The Golden State Warriors Are Smart To Shut Down Bad Offers For Jonathan Kuminga

On today’s show, how dumb do the Sacramento Kings think the Warriors are? And Jonathan Kaminga, should he be looking for a new agent? We’re debating these things on today’s live edition of Locked On Warriors. You are Locked On Warriors, your daily Golden State Warriors podcast. What are they going to say now? Sacramento has reportedly tried to fleece the Golden State Warriors. And I’m seeing in the comments right now, Monkey Game says, “I’m not kidding. I will gladly take that Kings offer, sign free agents, and then trade Moody.” We’re getting into that. Coach DC, how are we? Give me some good news. No good news, no news really to give you. However, I do have a take. It’s on Jonathan Kaminga’s agent and why Jonathan Kaminga should probably be looking for new representation. Also, Mike Dunlevy. Let’s give him a grade. Hop in the chat. Leave your thoughts on what Dunleaf he gets through his first what two two years and some change as the Warriors GM. Good to see you everyone. Let’s get into the program today. Let’s start off with um the Sacramento Kings deal that the Warriors said. H they said you guys are idiots. We’re not even going to entertain this thing. Jonathan Kaminga was the lone piece that would have gone out the door in a sign and trade and in return the Golden State Warriors would have reportedly received Devin Carter who was a top 15 pick just a year ago in the NBA draft but has struggled mightily. Daario Sarich which I don’t know if the Kings didn’t do their homework about how that experience went as a Golden State Warrior or or what was going on. Maybe Valenunis would have been a different story. But Saridge, it’s like what? Get a piece that we’re going to cut essentially. And then the other two were just second round draft picks. Not even throwing a first in there. Not even listening to the reports that the Warriors wanted a young talented player and a first round pick. Sure, Devin Carter could be that young talented player, but they didn’t even offer the first. They said, “You can have two seconds. That’s as good as a first, right?” No. Hell no. The Warriors said, “See you.” Um, Golden State’s smart to not just take slops. And I know Monkey Games in the chat said at this point that the saga has drawn, it’s dragged on too long. And as a podcast host, it is it’s a lot honestly coming on these shows every day and talking about the the mess, the conundrum that has turned into Jonathan Kaminga. But let’s not forget he’s worth something. Is Devin Carter that something? In my opinion, no. I I think that you’d be selling way too short at that point. We are talking about a player and granted I’m not like Kolski or or many other Warriors fans out there that’s a diehard Kamingistan. Like I think he’s a good player. I think he’s shown a lot of a lot of weaknesses throughout his young career. Extremely talented. But to those of you that say his weaknesses are only due to the fact that he doesn’t play, he he doesn’t play. He doesn’t play. He’s played 25 minutes a game for what, three straight seasons. He played as a rookie. He’s had enough time playing in meaningful basketball games to where it’s become a pattern that it may just be who he is. And I agree with the response that well, the only way to know truly is to give him full run in maybe last year and the previous year. He should have gotten 35 minutes a night because the Warriors were quite frankly going nowhere in 23 24 anyways to where yes give him 35 minutes a run a night who cares there but this year he was getting some run at the beginning of the season first of all and was playing really well and then Jimmy Butler joins the team and when he joined the team it was a different situation. Steve Kerr kind of alluded to that like we were winning basketball games. We have Jimmy. I’m not trying to incorporate him in to to potentially, you know, affect the mojo of the team and try to reconfigure him into the lineup. The DNP’s a little wild to me, but that is at least Kerr’s logic there. We were rolling. We had our lineup set and Jonathan just made it a tough integration to where and you can have that debate, whatever. But Jonathan Kaminga at the end of the day is a player that scored what 30 points. Did he do it multiple times? 30 points in a playoff game regardless. Um, so gave Anthony Edwards some serious issues on the ball. showed some elite athleticism which he’s been doing throughout his entire career. But when you see him in his length and his strength and just monoemono with a player like Anthony Edwards who is as bouncy as anyone in the league and you see Kaminga guarding him and it’s like all right, he’s giving Anthony Edwards some fits. You’re working with something there. Like he has talent, he has potential and in a trade you have to incorporate potential. Now does Devin Carter have potential? Well, he did out of college, right? He’s a a bouncy athlete himself at 6’2 that has pretty good wingspan for his size that can be a good defender at this level. But let’s not forget Devin Carter can’t shoot the basketball. And if you’re 6’2 and can’t shoot the basketball, unless you’re Russell Westbrook or name a few other players, I don’t want you. I don’t want to sniff you. Don’t want to sniff you. Um, and in the summer league, it it hasn’t gone great for him. This is on Thursday’s win over