Top 3 Stories of the Day: Utah Jazz begin Las Vegas Summer League tonight | NIL Go already creati…

It’s time to break down the biggest stories of the day. This is the top three stories of the day on kslsports.com. 975 the KSL sports zone. Jacob Ben 975 the KSL sports zone. Jake Scott Ben Anderson. Uh yeah. So maybe we should think twice about the the bozo of the week segment. We don’t want to offend anybody. No, that might be we don’t we don’t want we don’t we get enough angry Yeah. stuff. We actually got some good uh feedback on that yesterday. Oh, yeah. Yeah. We had somebody send an email in and say they really enjoyed the segment. Oh, good. Their only issue was that we didn’t provide uh an easier way to find the video. Oh, okay. But that’s not something I want to be. If you look If you Google golf fight or Twitter search golf fight, no, but we can tweet out the bozo candidates. That’s fine. We can snap out the candidates. Yeah, it’s not a big deal. The actually uh the actual video though probably I probably shouldn’t be tweeting out from the Jake and Ben zone. You could throw out a link to the story like the story with the edited video that you found. We could find ways Christian get creative learning for crying out loud. All right, now you’re yelling at Christian. I know it’s it’s unfortunate. By the way, the last time did you do you did traffic, did you do your nickname? Did you do car crash Christian? No. Why? I forgot Ben and I gave a lot of unsolicited career advice to Christian during the break. Yeah. All of it bad. I mean, just terribly. He should he should do the opposite. Um, but this one, he refuses to listen. He just he won’t he won’t jump on board with the catchy traffic guy nickname. He ignores our best stuff. It’s that I mean, that’s been a home run since the beginning of radio. Yeah. Find a creative traffic persona and really make it your own. Hold on to it. You’ll never have to work another day in your life. I used this example before. I You say the name General Gridlock and the entire town knows exactly what we’re talking about. Got to have a thing. There’s even a Simpsons character as you once pointed out. Yeah. Car Crash Christian is is just brilliant. He should alter his voice, too, but I think that might be that might be a bridge too far. Yeah, the screaming was the idea. All right, top three stories of the day at kslports.com. Brought to you by Jbrooks Jewelers. Cherish your love with Jbrooks Jewelers. Explore their expertly crafted engagement rings made from the finest materials. Jbrooks Jewelers. All right, Christian, where do you want to start? Number one 2K summer league in Vegas is underway. The Jazz and Ace Bailey play their first game tonight. Uh taking on Con Canipple. So, it’s the number five pick going up against the number four pick. two players who play the same position and play it about as differently as you possibly could. Uh, Ace Bailey is just the some of the best combination of physical tools you’re going to see in a basketball player. 68, great vertical, great length. Uh, really highly skilled, but maybe not a specialist in any one area other than taking really difficult shots. Coniple 65, 6’5 wingspan, doesn’t really jump over a phone book. I think he had two total dunks last year, but skill level through the roof. makes the right play over and over and over. Great motor, which I was very impressed with. Ace Bailey’s motor actually, but his first taste of uh of NBA summer league, which I do think is an advantage. We’ll talk about it coming up a little bit later, but I think having played a couple of games, you kind of get that that fear out of your belly. So, Ace will go into this being his third game tonight against Charlotte with a little bit of an understanding of what what to expect. Yeah, it should give him an advantage, but who knows what the Jazz have him working on. So that’s why summer league is so difficult and you can’t judge just by shooting percentages and stuff like that. You you really don’t know if you I I’m sure I know you have been, but if you talk to people who’ve coached summer league, you talk about there’s a there’s a lot of nuance there. Coaches get nervous. And especially by the end of uh the Vegas run, they don’t even really want to win. Yeah. And everybody wants out of Vegas at that point. So it’s kind of a it’s kind of a funny thing. I’d like I’d like to see maybe if he improves his shot selection, but I have no idea if that’s what the Jazz want him to work on. You know what I mean? Maybe maybe the instructions were go cut it loose. Yeah, take shots. Take shots. Whatever. Go get him. U no Bryce Sensibah. He’s not on the roster. I think for a couple of reasons. One, he performed well. Two, I do