young Bloodood in the chatau. He’s the goat. Manny Tulleit says he’s the French goat. So, I looked it up. I believe the French word for goat is chevy. Chevre. Okay. If you speak French and I have that wrong or right, uh, let me know. Chev. Yeah, he’s the French goat. He’s that good. Maybe. Oh, maybe we should tell Drapes that. I don’t know if Drapes could handle French. I mean, maybe. Like he comes out chev. Yeah. He comes out the big chev with the bucket. Yeah. Le Chevron Gro. That’s the big goat. The big goat. Lev. Yeah. I like it. Yeah. So, here’s what we have so far for Maxim Reno. Uh 16 and a half minutes so far. Six for eight, two for four beyond the arc, two free throws, uh three rebounds. He really has. You know, we’re having fun here and we’re getting silly, but he’s played really well and he’s active and they’re all playing with a lot of intensity. Yeah, I think if you’re the Orlando Magic, you know it is, Jay. You’re like, “Stop it, you guys. This is summer league. Stop playing so hard.” Playing too hard. Yeah. And we supposed to only go 60% out here today. Yeah. This dude’s out there trying to get a job, trying to survive. Uh-huh. Uh, where are we with Keegan? I know we talked about it yesterday. You know, we talked about Jaylen Williams. He was a 12th pick in that Keegan draft. Herb Jones get an extension. He was a second round pick the year before Keegan was drafted. Do we need to get that resolved or can we let this linger a little bit if we’re Scott Perry and company? If it’s me, I’m letting it linger. Really? Yeah. Yeah. I let it linger. I think What are you waiting for? Uh well, I look at the way the Kings and this wasn’t this wasn’t this regime, but I look at the way the Kings handled Damonte Sabonis situation. And when you really look back at it, they were they were bidding against themselves in the form of That’s a great point. Yes. You didn’t have to really do nothing. And I understand unless Dom and his Kent were like, “Do something now or we’re out of here. Maybe last year, you know, with all the the the trepidation and things that happened, maybe had trepidation and but I just think you wait. You be a little patient.” And to me, I think Scott, that’s gonna be one of Scott Perry’s great traits here. I think he’s patient. I think he’s comfortable in being patient. I think he also believes that he can he can drum up some things. And so, even if it’s Yeah., you know, people are pointing to the point like this has to get done. This has to get done. Nah, don’t worry about it. We’ll take care of it. You know, Scott Perry’s got a he’s got a mouthpiece on him. Just really sit back and listen to him. You know, he’s got the g the gift of gab. I and I I truly believe part of his reputation is because he is confident in what he does and he I think at this point has seen everything. It’s um it’s possible now if it were up to me I’d say yeah get it done and I hope they do get it done that is extension but it’s possible that they Scott Perry you know he Keegan wasn’t his guy and I’m just saying maybe he wants to see well what if we don’t extend him yet let’s see how he responds to that you know if he plays well all right if he doesn’t if he can’t handle that and doesn’t play well maybe he’s not a guy we want to extend I mean I don’t know I hope they do get it done but again I think it’s really important to keep into uh consideration that Scott Perry didn’t draft him. No, he didn’t. So, yeah. Yeah, he didn’t. And so, you’re kind of saying he’s he’s waiting. He’s looking for a show and prove. Could be. Okay. Could be. I think that’d be risky. I think Keegan brings you a lot of what you don’t have much of, but um I could understand that. I hope they get it done. you brought up, I think, a really interesting and important point and I don’t know if we really talk about it enough when we look at the Kings and the Beam team and what happened after that. Uh, we all know that after the Beam team year, Beam Team won, they lose to the Warriors and then they didn’t make moves, you know, they brought back Harrison Barnes. They didn’t really add. Yeah. And one of the reasons they didn’t add is because of what you said. They decided they got rid of their first round pick, right? Maxi Mareno went to uh not Maxi Mareno, I’m sorry. It was Olivia Maxon’s Prosper. Oh, Max. Yeah, pardon me. But he went to Dallas because they were creating cap space to give Domas that big extension, right? Which maybe they didn’t have to do. Yeah, I think