the Magic. Devin Carter was two of 14 from the floor. A robust two of 14. He had eight points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block shot. It’s South Carolina. He couldn’t shoot. He was a sub 30% three-point shooter last year. He’s a sub 70% free throw shooter. He’s not a good player at putting the the basketball in the basket, and that is kind of important as a guard, especially in the Warriors system in my opinion. So, I don’t know why you would want that. uh played 36 games as a rookie, did have shoulder surgery, so I guess you have to factor that in. Um but he’s healthy this off seasonason and again he went two of 14. Uh his slash line last year was 37% from the floor, 29% from three, and 59% from the free throw line. No, no, thank you. We’re going to need more than that for Jonathan Kaminga. This is someone that I mean, we’re taking crazy pills to a degree. He put up 30 in a playoff game. playoff game. In a series, he averaged 25 and was the the best scorer on the floor guard. So, I I just don’t understand what that deal is. The Kings are going for a fleece. The Warriors said absolutely not. So, I am extremely happy that the Warriors are at least waiting on this thing with the worst case scenario. It seems like bringing him back and trying to fit him into a lineup to run with Butler, Curry, and Draymond early in the season and see if it can work. Just see if it can work. One more season of this. Worst case scenario would be he walks for nothing in the offseason, accepts a qualifying offer, plays, walks into free agency, says, “I want nothing to do with the Golden State Warriors.” And you lose Jonathan Kaminga. you could have had two second round picks and and Devin Carter, you truly believe in Devin Carter, then then maybe the Warriors should have done that deal. And hindsight’s always 2020, but in this current moment, based off what I’ve seen with Devin Carter, that’s a laughable offer. I think a lot of people would agree that it is a laughable offer from the Sacramento Kings. Come back with something else. We could talk Sacramento. Throw in a first. The Kings aren’t great. I mean, maybe do you take that first and and take a project like Devin Carter? Maybe it’s a different story, but two two seconds, absolutely not. Want nothing to do with it. And the Warriors are better off right now just playing the waiting game, even if it means holding off on Al Horford and Danthony Melton, which I believe is the likely scenario right now. There’s some sort of a handshake deal or they’ve at least discussed uh the very likely scenario that they will be Warriors next year. And it’s just, hey, we need to take care of this Jonathan Kaminga situation first to figure out aprons and whether we’re in jail or prison and and all these different uh aspects of the financial world that the new CBA provides that is uh so fun to talk about on podcasts. What I will like to give you coming up in this next segment is a spicy take and that’s that Jonathan Kaminga should be looking for a new agent ASAP. Malpractice. malpractice what Aaron Turner, who represents Jonathan Kaminga, has uh done in this situation, not letting the man get some serious serious serious money if reports from Anthony Slater from the past are true. This is Locked on Warriors. Let’s continue this conversation. Leave your thoughts in the comments. We’ll talk on this live show coming up. All right, so to the conversation surrounding Jonathan Kaminga’s agent, first of all, it’s safe to say that Kaminga is Aaron Turner’s golden goose. He’s the man that’s going to be making him some serious bread. And this is real human stuff. This is two dudes looking for money, looking for the best deal possible. And in any relationship, when it comes to an agent, it’s it’s a it’s a mutual mutual benefits. You’re working for each other at the end of the day. Kaminga is trying to prove his worth, be a professional, do all the right things to to make Aaron Turner money, and Aaron Turner doesn’t get paid unless Jonathan Kaminga pays. So, his best course of action is to do the smart thing for JK. And the smart thing would have been to accept the money when he got offered the money if these reports are true. And and based on everything that we’ve heard from from Slater, the last reports, uh it it was true. But first of all, some of the players that Turner represents, like Terry Roier is the the big name. Um Diabate, Kevin Knox is on that list. He’s he’s one of the better players that he represents. Trey man, um JT Thor, let’s go down the list. Uh I mean, if you’re not an NBA fan, diehard NBA fan, and even if you are, you may not know who half these names are to be honest with you, because I’ve never heard of half of them, frankly. Half of them probably don’t play. Jonathan Kaminga does. And Jonathan Kaminga reportedly got offered quite a bit of money um malpractice. This is true. 120 million over four years was the report that uh we heard about Kaminga last off season. So that’s 30 million a year and the rumor was the report I guess was Slater said basically they were 5 million off. He wanted 35 million a year or 140 million over four years. And uh one of our commenters, Kevin Hannah, actually said that um it reminds him of the Dennis Shruder deal when he turned down an $80 million contract from the Lakers and ended up with a vet minimum deal. It’s basically an agent not reading the room