Pat Riley & The Miami Heat Pulled Off HIGHWAY ROBBERY With The Norman Powell Trade!

Pat Riley and the Miami Heat pulled off highway robbery when they made the trade earlier this week to acquire Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers. I am Nick Rolloff, host of the Heat Report by Chat Sports. We’re going to dive into any everything on today’s show, but I want to welcome Norman Powell to Miami. Show love to the veteran coming to South Beach. Hit that thumbs up icon. If Norman sees this video somehow, I want him to know he’s loved by the Heat fans and welcomed in the 305. So, hit that like button to welcome Norman Powell to the 305. Let’s revisit the trade here because these are the full trade details that landed Powell in Miami. The Heat gave up Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson to get Powell. The Clippers got John Collins from the Jazz. And then the Clippers also attached a second round pick to Collins or to Paulo I should say which sent that to Utah. And like it’s honestly hard for me to legitimately sit here and come to the realization that the Heat turned Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love into Norman freaking Powell. Like are we serious? How did Pat Riley end up giving doing that? The fact that Miami was able to get off of Kyle Anderson’s contract, off of Kevin Love’s contract, get a allstar level guard on an expiring detract without giving up any picks. Like no seconds, no firsts. If the Heat attached one of their second round picks they could trade because they only have like about three that they could trade to this deal, I would have been fine with it. But they did it without giving up any. I am absolutely stunned by this and it was why I was so excited initially on Monday morning because this is an unbelievable deal. You are adding a player that last season got legit all-star consideration in the Western Conference because of how well he was playing. When Kawhai was out for the first half of the year, Powell was holding it down alongside James Harden. And then Kawhai came back and he still continued the ball out shooting 42% from three on seven attempts a night and averaging damn near 22 points per game. It was a phenomenal season for Paulo for the Clips, but he’s really been doing this almost his entire career. He spent time in Toronto, time in Portland, the last three seasons in LA, and over the last four total years. He has shot no worse than 39.7% from beyond the ark. He’s taken five attempts a night basically and he consistently averages mid tens to high teens points per game. Like it’s unbelievable that you were able to get this type of shooter, this type of scorer, an asset like Powell on an expiring contract for two players that weren’t going to play for you. You were at the max 15 roster spots before making this trade. And I would argue that these were players probably 15 and 12 on your roster. Kevin Love was certainly last. Kyle Anderson was probably 12. The only two I would put in between them was Kashad Johnson and Terry Rosier. That would have been 13 14. You trade your 12th and 15th player on the rosters to get a guy that got all-star consideration last year. This just is a trade that Miami simply rarely makes. And the fact that they were able to get such a good player for basically free. Mindboggling to me. And they didn’t even have to like have any other years to his salary. Like he’s an expiring contract. Unbelievable stuff. I think that he clearly won the trade. But I want to know your thoughts. Do you agree? Did the Heat win this trade where they got Norman Powell and just sent out Kyle Anderson, Kevin Love. It’s the pin comment on today’s show. Type five for yes or type for no. I want to go through some stats now and advanced numbers to just further illustrate how effective Norman Powell is going to be for Miami this upcoming year. How about this number from Synergy Basketball? Powell was the sixth most efficient player last year in the NBA amongst the 68 players who were used over 18 possessions per game. He shot 45% on movement three-point attempts and shot 40% from beyond the ark when spotting up. Those are just ridiculous numbers. And the part that really makes me happy about Norman Powell and what he’s going to be able to bring to the table is that as you see with those numbers, he is not someone who is a stationary three-point shooter. He is very much able to hit shots leaning on the move. He was in the 78th percentile on handoff possessions last season. Like he just was so dang good. And you saw how Duncan Robinson was used over his Miami career, coming off DHO’s, pindowns, coming off curls. Well, they’ll be able to use Norman Powell in that same exact way. But I got even better news for the Heat fans out there. He replaces Duncan Robinson’s production, which needed to be replaced because you had no shooting on this roster. But he gives you infinitely more defensively and way more ability to score and playmake off of the dribble. Like he is so much better than that at dunk than Duncan. And that’s no crime to Duncan because he was able to really improve and become effective off the dribble as an playmaker this past season. Another reason why Noran Pow is going to be awesome in Miami, his length. Yeah, he’s 6’3 without shoes. 6’4 with shoes, but he’s got legit size to him, man. Like, you see these numbers here. At the NBA combine, he came in at 63 without shoes and a 610.75 wingspan. So, he’s got practically a plus 10 wingspan. This guy, man, he’s a sniper. He can defend way better than Duncan. He can put the ball on the deck. This guy’s gonna be a player for Miami, dude. Like, let’s look at some of the ball on the deck numbers. Scored 1.05 points per 3.7 possessions, 19% frequency during the pick and roll. So, he ranked in the 90th percentile in points per possession in the pick and roll. Love that. Duncan, by the way, not to throw shade to D- Rob, but he was a used only 2% less than Powell. So, similar frequency, but only had 087 points per possession, 54th percentile. So, Powell just got so much PT, that’s why he had about the same more frequency on the two more possessions. But the percentile difference between the two, you are just getting an infinitely better player that can run the pick and roll. And I’m excited to see the type of motions they will have for him. I’m starting to get a little foaming at the mouth here. Like I I like I’m just envisioning Spolstra having hero on the right side. Powell whip from the corner, strong side corner to the weak side corner. Come off a pin down. get it off of a curl from hero reversing into a screen and roll with wear or bam to where you then have the option where he’s coming off the curl. He can step right into a shot, reset, come back, get a screen, walk into a three-point shot, run the pick and roll with one of the big men moving to the ground. He can get to the rim, drop it to the big man, or kick to the then strong side corner for another three-point attempt. Like I am just envisioning Norman Powell in so many different ways in this heat half court offense. And for a team that is ranked bottom 10 offensively in the NBA for each of the last five seasons. The only year they weren’t able to be or they weren’t in the bottom 10 was the year they were the one seed Eastern Conference that 2122 season with the first year of Kyle Lowry. Like I think this is going to be the best offensive Heat team since that year. I have no issue making that demand and statement right now with a more bigger role for Yoic. Hopefully more development from Bam with his three-point shot, Powell in the fold and other players hopefully rising to the occasion. Like you’re going to have a much better offense this season. And you can assume that Miami who always has a top half defense will be able to balance it out and be a relatively solid basketball club. We talked about how he is better on the ball than Duncan Robinson running the pick