think there’s a a sense because people do this. You kind of default to the guy who knows how to do it. you just kind of say, “Well, Bryce is the ultimate safety net on this basketball team.” Which you run your stuff. The first action’s not there. It’s just kind of like, “Well, I’m gonna look for I’m gonna look for Bryce. Where’s Bryce? He’s in the corner or whatever he’s doing, but he will get a shot up.” And, you know, he scored 56 points in 54 total minutes that he played. He was a bucket uh in Salt Lake City. No, I I want to figure out if Isaac Collier, Isaiah Collier, excuse me, can solve an issue of the defense is creating a problem for you. What What are you going to do? Don’t just pass it to Bryce. That’s not an answer. What What are you gonna do? How are you going to do it on your own? Same with Ace Bailey. Same with Kyle Filipowski, etc. And I think Bryce, you know, being on the floor made it maybe a little bit too easy for some of those guys. I think there there’s something to what you’re talking about. I I think it’s really politically motivated probably more than basketball motivated basketball motivated honestly because Bryce is probably boohooing about playing at all and his performance in Utah was kind of a protest good performance. Does that make any sense? Like yes. So, I’m gonna I’m gonna be here and I’m gonna ball out and I’m probably going to eclipse the rest of the team, but I’m going to prove the point to you that I should be not doing this. I I don’t know if I told you this, but a a reporter from one of the other teams was in the hallway. We weren’t in the hallway yet after the game at the Huntsman Center, and apparently Bryce walked into the hallway and yelled, “I’m never playing basketball before October again.” To your point, right? it. He made a true declaration that I’m never playing summer league again because there is a stigma to summer league and it it is a thing and they probably don’t want to be playing basketball in the middle of the summer in Salt Lake or Vegas for that matter. Uh so I I think there is something to that and it is a bit of a reward for the Jazz. They’re saying, “Okay, good job. Thanks for going back to summer league. Good work. We’ll, you know, go do what you’re going to do. We’ll see you in camp.” Uh, but it also sends a message to the young players that, okay, he’s a lot better than me. They’re letting him off. They’re setting the hierarchy in the locker room, which I do think is really important because they don’t have veterans anymore really to lean on to be like, this is the person that you follow. And I I thought Loach made an interesting point about Charlotte’s locker room this morning when he was on DJ and PK. And what you really don’t want, and I don’t even know if this is Ace’s personality, but you don’t want him rolling up day one in the Ferrari and being the okay, there’s a new sheriff in town kind of attitude, like I’m going to set things around here because I’m the great Ace Bailey. And I’m not even saying that he would do that per se. But I would guess the Jazz really want to set a hierarchy so that the young players truly can learn and figure out what it takes to be an NBA player because they really don’t know. I’ve seen so many rookies come into this league and they have no clue, right? Until I would say, golly, a year and a half in. The the only minor exception might be Donovan Mitchell and that’s like it. Yeah. So, it’s you want to make sure that the hierarchy is set and they they are telling the young players, Bryce is really good. He’s he’s been with us. He’s done what we wanted to including play summer league and now he’s going to do his thing. And when you guys make it to camp, he’s better than you. Mhm. He’s got a place on this team. You do not yet. But even last year, Walker Kesler played in summer league in Salt Lake City. Was a thirdyear guy who had been an all rookie first team member. And yeah, he had a bad sophomore year, but you know, it makes it easier for next year you to say, “Hey, Cody, we need you to play in Salt Lake. Got got to have or flip got to play next year.” Or Isaiah, got to have you play next year. We want you to come in, set the tone exactly like you’re saying. Let everyone else kind of get accustomed to what it’s like to be in the NBA and they can watch you. And Ace, you got to play next year. You got to play in summer league. It’s your second season. You’re a hyper draft pick. We get it. But you’re going to be playing. It just it sets the tone of the work ethic you have to have to make it in the NBA. And I think it’s a good sign. Yeah. Nothing wrong with it. I had no idea that LaMelo Bal had a both teal and purple Ferrari or something. Whatever. Quite the collection. That’s