correctly. And yeah, absolutely. when you think about what the new CBA entails and you have to think with 2020 vision ahead and you also weigh in the fact that all right how many teams are going to have cap space moving forward and you know technically plays the same position as Andrew Wiggins Draymond Green whether you want to call him the three or the four is he going to be cleared the runway he he’s clearly had some odds with Steve Kerr publicly calling out Kerr and Kerr basically going the other way and saying some things about JK to where like the relationship has been not smooth sailing. It’s been the seas have been somewhat rocky there. And you’re going to turn down $30 million a year over four years that would put you at what 26 when you’re looking for your next contract with 120 million potentially guaranteed. That’s malpractice. The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. And now it puts Kaminga in a tough situation. I say tough situation as if he hasn’t already made life-changing money. that if you invest or throw it into a high yield savings account, you’re you’re good for forever if you’re not an idiot. So, you can’t feel that bad. At the same time, dude wants to hoop. Good way to to be able to stay on the floor consistently is if a team has already made a long-term investment in you, $120 million over four years, something’s going to happen there. and like limited market right now. Tough situation that he’s in as a restricted free agent. And most likely he is not, it’s not most likely, he is not going to be making $30 million anytime soon. Screwed the pooch there. Time to get a new agent. Time to get someone that uh has represented some bigger names and can negotiate a better deal than uh what we’re working with right now because not good. Not good. 30 million a year. That’s tough. I mean, think about Moody. Took a $39 million deal over three years. That’s 13 million. um puts him at what 25 26 when his next contract’s up. Already has the the life-changing money and it just doesn’t math up. Doesn’t math up in terms of what Kaminga um reportedly turned down. So, I don’t know. What I do know going back to that Kings offer is that I do think he has plenty of potential and has showcased the ability. I mean, there were back-to-back games, I believe it was last season where he scored 30 each night. And he did it against the Rockets in the regular season. Almost single-handedly won them that game early in the year where they blew the 30point lead. It went into OT and then they wound up winning late. He was out outstanding in that game before the injury. Like he had stretches to the point where Draymond went to the bench and it was time to hand the keys to Kaminga. Granted, the team wasn’t winning a ton. You can I guess if you hate on JK, you can use that argument of he’s not a winning player, whatever, but he could score the basketball. He has elite athleticism. He can move. He’s 22 years of age. He’s worth something. He’s worth something. And the Warriors, even if the way to do it is to to play it out next season, give him a ton of run early on, see how it works out, and then try to trade him when his values up a little, go for it. Because if he has no value right now, then you don’t just jump at the uh the first thing. When you buy a stock for $130 a share and it dips down to $4.50, 50. Wait for the next earnings report. Hope that the world changes something, but don’t sell that stock for $4.50. Let it go for nothing at that point. Like, what are you doing? That’s kind of my logic on the entire thing. So, Kaminga and the Warriors avoid the Kings fleecing. Kaminga’s agent malpractice. Mike Dunlevy, however, what is his grade for doing nothing this off seasonason, but making some moves in the past that I think have been pretty wise. And given the hand that he was dealt, which was not an easy hand, I think he’s done a pretty good job. I would give him a flat A. A. I’ll give you my explanation coming up on locked on. All right, let’s get to some of the comments. This is a good time to tell you that we do go live on YouTube. Subscribe to the channel right now and you will be uh featured on the show from time to time. We got Todd Packer. Sup, Todd. He’s a uh he’s a regular on the program. He says, “Sign Kaminga for a one-year deal, then let him walk.” Um Warriors do have the leverage here, but Kaminga’s got to agree to anything that happens. So, um, he says, “We don’t want the the cap hit cap space.” It’s the new thing in the NBA. It is truly the new thing. And that’s why I’m going to get into Mike Dunley making some smart moves, especially the one that involved Jordan Pool and getting rid of that 140 million off the books. And and you can make the debate that, hey, maybe Pool would be the missing piece to a championship team right now, but it would mean no Butler. Does swapping out Butler for Pool make you a championship team? Absolutely not. You still have a lot of issues there. So, but cap space is huge. Definitely. And Brooklyn had cap space this off season and they they brought in Michael Porter Jr. and did nothing with that cap space for the most part. Got rid of a or got one pick in 2031 and that was really what they did with the Cam Johnson trade. So, uh you don’t always make the wise decisions when you’re in good positions. the Warriors. I mean, they they didn’t make the greatest decisions in the world having