Yang Hansen Summer League Debut Was INSANE!
The whole basketball world was waiting for this debut. And right away, you could see the Blazers are fully invested into him, using him the right way as a passing hub at the top of the key. The beautiful thing about having him there is he has the rim protector out of the paint. So now when he connects on the back door, who’s protecting the rim? Nobody. His teammate’s way too athletic and he finishes with ease. Look at how physical he is on this play. Really sets up his teammate well. Before the handoff, he gets all up into his defender. Then he low-key backs into the defender trying to cut off his teammate. Now he’s trailing the play out of position and it leads to a foul call. Two at the line for the Blazers. Oh no, the Warriors are trying him in transition. Nice little Euro step. Great contest and he forces a miss. This is the annoying thing about guarding him. Great initial defense, taking away the actions, the cutting lanes on the left side, but he stays calm, cool, and collected. At this point, you’re like, “Oh, everything’s guarded.” Immediately, he makes them pay for this little mistake. Do you see how little that mistake is? Oh, by the way, we got to appreciate the accuracy on that pass as well. Because of the quickness and precision of that pass, the defense has no time to recover. Look at this. This dude grabs an offensive rebound. He’s probably hyping his head. He’s thinking, “Oh, my mom saw that. My girlfriend saw that. Free layup. Let’s go. Psych. Get that out of here.” And then offensively, he’s getting frisky. One dribble into the spin move. One more dribble. Another spin move. I’ve noticed when he’s driving and handling the basketball, he can absorb contact and go through it. And that gets him to his spot and gets him closer to the rim. Unfortunately, he’s going to have to adjust to the quick hands of NBA players. It got him on that one. But I loved his physicality offensively tonight. Looking to screen everybody. He executes the offball screen to perfection. That defender now has to go all the way around him, creating enough time for his teammate to get that shot off. Also, you got to appreciate the distance. That’s four-point range right there. Another victim. Thinks he has an easy put back layup. Absolutely not. And notice here off the ball, his defender is not glued on to him. The Blazers decide to use that to their advantage and set a screen for him. So now he has a free driving lane. And although he’s not the quickest, this is what he’s so good at. He goes right into the defender. seals him off, stays in control, and scoops it in. We get our first post up of the game. Defenders getting really physical with him, probably expecting at least a dribble. Instead of that, he spins the other way first. And look at the effect. The strength of this man is real. He’s got grown man strength and he’s only 20 years old. He got fouled, by the way. And defensively, we know there’s question marks. for a modern-day NBA 5. He’s not the quickest, but you can tell he has the smarts and he knows where to be. Guards the pick and roll and drop coverage to perfection on this play. And then again, let’s appreciate that he does the fundamentals so well in earthshattering screen to set up his teammate for a wideopen three. His teammate does a great job running the shooter off the line. And now he guards two people at once. So large he’s able to occupy so much space. Forces a miss. And tonight he showed that he’s not afraid to shoot the three ball. The results weren’t great at times, but you got to appreciate his willingness to shoot already. And as a basketball fan, I just love these types of plays. They don’t get mentioned in the box score. But him grabbing this loose ball and swinging it in.5 seconds keeps the offensive flow and doesn’t allow the defense to recover in time. Quick decisions like that lead to wideopen shots. Another three-pointer, unfortunate miss. After that, they try to throw it up the court. He says, “Absolutely not.” And he turns into Magic freaking Johnson. No look passeroon. And now this right here is the play of the night so far. Catches. He’s getting pressured. Talk about versatility. Now he’s receiving a screen. Great screen. By the way, at this point I was thinking, “Oh, he’s going to lose the ball.” No problem. Spin move. And look at where he picks it up from. He’s way far from the basket. It doesn’t matter because of his size and length. and also just the fluidity. No wasted movements, no wasted dribbles, and that’s how you’re able to navigate in tight spaces. Next possession, the offball defender is like, I’m not letting him drive again. And immediately, he makes the defender pay for reaching another dime. Overall, I was really impressed. I I mean, you can see the vision. He has serious potential as a hub offensively. He was making so many quick decisive passing decisions leading to easy opportunities for his teammates and easy points. Obviously, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Struggled from the three-point line and some of his misses were pretty bad. Had some miss bunnies around the rim because he was a bit out of control and also six personal fouls. But still, overall, if you watch him tonight, the main takeaway is, yeah, this kid has potential to be an NBA player. And not just an NBA player, but a great NBA player. That’s all I got, though. Blazers are selling jerseys in China and now our overall value is going up despite smaller market. Jeremy Lin sold worldwide. Oregon is on the map besides green 🌲🌲, river rafting, 🌊 ocean and hunting.
Yang will block others to make his teammates get a better shots
The most impressive part with his performance was his intangibles and his decisiveness. He seems highly coachable because he already has the fundamentals down. There was little to no 2nd guessing in his actions. I like how he was clearly playing the mental game, everything his does is something to be built upon. PnR and rolls to the basket, next PnR he pops to the top of the key to make find an open cutter, next action he shoots it, Defense doesn't know what he's gonna do. Posts up, passes to the cutter, next post up spins baseline for the drive, the Defense is constantly guessing that's what real basketball feels like.