pretty outrageous. And he drives absurdly fast, apparently. Well, in that town, he really should not given the history of basketball players driving fast. Oh, is there a bad history? Yeah. Uh, uh, Bobby Phills died. Oh, okay. I didn’t know that. Racing. I could tell you where the road is racing. Uh, David Wesley. Oh, yikes. In the middle of the night. It I think I think it was after a game. I’d have to go back and look at it, but horrible accident. Yeah. Horrendous. So yeah, that that town doesn’t have a good history with that sort of thing. I hope that’s not true. But Jazz play tonight. They play Charlotte, the least important game, I would say, of summer league is Sunday. They play the Warriors, who don’t really have a ton of great players. And then Monday, they’re back out against uh Trey Johnson and the Wizards. And then they get to wrap up against the uh Spurs and Dylan Harper. Maybe Dylan Harper’s actually on Monday. They’re going to be so ready to leave. Yeah, they’re going to be ready to bounce. But so ready to leave. To the point tonight, Jazz 5:00, which is 7 o’clock Eastern on ESPN. Ace Bailey is that type of draw. People want to see him, so they’re putting them in prime time. All right, number two article from kslports.com. NILG go system creates problems for Utah State as well as other schools. It just seems like they set up Yeah. a website where you go in and you put in your NIL and it goes to the clearing house, right? I believe these are clearing house issues and they’re supposed to say like, “Yes, this is approved. This can be dispersed to your players or not.” And every single one of them is getting turned away. Nothing’s being approved right now because it sounds like one of the issues is that these collectives are not a legitimate business. So if I own a car wash and I want Devon Dampier, as you like to call him, to come advertise for my car wash, I can say no, not or or whatever. But no, if I want to say, “Yeah, he makes me money because people like him and he’s going to be at the car wash on Saturday for two hours and I’m going to make a lot of money by having people come see him and get their cars washed.” That’s legitimate. And it sounds like what they’re saying essentially is that a collective is not a business. So what do you mean? You’re paying these players for what? To do what exactly? I’m glad you clarified a little bit because I I was, you know, it it seemed like a bureaucratic issue to me and maybe it is, but what you’re saying is they’re actually enforcing the rules. Yes. The rules originally were supposed to be the university has nothing to do with it. It’s just car dealerships like you’re talking about. It’s just that kind of, you know, public appearances, online stuff. That’s what it was supposed to be. And then the collectives formed, which aren’t a business. You’re right. I don’t even know what they are. They’re not a nonprofit either. Yeah. I don’t know. They’re they’re not monitored by anyone. And then the universities took over the collectives essentially. And so that’s not supposed to be none of that is supposed to be it’s not supposed to be legal. I had no idea how it was going on in the first place and it’s like that that is not supposed how it’s supposed to happen. So are you telling me maybe that they’re actually enforcing the rules? Uh it sounds or is this a bureaucratic problem? No there what if it’s just a web issue because one of the things that foresight says here and he works for a Utah state collective or their NIL stuff says some of the deals have timed out multip you know you go and you put it in the system. He says some of the deals have timed out multiple times, not because of any compliance issue, but because the system simply does is not being managed at the pace NIL requires. So, they’re just getting overwhelmed. But it’s like, yeah, of course, you’ve got 105 students on 130 teams. That’s an issue. But he also goes on to say the collective sports commission has taken a position that collectives cannot serve a quote valid purpose, a standard that was never clearly communicated before the implementation. But that’s my point of they’re saying, what is your collective benefiting? How are you benefiting from paying these players? How is this not pay for play? How is this NIL? Yeah, it’s not. It’s not. And I actually kind of agree with Yeah, it’s they’re enforcing the rules. That’s what’s that’s what it was supposed to be. It wasn’t supposed to be collectives. That’s just the the monster that formed because there was no sheriff in town. Yesterday, the College Sports Commission issued a memo that read, “An entity with a business purpose of providing payments or benefits to student athletes or institutions