three lottery picks while they were championship contenders. We didn’t know they were championship contenders at the time, but they they were championship contenders because they won one. And to come out of that situation in not a great spot is it’s hard to do, but that’s the uh the world we live in. Todd says, “Not even the Kings want Kaminga.” That should tell you all we need to know. They want them. It just uh came with a very low price tag. So, not taking the bad deal. We got from Tom. The end of the upcoming season. Is it that Jimmy and Draymond resigned too much money for the performance? What’s left? What do you build on? I’m going to get to this uh Jimmy conversation coming up on whether that the deal was a smart move or not. I think hindsight will always be 2020, but I will tell you right now in this current moment that the trade was great. The assets that went out the door to bring in Jimmy Butler, it worked out tremendously in year one. The Warriors were significantly better. The extension, that’s yet to be seen. It can be wise or it can be it can go horribly wrong if age starts affecting an older player and keeps him off the floor and and doesn’t allow him to play in the playoffs and and all these things that can happen at any time with an aging superstar. Um the problem with any trade is we can only get back 15 million in terms of cap space. This is why you probably wait until December and try to get the true value to where um and granted in order to do that you would have to extend Kaminga to some offer. So, it’s a tricky situation right now trying to figure out what to do with JK. Um I think if the signing trade is on the table, the Warriors will do it. It’s got to be a decent deal though and accepting that first one in early July from Sacramento for Devin Carter and two second round picks. Uh no, no, I don’t think so there. Um anyways, going through some of the comments, uh it’s not Kaminga, it’s Kerr that has to go. I I truly pose that question to fans. Jonathan Kaminger or Steve Kerr if you had to choose between one. And let’s tie to the fact that if you chose Kamingo over Cerr, you’re pissing off Steph Curry undoubtedly. If that’s the situation, you still willing to to do that. Um, my answer is absolutely not. I still I’ve always believed in Steve here. I think he’s a heck of a head coach that has a soft spot for for smaller players and hasn’t gotten hard enough on his GMs or hasn’t been in their ear enough to to bring in some size to the Bay Area. He has some strange rotations at times that I think are due mainly to the fact that he’s had so much success with the strength and numbers mentality that sometimes he goes a little overboard with that which we saw early last season where they were playing 12 13 instead of just giving Kaminga and Moody 30 minutes per game and saying look we got to figure out one way or another what we have with these guys instead of going 12 minutes of Lindy Waters and 10 minutes of Gary Payton and all these different contributors coming in let’s just go with our nine 10 man rotation and call it a day. That’s one thing that frustrates me. But in terms of knowing how to coach up an offense, it’s still a thing of beauty. The cutting is excellent. I mean, go to a Chicago Bulls game or watch a Chicago Bulls game and watch the standing around and just the lack of team basketball that they play and it’s a frustrating watch. The Warriors have lacked some talent, which is why they were 500 at the beginning of last season. they just weren’t flatout good enough to be consistent competitors, especially with injuries and and those things starting to add up and and Curry wasn’t playing great. Let’s not forget that. He adds Jimmy Butler into the team and it was seamless. They went 23 and 8. 23 and 8. Jimmy didn’t seem to have a single issue with Steve Kerr after all the issues he’s had with other coaches. And and it’s yet to be seen there. There’s still a lot of time and a lot of things that can happen, but minus two or three players throughout a 10-year tenure. There there haven’t been many bad words said about him. He’s a players coach. And if it’s Jonathan Kaminga or Steve Kerr and you’re going to write off Steve Kerr’s entire legacy because of Jonathan Kaminga, then he better be a freaking Hall of Famer or at least an all-star level player. because I’ll see you in five years if he goes elsewhere and he’s someone that puts up 19 points per game and has a career trajectory of like who’s a player that that scores a bunch of points like Anthony Simons or or someone like that that isn’t on a winning team scores a bunch of points you point to him and say are they a winning basketball player whatever there are so many guys in this league that score 20 hell some people think Jordan P is that way I would argue that Jordan P was a significant ificant reason as to why the Warriors won a championship in 23, but that’s nor here or there. Um, hindsight is always 2020. We can have this conversation a couple years assuming I’m still hosting this show, but if Jonathan Kaminga is the sole reason and Moses Moody is your other sole reason, who actually got a lot of run by the end of the year and Steve Kerr trust him quite a bit. If those are your two reasons on why Steve Kerr needs to to get out the door and and he doesn’t have it anymore, then uh give me more arguments. I’m fine with, you know, stacking them