Devin Carter on playing PG for Kings in Summer League, offseason improvements

Uh we’re looking pretty good. This is our uh first practice, so you know, just everybody kind of getting to know each other, figure out everybody’s games. Uh obviously played with a few guys last year. Uh Deb went to Providence, so you know, just good seeing him again. Played against a few of the other guys also. So we’re looking pretty good though. Not having this experience last year, just what kind of what are you looking to hopefully accomplish? Um, honestly just, you know, working on my game against live competition. Um, you know, summertime you really just get in the gym, you don’t really have a lot of opportunity to know get quality like five on five runs too much. So, just looking for the opportunity to play against uh great people. So, how much of an opportunity is this to kind of just showcase like how you’ve grown in the past year given kind of the way things went last season? Um, it’s a big opportunity. No, I mean, uh, like you said, I missed some of these last year, missed the first 30 games, missed a lot of practices. So, um, you know, it was just a rough first year, I guess you could say, uh, injury standpoint and just, uh, availability standpoint, but, uh, no, definitely looking forward to it. It can be tough to like as a young guy to hear your name in like trade talks and stuff. How are, you know, your name’s been out there. How are you processing like all of that? Um, I mean, like I said, my I’ve told you guys this before. My pops played for 13 years. He’s been traded a lot. Um, I just talk to him. Uh, it’s how he handles it and that’s kind of going to stay between us. Just what me and my pops be talking about. But, um, no, I mean, I just come in to work every day. Uh, obviously thankful for the opportunity to be here. You know, show up with the, uh, ready to work mentality all the time. And, uh, you know, it is what it is. I mean, it’s a business. You talked about missing a significant amount of time last year, obviously with the injury, recovering from surgery. Um, how much do you would you say that you feel you have something to prove or chip on your shoulder as you get this opportunity here at? Yeah. Um, obviously being uh the main draft, first round draft pick last year, just having this opportunity to go out here this season. I mean, just some of these and uh, you know, the GB came off of Stockton Champs. So, you know, we have a lot of confidence. they tell you playing a point guard, shooting guard or whatever. Um, whatever they need to do. When you hear people talk about even them themselves and the public, they say now the need for for a point guard, how’s that kind of sit with you as someone who’s on this roster? Um, one more time. What was the last part? I heard the first part. Yeah. Yeah. Just how does that kind of resonate with you as somebody who’s on this roster? Um, I mean, at the end of the day, everybody has an opinion. Uh, I really, uh, just focus on myself and what I do, my strengths, my weaknesses, try to pick my weaknesses. But, um, no, I mean, like I said, just learning, watching film, uh, I’ve never played point guard in my life, so uh, just coming into NBA trying to learn how to play point guard, but like I said, dealing with injuries, missing significant time. Uh, I think this is a good opportunity for me summer league to work on playing point guard. And obviously this summer, I’ve been working on like, you know, point guard reps, point guard reads. uh just getting the team under control and stuff like that. So, I feel like I’ve progressed a lot and hopefully I can showcase that uh next weekend. Is it drastically different from from what you feel you bring to the table? No, I mean I could handle the ball. It’s just I’ve never been put in position in college or high school to be the designated point guard. You know, I’ve always been a combo guard. Uh I could play off ball, but I can play on ball, too. It was really more so just reads with me uh you know constructing the team getting us into what we need to do. I think that was more like the biggest what I need to work on. Kind of the primary point guard right now. How do you feel physical? Uh you know coming into camp I feel great about Are you are you kind of the primary ball handler right now in practice? And I guess if that’s the last question, um, in terms of your game and and your growth in the last year, like what do you feel like you’ve demonstrated already and where do you feel like you’ve made strides and maybe haven’t had a chance to show yet? Um, yeah, I feel like during practice right now, I’m the designated ball handler. Um, just get, like I said, getting the team into where we want to run. I mean, today we didn’t really have plays yet because it was the first day, so we really just want to get up and down, you know, get the first day out and stuff. But um yeah, I feel like I’ve worked on a lot of stuff this summer. I’ll just try to showcase it next week. Cool.

  1. Just listened to Coach Dipesh’s interview and he spoke on Devon’s leadership as a highlight so far this camp. Rooting for him to have successful run

  2. I can't wait for this dude to shut everyone up… I think he's already an excellent NBA level defender(1, 2 and 3) and the sky is the limit on his offense. I hope the kings realize they have a modern position less 2-way player and don't trade or hinder his development with signing just point guards. Do they even watch the modern NBA successful teams?? He can handle the rock… you don't need a traditional PG in today's game.