rather than providing goods or services to the general public for profit does not satisfy the valid business.” Wow. Crazy. So, they’re enforcing the rules at least for now. That’s the thing. Does that change? Yeah, it will change. They will buckle. I would guess the online thing and and this goes for many online promotions or this isn’t a promotion but in the case of this station in the past it’s been a promotion but you could go right down to like um uh not to get political but remember at the beginning of Obamacare the the website was not even close to prepared to like it’s like that’s what that’s been one of the most publicized things slash issues in years and you don’t think the traffic was going to be high on on day number one. You didn’t see that coming where we had what promotion were we were doing? We were using an outside web person to run I think it was our final four or it was NCAA tournament bracket or whatever and it crashed like immediately. We called the company. We’re like, “Hey, what’s going on?” Like, “Oh, well, there was overwhelming traffic and it’s just it was like, yeah, yeah, it’s the final four or NCAA tournament. We’re doing a radio promotion. What do you mean? That’s supposed to be a good thing and now I look dumb. Yeah. Anyway, I’ll never never understand that. You know, this whole this whole legislation, all this stuff has been coming for a year and a half. Like, wow, we’re having web problems. You are. You are. Okay. All right. What’s next? Number three, Jagor Damon made his summer league debut for the Nets yesterday, and his first bucket was from deep downtown. Domen steps into a three and bangs it. Bang bang. So, just so you know, that is how you’re going to hear his name pronounced in the NBA. Uh because he did clarify it is Jaor Domen, not Jaor Demon or Aigor Demon, which is what everyone called him in incorrectly. His name will be in the NBA Jaor Domen. Uh he clarified it. He said, “I was worried when I got here that Americans wouldn’t be able to say it.” He says, “I realized I’d set a trap for myself.” So, you’re going to hear Dyman a lot. He was fine. He was two of five for eight points. That’s good. Four rebounds, zero assists, which is a little strange. Um, two turnovers, which is actually good. You see how many guys are given five turnovers a game in summer league because it’s just really sloppy basketball. Shooting the three is is great. He needs to figure out how to get into the paint. Again, it’s game one. Nothing to read into. Not a thing. Domen. Jaor Domen. Domen. Yeah. Going to have to get used to that. Yeah, I don’t know how he’s going to be the next level. It’s a good It’s good that he hit a three. I mean, yeah, hit a couple of threes that like Okay. Um, he’s going to have to do that repeatedly. He looked small. He’s very thin. Okay. Got a little bit of the Cody Williams thing going on. He’s a little overwhelmed physically by the guys out there. He’s 19 years old. That happens for some players. And again, what the one thing I didn’t love about it, which, you know, you can make it a positive, you can make it a negative. didn’t love it is that he’s they drafted two other point guards in the same class. Ben Saraf who was also truly awful yesterday. Far worse than uh than Jerore was Jagor just had a bad first quarter or first half. Nolan Trayori the international player also the same age had a much better game. He had 13 points, three assists, uh and three rebounds and shot three of five from the floor. Again, not a lot of not a big sample size. We’ll see how Jagger plays. All right, stay tuned. We’ll get to more Jake and Ben coming up next on a Friday. Steve Bartle uh will join the show at the top of the 11 o’clock hour uh Adam. So stick around for the latest on your youth at the top of the 11 o’clock hour. More next 975 the KSL Sports Zone. This is H Sen and Scotty J. Legendary longtime Utah Jazz assistant Phil Johnson kind enough to join us. Frank Leaden has been so valuable and so important to the scene of the sport world here in the state of Utah, not just to Jazz, but can people really truly appreciate just how important he was in those early years? I learned so much because it was a completely different uh approach to the game and approach to coaching. And what he was is he was very demanding, but he was very honest and he was very straightforward particularly with his staff and also with the player. People just don’t realize how good he was because they saw the personality stuff, but they didn’t see him coaching a basketball team. There has never been a guy like Frank and there never will be. He’s unique. Catch Hansen Scotty weekdays from noon to 3 on 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Dogs up.