and roll and getting into his shot in the mid-range and he’s got a little bit of a floater game as well which we’ll showcase here in a second. But how about this offball demon numbers Powell had 1.21 points per possession on 4.6 possession per games on spot up opportunities. Just simply put, when he is able to catch and shoot off like open, he’ll make you pay. And then when he catches it, shoots and spot ups, pump fakes, and leverages it into a dribble drive, he is very, very good. And then he also had 1.12 points possession on offscreen. Like this guy is just a ball player, man. He can do it in so many ways. And let’s kick it out to John Jablanca, who I give him credit for a couple tweets he put out. He helps share some of those statistics that we just mentioned on screen as well. John mentioning here small sample size but without either Harden or Kawawaii. Norman Powell averaged 29 points on 75 possessions, 56% of effective field goal percentage, 61% true shooting percentage with a 32% usage. Shot 50% from three, 43% or from three. Um when he was assisted to non-assisted, Clippers were plus three. in those 310 minutes. Point is, the dude is a flat out scorer, dude. With Harden, without Harden, with Kawhai, without Kawhai, dude hooped last year. Bucket getter. And was it the best season of his career? Yes, it was. There’s no debate about it. Will he be able to have that exact type of season a year ago? This year, the law of averages say no. But we also showed his stats over the last four years. He might not give you that same production he did last year. That’s fine. But he might still give you 17 18 points a game on efficient scoring. Well, he’s going to be efficient. He just is because we know it’s in his nature. He is always above 45% from the field and always basically at a 40% three-point mark. So, you can guarantee that to happen. It’s just all about how many other things that he can add to your ball club. And he’s more than just a shooter, folks. He’s an advanced scoreer. Shot 45% on floaters last season. would have liked that to be a little bit higher. We know our guy Hero has that in his bag, but he does get to that in the driving and the leveraging his pump fake into a drive. Shot 60% on layups. Shot overall 54% when he drove to the rim. Was 61 a.5% true shooting percentage, 82nd percentile. But here’s the stat that I really wanted to get to. He gets to the free throw line. He made three and a half free throws per game last season. That ranked in the 91st percentile. Shot 80.4% from the free throw line as a whole, which means he got to the line about just over four times a game. Like he is a scorer. He is not a shooter. He is a scorer, but he’s also a good basketball player. He is not just a shooter. He will get to the free throw line. He’ll draw fouls. He’ll help playm make for others. I think he’ll get that in a more of an expanded role. And to me, I know we have a long way to go in this roster this season, but it’s hard for me not to imagine him being a starter. I like I really I really am having a hard time. He started more than he’s ever started last season for Los Angeles. Previous uh six man of the year voting, top five twice. I just think that he’s going to be starting and that length that he has will provide him with the ability to defend in the back court with Tyler Herro. Is he a elite defender? No. But he’s a better defender than Tyler and he’s a better defender than Duncan Robinson who started at times next to Tyler Hero. And I like keeping DaVon Mitchell in that off thebench high energy type of pest role. That’s where he thrives. So start hero and Powell, bring DaVon off the bench. This Heat trade I think was an absolute awesome one. Let me know your thoughts. Do you have faith in the Heat’s front office again after this move? Type F if you have faith. Type D if you do not. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. I don’t want to overreact and say that I have complete utter faith and respect for this front office because they still have not been that good over the last four years. And I wish this is the move they would have made during the Bam and Jimmy days cuz god forbid they made this buy low move on Norman Powell back then we might have won a championship. But it is the first great move I’ve seen in a while. Like when you look at some of the great moves that Miami has made obviously signing and trading for Jimmy but like I don’t even give front office credit for that. I give Dwayne Wade. They made a great trade at the deadline getting Jay Crowder and Andre Gadala. That was a good one. The signing trade for Lowry was ultimately a good move. You got to two you got to an NBA finals and two conference finals with Lowry as your point guard. That’s never going to disappoint me. But like when you think and you take away the draft, you talk about just signing free agents and making trades. This is as good as a move as we’ve seen over the last four years and I’m fired up about it. And it’s not just because the player you’re adding to. There are three added benefits that I just need to talk about. one, when you made this deal, you freed up a roster spot, which was a massive thing that the Heat need to do. Like, they could not continue to have 15 players on the roster with what the players that were on the roster look like. Like, that couldn’t have happened. So, having an open roster spot gives you a lot of flexibility. Say Norman Powell doesn’t work out. An expiring contract, $20 million coming off the books next season. Kevin Love wasn’t expiring and Kyle Anderson had no money guaranteed next year. So yeah, he would have been an expiring after this season anyway, but that’s also just $13 million in expiring contracts with K Love and Anderson. Now you have 20. So you have seven more million dollar inspirings if you wanted to have that come off your books for the free agency period next year. But here’s the part that really intrigues me. I think the Heat are going to be competitive right now and I don’t want to be drinking the Kool-Aid and I’ll say this in another video that like I am not sold on trading Andrew Wiggins anymore anymore. Like if I get offered a unbelievable pick and a player from the Lakers or someone else for Wiggins, cool. I’ll take it. But I’m not rushing into a trade because a hero Powell Wiggins Bam Wear front five that’s pretty solid with DaVon Mitchell coming off the bench, Yoic coming off the bench, Hakez, Ya Yakonis, Larson Highmith. That’s a solid deep team. But say it doesn’t work out. Say you trade Wiggins. Say Powell doesn’t go well and Miami is still a playin team. They’re under 500 at the trade deadline. You could flip Norman Paulo for a first round pick potentially because he is a player that can absolutely help a contending team get over the top. So, not only could you get better yourself and compete in a weaker Eastern Conference, but if it goes south, you could then flip him for a first round pick, which would then inevitably turn Kyle Anderson, Kevin Love to a first. like you were able to get this Norman Powell asset as a player a trade piece as an expiring for two players that I wanted off the roster for nothing. I mentioned it earlier in the video. If you ranked my players on the roster one through 15, Kevin Love would have been dead last at 15. Kyle Anderson would have came in at 12. So, two players that wouldn’t have been in a playoff rotation in my book. two players that provide you with depth, sure, but not a lot else for a guy that averaged 20 points a game last season and is a top 10 shooter in the NBA. And that, my folks, is why I put genius on the thumbnail and highway robbery in the title because that’s what Pat Riley did with this book. That’ll do it for this episode of the Heat Report. 1. I agree Nic. Starting lineup should be Powell, Herro, Wiggins, Bam and Ware with Mitchell, Jovic, Jaime, Highsmith are your top 8. Bring in a capable Back up center and let's go get it