together and and creating the pros and cons of should Steve stay or should Steve go. In terms of Mike Dunley, let’s get into that real quick. Um I give him an A. I think he’s done a good job with the position that he’s been in. I mean, his first big move, he he takes the job over from Bob Meyers and doesn’t make those draft picks in Wiseman or Kaminga or Moses Moody. His picks have been mainly all out of the lottery. But Jimky was his best pick in terms of draft slot. Second round picks of Trace Jackson Davis for as late as he went in the draft. I mean, Trace has shown some promise. He He’s had his moments. He’s still I mean not necessarily young in terms of age but in terms of experience he’s young. Quinton Post has proved to be even if Quinton Post does nothing else in his career. Soaking up minutes in a playoff game and scoring double digits in a playoff game that’s that’s more than most second round picks will ever give you. I.e. Nico Manion i.e. whatever. So he’s he’s made some pretty good picks I would say. and his first big move that he had to make was figuring out how to navigate the upcoming CBA, how to how to shed some payroll. Warriors had a lot of expensive players on the books and had to figure out what the right move was. Now, you could have made the argument that maybe it’s not extending Draymond Green and going that avenue. Um, he goes trading Jordan Pool instead for a salary dump. It was bold, but P was about to begin a 4-year, $128 million deal. Do the math. The Warriors were already in a money pinch. That’s $32 million a year to Jordan P. That that’s money on the books. That is is extremely difficult, especially considering now that uh Jimmy Butler is on the team. And the only reason you were able to do that is because you got off money like that. that would have been an impossibility to go big fish hunting at at last year’s trade deadline had Jordan Pool been on the team. Now, Jordan Pool would have helped. I think Pool’s a nice player. They didn’t win with him in 2023. He had a tough season for the most part after his his best season. Um was not great. His last moments were basically pouting on the floor against Sacramento. I guess you know the Lakers series were his last moments, but in that first series it was uh you know pushing Steph Curry’s hand or Draymond’s hand away. Steph going over to him and saying not cool man. Then Steph dapping up Draymond like that was a relationship that was just kind of over. There was no chance to rectify that thing. Dunlevy saw the writing on the wall and instead of who knows what moves he could have made, who knows what was on the table. But instead of trying to flip Jordan P for another highpaying contract, he says, “You know what? Let’s just bring in Chris Paul for a season. Uh, we’ll figure this thing out. Let’s get this money off the books.” And in hindsight, not the worst move in the world. So, hard to judge Dunley until this whole thing is done. But the the Jimmy move is the one that’s going to be a sticking point in his tenure, depending on how long it goes and how much success he has because it could be genius, it could be foolish. It was the only way to get the Warriors out of purgatory last year. They weren’t good. They were mid. As Steph Curry says, they were going nowhere. Nowhere. And they weren’t bad enough really to fall into the lottery unless they they truly like tanked. They just would have been like the 16th overall pick in a playin team if that whatever. They were going nowhere. So, he gets rid of Andrew Wiggins. He gets rid of a bunch of players and a contract in Dennis Shruder that was $13 million. that helps you. Um, first of all, he made the trade of Danthony Melton to bring in Dennis Shruder knowing that in a few months he had the opportunity right before the deadline to potentially trade him if that experiment didn’t go as planned. Maybe that was the plan all along. He’s like, Dennis Shruder is not going to fit in with this system. But it worked out perfectly. That’s having some foresight, seeing ahead. All right, no one wants DeAnthony Melton right now, but hey, maybe a team like the Detroit Pistons in a five team trade or whatever it was could wind up with a a point guard like Dennis Shruder that would help him out because one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. We’ve known this for a long time in life. So, um that was wise. Now, the extension aspect of it, we knew that that was attached to to Jimmy Butler. He originally didn’t want to go to the Warriors because there was no extension talks there, whatever. He didn’t want to stay in Miami because they weren’t going to pay him. He wanted his money. He had proved his worth in Miami as a championship level player and wanted to get paid. Pat Riley said, “You can go.” And Mike Dunley had to pay the piper and pay him a lot of money. And it can be a disaster for an aging star that has now been hurt in two straight playoffs, missed a playoff, and was highly ineffective as the lead player still with Draymond Green and Jonathan Kaminga who was putting up 25 a night for them to not even really sniff a win. I guess game three, they were right there. They could have could have been a different series had they won that game three. But aside from that game, it wasn’t even close. They they weren’t even competing with the Wolves and he didn’t play good basketball. Did not at all. But let’s not