it was going to happen and not necessarily know if he needed to do it right then and there. And you you always talk about buying in. That may have been a conversation where you go to do and say, “Hey, listen. We got you.” Yeah, no doubt about it. We We’re gonna take care of you. We need you to buy in this year and then next year we’ll take care of the business. They chose to go a different route. Get it done. Take care of it. Spend the money. And I do think it hindered them from, you know, being a little bit better and adding some talent that, as we come to know, needed. They needed, you know. So, I I really think with Keegan, I would take my time and decipher where his value sits on the grand scale. You see, you’re seeing guys around him. You just named three guys that have already signed. You see where they’re they’re landing on the spectrum. And Keegan is somewhere in in between all of them, I think. But his his comp is Jabari Smith right now. I’m I’m for one, if he gonna get Keegan for $22 million, I think you lock it in. Mhm. Oh, yeah. That would be a bargain. Yeah. I I think if if we’re talking 30 plus, I’m a little hesitant. That’s just me. Understandably so. And where did um I know we talked about this yesterday and I’ve seen it. Where did Smith end up about five for 122 or 124, something like that, right? So, he’s getting about 22 million, I believe. A little over 22 million a year. Yeah. That that that’s a great contract for a third or fourth guy on, you know, as a starter. Yeah. I I’m taking that. Mhm. For a guy who does as much as he does for you defensively, too. No doubt. Yeah. I think he’s really important to what they’re doing. We’ll see. Hopefully, they’ll get that done. But, yeah, there’s no rush necess. Well, it’s just interesting that we keep hearing about these extensions, you know. Yeah, it is. It’s key. Keegan compared to the other three is the Jay Will obviously Paulo, right? Was it Paulo one? Yeah. Yeah. Uh Ivy hasn’t been resigned, has he? Not that I know. He hasn’t been extended or I should say resigned. He hasn’t been extended off the best of my knowledge. Yeah. So, but Homegrren was another one. Homegrren. Yeah. Yeah. We’ll see. Mhm. Look at that draft. Hallow Cadet, Jabari Smith Jr. third, Keegan fourth, Jaden Ivy, Mathan sixth, Shaden Sharp seventh, Dyson Daniels eighth, Sohan ninth. Ah, that’s talent right there. Johnny Davis, the guy from the Taco Bell commercial. Remember that? Yeah. Yeah. Then Usman Jang and he might have been the first miss in the whole first in the lottery. Maybe he was nine. Uh, yeah. Well, he was 10. Johnny Davis was 10. 10. Yeah, man. Uh, now speaking of guards, he’s a guard. Um, campaign apparently according to Kyle Draper campaigns well somehow I don’t know who told Kyle Draper but Drape says according to a source he found out a campaign would be interested in coming to the uh Kings this year. So his camp Yeah, he said his camp Uhhuh. He uh got boots on the ground in Vegas and campaigns camp uh has said that he has interest in coming to Sacramento to be the third point guard. Third guard. Yeah. D said he said who’s the second point guard? Source said that’s a good question. Yeah. And Drapes also put the fact that his campus said they’re trying to steer campaign towards being a Sacramento king. Mhm. That’s what it I’d be good with that. Oh yeah, I’m good with that. I’m not going to do somersaults or anything. Lock me in. Yeah, there go. Coach Christie up there. Mark Woodson. There’s Mo and Deuce right behind him. Okay. Well, I was talking about uh Coach Christie not playing Woody bringing it. Yeah, it looks like Oh, and look at that. There’s a young fan signing autograph. Bringing a ball for Doug to sign. Like, yeah, if it was me, I’d charge him. I’m just playing. I’m just playing. Well, I think that’s a kid in a New Orleans jersey. I know that I’m going to text text D and say, “Dude, stop signing Pelican Pelicans fans and who’s how many autographs are on that ball right now?” Yeah, that’s a good question. So, campaign something to keep an eye on. We’d be for it. Um, but we’ll see what else goes on the Kings in terms of maybe Jonathan Kuminga. Uh, right now it’s 5949, excuse me, 5950 Kings leading Orlando. Summer League is underway. We have more drapes tomorrow, right? He says he says we do. We’ll see. Yeah, he might might get a little loose off them diet cokes tonight, so we’ll see. Have a great evening. Stick around. Golf to go is next on Sackdown Sports. Killer Down.