  2. Powell is awesome. Might be the best player we’ve had since ‘23 Jimmy.

I would still prioritize getting off Wiggins.

I wouldn’t worry about Rozier until the deadline, and even then it could be best to just let him score on our books. We’ll need the space for Bam’s extension and probably Powell and Niko’s too. Also why I think it’s important to get off Wiggins.

I would absolutely move Tyler now, and Powell can affords that for us. We all know we can’t give him the extension. Let’s learn from the Jimmy drama that you gotta trade the man before it gets ugly.

I would also like to see 1 acquisition that supports Ware/Jovic/Pelle’s timeline. Could do it through trading Tyler.

Also get out of the repeater tax this year, as opposed to down the road when we’re further along the path to winning a championships.

This team is not winning a championship this year, even though i think they could have a respectable playoff showing. The problems ahead need to be sorted out now.

I would rather extend Powell than Tyler, and I would rather extend Powell than keep Wiggins.

I would definitely NOT want to keep more than 1 of them.

  3. I’m not sure putting Davion back on the bench after he busted his ass to earn a starter spot is the wisest decision. Are we making Patrick Nun again?Dude was the only one who showed up in the playoffs and now he gets demoted. Powell is used to coming off the bench. Tyler is out of place playing point guard. He’s been best as a spot up shooter throughout his career. Plus, Powell is comfortable coming off the bench. I hope I’m wrong

  4. Pat been doing this to the rest of the league but y’all be crying like the heat haven’t been one of most successful franchise over the past decades

  5. I like how all the Riley haters who came out of the woodwork went slinking back into their holes again after he basically made them all look like idiots.

Thing is, I have seen this movie several times before, and it's the only movie series that gets more hilarious with every new entry.

I'm still laughing at you all and I have been trying to stop for days now….

  6. Powell started as a defensive stopper….if can have that kind of energy as well as keep his averages and efficency they could actually be watchable offensively.