forget before he fell on his ass very hard. He was playing like playoff Jimmy. He had 38 in the playin against uh Memphis. Then I believe he led the way in game one against the Rockets or was right up there in points scored. He was putting up 25 plus every single night in the Rocket Series. It felt like we thought that series was done if he had to miss time with the hip contusion. He he was awesome last year. The proof is in the pudding with the record 23 and eight in the regular season when he joined the team. Um that’s a smart move by Dunley. So I give him an A for everything that he’s done with the hand he’s been dealt this off season. It’s yet to be seen. yet to be seen. Still a lot of time. I think bringing in Al Horford, DA Anthony Melton, and not letting Jonathan Kaminga go for peanuts and seeing what you have and being patient because it is a virtue. They say, I don’t think that would be lower than a Bminus of an offseason given the financial constraints the Warriors have. So, I think Dunley has been pretty poised. He’s also been aggressive. At the same time, he’s been patient. didn’t do anything stupid with the the marketing and the Paul George trades last summer, getting rid of all their picks and Pods and Moody and Kaminga and um potentially Wiggins or whoever would have been involved in that, you know, Paul George deal that would have been a disaster and he he flirted with it. So, look, he he flirts with disaster, you know, but at the end of the day, he he doesn’t go the full distance. He he’s patient and I I like that about Dunley V. So, um, Bob Myers drafting towards the end was somewhat of an issue, but he made some smart moves, too. Trading Wiseman for GP2. If that’s the best offer they got, then it was truly smart because Wiseman has done nothing and he would have been out the door anyways. And Gary Payeyton the second contributed at least a little in this year’s playoffs. So, that wasn’t bad at the end of the day. And um especially not extending him or anything of those lines and then not signing Otto Porter. That in hindsight, great call. Imagine had they spent the money that the the Raptors did to literally never get more than five games or whatever it was from Otto Porter ever again. That would be brutal. So, uh, Meyers had his flaws late, but mainly it was due to the, uh, the drafting and, uh, just the the mishandling of the Jordan Pool situation that Dunley V had to inherit and had to, uh, figure out what the wise move was, and it was just to get the money off the books there. So, anyways, uh, not a lot of free agent news to get to in regards to the Golden State Warriors. I see these comments coming in. Um, Devin, please don’t bring up that Minnesota series because all that stuff JK was doing in that series was empty calories. He still scored the points, you know, like game three when he put up however many he did, I believe it was 30 plus in in game three of that series. Um, it was still a series like put up 30 plus points in a in a must-win game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with Anthony Edwards and other good defenders all over him. I mean, he still has the talent. Does that mean he’s going to be an all-star winning type basketball player? No, it it doesn’t mean that. But it means that you don’t sell him low for nothing because he’s still young and there’s always there’s always that capability for it to click in the head and there’s always that possibility that just never does and he’s a scorer and not much more. So we will see. We will see. That is truly the nature of Golden State Warriors basketball right now. We will see. We knew they were going to go radio silent this offseason. there wasn’t going to be a ton of news, but uh it has been slower than ever imagined, but this is where we are. At the very worst, the Warriors have the opportunity to really run back a similar team to a season ago that was good. They won a playoff series. We don’t know how good they could have been. That’s silver lining to look at. They were literally missing Steph Curry. He changes everything. It’s not just about the points, the the assists, the steals. It’s about how he opens up the floor and makes everyone better. Jimmy Butler without Steph Curry on the floor is not the the same type of player. He needs Steph Curry on the floor to truly activate his full game because he’s he’s a distributor. He’s someone that that works well in that role. And when his distributing is kicking it out to pods for a clank and kicking it out to Payton for a clank and finding Santos in the corner for a clank, it’s not as much of a thing of beauty as working the offense and getting Curry open looks and then using Curry’s gravity to get easy looks for himself. I did think it was a little strange late in the playoffs that he was passing up wide open layups to to kick it out and all this stuff. Um, that’s a debate for another day. But uh again, Warriors avoid the King’s Fleece. What will be the next offer? Will there be another one? What is the deal with JK? And how will he return if he does? Kaminga’s agent. Time to go, buddy. Time to go. Anyone disagree? And Mike Dunley, I’ll give I’ll give him an A, B+. If you go lower than a B+, uh you’re not acknowledging the hand he was dealt in my opinion. But again, it’s just my opinion. Opinions are welcome on this show. This is Lockdown Warriors. Peace everyone. Have a great weekend.

The Golden State Warriors were reportedly offered a package by the Sacramento Kings for Jonathan Kuminga. Chuck Walter and Shomari Block explain why the Warriors are smart for turning down low ball offers, why Kuminga should look for a new agent, and they give a grade on Mike Dunleavy Jr’s tenure so far.

  1. Oh man you should hear the Locked on Kings podcaster Matt George whine on and on about how the Warriors need to accept the Dario Saric package from them as if we somehow owe them this Kuminga trade. Geez, talk about cowtown broadcast journalism.

  2. I believe the offer was 120/5 years, which comes down to 24 per year, and they wanted closer to 30, and there goes that 150/5 years which was mentioned thousands of times.
And to be honest, he could still get his 24 per year in a sign n trade

  3. Lmao people salivating over the thought of Devin Carter, a 6'2 shooting guard that has zero shooting ability, a somewhat questionable handle and shoots 59% from the line truly boggles the mind. A lot of Kings fans dont even rate him defensively. To say you would rather have that over JK says volumes about your bball IQ.

  4. kerr ….gone ! so what , dray n curry are reason why players dont want to come here ! curry to shoot over everyone else and a loud mouth that does more damage with his mouth !

  5. Kuminga to Washington for Kispert (good shooter and cutter, good size at 6'7, nice 13m AAV contract) and Champagnie (excellent rebounder and all-around competent 2-way player on a steal of a deal). Both players are young and have no availability problems. Wash can throw in some seconds, they have plenty of those. Money works for Kuminga.
Or Kispert + our 2030 frp they own (which unfreezes our 2nd that year and unfreezes picks around that year) + more seconds. This team needs seconds, we can't make simple but effective trades without those.

  6. Kuminga should simply sit out. The Warriors don't want him. They won't release him. They are making it very hard to trade him. If I'm the JK's agent, I simply tell them I'm sitting out until they trade JK. There is absolutely no way he can return to the Warriors because it will be career suicide.

  7. Four championships and leading 3 – 1 for the 5th but wait, one technical suspension and the 5th was gone.

The Warriors wanting to ride the legacy of Steph Curry is great. The approach though in implementing the Curry factor is interesting in that the player that mainly caused the failure for the 5th title was extended a contract in 2023 (buddy and loyalty system- not to be mistaken to the Bill Walsh theory “Better to part ways with a star player one year early than one year too late”.

Steve Kerr wants his legacy in a positive situation so he felt his best chance to go out is ride the players he thought helped get the four titles. This meant Kuminga and Moody cannot be afforded full time opportunities to develop as next wave of players to give the Warriors continued success.

If the technical suspension prone player was not extended a contract in 2023, at the very least, Thompson probably is still a Warriors player. The Warriors have had better draft position in 2024, 2025 and 2026. With 3 years of good drafts, the Warriors are probably in a better position for a playoff run in 2027 and later years.

All moves the Warriors made from 2023 and onward were cosmetic moves that gave the Warriors a teaser. Adding a 55 million player was good for a playoff spot but not a championship. If they get rid of Kuminga and Moody, they might as well start tanking games and re-start fresh.

  8. Another year of lockeroom distraction? Three guard hobbit ball has expired. Klutch sports is the best!!! Kerr's comfort is Dario😂

  9. I think kuminga will be like butler in Miami when it came to a trade. The league knows we don’t want kuminga anymore so they have the leverage. We need to sign kuminga to a 4 yr 80 million or 3yr 60 million and let him play next year to improve his trade value. We can trade him then and he won’t walk out for nothing. We lost out on expiring contracts of looney and GP2, we could have gotten a good player like monk or derozen. We are letting our feelings get in the way to better the franchise. Curry is done soon or he needs to go on $40 million contract and get rid of dreymond, so we can bring in a young top gun

  10. Steve Kerr went on a propagandathon at the end of the season to make sure the world knew he thinks JK is a BAD basketball player. Never seen anything like it in my 3 plus decades of life. So, how can you expect to get a good deal in return for a player you've vehemently declared is BAD?

As for the Jimmy win streak, we'll see. The Warriors played well with Jimmy when their remaining schedule was ranked as 3rd easiest remaining. Meanwhile, JK was allowed to play more minutes after Steph started stinking up the joint, when they were playing the hardest portion of their schedule. Did we forget Steph's single digit games, or the one where he had no made filed goals and 2 point against the Grizzlies? I suppose that was all just due to JK's low basketball IQ. Maybe his low IQ was rubbing off on Draymond and Steph.

Steph, Draymond, and Steve have shown me there true colors and I'm out. In 2022 Steph finally got a title where he was the undisputed best player on the team. Now it seems he only wants to win if he's the man. So good luck on the illusive 5th, but I can't see it. Can't take all the money and expect everyone to take vet minimums for your sake again. Those days are gone.

  11. Charlie is right about Dunleavy, who was hamstrung from day one by Bob Myers forcing him and Joe Lacob to give the 4 yr/$100M to Draymond Green after the 2023 season. Jonathan Kuminga is not the mess. He's a symptom of an existential crisis the Warriors organization is facing. Ironically, Steve Kerr called it before the 2023 season. Unfortunately, Joe Lacob no longer has Jerry West, who is the real brains behind the dynasty. Bob Myers personal relationship and dedication to Draymond Green, combined with Lacob's complete lack of confidence in himself to make basketball decisions, meant the crisis that Kerr correctly identified was not dealt with. The NBA, under Adam Silver, is already in steep decline. Within the NBA, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr's carrying the baton for Bob Myers is causing more and more fans to reevaluate the value of following the Warriors beyond bandwagoning. That's a huge percentage of Warriors fans. Imagine the infusion of energy and renewed interest Warriors fans would feel if it was suddenly announced that Draymond Green is gone. If that doesn't happen this year, everyone who's livelihoods is directly tied to GS Warriors fan engagement is going to find themselves retiring or looking for supplemental/alternative income. There are too many entertainment alternatives to imagine fans who leave will come back in significant numbers. JK is not the problem. He's a symptom being painted as the problem.

  12. The travesty is that everybody is focusing on Kuminga, when the Warriors have a lot more problems. You have a GM who has done absolutely nothing. All the really good free agents are taken. What has he done signed a desperate Jimmy Butler? He only got that deal done because of his previous relationship with Jimmy Butler, and the fact that no one else was willing to give Jimmy Butler a long-term contract other than that he has missed on every other free agent and trading opportunity.

  13. Acquiring Taran Armstrong will hopefully prove to be a great move! He’s looking good in summer ball along with Will Richard. Those two could be awesome additions to the warriors this coming season! I’m still disappointed that they let Daeqwon Plowden go! He was so exciting to watch last summer!
